Atlanta Hawks at Pistons: Game thread
7:35 pm January 27, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Auburn Hills, Mich.–Hawks will use same lineup as last game with Zaza Pachulia at center. “It’s not set in stone,” Larry Drew said. “We will stay with it for right now.”
- Drew said Kirk Hinrich had no issues after his first game back from shoulder surgery. “We are going to ease him back into it,” Drew said. “He still has to get into that playing shape where he can play on a nightly basis. I don’t want to pile too many minutes on him.”
- Drew said “for right now we will keep [Hinrich] at the one. He could play off the ball some. There are a couple of things I possibly want to experiment with as we move forward: him at some two, Joe [Johnson] at some three, that type of thing.”
- ESPN.com’s Marc Stein runs down a list of teams who will compete with the Hawks for Kenyon Martin’s services and says K-Mart is looking for a major role on a contender.
- Drew on the Pistons: “They play a very physical style. That has always been a problem or us in the past. They really bang the boards. I told the guys by no means can we come in here and think these guys are going to lay down. They’ve had some close ballgames that they could have won. Looking back at their last game against Miami they were in perfect position to win.”
- Damien Wilkins is starting for the Pistons tonight. “Our effort has been a lot better, our fight has been a lot better,” he said. “To me, that’s what we had been lacking the most. We had kind of a glass jaw. Now we have a lot more effort, a lot more fight.”
- Wilkins on not getting an offer from the Hawks: “It was disappointing. They basically told me they weren’t bringing in anymore perimeter guy and I’d have to fight [for a spot] with Pape Sy and [Jerry] Stackhouse. And then I look up and here they are with Willie Green and two other wings, and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It was fun. I appreciate the opportunity they gave me initially. But I miss the guys.”
- The rec center in northwest Detroit Willie Green came up is now called the Willie Green Center for Physical Fitness. Green attended a ceremony yesterday. “My uncle [Gary Green] was coaching a team up there,” Green said. “He used to open up the gym for us, so we were going up there every day. That’s where I first started playing basketball. It was awesome when I walked in the place. I couldn’t believe the gym was so little. I came from humble beginnings like a lot of us.”

I doubt that it was a level 4 sprain, Slimjr. Dude wouldn’t be walking on the court if it was that bad, let alone hobbling. Looks like a level one to me, maybe two.

Northcyde,
It was a great ONE NIGHT. Didn’t know that playing good for just one night was acceptable, but whatevaaaaaaaa….
*******************
Well just give him props for one night then. If Radmanovic had a night like this, people would be calling for him to be the starter, despite him playing subpar most of the year.
I know people may be tired of Marvin, but at least give that dude his props when he shows up. Because when the game was on the line, he made winning basketball plays.

Noticed how empty DET’s arena was tonight. goes to show it’s all about winning
**************************
????
How would that arena look if the Pistons had our record? Is your comment somewhat supposed to excuse the weak crowds at Philips, simply because the pubic doesn’t perceive us to be a championship caliber squad, despite our top 5 in the league record?
The problem in ATL is that our attendance doesn’t match how good of a team we are. That’s why people get onto us about the crowds.
But I’m not into a crowd rant tonight. This was a good win, despite how some may spin this. When you’re playing your 3rd road game in 5 nights, and the league has made you travel almost 6,000 miles to play those 3 road games, this is a good win ( despite how weak our opponent is perceived ).

This is only the 2nd or 3rd Knicks game I am watching this year, but from what little I’ve seen, I’m pretty sure Woody has implanted some microchips in D’Antoni’s brain and forced him to run the Woody offense. Everyone who doesn’t have the ball for the Knicks stands around watching on every possession.

It shouldn’t have taken extended minutes in overtime to close this team out but a win is a win. As long as the Hawks stay 10-15 games above .500 they will make the post season, the question is who will they get in that first round match up and can they win in 7 games. I still see a lot of dumb offensive possessions committed by Josh and Joe…Detroit was missing 3 key players and we barely survived…this is a hollow win..but again..a win is a win..

Really?
He played 22 minutes. Couldn’t have been too busted.
Was his hands busted too? He only had 3 assists?
Was his brain busted? Dude had 3 turnovers to follow the 6 he had earlier this week.
Looks like hes trying to earn his way back on the bench if you ask me.

I agree Just Joe…Definately NEED to get Kenyon Martin. He is the EXACT type of player we are missing. If we get him we become Instantly Elite again, and once Al is ready for the playoffs that trio of Al Horford, Kenyon Martin, and ZaZa Puchulia is unstoppable. Besides, Jason Collins is the worst player in the NBA hands down!! He cant score, he cant rebound, he is not physical and gets dominated down low, he is clumsy and commits lots of turnovers, he is slow, he cant shoot or make free throws, he cant jump at all, he doesnt really do anything at all other than set picks and miss a few shots…
Jason Collins typical stat line- 22 minutes- 0-3 FG- 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers, 4 personal fouls…
Are you serious Sund???!!!!

Kirk will start if JT is out with the injury. Kirk played so much tonight because of the injury. And look – by the end of the game he was really getting his rhythm back. That took around 45 minutes of game time….
All you JT fans do realize that we can’t go through the rest of his career with an awful backup PG just so the kid doesn’t get rattled, right? It’s his job to lose.

Not a fan of the Kenyon Martin move, but any upgrade in talent will be welcomed. A move like that may pay off during the playoffs IF we can get Horford back to 100%. If not, Kenyon isn’t the type of big body we’ll need against more aggressive frontline teams.
We need a “lane clogger”. A guy that can take up space and not easily be moved in the post. And when the ball comes off the rim, he could get the rebound.
If we had the defensive opposite of Zaza, we’d be straight.
