Drew: Teague a ‘day-to-day decision’

NEW ORLEANS – C-Viv in the Big Easy filling in for MC.

Here are a couple of notes from today’s practice in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Hornets:

* Coach Larry Drew said starting point guard Jeff Teague is day-to-day with an ankle sprain suffered in Friday’s OT win in Detroit. Teague participated in practice Saturday. “He was out here getting some shots up,” Drew said. “He’s moving around on it pretty good. They are still treating it. It will be a day-to-day decision.”

*Drew played Kirk Hinrich, in his second game since returning from shoulder surgery, with 3:48 left in the third until the end of the game. Hinrich told MC that he was “gassed” following the effort. Drew said he was ready to play Jannero Pargo but that he decided to utilize his timeouts to rest Hinrich.  “I was prepared to play Pargo after Jeff gave me the nod that he couldn’t go again,” Drew said. “He came back after they taped him and said that it started to stiffen up a little bit. I threw Kirk in there. I saw he was getting a little winded so I was prepared to throw Pargo in there but I made the decision to use my timeouts where [Hinrich] could get some rest. I kept asking him every timeout, ‘How you feeling, how you feeling?’ He said ‘I’m OK.’”

*The Hawks have gotten off to slow starts the last several games. The travel could be an issue. The Hawks didn’t arrive in New Orleans until 4 a.m. Saturday. They had early-morning arrivals in San Antonio and Detroit. Drew is also concerned that his team doesn’t take an opponent lightly, as they may have in Detroit and can’t afford to do against New Orleans. “When we go back and look at game tape, we see obviously when you are not making shots that gets you off to a little bit of a slow start,” Drew said. “Sometimes you don’t look at an opponent how we would like at a Chicago versus how we look at a team like Detroit that has obviously struggled. Sometimes that factors into it. As a team we are going to have to figure it out, particularly our starters, when we get off to slow starts it takes a little bit of a wake-up call to get us going. Sometimes it’s going to be a situation where it’s going to be too late. We want to be a team that comes out and plays hard start to finish, whether it’s the first quarter or the third quarter. We’ve done that, but we haven’t done it on a consistent basis.”

* Drew rested Joe Johnson and Josh Smith from practice Saturday, calling each “a little tired and a little banged up.”

* Expect the same starting lineup (not including the question about Teague) Sunday against the Hornets with Zaza Pachulia starting at center. Drew said he expected to make in-game adjustments but that the starters would remain the same.

* Drew said he expects a hard-fought game from New Orleans, coming off Friday’s win over Orlando. “To me, it’s going to be a very similar game to the one we just played in Detroit,” Drew said. “It’s going to be a very hard-fought game. It’s a team playing with a sense of desperation. They had lost nine in a row prior to winning [Friday] night against Orlando, which they did very convincingly. It’s another team where we absolutely, positively can’t look at their record and say this is going to be a wash. That team, going back and looking at their last seven or eight ball games, they have been in every ball game to the end. They lost games at the end. It’s going to be a dogfight and we have to be prepared for that.”

* The Hawks will not hold a morning shoot-around Sunday prior to the Hornets game. Instead they will do a walk-through at the team hotel.

* There you go folks. I’m going to write a story for the Sunday paper before I make my first venture into New Orleans. If you’ve got suggestions please feel free to share.

Josh does not move in the motion offense;
unless LD runs a play after a TO.
Usually a back-pick followed by a basket cut leading to a lob
resulting in a dunk !

These guys move w/o the ball:
*T-Mac – very good
*V-Rad – although he should be the one spotting up
[back when he got to play before moving into LD's doghouse]
*Zaza – maybe the best on team
*Joe – getting better & better
*Teaguer – after the entry pass + becoming a good screener
*Willie Green – ; comes off screens for catch & shoot = best on team
*Kirk – watch him, especially if he’s playing the [2]

The team is running LD’s offense remarkably better this yr.

Joe is the key;
when Joe does not stop the ball, the offense flows.
_____________________________________________

Once again:
Why does Josh ‘`not`’ run the pick & roll ?

My guess is / he does not know how or cannot screen effeciently.
_____________________________________________

Motion offense entails more than -just- moving w/o the ball.
1. screening
2. cutting, flashing, etc.
3. setting one’s man up -for- a screen
4. rolling, popping, slipping, second cut, etc.
5. finding gaps in zones
6. walking man away from the play
7. spacing
8. understanding leverage
____________________________________________

These are just a few.

I do not believe LD when he says Josh understands the offense
better than anyone on the team, or that he picked it up quicker.
I just don’t.

How about a look at our options and potential for getting some front court help, and sprinkle in an update on Al’s progress since the surgery?

That might pick the base up a little.

Greener Pastures!

Al does not make up back up money and, is a bona fide starter in this league.
No GM is going to pay Al an AS salary to back up a scrub. That’s perposterous.

Besides a great coach would run more plays to feed Al on the post consistently, where he can be successful and not ask him to do things he is not capable of. Be careful with all that greener grass on the other side of the fence.

Unless you’re getting back D12 or Bynum, you dont trade Horford. Next?

For once he said something correct. Josh is playing just fine. Doing Great. Other than Josh, Maybe JJ nobody else is a triple double threat night in night out. The man is playing at all star levels and more than JJ makes the team tick. Nothing wrong with Josh’s shooting or shot selection. The man is shooting 47 percent, hitting big shots and dishing the ball. We are winning. Im happy.

I would nt either, hed have to take a pay cut. Mike Woodson tried that thingy about feeding Al to help Al develop a low post game and It did nothing for the hawks. If Al was serious about getting better he would have spent his off season working on a low post game and strength and conditioning. Al doesnt want the position and doesnt like defense. Al is not as good as Josh and if we are going to upgrade Al’s position on this team (center) then he wont be better than the center we get.

Bottom line if Al dont want to man up to the task of taking charge of the center position, then in order for the hawks to get better Al has to yield the position to some one who wants it. Al by the numbers is not that good offensively and worse defensively.

So We then do agree, Al has to go were he can show his “game” LOL.

One of the reasons JJ is able to play so much better is the presence of JTeague. He has made it very difficult for teams to run a hard double team on him, and they definitely won’t triple team him. With Bibby, teams routinely ran hard double teams, and sometimes triple teams at him, as well as box and ones. Teague’s ability to effectively hit 3s and take it to the rim has reduced their committment to running hard double teams at JJ.

Josh’s stats last evening were misleading:

Minimum 6 times he rebounded the ball = good;
then proceded to look away from Teague as
he [Josh] dribbled / loped downcourt with the ball
and attempted to initiate the offense.
On at least two occasions – Josh threw the ball away.

Is Josh the point guard ?
Was he attempting a triple double ?
MC – Teague was off his game.
Was Teague off his game – or;
did Josh effectively take Jeff out of his game ?
Really, seriously, people … watch Josh play the whole game.
Watch how he is slow to get back on def while he jaws with officials.
Watch him as he does not recognize the ball coming to the basket …
on a back cut or off a set play;
as he does not keep his eyes on the ball and is constantly
out of position.
Yes then he will make the spectacular play and you want to forget the
four previous times when he was out of position.

Frustrating isn’t he ?

More to come ?

The thing is he is a likeable kid ?

He just don’t get it.

I think we were told if we need to go over the cap we would……well, is the ASG now telling us we think we have enough? Do you really trust Marvin and Zaza to show up against better opponents?

OB, I thought we would be past Teague losing his spot…..I gotta feeling you’re right though. Kirk may get whatever minutes he wants when he gets in shape. Not good IMO. Keep his minutes down and let Teague handle the team like he has so far this season.

“One of the reasons JJ is able to play so much better is the presence of JTeague.”

JJ yesterday, 30 points, Teague 2 pts 3 assist.

fire that chit on up ken

JJ is more productive because of the rise of Josh which creates a legitimate 2nd option and breaks down the double triple teams on JJ . Its hard of any body to hold JJ 1on 1 so they double and triple, now that josh has elevated his play they have to respect Josh, which frees JJ.

PS… in answer to my own question from the previous…

Not no but HELL NO I would not trade Josh straight up for Melo. That trade would instantly make the Hawks a .500 ballclub because of the loss of Josh’s defensive impact. It’s nice to speculate about the Hawks somehow landing a defensive center but let’s be realistic. Beidrins is about the best we could hope to attain.

The trade would certainly solve the redundancy of Josh & Al (and I think that redundancy shows in the way the Hawks have remained in the top half of the conference despite Al’s absence). But you trade our starting power forward for a wing and a healthy Al can not replace Josh’s defensive impact. If Josh would just take two more shots at the rim per game, he would up his scoring average and the contrast between his game and Melo’s would be even more dramatic. Melo is not a team player. Josh, for all his flaws. is.

LOL @ Joe Mama. Horford hasn’t played in two weeks but Joe Mama just can’t let go. Al this, Al that, every other post.

Anybody else see a serious fixation thing goin’ on?

I mean, two weeks and he still can’t let it go? Sounds to me like he’s trying his best to get a rise from Horford and Teague fans, but otherwise has little to offer. Wake me up when he says something different.

So if he got what he says is his fondest wish, and Horford were traded for Howard, wtf would he blog about? I guess he’d have to move to the Magic blog, lol.

Where are all the media fools for predicting the Knicks were upper-tier in the East? Totally laughable after the way they moved Chauncey out of there. These same fools ranked the Hawks no higher than 5th.

So many experts, so much mud to throw….not enough time in the day.

Watching the Jazz and Kings, and these guys can’t wait to stick a dig in on Cousins….doesnt like to pass….one of my favorite bigs in the league. He would look great on this Hawks roster IMO.

I think Derrick is going to be a nice player but he’s playing in a crowded front court (they need to dump Beasley). He might look as good as Irving if he was getting starter’s minutes. His time will come.

“Was Teague off his game – or;

This is, with all due respect, nonsense. Teague was taken out of the game by LD who forced him to give the ball up to Joe after coming over the half court line. Not much he can do in the stat sheet if he doesn’t have the ball in his hands. Of course, the few times that he did have the ball in his hands in the first half, he didn’t do much with it.

In either case, it is a Rosa Acosta-caliber stretch to attribute Teague’s bad game to Josh.
