Atlanta Hawks at Spurs: Game thread

I’m not in San Antonio and neither is Chris Vivlamore. Bob Rathbun is there and he says Kirk Hinrich will play.

Here is a place for you to discuss the game. I will post my two cents when it’s over.

Have to put Hinrich down as “most-likely- to-be-traded”. I would almost be willing to bet on it.

By the way, I stood right next to Hinrich at the open practice. He is really small and has very little definition. Not surprised he gets hurt so often. Looks like a good gust of wind would knock him over.

The guy is a good player, though. I like him.

FTPB,

Najeh,

Last year, it was M-V-Teague. This year, it should be M-I-P. I’m on the bandwagon too.

If Kirk plays well, his trade value will increase. But if he plays well, Rick and the ASG will use that as an excuse to keep him.

Why? One reason being trading him would more than likely force them to pick up extra salary for next year (I dont think there are many good deals where Kirk can be traded for another expiring).

Sorry Najeh, As much as I like the deal, I dont think Kirk for Kaman will happen.

I really hope in a week or so we start Kirk at the off guard and Joe at the 3……..Hinrich has been able to guard people like Wade in the past.

“As much as I like the deal, I dont think Kirk for Kaman will happen.”

Doesn’t have to be Kaman. The three way Kirk trade I’ve been posting with the Lakers sending a pick to the 3rd team allows them to get pretty much anyone on any team, including several players who make less than Kirk this season and/or are expiring. Sund just has to get creative.

I’d rather see Zaza on Duncan and Josh on whoever plays center for the Spurs (Blair or Splitter). That lets Josh play help defense and doesn’t force him to guard someone who is 3 inches and 30 pounds bigger than him.

He’s better than Collins (in my opinion also better than Zaza), rebounds well, blocks shots, and his contract is expiring. I have almost exclusively limited my discussion of possible big man trade targets to people with expiring contracts.

“It seems like bad Josh has shown up tonight.”

He made a couple of dumb plays (a terrible outlet pass, leaving Bonner open on the perimeter) but for the most part I don’t think it’s been bad Josh as much as Duncan shutting him down with his size and defensive technique. That is just a bad matchup for Josh even if he is playing well. He’s done OK when matched up on Blair, but it’s plainly obvious he can’t handle Duncan on either end.

Astro Joe

Like Cage, yep. Not every superstar combination is the right superstar combination. I’m not sure that one would work regardless of who was coaching the team (inclduing someone with a more traditional offense). And I think Baron could make it even worse as he has never been a guy content in being a classic floor general (which is what is needed to ensure those thick egos don’t get bruised). But, they have some nice trade assets if they recognize that they need to blow that team up sooner than later.

“Ivan is -16 in 12 mins. T-Mac is -10 in 9 minutes. The bench as a whole has not given the Hawks much.”

I agree, but at least in those cases, mismatches are unavoidable because of personnel issues. The Hawks simply don’t have a better big man than Ivan. The Hawks have a guard rotation that has worked, and LD is screwing it up for no reason trying to get Kirk minutes. Aside from knocking down a couple of long 2s, Kirk has done nothing in this game, and yet he has received 12 minutes at point guard hopelessly trying to guard Parker and Joseph. This is LD’s fault and was completely avoidable.

Getting outrebounded by 10 (only 4 offensive boards tonight while allowing 7 to the Spurs). Did I mention that the Spurs are in the bottom 10 in the league in rebounding? We’ll be there soon.

The Spurs is a well coached team and their players know how to play and their bench really hasn’t changed much. The Hawks are the opposite, they are going to struggle against teams that know what they want to do and how to do it. Like a lot of teams this season their isn’t enough practice days to work out the kinks and get guys more acclimated to one another. Larry Drew is trying to get Hinrich back on deck and guys like Pargo who are on a non guaranteed contract isn’t going to see a lot of minutes and he may get waived so that they can get a big man for the second half of the season.

While Joe and Josh could have played better, the Hawks lost this game because a) they have no big man depth and b) LD is a dumbass who prioritized working Kirk into the rotation over winning the game. If they had a viable big coming off the bench and didn’t waste 12 minutes of competitive game time wishing and hoping that Kirk can stay in front of Parker and Joseph in his first game back, they would at least have kept it close with a chance to win.

Partly yeah, seeing as how that team hit .250 and mostly won grind it out, low scoring games — not exactly the pinnacle of excitement for casual fans. But you can expand that to include legitimately contending for championships, which the Braves did throughout the 90s while drawing well.

Spurs bench have contributed 46 pts so far…..that’s a lil of an abnormality. Inserting Hinrich in the rotation with the bench has probably affected the chemistry because now guys have to figure out how to play with him and vice versa.

We need to wait til this team is 30 games into the season before we can seriously assess what this teams chances are in making the post season because the first 10 -20 games of the season is like an extended preseason regardless If the season is 66 or 82.

hittman jamillion – is that the average hawks blogger excuse now??? “but but look at the Lakers…”

This isnt your grandfather’s Lakers team. The 2011-2012 Lakers are a damn 1st or 2nd round team themselves, and now they are the “bar” for the Hawks. Just Pathetic!

It’s not all doom and gloom. The Hawks beat the Blazers without Al and beat the Bulls and Heat with him. Their ceiling isn’t any higher than the 2nd round, but they are better than last year. But they absolutely have to upgrade the center position. They cannot continue to roll with Zaza and Ivan playing all 48 minutes there. Against teams with quality depth inside like the Spurs, they will continue to get killed.

Hinrich for Nazr is a good one because Nazr is a very solid defender (underrated IMO) and OKC could use an experienced back-up for Westbrook. I think the only trade that works is with a team that needs a back-up PG as much as they want an expiring contract. But I would still wait until closer to the trade deadline before pulling the trigger on anything. Hawks would have been expected to lose in San Antonio if Horford were healthy and Kevin Willis was coming off the bench wearing his elbow pads.

ClassicHawks, Elite win or at least compete against good teams on the road. We get embarrassed. This team might get to the second round. Think about it, we have MARVIN and ZAZA as starters along with “Heartless” Joe and “Dumb” Josh. That type of GUTTER TRASH won’t win a championship.

I have Kirk going to the Lakers in all those trades, with the Lakers sending a pick to the 3rd team and the 3rd team sending the Hawks a big man. The Lakers have an $8 million trade exception and a glaring need for a point guard. It makes too much sense for them not to be interested in Kirk.

Joe, it doesn’t matter that Splitter is more agile because he’s still a soft Euro and Collins would get in his way. Soft Euros can become tough Euros against shorter competition, but very few if any get tough against physical competition. I don’t think Collins could have stopped him but its better than putting a 6′ 8″ guy against him.

Pop calls TO with 1 minute gone in 3rd quarter and benches FOUR STARTERS. At the time, they were up by 4. Hawks were down by 9 with their starters playing against mostly the Spurs second unit before LD brought in some bench players. They were still down by 9 when Josh received a technical foul. After that, game over as the Spurs went up by 15 to end the quarter. The startes lost the momentum when Pop put in Bonner, Splitter, Leonard and Joseph against OUR starters with 11:00 minutes left in the 3rd. Don’t fool yourselves, our starters didn’t play well as a unit. Had it not been for that 2nd quarter rush, this game would have been over much earlier.

Joe, Pop and his staff are better coaches and that was my biggest fear coming in this game. I believe LD is an upgrade over Woody, but that’s just because Woody didn’t make any adjustments during a game. LD and his staff still don’t have a great feel for personnel or for game flow. The Spurs aren’t a great team, which is probably why Miami destroyed them earlier this month, but they do have a great coaching staff. Hopefully we can really learn from this game.

Why did Hinrich take away minutes from Teague – JT0 was the only bright spot of the game. Hinrich understandably played horrible as far as turnovers went. Hinrich should have play the two today. Sund needs to trade him for a big ASAP. In the meantime Hinrich should see even more reduced minutes….Nothing else to see here, just another disgusting road loss to a great basketball team.

Folks are going to have to get over the hatred of Horford. He doesn’t have moves like McHale, but he’s still amongst the league leaders in FG % every year, he can get double-digit rebounds, and he plays smart on both ends. People who know basketball know his value. Without him, you’re depending on Jason freaking Collins, nothing else needs to be said.

Some of us criticize even when they beat bad teams because sometimes, it isn’t pretty. Like the Minnesota game. The bottom line is, just like every other team in this state, they haven’t proven they can beat the good teams regularly, and that’s why they don’t take the next step. The public has a right to complain because we see the ceiling and know when the teams aren’t ready for primetime.
