Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

C-Viv reporting from Philips Arena.

Hawks coach Larry Drew did not use the word “quit” again to describe the Hawks’ performance Friday night at the 76ers. However, the coach did not back off his post-game comments.

Drew would not single any particular player out. He also said he has not address the team following his post-game comments.

Here are some quotes from Drew during his pre-game interview:

“I’m not going to call out any names. It got a little tough and we didn’t respond. We did not respond.”

“Yes [he stands by his post-game comments], I went back and watched it. We had a good first half. They made a run in the third quarter and, as stated, we didn’t respond to it, which is very disappointing. I’ve made statements in the past, I really thought we had turned that corner a little bit in that situation. Teams are going to make runs. Good teams are going to make runs.  Philadelphia is a really good team. They played very well. We talked about it at halftime, that that team was going to make a run. We couldn’t fold the tent when they did. We had to mentally be strong and push our way through it when they did. That was not the response we got when they made the run.”

“What I said last night after the game is done. It’s time to move on.”

“Shot selection [was the reason for the poor second half]. Bad shot selection against a team as good as Philadelphia. Bad shot selection is just as good as turnovers. That’s what gets the team going… For a half we played and followed our game plan. Then we came out in the third quarter and completely lost focus of what got us the lead in the first half.”

“Certainly having a key guy like Al [Horford] that can bring some stability in a situation like that. He’s been the type of guy that would get guys to settle down and was vocal in the huddles. Those are the type of situations where you can use a guy like that because his presence along, being on the floor and being in the huddle, is definitely felt.”

“I think it’s everybody’s responsibility, mine included, when you get in those situations you have to be very aware of the flow of the game. Players on the floor have to be aware of the situation. Certainly our guys felt the momentum shift in that third quarter yesterday. And yet, we continue to be seduced into taking ill-advised shots. I just thought we had turned the corner from that. That was the disappointing part. We will bounce back from it. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not a situation where we are going to cave in. We are going to learn from last night’s game and we are going to continue to try to get better and better.”

Here are a couple comments from Jerry Stackhouse, the 16-year NBA veteran:

“Hopefully we respond positively. It’s one game. In a long NBA season you are going to have nights like that. But it was a little disappointing to see with almost four minutes left in the game, a 12-point game, we called off the dogs so to speak. But I guess from being around this group [coach Larry Drew] sensed something he’s seen before. Hopefully we can get past that. We’ve talked about growth a lot with this group. Maybe the message after the game and the fact we have a game right back today, we can come back and make amends for not finishing the game the way we should have.”

“It’s on the individual. When you are dealing with a team you’ve got to know which players to push and which players to coddle. The guys that need coddling might be affected differently. We hope not. Hopefully everybody looks at it for what it was. I think his comments were spot on. Now it’s just a matter of responding. More so than what he said last night, he’s looking for a response. Hopefully we can give the proper response tonight.”

Good bounce back win for the Hawks.

maybe that will restore a little hope in some people. Even Smith had a good game, despite him shooting poorly tonight.

joe pa gone. hmm, i have seen it before where when a man losses his purpose he fades fast. he deserved better than the way he was treated. good article in the washington post recently with him. he sadly was very naive in his thinking and a very narrow old school perspective as well to think others would take care of things that held such a price on doing the right thing. he was almost military in his approach to things that you let the superiors do what they should and not question it. anyway, he had his issues, as we all do, but for the most part his legacy should not include the man who fooled a lot of people that should have figured it out besides a very narrow focused, obsessed football coach.

here is the post, you can sign up to receive this very good paper as well for free to get past the first page:

and one more time just go ahesad and give ivan time as you would al and be done with it. he need the experience now to get him ready for the off season. is he as ggod as al, well no. he will be a far sight better than twin in most sitruations and wont embarrass us too much. yes he is undersized but given the right treatment he will do fine. let him share duties with vlad, zaza, josh and get on with it. soem nights he will be beat bad but al has had his moments as has josh. tired of this twin sh!t. get dampier or the equivalent as he can rebound better and score as well as take up space which is all they want from twin.

Doc I agree.

Ivan needs the minutes behind Zaza. No sense even playing around with his minutes anymore. The dude may be undersized, but he plays and ACTS like he’s a bigger player. He’s an active body around the rim and he has a decent arsenal of offensive moves. And while he may not can guard the bigger post players around the rim, he can defend the post players who like to face up and put the ball on the floor.

Stop playing with Ivan, coach. Just give that man consistent minutes.

This from AP concerning Kirk and Al’s injury return timelines:

“ATLANTA — Hawks guard Kirk Hinrich, who has missed the first 17 games of the season while recovering from left shoulder surgery, said Saturday he hopes to play during Atlanta’s upcoming five-game trip.

Hinrich started in 22 of his 24 games with Atlanta last season after he was traded to the Hawks from Washington. He averaged 10.2 points and 4.0 assists overall.

Hinrich had surgery in November and he is trying to beat his projected recovery time of three to four months. He said before Saturday night’s game against Cleveland he will be with the Hawks on their road trip which begins Monday at Milwaukee.

“I hope I’ll be playing sometime on this trip,” he said.

Jeff Teague has taken over as Atlanta’s starting point guard.

Meanwhile, Dr. Xavier Duralde, who performed the surgery this week to repair center Al Horford’s torn left pectoral muscle, said Saturday the All-Star is progressing well in his recovery.

Horford was injured going for a rebound in a Jan. 11 game at Indiana. He is expected to be out three to four months and could miss the remainder of the regular season.

Duralde checked Horford on Saturday and said the center can begin strengthening work in six weeks.

Duralde said the incision is in Horford’s left arm pit.”

So Al cannot even begin strength exercises until the 1st week of March – he may be back the middle of April, we’ll see.

But Kirk is planning on playing on this road trip. Interesting

I still think you cut Stack when Hinrich gets back – Pargo’s been playing pretty good. Or we may not cut anyone, and just pay the Luxury Tax. This is ASG we’re talking about however.

Maybe even cut Stack and Sloan.

I still wish we had 1 more big guy – but Hoopsworld is reporting we are shopping Hinrich for a Big. Don’t know what you get for his 8 mill. expiring.

northcyde, his hands are huge and quick and take up passing lanes. his feet are quick and he takes space away from anyone who waits. he did get burned by a quick post move the other night in the portland game but not anymore than twin would have for gosh sakes. he will also learn how to play those moves if allowed to play. i cant stand it when LD is so short sighted. it isnt as though the guy plays like solo or something.

Trade Hinrich what a joke. At this time what team in their right mind would even trade for him aft surgery and yet to play this year. The goal is to get as much help in this shortened season as possible. If Za Za would ever DUNK he might not win the miss a layup contest against Marvin every night. Hinrich is tough when healthy and an asset to the team.

Al wont make it back this year. being in physical shape is not the same as being in player shape. and it will take a while to sync with the team. Al will have to earn his position back if hes not traded or amnestied. His arm wont have full rotation right away. He will have to learn to use it all over again.Whats more, its now a weak spot and he may hurt it again. He almost blew out an ankle a couple years back in the playoff and so Al is really very injury prone.

Lets get rid of this guy while he still has a little value. I said that before when the Magic was interested and then got injured. Now the trade appear over and his value dropping. Please trade him before he has so many injuries that nobody will take a chance on him.

He may not make it back from this injury.

No one at the AJC cares what you say about Al. They only care that you are being lewd, and inappropriate. But when you post offensive material, then they block your IP. So all your other posts go too.

Answer is easy. Stop the foolishness, and stick to your anti-Al rants. Unless you’d rather be banned and try to wear it like a badge of honor. But everyone on the blogs knows why you are banned from time to time. Everyone but you, apparently.
