Atlanta Hawks at Bucks: Game thread
7:56 pm January 23, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Milwaukee–Zaza Pachulia is the starter at center. “He’s been playing well lately,” Larry Drew said. “He has played well against the Bucks. So we elected to go with him.”
- Zaza has been as productive and efficient as usual but his minutes have fluctuated. “It’s hard, but you have to be a pro,” he said. “I’ve been in a situation where I was getting mad previous years. But you learn one thing, you can’t control it or make it better. All you can do is be professional. I am not worried about that. I’ve been in the league long enough to realize my role and what I can do, where my strength is, what I can do for a team.”
- Included among the keys on Milwaukee’s pregame board: “Match Pachulia’s energy.”
- Jeff Teague on Drew keeping him as the starter when Hinrich returns: “That feels real good to hear. But I really can’t control it too much. I’ve just got to go out there and play hard and keep playing my game.”
- Scott Skiles on how the schedule has affected the Bucks: “We’re trying to be smart and and build in rest and have the most energy we can for the game and at the same time prepare properly. It’s very difficult to do. It’s one of the reasons we feel like our defense hasn’t been what it normally would be. Hopefully we’ve gotten far enough into the season so it’s something we can be more consistent with.”
- The Bucks ground down the Heat to win a low-possession game last night in Miami after doing the same to the Knicks Friday in a high-possession game in New York.
- Skiles though the offensive execution was good at Miami: “We just didn’t make shots. I think we are moving in the right direction but that doesn’t necessarily show up when you shoot 35 percent.”
- Like always, shot selection will be key for the Hawks. “When we e talk about playing on the road, we talk about playing with a smartness,” Drew said. “We can’t get seduced into taking a bunch of jump shots. We have to move the ball from one side of the floor to the other and attack the basket. Where we’ve gotten in trouble, particularly on the road, is settling for too many jump shots.”

Very silly to assume all is well without just because you beat a terrible Bucks team. The problem remains rebounding, you got out-rebounded again tonight. Better teams will make you pay for it, but the Bucks are garbage. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you want to make a deep playoff run, you have to hit the glass, and while it’s good to see this team do well, they aren’t better on the boards team without Horford. Ranked somewhere like 14th in that dept.

Agreed !
E.I. had 10 points / also had 5 off rebs.
I’m certain all his points must have been on put-backs.
(or it seemed that way)
I reckon V-Rad is being taught a lesson
as he is the only one on the team who does not Box Out.
Yes, I’m a smart ass, and a sarcastic one at that.
The sarcasm was not directed at any one person,
and particularly not at Najeh.

I dont think it is hating on al. His role seems almost redundant on this team. We need a center that can rebound like zaza but can put the ball in the basket with authority when he is crowded by two or more defenders. Zaza gets smothered and we end up with no points.

Lol @ Northcyde. Do you even watch the games or do you just idolize your useless per 38 numbers?
Marvin is the worst starter on a Playoff team in this league.
I’ll let Rod add any necessary comments to my argument although there are none to add.
I still have not see Marvin absorb contact and finish at the rim. Maybe I just have a bad memory.

get ‘em boy! you ARE the man. it’s all playing out just like wrote the script. everything you said for the pas two years has come to fruition.
you can heal your body, get proper nutrition and some well needed rest now. this team has come together in the spirit of winning until the boss returns. we miss AL big tine, but you cant tell it right now, because we play perimeter now.

I only saw the 4th, but I thought this was a Great Win! JJ and Josh really showed maturity and leadership. JJ played like a Star with the floaters and free-throws. Josh made a great space to Tracy, along with a hugh 3 and free-throws. Jeff gave up the 3, but I’m not mad at him, on first glance I think he felt like he wasn’t ready to shoot.
Jeff had some turns, but his threat to drive changes how teams play the HAWKS. Go Jeff, keep doing your THING!!
GO HAWKS!!

Ken Strickland cracks me up when he’s talking Hawks or Falcons. But seriously though. Never, ever bench Teague. Make sure he gets his rest, which is why Kirk can never start, cause as much as I like Pargo I just can’t trust him so Kirk has to be the backup PG.
Ditto on the Josh Smith love earlier. It burns my butt to hear all the hate for the hometown kid. Yeah he had a little attitude problem sometimes. But he has played his azz off years as a Hawk, and too many of y’all is just damn disrespectful. Call him out for a bad decision or bad game is one thing. Run him out of town? Just damn stupid. Must be carpetbagger ATLien wanna be’s.
Zaza, Zaza, Zaza. I really wish I could see Zaza as the starting center on a championship team. But I can’t. Let me try again. Nope. Can’t do it. So we have to get a big. There has to be one somewhere. Well maybe if Jeff Teague picks his game up (I think he can be a 18ppg, 8 apg kind of PG, with well above average defense), Joe keeps shooting, no matter how much he misses, and Josh keep finding ways to amaze us every night; we might overcome a little ZaZa.
I’m done with Marvin though. Got to be somebody somewhere 6′9″ or better that we can get for him in trade. My problem is that he always leaves me thinking that he could do more, or be more, if he just tried a little damn harder. When he tries, he’s not that bad; he just doesn’t try enough. He can’t be tired, cause LD makes sure he gets plenty of rest. Maybe he can go somewhere else and get his head right. I’d rather see Joe at SF, and start Willie Green at SG. Still have Kirk, TMac, and Pargo ready to pull the trigger off the bench. Joe might have an easier time defending most SF at this stage anyway, and he can get his shot against most of them.
Here’s the real question. Can that old azz bench hold up through a compressed season? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE THE HAWKS BENCH! Best they’ve had in decades (I’ve been a fan since the 70’s). But Pargo’s knees, TMac’s backs, Vlad just looking old, Stack just is old… If they hold up, we contend for a title.

Grandad how long are you going to be under cover?
Damn Josh is a player. A naturalist for the game. Straight out of high school. Yall need to cast your vote his way, we are not a major market area, so to get our players out there, and to attract stars like DHoward we need to show support for the locals.
Hawks are playing as a unit, good chemistry. Its the JJ and Josh show down the stretch and knocking teams out. Winning when we are suppose too and getting it done on the road.
Nice.
Its a good day to be a hawk fan. Can’t ask for much more that this. Well we still need a center not called a big.
I dont expect us to sweep the Lakers and Clippers and Heat without a center. Lets get real. Be we are playing the best ball this team can play with this squad. With the right center we can beat any body any time. Without the center we are better than most. I not going to put an unrealistic goal on the hawks and say beat everybody all the time and win a championship with this crew. That’s not realistic or fair.
I say keep up the good work. Good job bench, good Job starters, Good Job, Josh, JJ and Teague.
Just keep the chemistry, every body, know your role and stay in your lane.
No hate-en
