Atlanta Hawks at Pistons: Game thread

Auburn Hills, Mich.–Hawks will use same lineup as last game with Zaza Pachulia at center. “It’s not set in stone,” Larry Drew said. “We will stay with it for right now.”

  • Drew said Kirk Hinrich had no issues after his first game back from shoulder surgery. “We are going to ease him back into it,” Drew said. “He still has to get into that playing shape where he can play on a nightly basis. I don’t want to pile too many minutes on him.”
  • Drew said “for right now we will keep [Hinrich] at the one. He could play off the ball some. There are a couple of things I possibly want to experiment with as we move forward: him at some two, Joe [Johnson] at some three, that type of thing.”
  • ESPN.com’s Marc Stein runs down a list of teams who will compete with the Hawks for Kenyon Martin’s services and says K-Mart is looking for a major role on a contender.
  • Drew on the Pistons: “They play a very physical style. That has always been a problem or us in the past. They really bang the boards. I told the guys by no means can we come in here and think these guys are going to lay down. They’ve had some close ballgames that they could have won. Looking back at their last game against Miami they were in perfect position to win.”
  • Damien Wilkins is starting for the Pistons tonight. “Our effort has been a lot better, our fight has been a lot better,” he said. “To me, that’s what we had been lacking the most. We had kind of a glass jaw. Now we have a lot more effort, a lot more fight.”
  • Wilkins on not getting an offer from the Hawks: “It was disappointing. They basically told me they weren’t bringing in anymore perimeter guy and I’d have to fight [for a spot] with Pape Sy and [Jerry] Stackhouse. And then I look up and here they are with Willie Green and two other wings, and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It was fun. I appreciate the opportunity they gave me initially. But I miss the guys.”
  • The rec center in northwest Detroit Willie Green came up is now called the Willie Green Center for Physical Fitness. Green attended a ceremony yesterday. “My uncle [Gary Green] was coaching a team up there,” Green said. “He used to open up the gym for us, so we were going up there every day. That’s where I first started playing basketball. It was awesome when I walked in the place. I couldn’t believe the gym was so little. I came from humble beginnings like a lot of us.”

and the best the Hawks have been able to get out of a possession is a Zaza jump shot

“but he is the best option we have at this time.”

I agree, which is why they need to make a trade.

The Pistons attack the basket every time. The Hawks make the one guy who can attack the basket every time give it to a guy who prefers to dribble for 20 seconds and launch a jump shot.

That was a Marvin-like play by Josh. On the other end, Monroe in a similar situation uses his body to make the layup.

i dont think we can win w/ out Joe having a good game. not when you’re missing another productive starter. i mean, had he gotten hot in Mil. thats an L.

Bob, it’s more like LD has been handed the keys to a pretty nice car and he’s stomping on the A/C button and the windshield wiper knob trying to figure out what gets the car going.

@Obrien

Kaman averages 9 ppg and 6.6 rebs…..why trade for him when we’ve already got Zaza Pachulia at a lower price???

My point is Zaza Pachulia can start at center. He may not set the world on fire but he isn’t a liability like say Jason Collins.

In my opinion he’s the same guy as Bogut, Kaman, Okafor, Noah, Hibbert, Dalembert whoever etc. He’s a decent starting center that will rebound the basketball and is physical. His short arms hinders his offense.

Realistically the only centers you have to worry about are Dwight and Bynum. Everyone else’s center is irrelevant in comparison

There’s no need to trade and blow up the team and add salary for a guy we already have.

“I really can’t get my mind around how astoundingly dumb it is to tell Teague to give the ball up after coming over the half court line and watch Joe try to create his own shot.” -najeh-
_____________

This drives me up the wall too. Why cant Joe run curls like: Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton and Reggie Miller to draw his defender and make them work on D, instead of drawing triple teams and passing it to Josh and ‘nem? Will somebody please tell me why?

Good to see Joe show up.

“i dont think we can win w/ out Joe having a good game. not when you’re missing another productive starter. ”

Maybe, but I’d like to see what happens if the Hawks as a team just commit to sharing the ball and getting good shots on every possession, without worrying about who is having a good game and who isn’t. The Nuggets did that after the Melo trade and they have become a better team, and this is with Melo being a significantly better scorer than Joe.

Zaza fumbles a Teague pass out of bounds in the lane. No turnover charged, but that is a trip to the free throw line for a big man with good hands.
