C-Viv reporting from Philips Arena.
Hawks coach Larry Drew did not use the word “quit” again to describe the Hawks’ performance Friday night at the 76ers. However, the coach did not back off his post-game comments.
Drew would not single any particular player out. He also said he has not address the team following his post-game comments.
Here are some quotes from Drew during his pre-game interview:
“I’m not going to call out any names. It got a little tough and we didn’t respond. We did not respond.”
“Yes [he stands by his post-game comments], I went back and watched it. We had a good first half. They made a run in the third quarter and, as stated, we didn’t respond to it, which is very disappointing. I’ve made statements in the past, I really thought we had turned that corner a little bit in that situation. Teams are going to make runs. Good teams are going to make runs. Philadelphia is a really good team. They played very well. We talked about it at halftime, that that team was going to make a run. We couldn’t fold the tent when they did. We had to mentally be strong and push our way through it when they did. That was not the response we got when they made the run.”
“What I said last night after the game is done. It’s time to move on.”
“Shot selection [was the reason for the poor second half]. Bad shot selection against a team as good as Philadelphia. Bad shot selection is just as good as turnovers. That’s what gets the team going… For a half we played and followed our game plan. Then we came out in the third quarter and completely lost focus of what got us the lead in the first half.”
“Certainly having a key guy like Al [Horford] that can bring some stability in a situation like that. He’s been the type of guy that would get guys to settle down and was vocal in the huddles. Those are the type of situations where you can use a guy like that because his presence along, being on the floor and being in the huddle, is definitely felt.”
“I think it’s everybody’s responsibility, mine included, when you get in those situations you have to be very aware of the flow of the game. Players on the floor have to be aware of the situation. Certainly our guys felt the momentum shift in that third quarter yesterday. And yet, we continue to be seduced into taking ill-advised shots. I just thought we had turned the corner from that. That was the disappointing part. We will bounce back from it. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not a situation where we are going to cave in. We are going to learn from last night’s game and we are going to continue to try to get better and better.”
Here are a couple comments from Jerry Stackhouse, the 16-year NBA veteran:
“Hopefully we respond positively. It’s one game. In a long NBA season you are going to have nights like that. But it was a little disappointing to see with almost four minutes left in the game, a 12-point game, we called off the dogs so to speak. But I guess from being around this group [coach Larry Drew] sensed something he’s seen before. Hopefully we can get past that. We’ve talked about growth a lot with this group. Maybe the message after the game and the fact we have a game right back today, we can come back and make amends for not finishing the game the way we should have.”
“It’s on the individual. When you are dealing with a team you’ve got to know which players to push and which players to coddle. The guys that need coddling might be affected differently. We hope not. Hopefully everybody looks at it for what it was. I think his comments were spot on. Now it’s just a matter of responding. More so than what he said last night, he’s looking for a response. Hopefully we can give the proper response tonight.”

If you’re the best remaining rebounder on your team, why take repeated long twos, when you can go inside get a better look and maybe put it back if you miss?
In that scenario, you get two, a rebound and 1. That’s stuffing your stat sheet right there. Besides, who’s gonna’ rebound your misses, if you’re the best remaining rebounder? That’s not BBIQ – that’s common sense.

THE HAWKS ABSOLUTELY QUIT LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!! Every starter should forfeit their paycheck for last night’s game. Atrocious.
Look at Smoove’s shot selection last night. They baited him into jumpers, doubling off of his man to clog the paint. The book is out. And why in the he!! did we o=not exploit jody meeks (6-4) guarding Marvin(6-9)??????? The 76′ers took Iggy and defended Joe and we never exploited the mismatch. The Hawks gave up and shame on anybody who disputes it. Every game is important, especially at the pro level. LOOK AT JOE’s STAT LINE. IVE DEFENDED JOE AS MUCH AS ANYBODY BUT IT WAS ALMOST OFFENSIVE WITH THE LACK OF EFFORT HE GAVE.
Smoove’s arrogance continues not only with his shot selection but also with his post game analysis. I hate to say it, but if they Hawks don’t get on Smoove for his poor shot selection(non-jumpers included), we are going to lose when those bad shots don’t fall. Does anybody else notice the terrible running-contested jumpers and step-back fade away’s Smoove takes?……The worst shots i’ve ever seen.

Chris,
If you get a chance, could you ask LD about the rebounding discrepancy last night, and also, any updates about a possible big? Hawks were -18 in rebounding last night. We cannot win if we’re being outrebounded that badly.
And for those who havent seen the February schedule, here it is.
Memphis, Philly, Phoenix, Pacers, @ Orlando, @ Miami, @ Lakers, @ Suns, @ Blazers, @ Bulls, @ Knicks, Orlando, Golden State.
How confident are you playing those games with ZaZa and Twin as your centers?

also slimjr, i made the same reference to josh being taken over by the bosh attack he sometimes thinks he has in himself. yup go with it when ya got it josh otherwise wait until the next game and go to the hole. you dont deserve to think of yourself as the go to guy who can shoot himself out of it. josh look in the mirror or the stats and the games you are huge you shoot 55% and above because you dont settle. anything else you end up being fodder for the abuse everyone gives you.

joe pa gone. hmm, i have seen it before where when a man losses his purpose he fades fast. he deserved better than the way he was treated. good article in the washington post recently with him. he sadly was very naive in his thinking and a very narrow old school perspective as well to think others would take care of things that held such a price on doing the right thing. he was almost military in his approach to things that you let the superiors do what they should and not question it. anyway, he had his issues, as we all do, but for the most part his legacy should not include the man who fooled a lot of people that should have figured it out besides a very narrow focused, obsessed football coach.

Ivan needs the minutes behind Zaza. No sense even playing around with his minutes anymore. The dude may be undersized, but he plays and ACTS like he’s a bigger player. He’s an active body around the rim and he has a decent arsenal of offensive moves. And while he may not can guard the bigger post players around the rim, he can defend the post players who like to face up and put the ball on the floor.
Stop playing with Ivan, coach. Just give that man consistent minutes.

This from AP concerning Kirk and Al’s injury return timelines:
“ATLANTA — Hawks guard Kirk Hinrich, who has missed the first 17 games of the season while recovering from left shoulder surgery, said Saturday he hopes to play during Atlanta’s upcoming five-game trip.
Hinrich started in 22 of his 24 games with Atlanta last season after he was traded to the Hawks from Washington. He averaged 10.2 points and 4.0 assists overall.
Hinrich had surgery in November and he is trying to beat his projected recovery time of three to four months. He said before Saturday night’s game against Cleveland he will be with the Hawks on their road trip which begins Monday at Milwaukee.
“I hope I’ll be playing sometime on this trip,” he said.
Jeff Teague has taken over as Atlanta’s starting point guard.
Meanwhile, Dr. Xavier Duralde, who performed the surgery this week to repair center Al Horford’s torn left pectoral muscle, said Saturday the All-Star is progressing well in his recovery.
Horford was injured going for a rebound in a Jan. 11 game at Indiana. He is expected to be out three to four months and could miss the remainder of the regular season.
Duralde checked Horford on Saturday and said the center can begin strengthening work in six weeks.
Duralde said the incision is in Horford’s left arm pit.”
So Al cannot even begin strength exercises until the 1st week of March – he may be back the middle of April, we’ll see.
But Kirk is planning on playing on this road trip. Interesting

Al wont make it back this year. being in physical shape is not the same as being in player shape. and it will take a while to sync with the team. Al will have to earn his position back if hes not traded or amnestied. His arm wont have full rotation right away. He will have to learn to use it all over again.Whats more, its now a weak spot and he may hurt it again. He almost blew out an ankle a couple years back in the playoff and so Al is really very injury prone.
Lets get rid of this guy while he still has a little value. I said that before when the Magic was interested and then got injured. Now the trade appear over and his value dropping. Please trade him before he has so many injuries that nobody will take a chance on him.
He may not make it back from this injury.

Mike D’Antoni deserves to get fired after leading the New York Knicks to a 6-10 record after 16 games this season. I heard Larry Hughes was quoted as saying that he [D'Antoni] plays mind games with his players. He [D'Antoni] unnecessarily benched Nate Robinson for a month [approx. 12-14 games] for essentially taking a practice shot at the Knicks own goal after a quarter-ending buzzer sounded. Nate Robinson’s first game back from that suspension was when he [Robinson] lit up the Hawks for, I believe, 41 or 42 points in Atlanta. D’Antoni, in his first year with the Knicks, told Jamal Crawford that he really loved his [Crawford's] game and he wanted to make him [Crawford] an All-Star with the Knicks but, after the first 11 games with the Knicks during the 2008-2009 regular season, Crawford was shipped to the Golden State Warriors. This guy, D’Antoni, is a complete phony, fraud, and a pathological liar; he cannot be trusted. Mike D’Antoni is extremely overrated[sp.?] as a quality head coach in the NBA. During his tenure with the Phoenix Suns, D’Antoni had an experienced, outstanding point guard in Steve Nash who knew how to run a fast-paced, high-powered offense. Steve Nash is an excellent passer, facilitator, distributer and play-maker. Steve Nash is such a great floor general that he is basically a coach on the court; he knows how to quarterback an NBA team from an offensive standpoint. D’Antoni has an overall losing record with the Knicks. Last season ['10-'11], the Knicks finished with a record of 42-40 and made the playoffs as a sixth [6th] seed but were swept 4-0 by the Celtics. This guy [D'Antoni] has two max[imum contract] players [Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire] and a top-tier center [Tyson Chandler] and his team still has a losing record. I say give this guy [D'Antoni] the boot and give the team over to Mike Woodson. The NY Knicks’ players are not responding to his [D'Antoni's] message and have clearly given up on him [Mike D'Antoni].

KHinrich is already under contract, and even though he’s inactive and on IR, his salary still counts toward our salary and luxury tax figures. Therefore, our salary and luxury cap figures will remain the same when he returns, so we won’t have to cut anyone, unless we choose to do so. I believe we’ll make our 1st cut just before salaries become guaranteed, which is sometime in Feb.
It seems that VRad is in a bit of a slump, but Pargo, Green and TMac have certainly taken up the slack. IJohnson does so many little, but very important things that don’t appear on the stat sheet. Johnson, Green, TMac, VRad and Pargo has given us far more DEF, rebounding, scoring, assists, steals, 3pt shooting, versatility, and overall production, than any bench we’ve had this decade.
Teague has already become a weapon on both ends of the court, and he’s only going to get better.

Too bad our resident Lame Duck may have present company IF, Kirk goes back into hibernation and assume a Lame Duck role as well to avoid being traded.
I know the trade deadline has been extended until some point in March. Does anyone think Kirk may thwart his come back to damage his trade value by not showing his wares?
The main thing working against him is that attractive expiring 8M contract. IMHO
Problem is, what center will shake loose for 8M or slightly less to get The ASKG back under the 12:43:51 AM by the deadline? Najeh has been pushing for Kaman, I like that.

The Hawks blew out a team they are supposed to blow out. Good to see them bounce back from Friday’s disappointing loss, but they did what they were supposed to do. Can’t take too much away from this game than that.
One thing I did like, though, is that they seemed to start the 3rd quarter with a sense of determination to not suffer a similar letdown like the Sixers game. Maybe LD’s questionable motivational tactics got through to them, maybe they just got tired of letting teams back in to games, or maybe Cleveland just sucks. In any case hopefully it continues on the road trip.

If Pargo, Green and TMac keep producing like they’re currently producing, we just might see Hinrich traded after all. Also, Is Kaman even available? The problem with trading for Kaman is I believe he has an expiring contract as well. So I don’t see New Orleans trading a starting 7′ Big with an expiring contract for a backup combo guard, also with an expiring contract.
Now, adding Zaza might get their attention, but we’d be left in a bind if he refused to resign. I’ve read statements about teams being interested in signing Prizybilla, and how he’s tired of the Blazers calling him. What exactly is his status? Is he healthy enough to play, or just being selective. It was said however, that he’s only interested in signing with a title contender. The Blazers have 2 pretty decent 7′+ centers, and both have a history of being fragile and are on IR.

apparantly the game is over for joe pa as he died this am from official family release.
as an aside, in chinese medicine the lung, the site of his cancer, harbors grief. my thoughts were he was very much affected by the scandal and was out of his league in knowing what to do to handle it. as in many, the body told the rest of the story. joe pa died of lung cancer and grief. it didnt surprise me at all when it was announced in such a short time after his firing the site and the plight he would bear:
i hope history is kinder and more compassionate to a not perfect man, like us all, than the cowardly administrators and national media and other henchmen that came out when the story broke. penn state knew this was coming for at least six months and just as they had buried their heads in inactivity before hand they continued to think it would go awaymajd felt the best way to silence the story was to fire joe pa. it wont.

Omission equates to condoning.
How involved was Joe P that he kept his mouth shut? Did Joe own Child pornography?
Was Joe a part of a covert ring of homosexual child molesters?
We may never know the answers because of the cover ups, Joes death and his silence while living.
Now you want some kind legacy for a man who looked the other way while boys were being sodomized by a homosexual.

JeJe, I’m not sure why you would even begin to question a player’s character when his return is AHEAD of schedule. WHy would he be putting in the rehab work to return ahead of schedule if he wants to fake a problem to miss the trade deadline? And why would he want to stay on the Hawks when they are incapable of doing much right (at least according to a handful of bloggers around here)? I think he is busting his butt to get out of Atlanta as fast as possible, wouldn’t that be more consistent with the way many think?
Meanwhile, back in reality, keep an eye on Brad Miller. Sund evidently tried to acquire him last summer and he is returning from his own rehab in the coming weeks. He has an unguaranteed contract next year. Maybe some form of Hinrich + filler for Miller & Ridnaur could work. Personally, I don’t want Pargo as Teague’s backup. We’d be one twisted ankle away from having poor PG play agian (sorry, Pargo may be good in 10-15 minutes/game… but let’s not push it).

phil, i was not defending the man and his actions any more than he did after the event took its toll. he wishes it could have turned out better and said so but he did report it to the correct authorities who actually ere the head of the university park police department. for those unaware, the police department is contained in the university administration to which he reported for work and reported the incident. legally, he was the only person not under any more review from his level up including the president and the prosecutor who personally addressed the press said he did what he was supposed to do and handled it through proper channels. i dont find the guilt, since after the first winds blew in 1998 sandusky was off staff and when the event occurred in 2002 sandusky was not an employee of the school nor obviously a coach on paterno’s staff. seems like bridges had been burned between them. the university continued the relationship forward. many upstanding people were fooled. the list was long and a premier one of people involved with the man and what he supposedly represented.

Pargo, Sloan, Ivan and Stack all have unguaranteed contracts and the Hawks must cut at least 2 (I think) to get under the luxury tax threshold by the end of the season. If they shed some money in a trade, that would also help. If they were really creative, they would create some coaching position for Stack, put him in that role and then cut Stack & Sloan from the players roster.

There was more than one event and more than one boy. at last count more that 10 boys have claims of being molested by Sandusky. Who knows how long this has been going on? when the assistant coach walked in and saw him in the act and the little boy begged for help, it was reported to J. Paterno, who on only one occasion casually mentioned it to the police instead of taking a proactive activist approach he did nothing further, choosing rather to tolerate it than to man up and show leadership.

joe mama, i said two events witnessed on campus, one in 1998 the one in 2002. paterno and the then student coach who witnessed it was in 2002 and then reported it to the head of police in the penn state system and is what they were supposed to do by law. what else could they do? interstingly sandusky was not hired back for 1999 season. in their legal system it is all under the school surveillance and the assistant to the president is the chief of police who were also their bosses in the convoluted scheme in university park pa. so why would you say he didnt report it when he did? it is not the truth and why would you perpetrate something that is a lie? why do you doubt the lead prosecutor as well?
again, there were two purported events on the campus, one in 1998 witnessed by a service employee who later became mentally incompetent, the second in 2002 when sandusky was not an employee by the assistant coach who came to paterno and then the two of them reported it to the police. i really dont know why you dont see it the way it was and reported by the lead prosecutor at the state level. this was breaking in march or april of 2011 and she gave the administration and board a heads up it was coming.
it is very sad and it occurs in homes daily. i treat victims of these types of crimes by their supposed loved ones. it is indefensible to be a part of the crime as any crime. being a witness and doing the correct procedural thing is obviously defensible since he and the assistant coach were not part of the crime by actions legally not taken against either. how do you see it otherwise when there is no justification for your argument?
yup, you are right about ryan’s comment fewer responses when the hawks do it well than when they dont. in the mean time i hope we can find a legit big to bring on board. would love to see sund steal something for nothing. in the mean time put ivan on a crash course to learn the post and leave collins out of the mix as we know what he can and cant do. find out what ivan can do.

Astro,
I agree the Hawks may need to cut 1 or 2 players once Kirk return. Sloan and Stack are probably the most likely candidates. However, if they can’t find a good deal for Hinrich that return a quality big man then I prefer them to sign Sheed. I think a guy like Sheed could contribute more than any other big that’s available including Pryzbilia. It was reported that Sheed is in better condition now than he was with the Celtics. So maybe the year off did him some good and keep in mind he retired on his own will instead of being forced to by injury.

melvin, that is the very common mistake people make.
you know, i have been to church with convicted criminals or people who should have been. you know what could i do about it but live with it? it is a bit exaggerated but he did what he was supposed to do. though sandusky was not convicted because of a bad witness he seemed to break obvious ties with sandusky then not hide evidence when it occurred the second time even though sandusky wasnt an employee of the school or direct hire of his. we all live with a lot of i coulda’s. hope we dont make more of them.
melvin in all of this all the critics never have said exactly what he should have done only he should have done more because there really wasnt anything more once into the system or people would have said so or he would have been served an indicment as well. so what if he had asked more or pressed more without the authority? how many questions like that get ignored or lied about in our own lives where we seek truth?

Melvin, I agree (sight unseen). However, I kind of question how is it that Rasheed hasn’t already been signed if those reports are truly accurate. In a league desperate for quality big man depth, if he is truly sitting there healthy, fit, willing and cheap (that could be the issue), then why isn’t he playing? Frankly, I can’t help but wonder if the same is true for Pryzbilla, Dampier, Fesenko, Gadzuric and others.

Doc, when ever there is multiple report of this type of horrific perversion you can be sure that it could not have continually existed with out some sort of cover up. As a man, as a citizen, as a leader and faith walker, Paterno was position to lead by example. He did not. What was his full involvement that prevented his leadership is not known and perhaps may never be. One thing I believe. He knew not only of the two incidences you references. Im sure he knew much more. Perhaps he was prevented on the grounds of self incrimination. Perhaps. Either way he punted on first down, at a time when the hearts of the little boys needed him most.
The little boys are the victims, not Paterno.

joe mama, it is true. for historical perspective and read the last line…
From Wikipedia,
University Park, Pennsylvania is an unincorporated community in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States, and is the location of the flagship campus of the Pennsylvania State University.
University Park sits within the State College Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Centre County. Most of University Park sits within the borough of State College, while the northeastern part of campus is within College Township.
While most of this campus of the Pennsylvania State University is located in the borough of State College, Pennsylvania, the campus post office was designated University Park, Pennsylvania in 1953 when university president Milton Eisenhower changed the name of the Pennsylvania State College to the present Pennsylvania State University. Most campus buildings have a mailing address of University Park, PA. The ZIP code of University Park, Pennsylvania is 16802. The University Park Airport, although on property owned by the university, has a mailing address of State College, Pennsylvania.
The campus is served by the Penn State University Police.
joe mama i respect you as well, choose not to call names and wish that only that facts be known. all your suggestions are heard but as a long time employee he did what was expected of him and none of those would fly if he started sticking his nose in it and it was fabricated or didnt meet legal findings. then he would have been the one at legal fault. it took the law a long time but it finally came to pass and apparently was honest with legal authorities.
the university is going to pay up big time and my hope similar situations will be handled differently. it is odd that a similar situation occurred in syracuse this year and the head coach lives on, the assistant is gone and the legal fabric seems to be falling away and there be no case. so which way is right? they fired fine but should they or not? is he guilty or not? courts decide it not public opinion as it did with oj. if the glove fits, well?
should we watch big ben r and cheer on tv or even watch another nfl game to boycott them after what he did to a college girl in milledgeville, which is just as disgusting, with his posse of law officers around to clean up the mess so there was no evidence or it was all tainted? have you taken any steps with that one? after all, it was his second event and the first one was just handled out of court this past week. gets messy doesnt it?
my thought was joe pa should have been gone a long time ago. he isnt the perpetrator folks made him out to be nor a demagogue to make themselves feel better, in case sandusky walks. if it can happen to oj it can happen here.

The roster is maxed out at 15, and we’re just over the luxury tax. Cutting Sloan and Stack gets us back under the tax, but leaves no room to sign depth. Those two cuts leave 13 men, only 12 healthy enough to play (assuming Kirk stays healthy). Any injuries and we can’t even dress out a full active roster. Trades are coming, and they may not be for the purpose of upgrading talent. We’ve got to shed some payroll.

It would save the Hawks 3mil this year but they lose Hinrich 8mil expiring deal next year and Oakfor has 2 yrs/ 28 mil remaining of his contract.

Marvin’s contract is 8 mil year for 2 years and Hinrich’s is 8 mil expiring. The Hawks should make the big splash and make the trade for Okafor. This solves the center issue and the Marvin issue. In addition, it would place Al in his rightful position. Moreover, this trade makes the team viable for years. We have a 1st round pick and 4 2nd round picks in this year’s draft. The salary cap and bench issues are solved with rookie contracts.

They are about to embark on a five-city, nine-day road trip that will cover nearly 6,000 miles. It’s one more oddity of the NBA’s compacted schedule this season. The north-south alternating excursion begins in Milwaukee on Monday, goes to San Antonio, Detroit, New Orleans and ends in Toronto on Jan. 31. Three of the legs cover at least 1,000 miles.
“The way I’m looking at it, the one area where we’ve got to grow as a team is we have to be able to play out on the road under abnormal conditions,” coach Larry Drew said. “Certainly, this schedule is very abnormal.”

RIP Joe Pa:
Any person employed by the state has a chain of command.
One is bound legally by said chain of command.
Coach Paterno, did his due diligence according to the law;
to which he was bound.
People say he was a powerful man;
I say he was a man of influence, of which
he could not use his influence in any way
to override the Penn State PD.
The right people knew the facts, all the way to the top.
Not only that, the people in charge of protecting children,
knew the whole story for at least ten years.
Coach Paterno: became aware one day,
then proceeded properly the next;
he followed protocol.
Coach Paterno was a football Coach for over 40 years.
We all should be so strong of character as to live our lives,
both professionally and privately for 40; nay I say 85 years,
as Joe Paterno did as a coach and as a man.
He was a bastion for integrity, honesty, and respect.
This great man was first class and everyone knows it.
To me the great shame is; for the want of news and ratings
over the shortest of periods; news & entertainment organizations
over their daily cycle leapt upon the largest name.
Yes I said news & entertainment !
Those entertainment shows rode the story
until Penn State, feeling unnerved and intimidated,
needing a scapegoat, caved and fired Joe Pa.
Thus, bringing a great man down.
It broke his heart.
His legacy should read:

When the hearts and souls of the children in his life was placed in his hand for safe guarding, Joe Paterno looked the other way and did nothing while homosexuality raped and sodomized the innocent children breaking their hearts and ruining their lives.
“The man who’d made “Success With Honor” his credo was handed a loaded choice: Do I speak up, knowing full well that speaking up will stain a program I’ve spent more than a half-century nurturing, or do I keep quiet and hope the storm passes?” – Mark Bradley ajc.
Joe Paterno chose to protect his legacy rather than be a man and do whats right for Gods children placed before him to lead, care for and defend.
At the end of his earthly life, Joe Paterno is no man but a coward who preached one thing and did another. A coach who demanded courage and integrity in athletes lacked those very qualities in him self.
Here Lies Joe Paterno, A coward, A hypocrite, a heartless man who failed the children of God placed in his care. With the game of souls on the line and the hearts of the children to be won or loss, Joe Paterno took a kneel and surrendered the souls of the children to the hand of the evil for torture and torment and destruction.
Here Lies Joe Paterno, No Man.

excerted from the last interview with joe pa:
One reason I suspect Paterno decided to talk with me, as opposed to another writer, was because it brought his career full circle. In 1968 a Sports Illustrated writer named Dan Jenkins went to State College to do a story on a rising coach who had turned a cow college into a national football power, yet who emphasized academics like an Ivy Leaguer. No fewer than five times, Paterno asked, “How’s your father?” I replied that my father is 82 and still typing, and didn’t like the idea of retirement either.
Back in 1968, Paterno told my father, “We’re trying to win football games; don’t misunderstand that. But I don’t want it to ruin our lives if we lose. I don’t want us ever to become the kind of place where an 8-2 season is a tragedy. Look at that day outside. It’s clear, it’s beautiful, the leaves are turning, the land is pretty, and it’s quiet. If losing a game made me miserable, I couldn’t enjoy such a day.”
Had that perspective gotten lost? Did Paterno feel that somewhere along the line, football had become too important — and somehow allowed a real tragedy to go overlooked?
“Well, I don’t think it got lost,” he said. “I just think there was a series of situations that maybe people, a little bit, maybe they neglected something, and maybe they got a little bit frustrated. Whether they had good intentions or not, you’d have to ask them.”
His record will show that he was a great, indomitable champion who amassed a record 409 victories, as well as an intelligent advocate who worked tirelessly for poor and minority athletes his whole career. It will show that he was utterly devoted to his players, regularly graduated more than 75 percent of them, and had 47 academic all-Americans. It will show that he made mistakes and omissions, one of them possibly truly costly. It will show that he mostly maintained his perspective and remained true to himself.
“He didn’t preach one thing and live a different way,” Sue said.
It will show that he was not a statue made of bronze, and that he was defined as much by what he failed to do and say, as by what he did. Which merely made him, in the end, human.

Dallas won’t trade Odom for Hinrich… they have more than enough guards and Odom’s contract is unguaranteed next year. However, Dallas would probably be THRILLED to send Haywood to the Hawks for Hinrich. They want to clear more cap space to sign two elite FAs next summer (D-Will & D12) and that trade would make that possible. Of course, the Hawks would be left with a serviceable center with a horrible contract AND will again be forced to fill out their roster with minimum salary players. So that would be a great deal for Dallas and an awful one for the Hawks.
Again, keep an eye on Brad Miller. Sund wanted him last year at the trade deadline and his skill set is comparable to Horford. Miller is a better shot-blocker (at least he was in his prime) than the average fan would realize and has a strong pick & pop game like Al. Hinrich+filler for Miller & Ridnour would work and give us quality depth at the two most important positions. And Miller’s contract next season is unguaranteed.
In a perfect world, one of the older centers would be fit enough that we could just plug them in and wouldn’t have to be concerned with contract lengths of players going out and comng in. But my guess is that Rasheed, Pryzbilla, Dampier, Gadzuric, Fesenko, etc. are no where near fit to play 20 minutes/game AND a compressed schedule.

It seems like when we lose, it is because the Hawks did something wrong, but when a team beats someone like the Heat, it is because they did something right. It kind of suggests that teams like the Heat are incapable of a bad night while teams like the Hawks are incapable of losing while playing well.

I agree that none of those guys are in game shape, which is why Rick should have signed somebody a few days after Al went down. Al got hurt on Jan. 12.
Given our brutal Feb schedule (Memphis, Philly, Phoenix, Indiana, @ Orlando, Miami, @ Lakers, @ Phoenix, @ Blazers, @ Bulls, @ Knicks, Orlando, Golden State) whoever was signed off the scrap heap would have had 2 ½ weeks to get in some kind of shape to contribute.

yeah,, but that roster has a very big hole unless they coach up ivan to fill that void. yeah it is risky but to do nothing is worse. right now there are only 6 teams to beat in the east. it is simple math as i dont expect anyone to come out of the wood work except maybe the knicks or celts to make a run at the top six. if we fall that far then we are not who we think we are or maybe who we thought we were before the present run. the two teams we dont seem to match with right now is philly and the pacers going back to last year.
i dont know if we can depend on al to come back and at some point the basg had better believe windows to the ecf are not open for long. my contention is we missed a big one woody’s last year here and not due to woody altogether when we needed a bit more fire power they better come to jesus and spend or hope we pull a phoenix of two years back to get there without going into lux tax with what we got because everything around deteriorates. they got soundly trounced for their efforts however and never were legit. that is not what i wish if we were to get there, not full of holes.

“God, Do I save my life and legacy by looking the other way, while these children are raped and sodomized by homosexuality or do I ignore my life’s work and do all I can to save these your children? It is a very difficult question for me and my soul is on fire, yes lord my soul is at stack, its torn between the soul of the children or my love for my career and university, please let me hear your council and I will decide what I shall do…”
I understand your challenge and surely these are the times that try men souls. It is that day that I have called you to answer so be careful what you choose.
Mark 35- 38 KJV
“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Luke 9:23-25
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
KJV
Matt 10:37-39
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

AJ – I was reported – “Miller (knee) has been practicing with Minnesota and will travel with the team for an upcoming two-game road trip, but won’t play in either game, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.”
If we could obtain Brad Miller in exchange for Kirk Hinrich and a couple of 2nd round picks, I would do it. I would possibly give them a first in 2013 and Hinrich.
When you have an opportunity to possibly make the ECF or beyond, and you have a limited window of opportunity; such as JJ getting older (30), Josh is a Free Agent after next season, as well as ZaZa, you have to seize the moment. A Brad Miller/ZaZa/Ivan Johnson/Collins Center position at least gives you a better opportunity at getting where you want to go – a Championship.
I would make the bold move if we are sure Miller is healthy, and Minny would do the trade. I haven’t looked at there roster – I know there stacked at PG – maybe they need another 2 in Hinrich.
Brilliant idea AJ in obtaining Miller – I had wondered about his injury and how far along he was.

Odom is a skinny power forward and Miller is antiquated. Neither will help the hawks past the second round and there is no assurance that Al will ever return to the levels that brought us 12 pts 8 rebounds.
We needed a long term fix before, as Al was the short term cure and trade bait, now that he is showing himself injury prone, we need to make a move for our long term fix now. Trade Heinrich and Al for Bynum or Jordan or amnesty Al, trade Heinrich for a 1st round pick and then go after Howard. Another possibility is get Okafor, keep Al and let him come off the bench, to see if he can regain that much sought after 12pts 8 rebounds and use Heinrich or Teague to get Okafor.

Miller for Hinrich would even bring the Hawks under Luxury Tax.
But if we did Miller for Hinrich, we would in actuality be giving 2 first picks, Mo, Bibby, Jordan Crawford (another 1st pick) for Brad Miller – and that’s bad trade(s) in anybody’s book.
But you can’t look back, just forward, and do what’s needed to try and win a Championship for this city.

AJ,
Collins and Curry had gained at least 50 pounds. Surely Sund can find someone off the scrap heap who did not gain that much weight.
Twin will get his 10 – 15 minutes of PT, but he is a liability on offense, and he doesn’t rebound the ball. His best assets don’t show up on the stat sheets, and more often than not, it is not enough. I don’t know who the ASG is trying to fool, but imo, Twin’s sole purpose on this team is for when we play Dwight.
I don’t want to have to play ZaZa 30 mpg. Plus what if ZaZa gets in foul trouble? Do we play Twin major minutes? Or do we go with Ivan at Center?
And worst case scenario, what if ZaZa gets hurt as has to miss a couple games? What then? Sund needs to be proactive (and reactive). Right now, he is being neither.
Who knows if Al will even make it back for the playoffs, and even then, what kind of shape will he be in?

Now that’s too much for Miller, agreed. But to win a championship, you do what’s needed. Or even have a better opportunity to win a championship.

I seriously doubt the Hornets trade Okafor for Hinrich and even a couple of 1st picks.
But I’m positive ASG would not take on Okafor’s salary for the long term. And their not amnestying anybody, because they still have to pay them even if the player is off the books.

Al’s return will hurt the team more than help. He will have to relearn that arm and deal with the swelling and shortened range and motion which will surely affect his game, which is average at best. His foot work and timing will also be off. Did I mention his game strength will be an issue as well.
Al is a long term project that may, or may not ever get back to the 12/8 guy. I dont think you guys understand the injury Al has/had, or the process of internal healing.
Quite simply the old Al may never be back.
Time to burst a serious move.

What’s up with Al and 12 and 8? When has Al ever averaged 12 and 8?
Not including the game he was injured in, where he only played 5 minutes, Al was averaging:
13.1 and 7.5, not 12 and 8.
His last 6 games before he was injured he averaged 14.2 and 8.3 as he was coming into form, and trying to play closer to the basket.
Last season he averaged 15.3 and 9.4. He has never averaged less than 9.3 rebounds per game in a season.
His career averages are 12.8 and 9.5.
Where does 12 and 8 come from? Even his post season averages are 11.5 and 8.7. And wasn’t he hurt in his second season during the playoffs? Because besides that second season where his playing time was down in the postseason, he’s averaged 12.6 and 10.4, 14.6 and 9.0, and 11.3 and 9.6.
So where does 12 and 8 come from? Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure. I mean if your a Josh supporter, somebody shouldn’t just skew the stats and emphasize Josh has only shot 42.6% in the postseason, and 15.9% from 3 point range, or that he only shot 40.9% in the postseason last year, and 12.5% from three point range, while Al shot 46.5% in the postseason.
At least tell the truth, and not just part of the picture. As much as this blog complains, I’m just glad we have both Josh and Al, 2 of the top 43 players in the League according to ESPN. I like them both – ain’t gotta diss the one to make the other shine – just be a Hawks fan – much easier.

Joe Mama – I agree about Al, you never know if and when the old Al comes back after that injury. But the only serious move i see us making, if any, besides a Hinrich for Boris Diaw or something, is us thinking we can’t sign Josh in Free Agency, and trading he and Hinrich or Marvin for Gasol.
But we may just try to limp thru the season and do nothing, you never know we this bunch.

Gasol is good however, I just don’t see how he’s a difference maker to get us to a championship, if you have to give up alot to obtain him..

? not that 13 pts is much better but I dont take the average of when Al had a good week and played against 3 teams with no center and calculate that to say Al is a 13pt a game center. I judge Al by his over all production and his career average has Al with 12pts and 8 rebounds. He like all players has some good days and bad days, good seasons and bad season.
I dont throw out the bad days or seasons to calculate only the good ones. Over al and by the nba career numbers Al is 12 pt 8 rb 1 blk 2 to 1 blk/a guy. Day in day out that what you get from Al.
Who are you calling a liar? NBA.com or the man you see in the mirror?
Can Al stand on his own merit? Why must Al defenders Al ways use Josh to validate Al? Let Al stand on his own merits or lack of them.

Since when does a single injury result in someone being “injury prone”?
I remember a few years ago someone suggested that trading Josh for Dirk would be foolish. Of course, that was before anyone thought Dirk could deliver a title without another superstar by his side.
Steve, I’m not sure if the T’wolves are under the cap… it seems like trading Hinrich’s $8 for Miller’s $4.7M wouldn’t work unless they do have cap room. That’s why I was previously adding a filler from us and Ridnour from them. But no way in the world would I trade a 1st round pick for Miller. He hasn’t been effective in 2 seasons. I only brought him up because Sund showed interest previously and he could easily fit into the same offensive schemes that employed Horford. But he is not likely worth a 1st round pick.
OB, I support adding a big, just saying that we need a big who can actually get on the court. If any of those guys were 2-3 weeks away, don’t you think they would have been signed by the 20+ teams who desperately need big man depth?

I dont think so. but I can say this team isnt playing better with out Al because it is and and the spirit of this team now wants to fight and win more so than fight each other in the locker room for who gets to play what position.
I think along with Josh, and JJ, you will need to add 1 more to our very own big 3. and by necessity that 3rd needs to be a center to optimized the in/out game and give us the needed interior defense.
We dont need another “big” we need a center.

AJ, Melo and Amare are both weak in the very areas that would cause Josh and Dwight to excel in this league: Defense and Rebounding. Against majority of the teams, the Hawks could run zone with Joe and Teague hawking the ball, and Josh/D12 guarding the rim, and cleaning up misses. Not to mention, LD isn’t Phil Jackson, but he isn’t Mike ‘Antoni (no D’ in his name or game). Also, Melo and Amare have BOTH missed more extended times than Josh and D12 combined.

D League is stripped bare of Bigs because of the dearth of quality Bigs in the NBA right now. Since Chris Daniels went back to Korea, the two best bigs are Marcus Lewis – 6-8 245 (about the same size as Ivan) has about the same efficiency rating as Ivan and averages 15.6 points and 14.0 rebounds shooting 55.9%.
7-0 265 Jeff Foote – a legit 7-0.25 without shoes, 265, averages 15.1 and 9.0 on 54.7% shooting – but Grandad says he’s garbage, and I trust Grandad on that one. He is young – 24, so he may become a player some day, but probably not right now in the NBA.

Ramon, as long as they weren’t both trying to block every shot, they could be good together defensively. History shows us that when two elite shot blockers come together, only one typically maintains their career average as only one is the primary help defender. On offense, they are both better served in the post, sweeping across the lane. And Josh is also super good at drawing the double team and making the nice pass out of the post. Meanwhile, 1st round picks are far too valuable to simply hand out in hopes that we can dip him in the fountain of youth. Sign Rasheed and dip him in the same fountain without having to trade any assets if we simply want to test the hot tub time machine. Oh, and TMac? Really? Pistons fired their head coach last year. Kurt Thomas? Averaging 5/5 in 20 minutes with his last 5 games. Are we sure that Twin can’t produce a whopping 5 & 5? Not to mention that Thomas has been upright for the past few years, something that can’t be said for Brad Miller. I’m guessing we could get 5 & 5 from Hilton Armstrong.
Again, I’d try to acquire him, but unlike you, I wouldn’t offer a 1st round pick just for him. I’d want more back (like Ridnour) and still wouldn’t include a 1st rounder.

“Are you sure we’re playing better without Al? We got trounced by two good teams on the road without Al, and beat 3 bad, and 1 good team.
With Al we came within an eyelash of going 4-0 against the Heat and Bulls, and we lost to a mediocre team in Houston.”-SteveW
I don’t think so. Some ppl will discount what Al brings to this team, but watching Zaza try to finish and Twin do anything other than post defense, is hard. PPL need to stop reading the BOX SCORE, Al does things that don’t show on paper….LIKE DEFENSE.
This team needs balance scoring, a “BIG” who can finish at the rim, space the floor, show on the pick-n-role and rebound.

Ramon, think you can convince either Dwight or Josh to take the same number of FGAs as Big Ben did in those championship years? Good luck. And as much as I would like to believe that D12 and Josh have the same championship and team focus as The Admiral and Duncan, for some strange reason, I can’t convince myself of that.
If you take emotion out of the equation, Howard and Horford are a far more complementary pairing than Howard and Josh. IMO, it isn’t even close.

My man, Astro Joe! Good Job, getting a decent conversation going today, re: what to do at center with feasibility in mind. I’m loving your ideas about what to do for my Hawks!
I’ve shied away the past few days, due to the troll rolling around in the gutter with some very offensive and pornographic type comments.
Without a moderator on here, the dog leash is very long. I was hoping the extra rope would hang itself – oh well.
Get Well Soon MC! This blog thread is getting very thin, frayed and is loose! LOL! Let’s Go Hawks!

AJ, I don’t think so when it comes to Horford and Howard compared to Josh and Howard. Horford hasn’t proven to be able to even guard the PF position yet. And to be honest, when you don’t have a 6th man on the team like Jamal, you can see there will be more than enough shots to go around. And for Joe, it would be less shots, but his scoring will go up, because his shots will be against single coverage or wide open. Not to mention when you have Dwight you’re immediately in the penalty anytime you drive the lane.
And I strongly believe Dwight is a championship minded player. Its not his fault that Otis Smith let go of the 2nd best player on their NBA Finals team (Hedo) right after they went to the Finals. Than tried to replace him with an aging Vince Carter. D12, Josh, Joe, and Teague would have something in common that D12 never had with anyone on his team besides M. Pietrus, and that’s the love of playing defense. Every night it would be hard for a team to score more than 92 points against the Hawks. Also, you say that Horford would work better than Josh with D12. But notice how opposing PGs always do pick and rolls with Horford getting the switch, not Josh. With Josh and Howard, what PG/SG really will want to switch defensive match ups without giving up the rock.

ummm… why do you lose time discussing with the Troll when he is simply trying to get on your nerves?
He actually makes sense from time to time, but most of the time he is simply getting at kick out of your reactions.
I have, however, to agree on the Joe Pa situation.
Joe Pa was still very much involved and sponsoring Sandusky’s “foundation”, so he simply chose to go ostrich on this matter…

AJ, also, Josh creates his own shot and shots for other more than Horford, and something that Howard isn’t good at. So Josh is a better match up. Josh is the best passer out of a double team (including Joe) that the Hawks have on the team. Everything that Horford does better than Josh (which is only a few) Josh is closer to being on that level, than Horford is to being on the level of the things Josh does better. Josh is rebounding at the same clip as Horford, now that Teague is in back court and able to get back on defense.

Ramon, if Howard were on the team, Josh wouldn’t have the ball as much. I think it would be the guards feeding him the the post with Josh on the weakside. many of the things that Josh provide today would be reduced by the presence of any elite defensive center. He is the size of a SF who has to play PF in part because he is such an incredible shotblocker and so you want him closer to the rim. I don’t think you want both Josh and Howard cheating off their man when a guard penetrates into the lane. That potentially leaves two players open for the easy drop-off shot.

_____________
OMG Estan was killing his teammates in practice, Didn’t he blow up somebody’s knee for the season? Lenny put a velvet rope around Smitty’s legs in practice.
John Edwards had “leg compartment syndrome” ala Garrison Hearst … and rode the bench the whole time. Alan Henderon was most improved one year and never seen again, except for “ridin’ ’round and gettin’ it!” In his drop top two toned tan and brown Bentley! Ed Gray … Adam Keefe … Grant Long “pump fake” master … Jimmy Jackson of the “Three Live J’s” was fighting Jason Kidd over some “hoe” who was that girl? Tyra Banks? Then she was stalking C-Webb ….. Man, the NBA was HIGH DRAMA back then! The good old days!
I went to a lot of Nique’s parties at the Westin and Marriott downtown … Birthday Bashes ….. High Top Fades … Kid ‘N Play shirts … Loud colored suits, Now & Later Gators … Stacey Adams … Just man oh man!
I’ve met Nique’ so many times and he was always so nice, normal and friendly! His family would goto the “Disco Kroger’s” on Pone De Leon and put groceries on his tab and no one paid. Nique would be on the west coast and his sisters would load the carts with: Lobster, Steaks, Wine and Beer without him knowing it! It would be in the AJC for all to know! Poor Nique’. Gerald said he changed his phone No. Weekly and told Nique to cut them off!
The players back then were so normal and accessible and they threw huge “V103 HOSTED” hotel parties every night of the week! Wed to Sun. We packed that toilet bowl called The Omni Arena man!
Anybody else remember that?

Ra’mon, that is why I think folk are all about Howard and Josh. But from all reports, Howard hasn’t included the Hawks on his magic list yet josh is still playing here. Which makes me think that he doesn’t find playing with Josh in Atlanta all that appealing (relative to other options).

AJ – You asked the question with no qualifiers, and even mentioned John Salley if I remember correctly.
And also, Bill Walton was long gone when he was with the Celtics – played well, but certainly not his HOF type numbers.
Your argument doesn’t hold water.
Neither did your antipathy that you fail to remember that you had about Jeff Teague. But that’s another story.
And about Brad Miller, I added the caveat, “if he were healthy” – so I think I covered that base.

AJ, we’re just going to agree to disagree on the topic, lol. Also, for what its worth, Josh Smith was one of the three players D12 told Smith to bring in, if he wants him to re-sign in Orlando. Also, in the half court offense, Josh is still the best facilitator for others on the team, aside from TMac. And Josh is able to take just about any PF off the dribble, and even more so now that his mid range is falling more.

I can understand the argument that Horford complements Dwight better than Josh does, but I also think Josh provides more versatility (when defending teams that are strong on the wings like Miami for example), and Josh’s passing ability would allow him to be effective on offense even if Dwight was the primary low post threat. I think there are ways to make it work with Dwight and Josh.

AJ – So you ask how many HOF’er’s are on the Hawks roster. Hmm, that’s a good question. Maybe 0 (probable), or maybe 3 marginal ones.
Joe is about to be in his 6th consecutive All Star game, barring something crazy. He’s on course to have about 20,000 points in his career, which is usually a good sign. And he’s got a good shot a 7 All Star games in a row next season. Who backs up DWade next season. DRozan? Marsh? George? Nick Young? JJ’s got a good shot barring injury for the next two All Star games at least.
Al – If he ups his game to 18 and 10, he’s only 26 next season. He’ll probably play at a high level to about 32. That’s 7 more seasons. So he’s got a shot really.
Josh – Youngest to 1,000 blocks. If he keeps improving, he’ll be kinda high up the scoring and rebounding lists also by the time he calls it a career.
So probably no HOF’ers, maybe 1. But it could be 3, you never know.

Steve, John Salley was a reference to the movie “Eddie”. I’m not sure how Teague plays into a discussion about Brad Miller and how to acquire a Horford replacement, you’ll have to explain how those things come together. And if Brad Miller returns and is so healthy and productive that he is worth a 1st round pick, wouldn’t the Wolves do better to try and move Darko? You’re right, sometime around 20 years ago, there were HOF players who came out of a state of relative unproductiveness to do some good things. Two decades+ ago. You’re right.

I threw out the name Dalembert on the boards for two seasons. Always saying the Hawks should’ve traded Jamal (at the time) for him and Garcia. If Dalembert was on the roster, the Hawks would still be in a good position to handle this injury. And they would still have Kirk on the roster, getting ready to come off the bench. The largest problem the Hawks have going forward is Marvin’s contract. Someone can say Joe makes too much. But when you look at the line up you do not think “Joe is the weak link here”. And if we had MORE production out of the 3 position, its safe to say Joe and Josh would both see less double teams than they do now. Could you imagine if the Hawks had someone like Gallinari instead of Marvin? Or even if the Hawks had Maggette (another name I said the Hawks should’ve acquired a while back). Now that Bibby has been gone over a year, and Al is injured. Its even more clearly to see that Marvin has been hurting this team for far too long! And why is it that, every time Marvin makes the news about being traded, he always find a way to get injured for 2-3 weeks? And then after the trading deadline he comes hobbling back in. Or if Marvin goes 5 games averaging 15 points, he ends up getting injured on the 6th game. Marvin is making twice the amount he should be making for his services (thank you Sund). I wonder if LAL would take Marvin for Artest.

AJ, I didn’t think he asked for Big Baby. I thought it was Josh, Monta, and someone else. The only reason he doesn’t have Atlanta listed as a top destination is A-S-G. For me, he doesn’t even have to sign an extension yet. Long as he agrees not to opt out this off season, and give the Hawks at least a full season, I say the deal is more than worth it. Because if it doesn’t work out, you still have him, Josh, and Marvin coming off of the books at the end of next year. And you’re able to amnesty Joe, then if you choose. Get to start off from scratch with a new GM. So either way, something is going to happen. And you know THIS way, you’ll make a lot of money from ticket sales and merchandising throughout the next year and a half.
