Atlanta Hawks at Pistons: Game thread

Auburn Hills, Mich.–Hawks will use same lineup as last game with Zaza Pachulia at center. “It’s not set in stone,” Larry Drew said. “We will stay with it for right now.”

  • Drew said Kirk Hinrich had no issues after his first game back from shoulder surgery. “We are going to ease him back into it,” Drew said. “He still has to get into that playing shape where he can play on a nightly basis. I don’t want to pile too many minutes on him.”
  • Drew said “for right now we will keep [Hinrich] at the one. He could play off the ball some. There are a couple of things I possibly want to experiment with as we move forward: him at some two, Joe [Johnson] at some three, that type of thing.”
  • ESPN.com’s Marc Stein runs down a list of teams who will compete with the Hawks for Kenyon Martin’s services and says K-Mart is looking for a major role on a contender.
  • Drew on the Pistons: “They play a very physical style. That has always been a problem or us in the past. They really bang the boards. I told the guys by no means can we come in here and think these guys are going to lay down. They’ve had some close ballgames that they could have won. Looking back at their last game against Miami they were in perfect position to win.”
  • Damien Wilkins is starting for the Pistons tonight. “Our effort has been a lot better, our fight has been a lot better,” he said. “To me, that’s what we had been lacking the most. We had kind of a glass jaw. Now we have a lot more effort, a lot more fight.”
  • Wilkins on not getting an offer from the Hawks: “It was disappointing. They basically told me they weren’t bringing in anymore perimeter guy and I’d have to fight [for a spot] with Pape Sy and [Jerry] Stackhouse. And then I look up and here they are with Willie Green and two other wings, and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It was fun. I appreciate the opportunity they gave me initially. But I miss the guys.”
  • The rec center in northwest Detroit Willie Green came up is now called the Willie Green Center for Physical Fitness. Green attended a ceremony yesterday. “My uncle [Gary Green] was coaching a team up there,” Green said. “He used to open up the gym for us, so we were going up there every day. That’s where I first started playing basketball. It was awesome when I walked in the place. I couldn’t believe the gym was so little. I came from humble beginnings like a lot of us.”

FTPB’

AJ,

between the Bulls, Heat, Celtics, Hawks and even Magic (all teams with 2nd round aspirations) which ones are missing a starting big and which teams could offer a quality big an “easy” 20+ minutes each and every game?.

If Kmart is good enough, he can cut into somebody else’s PT from another team. Also, how much will his decision be motivated by his ability to win a ring?

But also, has K-Mart been playing? Didn’t he get a buyout? So how do we know what kind of shape he is in?

And Does Collins think the Hawks will play KMart at Center? because wouldnt that cut into what limited minutes Collins is already getting?

I agree its all speculation, but I just hope Sund isn’t planning on hitching his wagon to “K-Mart will sign with the Hawks”.

OB, my guess is that the Stanford educated Collins has already figured out his role and knows that he and K-Mart would NOT be competing to defend the same type of player. Funny how there haven’t been articles about all of those teams being interested in Pryzbilla, Dampier, Rasheed, Fesenko, Gadzuric, etc. Hmmm.

AJ,

From Marc Stein;

Martin’s priority is to join a contender on which he’ll have a sizeable role, according to a person close to Martin.

The Clippers and the Knicks can offer the $2.5 million mini-midlevel exception. San Antonio can as well, but it is unlikely to do so because of the luxury tax, sources said.

Atlanta is also limited by luxury tax concerns. Miami can only offer the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million..

So…take the same money from Miami that the Hawks can offer, or take more money from the Clipps to play with Chris Paul, Chauncey, Blake Griffin?

I do not watch a lot of other games because I don’t care for those teams, they are boring, I only care about who won, not gonna spend 3 hrs watching teams I don’t care about.

The game was 33-31 Detroit. The Pistons were struggling to score and the Hawks had a golden opportunity to execute the offense, get good shots, and take the lead.

Instead, what do they do? They run 4 straight plays for Joe. Joe predictably throws up bricks on every single one of those plays. Teague spends those plays standing at the 3 point line watching Joe futilely trying to go 1 on 5. The Pistons push the ball after every rebound, get layups and trips to the foul line, and extend the lead to 10. Next thing you know, it is 43-33 Detroit.

This team already should have figured this out, but ISO-JOE DOES NOT WORK.

If they are going to isolate someone, go Iso-Teague. At least he can get in the lane and draw contact against anyone. Sh-t, run the Chicago offense, with Teague playing the role of Rose, Josh the role of Noah, and Joe the role of Kyle Korver standing in the corner waiting for the pass. I’d have more confidence in that than iso-Joe.

Joe Johnson is playing like garbage this is where Larry Drew gets me. He will ride Joe when he is having off nights and just let him continue to play. But if Teague or somebody else is hot he will pull them right in the middle of their run… Its just puzzling how you start kirk over Pargo soon as he comes back I understand over time that he will trump Pargo but Pargo was playing good. I would give Kirk mins after Pargo and more mins depending on how Pargo or Kurt is playing. Put Joe on the bench sometimes when he is out of sync and talk too him tell him what you need him to do if his shot not falling dont just keep shooting fadeaway jumpshots. Tell him to at least try and pentrate and get fouled or look for someone thats has a better shot. Tell him hey if you are going to drive don’t hold the ball dribbling for 20 sec then try to drice with 4secs left on the shot clock! Drew pull Joe out and talk too him sometime then put him back in be a coach I have never seen him pull Joe aside Never. Even Lebron coach pull him to the side from time 2 time!

Yodaddybrother,

Zaza has never had the chance to start.

ZaZa started in ’05-06, and averaged 12 pts, 8 rebs in 31 mins. Not bad numbers, but that Hawks team went 26-56. Obviously its not all Zaza’s fault, but if you watch the game, its not just about numbers with him.

He was a backup with the Bucks, and has been mostly a backup with the Hawks. There is a reason for that. he is very inconsistent if you have to rely on hm for 32 mpg.

It is such a mind-numbingly idiotic usage of personnel. Joe is not a good enough player to sacrifice the team’s offensive flow to “get him going”. If he doesn’t have it, let the other players carry the load. Joe is not Kobe. The Hawks can win with him having an off night.

Kaman averages 9 ppg and 6.6 rebs…..why trade for him when we’ve already got Zaza Pachulia at a lower price???

My point is Zaza Pachulia can start at center. He may not set the world on fire but he isn’t a liability like say Jason Collins.

In my opinion he’s the same guy as Bogut, Kaman, Okafor, Noah, Hibbert, Dalembert whoever etc. He’s a decent starting center that will rebound the basketball and is physical. His short arms hinders his offense.

Realistically the only centers you have to worry about are Dwight and Bynum. Everyone else’s center is irrelevant in comparison

There’s no need to trade and blow up the team and add salary for a guy we already have.

Maybe, but I’d like to see what happens if the Hawks as a team just commit to sharing the ball and getting good shots on every possession, without worrying about who is having a good game and who isn’t. Exactly. I’m sure someone with a Synergy account can confirm this, but to my eyes, the two most efficient plays for Joe are the catch-and-shoot (like that last play before the timeout) and when he comes off the curl and catches it with a chance to turn into the lane for the floater. Giving him the ball any farther than 15 feet away from the hoop almost always results in a bad shot by him or a bad shot by Josh.

“Maybe, but I’d like to see what happens if the Hawks as a team just commit to sharing the ball and getting good shots on every possession, without worrying about who is having a good game and who isn’t. The Nuggets did that after the Melo trade and they have become a better team, and this is with Melo being a significantly better scorer than Joe.”

scorers need shots period. in the case of Joe you cant just tell him to get passive, or defer b/c he’s not on early. dude rarely takes bad shots.. and unlike Anthony, he’s a play maker.. a willing passer.

in the case of the nuggets, they have guys that can simply put the ball in the basket. i dont trust the scoring ability of Josh, or Jeff. its just not there.. so they have that option. dont be fooled by that parity though, b/c come playoffs that game slows down. you need a guy who you can give the ball to and have him go get a shot or make a play for others.

Associated Press
SEATTLE — The Seattle SuperSonics began overhauling their basketball operations today, firing head coach Bob Hill and removing Rick Sund as general manager following one of the worst seasons in franchise history.

Seattle went 31-51 in Hill’s only full season as head coach, the Sonics’ worst record since they finished with an identical mark in 1985-86. Only three times in the Sonics’ 40-year history have they finished with a worse record.

Joe is a willing passer. He’s just not good enough at creating his own shot to where giving him the ball and clearing out is a good offensive strategy. If they want to get him shots, run some plays for him to get him the ball in favorable positions. The kind of shots he’s been getting in this game — even during the stretch when he was making them — is not a sustainable offensive strategy.

Post him up on Stuckey, have him coming off curls, or let Teague drive and kick to him. But the sh-t they were doing in the first half, where he would catch it at the high post and back it out to the 3 point line and dribble the clock down, is a recipe for failure.

Josh Smith 2 – 9 FG on his jumper. At least he’s 4 – 4 FT

To win this game, the Hawks almost have to shut out the Pistons from here on out.

Unless someone is going to knock down a 3, the Hawks need to be almost perfect offensively and defensively.

I’m mainly talking about that 2nd quarter, when the Hawks ran a bunch of isolations for him in a row and saw the deficit balloon from 2 to 11. Without that sequence, the Hawks probably win this game.

It’s not Joe getting shots I have a problem with, it’s the idea that he should do all the work to get those shots. The Hawks have other players who are good and can draw defensive attention to make it a lot easier for him.

When the man is ice cold in the second quarter, the Hawks simply gave him the ball and let him throw up bricks in the name of “getting him going”. Without that sequence they win this game in regulation.

Joe is a really talented player. NONE of what I said is meant to take away from how good of a player he is. I am just pointing out that the perimeter isolations don’t get him good shots. @ bigdave

The thing is . . . almost every superstar in the league takes the exact same shots that JJ takes. Whether they make that shot more or less than JJ isn’t even the issue. It’s the fact that those are the types of shots you expect stars and superstar players to take and make.

What pizzes me off more than JJ missing those types of shots, is JJ not even trying to take those shots ( like in the Spurs game ).

Dude was ice cold, but he kept shooting, because he is the scorer on the team.

Since halftime, he’s 10 – 14 FG

In year’s past, he’d just simply stop shooting and would finish the game 3 – 13 FG.

Sometimes, your main guy simply has to keep jacking them up.

Miami barely beat this team by 3 the other day, so Rick Sund can delude himself into thinking the Hawks are as good as Miami.

Great game by Marvin. Good job by Joe to bounce back after halftime. Zaza did a nice job after he was reinserted in the 4th quarter. Solid games by T-Mac and Josh.

The outlook for this team hasn’t changed for this team though:

Noticed how empty DET’s arena was tonight. goes to show it’s all about winning

**************************

????

How would that arena look if the Pistons had our record? Is your comment somewhat supposed to excuse the weak crowds at Philips, simply because the pubic doesn’t perceive us to be a championship caliber squad, despite our top 5 in the league record?

The problem in ATL is that our attendance doesn’t match how good of a team we are. That’s why people get onto us about the crowds.

But I’m not into a crowd rant tonight. This was a good win, despite how some may spin this. When you’re playing your 3rd road game in 5 nights, and the league has made you travel almost 6,000 miles to play those 3 road games, this is a good win ( despite how weak our opponent is perceived ).

It shouldn’t have taken extended minutes in overtime to close this team out but a win is a win. As long as the Hawks stay 10-15 games above .500 they will make the post season, the question is who will they get in that first round match up and can they win in 7 games. I still see a lot of dumb offensive possessions committed by Josh and Joe…Detroit was missing 3 key players and we barely survived…this is a hollow win..but again..a win is a win..

I agree Just Joe…Definately NEED to get Kenyon Martin. He is the EXACT type of player we are missing. If we get him we become Instantly Elite again, and once Al is ready for the playoffs that trio of Al Horford, Kenyon Martin, and ZaZa Puchulia is unstoppable. Besides, Jason Collins is the worst player in the NBA hands down!! He cant score, he cant rebound, he is not physical and gets dominated down low, he is clumsy and commits lots of turnovers, he is slow, he cant shoot or make free throws, he cant jump at all, he doesnt really do anything at all other than set picks and miss a few shots…

Jason Collins typical stat line- 22 minutes- 0-3 FG- 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers, 4 personal fouls…

Not a fan of the Kenyon Martin move, but any upgrade in talent will be welcomed. A move like that may pay off during the playoffs IF we can get Horford back to 100%. If not, Kenyon isn’t the type of big body we’ll need against more aggressive frontline teams.

We need a “lane clogger”. A guy that can take up space and not easily be moved in the post. And when the ball comes off the rim, he could get the rebound.

If we had the defensive opposite of Zaza, we’d be straight.

WINNING!

Winning makes me so very happy. I can sleep like a baby now. What a thrilling nail biter, Joe and Marvin really stepped up.

With “The Black Ninja” going down, can we really afford to lose Kirk now? Will Kirk even hold up, he looked so winded and, outa’ shape in the 4th. I know Drew did not want to play him that many minutes … Be careful with Kirk, he may have a re-injury or exacerbation if over used.

Some people mentioned Shellhead the Foreclosure as a possible trade target, seeing as how he makes the veterans’ minimum. He started today for New Jersey and put up 7 boards, 3 blocks, and zero turnovers in 35 minutes in a win over Cleveland.

The crazy thing is, New Jersey might not want to get rid of him because they are only one game out of the 8th playoff spot. Yes, that is how bad the East is after the top 6 or 7 teams. New Jersey and New York are one game out, and Toronto is 2 games out. And considering that Milwaukee currently has the 8 seed and just lost Bogut, there is a very realistic chance of one of those teams making it.
