Atlanta Hawks: Sixers 90, Hawks 76

Philadelphia–Maybe after he watches the video and sleeps on it, Larry Drew will regret the choice of words. But he was unambiguous about his feelings in the immediate aftermath of his team’s second-half collapse.

  • Asked what happened in the third quarter, Drew said: “It got tough for us in the third quarter and we quit. That’s what happened.”
  • Harsh words coming for any NBA coach, especially one with a veteran team. There were more.
  • “I am hoping it’s out of character,” Drew said. “I saw a pattern with it last year and I thought we had turned the corner with it this year. Not the fact that we lost the game, but the fact that it got tough for us and we did not respond. You could see it in our faces and see it in our body language.”
  • “Teams are going to make runs,” Drew said. “It’s how you respond to runs. You either man up or you fold the tent. Tonight we certainly folded the tent in that third quarter. What’s disappointing is we talked about when a team makes a run, you play through it. You don’t hang your heads and feel sorry for yourself, you don’t start crying to officials. You have to respond by toughening up defensively, executing your stuff even harder. I’ve seen us do it before. Tonight we didn’t do it.”
  • “There are going to be more situations like this,” Drew said. “We have got to learn how to respond. More importantly, when it gets tough for us, we can’t hang our heads. I told the guys we had won four in a row and five of our last six. There was no reason to come out and put our heads down when things get tough.”
  • I don’t know if I would go so far as to say the Hawks quit. To me, things came apart for some familiar reasons: stagnating offense, poor shot selection, carelessness with the ball and their struggles to score affecting their defensive sharpness.
  • We’ve seen all of that lately from the Hawks; it’s just that the Sixers are good enough to seize on all those lapses and turn them into a running, dunking, ball-hawking, shot-making extravaganza.
  • The Hawks were stagnant on offense and sleepy on defense. They stood around at both ends, watching Philadelphia take open jump shots and taking turns launching rushed jump shots of their own. The Sixers were off and running.
  • “They picked up the intensity and we couldn’t make a shot,” Jeff Teague said. “That combination is always going to be bad. They got some easy transition baskets.”
  • Josh Smith was chapped by Drew invoking the “q” word: “Everybody is entitled to their opinion. If he felt that way, that’s his opinion. I just felt we got a little careless with the basketball. In times of adversity, everybody has to stick together. Everybody. Players and everybody, and keep everything positive. The slightest thing can deter a situation or an individual.”
  • Teague also rejected the characterization: “I don’t think nobody out there is trying to quit. They just made good plays. We don’t have no quitters on this team.”
  • Joe Johnson looked lethargic for most of the night (though surely long-limb menace Andre Iguodala had something to do with that). Deadlines prevented me from sticking around to get Joe’s perspective.
  • He tried to go Iso-Joe a few times with poor results. Then again, it was Iso-Everybody in the second half. Josh, Teague, Jannero Pargo, and Tracy McGrady also took turns trying to get it rolling on their own instead of sharing the ball like they did in the first half.
  • This was Josh’s worst game in a while. He was missing jumpers and had just six rebounds on a night the Hawks got pounded 51-32 on the boards. Josh did have a good game passing the ball. All four of his assists led to layups.
  • Teague was very good in the first half (five steals, nine points on six shots, four assists), not so good in the second. He could have been more aggressive when things came unraveled in the third quarter. Only once in the second half did he get into the lane to draw a foul.
  • It was the same pattern for T-Mac, who just didn’t have the same spark in the second half after he abused Evan Turner in the first half. The Hawks should run that pick-and-roll with him and Zaza Pachulia all the time. It almost always results in a score or free throws for Zaza or a short shot attempt by T-Mac.
  • Zaza was around the ball often when it came off the glass but frequently was beat to the spot.
  • Marvin Williams missed open Js and never stopped settling for them. He’s usually reliable with getting to the line when the offense stagnates but not tonight.
  • For long stretches Willie Green was the only thing working the Hawks on offense. Most nights the Hawks sort of figure out a way to get something out of the Green/Pargo combination.
  • I suppose Drew has to play Jason Collins on a semi-regular basis as long as there are only two centers on the roster but 19 minutes is beyond pushing it. During that time, Collins had two rebounds, ended up in a few bad switches and was painfully ineffective on close-outs.
  • Thaddeus Young ended up with 20 points and I don’t even really remember him doing anything special.
  • The Sixers are good, especially when they can get the tempo to their liking. They missed a lot of open 3s in the third quarter or things could have been even uglier for the Hawks.
  • “That was an incredible second half for our guys,” Doug Collins said. “The activity level defensively was off the charts. Everything we did tonight was triggered off our defense.”

I also think Coach Drew’s rotation on a game to game basis has no rhyme or reason. There is no reason that Vlad shouldn’t get in the game at all (previous game) or that Ivan Johnson shouldn’t play until the game is a blowout (like tonight) . . .

The coach is suppose to respond and tell the players what to do in that situation.

Collins + Zaza: 39 minutes, 4/5, 1/1 FTs, 9 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 3 turnovers, 0 blk. That is the center position for the Hawks right now.

Kirk to the Lakers into their trade exception. Pick from the Lakers to a 3rd team. Big man from a 3rd team to the Hawks. It works in the trade machine for pretty much every big man I tried.

Kirk + Zaza for Kaman
Kirk for Jason Thompson
Kirk for Ronny Turiaf + Jordan Crawford

And for the “Zaza should play more minutes” crowd, Collins and Zaza split those 39 minutes pretty much evenly, and Collins accounted for about half those stats. So it’s not like Zaza did sh-t either. Oh yeah, and Collins was only -3 while Zaza was -11 and letting the Sixers get offensive rebounds on pretty much every possession in the second half of the 3rd quarter.

Wow, Drew surprised me with those comments. Did Drew quit? Why didn’t Drew go with a zone defense in the 3rd to deter the Sixers from pulling away? Or why didn’t he play Ivan Johnson more if he saw energy was a problem? I didn’t see LD, make any adjustments.

Even know that Drew might regret what he said tomorrow but he is right, they just stop and quit tonight, besides you had them at under 40 points with 38% from the field and then let them destroy them in the second half. But in reality, they did quit, no matter what they say. They quit.

hawks quit, again, once things got a little tough. The players can say whatever they want to say, they quit tonight against philly, and this is not the first time, they simple gave up.
No leadership, no heart, no guts, no fight. I would not want to go to battle with not one of these hawks

Will, give me a break with the Barkley bullsh#t.

I did not think the Hawks quit (not that they never have). I thought they went ice cold and started getting extremely careless with the ball. It was a crap outing for everyone not named Willie Green.

I was not that impressed with the Sixers. They won, but the Hawks helped them out a ton. Sixers will be in the postseason, probably. No chance at winning a series. And, Hawks will beat them on Feb 4

Let’s gon head and get this Marvin Williams for Hasheem Thabeet and Jonny Flynn trade out there. We would be better without Marvin and they get themselves a SF. It also gets you more mins for T-Mac, Vlad, and Ivan, and less for Collins and Pargo. LET’S KEEP IT REAL, THE TWO BEST TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE ARE CHICAO AND MIAMI AND IN MY OPINION THE FULLY-HEALTHY HAWKS MIGHT BE THE ONLY TEAMS THAT CAN MATCHUP WITH THEM ATHLETICALLY ON THE PERIMETER. NOT SAYING THAT AS A HOMER OR ANYTHING I JUST CALL IT LIKE I SEE IT. OKC HAS NOTHING IN THE PAINT AND THE LAKERS NEED TO MAKE A MOVE IF THEY WANT TO BE A FACTOR, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, NO ONE ELSE HAS THE HORSES TO DO IT.

I don’t think they quit, I think they got beat and probably out coached. Doug Collins gets a lot out of his guys and Holiday is playing great. We definitely need to get a lot better at running our offensive under pressure, but we’re still a perimeter team, which makes getting an easy basket very hard. LD looked really fustrated and that was pretty obvious when he benched the starters with about 3 minutes left. Personnally I’m fustrated with LD for not making the obvious substitutions during Philly’s run. (Ivan for Zaza and Green for Marvin) I’m not saying it would have won the game, but at least it would have helped the match up problems. Also he’s got to work with Jeff to have a better idea of when to go over screens and when to go under. Clearly their defense calls to go over all screens but the choice should depend on the situation. Philly played great and exposed our weakeness and lack of execution under pressure.

So did the Lakers ‘quit’ last night when Miami put them away? Or did Chicago quit the other week when the Hawks beat them badly? Teams go cold. And when the coach doesn’t make ADJUSTMENTS, teams rarely get back into the game. LD could’ve tried a lineup of Teague, Joe, TMac, Vlad, and Josh for stretches at a time, to open up things, but he didn’t.

Thabeet is by far the biggest draft bust in history. He has done nothing in this league. I think the Rockets are looking to upgrade and would offload thabeet, but I dont think they will want take on Marvin’s 3 years for Thabeet’s 2 years. There’s still a chance Thabeet may develop into a Jason Collins lane clogger stiff type or Shawn Bradley, but nobody is saying he’s the next mount mutombo anymore. The 76ers plan was to double Joe and get the ball out his hands. Mission Accomplished. I agree with LD, we quit, or stopped from executing our game plan. We scored 10 points in the third and really 7 Points if it wasn’t for W. Green Shot. C’mon yall, LD knows how pu$$y this team is. We will be okay if they respond to what he is saying. He is the leader and need to call that 2nd half performance out. Its unacceptable, if your trying to compete deep in the playoffs. Habits are made in the regular season. They stopped moving the ball, settled for the jump shot. The first half we were moving the ball and shooting the open shot. BIG DIFFERENCE. LD is a hell of a coach, he did make a mistake tonight not putting in IVAN but hey, we had already given up in that third quarter and the man Just put in the media that they had to play better in the third. hawkfan it was a battle of division leaders… the Hawks only got themselves in that position with a 4-game win streak so this was news. These Hawks are still exceeding expectations and have no reason to hang their heads after one bad game against, statistically, the best team in the NBA, ON THE ROAD, against a bunch of players with ATL connections who will ALWAYS get up to play the Hawks. No reason to throw your whole squad under the bus for one loss against a good team.

7-0 265 (listed, but not that tall) Chris Daniels gets voted one of the 10 best NBA prospects in D League by scouts, and then heads to S Korea – Bye – Could have been good for the Hawks, I don’t know.

Jeff Teague may be the new Jannero Pargo when Kirk comes back, you never know with Coach LD.

Bottom line tonite – When your two Captains, your two best players, shoot 8-23, with 1 foul shot between them, and combine for 18 pts and 10 rebounds – your usually not going to beat the team that is ranked 1st in the NBA on the ESPN Rankings, especially when your playing them on the road.

Lot’s of subplots from tonite, but that’s the bottomline.

To continue,

I really don’t want Drew to take back those words at all but he need also know that he could did a lot better with rotations and TO but I think that this team needs to understand that this team window is almost up and ECF is the goal but you do not give up like this if you want to continue this march and if they don’t like it then they can ask for a trade and move on with their lives. Hawks needs to grow up and play like they can complete for a NBA title.

Always find a way to work a Teague diss into every post, don’t you? What did he do, steal your girlfriend?

Collison and Holliday don’t run their teams any better than Teague does. Helps to have teammates who are always in attack mode. Rubio, I’ll concede, has much better court vision than most point guards in the league regardless of age.

Yeah they quit:

If Josh does not like it; please tade him for a Big.

Before I start with Josh; I must make a few points.

* LD should have been brutally honest with his team.
The days of “soft soaping” it with this core are over.
LD is correct; we have all seen it before;
and rest assured we will see it again.
My message to Josh:
“I’m tired of watching you play” … “go away”

*next – LD deserves some castigation as well:
Playing Jason Collins at all. Not playing Ivan but 4 min.
Keeping Josh in the game while he shot us out of the game.
Weird, unusual and inconsistent player rotations.
[why is Jason Collins on the team ?]
That’s enough for one night on LD / this one’s not on him.

*What in blue blazes does J.Pargo think his role is …
when he enters the game ?
When he comes in that is when the offense starts to unravel,
due to the fact – he’s gonna take 3 of the next 5 shots.
*[and miss 7 of 'em] I’ve told yawl before – I’m no good at arithmatic.

* Marvin – I’ve tried; I promise I’ve tried. Really, I have.
I have made every effort to give him as many chances
as humanly possible to redeem himself.
But time after time after time ……………………………..
the young man makes me want to cry.
Please for everything that is decent and honorable in this world;
trade this fellow and do not subject me to watching him embarrass
himself on a basketball court ever again.

* Now back to Josh. (I used to like Josh)
Not so much anymore.
Josh is a dumb basketball player….. Period !
Where does everyone get off saying he has this High B-ball IQ;
I do not know ? I vehemently disagree !
Josh is a nice enough man.
But I cannot stand to watch him play the game. I’m sorry.
He also quit and to dispute his coach showed an arrogance
that proved what alot of people have and had been saying.
A good player takes what Ld said and uses it for motivation.
To get better.
He reacted much like my children used to act when scolded.
This is the 1st time I can remember
that LD has shown some nuggets in regard to his team,
without worrying about whether or not what he said
would hurt their feelings.
Enough said / I’m done for the evening.

Soft as butter tonight. LD is right this team gave up…gave up chasing, gave up fighting around picks, gave up running plays…everything! Just garbage.

But LD needs to make changes, he cant just sit there and make examples of players who don’t fight. He’s got to yank them and put in dudes who never quit like Ivan. So its on both players and coach. Why did Josh play so many minutes in the third? he was one of the main culprits.

And any sort of delusions that we could get to the end of the season with Collins and Zaza as our C is surely gone now. If they dont make a trade then this team will do nothing in the playoffs.

There’s a good possibility that we will see Cleveland imitate Philly on defense. A good plan because it is known over the league that Josh premodonna Smith will be a launching pad if they can hold down Joe. The HAWKS momentum went south in the 3rd quarter and Josh was the catalyst that soured the team, they all said wtf. He may continue. Common sense should say if you’re not hitting from the outside then go to your strength and that’s inside but that guy is all for himself and the highlight reel. I knew we would lose when he kept launching shot after bad shot. He will never be an allstar and the proof is how he plays. We may have still lost the game even if he had not be a launching pad but it would have been a better effort. How long can any team put up effort when they are being demoralized on the floor with craziness.

“Thaddeus Young ended up with 20 points and I don’t even really remember him doing anything special.”

I thought he looked pretty special out there. Everytime I watch Thad Young score in the post using his quickness, I’m amazed. As a hybrid 3/4, he doesn’t use his strength or really try to bang at all in the post, but I’m very impressed with the way he is able to score down low using quickness and skill. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else in the league today who has a quicker first step in the post than Thad Young, and his array of moves are impressive. Maybe I’m blowing it out of proportion a little bit, but I just like to watch technicians in the post, and we really don’t have any of those in today’s game anymore, other than maybe Zach Randolph. It was very interesting to me to see a guy who seems to have mastered the art of using speed to score on the block, rather than relying moreso on positioning/strength or pure finesse.

I will say this about Joe’s “legs”, he’s averaged 39 minutes a game this month (12 games over 20 days). First game back on the road after a long homestand.

It’s almost just as important for this team to find another scorer, as it is to find a rebounding big man.

Our points per game are slowly dropping. Haven’t broken 93 in the last 4 games.

W. R. TERRELL, Thats the problem with Josh Smith, he does not have any common sense. His BB- IQ is off the charts(going the opposite direction) and Larry Drew cant control him.

Drew is similar to Woodson when it comes to yanking players, like Woody he lets Josh continue to be the brat of the team. Not that im putting it all on Josh, but he is one of the culprits.

Josh Smith fans may disagree but the All-Star votes dont lie. And Sund and company are fooling themselves if they think they can win without a big man. The Hawks offense is slowing down as the season wears on.

In our past 4 games, we’ve seen our FGA’s drop to 78, 71, 71 & 74. Our season average is down to 80, which is 13th in the league. When you are already a very avg team in FG% (15th in the league at 44%), you can’t stand to lose shot attempts.

Our FTA’s have increased over the last 4 games (until last night) with 27, 31, 27 & then 8 last night (our season average is 24, for 13th in the league).

The good offensive teams are maintaining 80 FGA’s, while still going to the line 25-28 times per game.

I don’t think the Hawks’ pace has slowed, but rather we’ve seen a decrease in offensive rebounding (14, 6, 5 & 3 in the last 4 games) & an increase in turnovers (19, 10, 14 & 15 in the last 4 games). All 30 teams in the league fall between 8-15 offensive rebounds & 12-17 turnovers per game.

Hawks also becoming very average at the hustle plays on defense: blocks (17th in league), steals (14th in league), and forcing turnovers (12th in league).

Coach ‘em up LD.

Ok, all jokes aside: how many times do we have to watch “Ground Hog Day”, before we know the outcome?

Let Teague play PG so he can est. a rhythm!
Let Teague run the offense through the post player, regardless of outcome. Play inside out, that’s fundamental coaching.

Make Josh run the wings like “Ooga-dollar” every single time.

Josh and Marvin come off curls and just shoot the damn ball, no dribbling please.

Gang rebound, that means 5 guys crashing the boards, up and over the back of each other, I don’t care if it’s your own guy, never assume a teammate will rebound.

Run like a pack of wolves and foam at the mouth on defense.

Tim Duncan started the fourth quarter of Friday’s game against the Sacramento Kings at the AT&T Center on the bench, watching a Spurs’ lineup that included four reserves whittle away at the lead the Kings had held since the first minute of the game.

He stayed there until the final 5.5 seconds of what became an 88-86 loss, the Spurs’ first at home this season.

Coach Gregg Popovich said it had nothing to do with managing the minutes of his oldest player in a compressed schedule.

Well, no matter how much you talk about it, eventually the guys have to come out and take it to the other team. Did that 8 point lead feel easy to our guys? I think so.
But they were still in the game headed to the 4th, and should have shut down Philly’s momentum from there.
All you can say is there was not a game played this year, where 2 halves were so different.

“But DHoward is coming and we’ve got to get hime ready…” – Tyger

I have breaking news. Did anybody watch the Lakers-Orlando game? I just watched a replay on ESPN3. The whole idea of Jason Collins being able to guard Dwight Howard was predicated on Howard having no face-the-basket game. Guess what? He looked like The Dream out there. He’s right handed but I saw him make left handed running jump hooks, a left handed finger roll and a left handed layup off glass. He can face the basket and go either way, Jeff Van Gundy commented about how much more accurate his passing is and his free throw shooting looks better.

Jason Collins, you may now retire.

I think some of you are getting carried away with your reaction to Coach Drew’s comments. Several times this season he has been upset with the Hawks lack of energy/effort coming out of the half. So, I think he has just had enough. Last night put him over the edge and he blasted the team in the press. And, as any long time watcher of this team can attest, the Hawks have had problems with effort over the years. This team is not going to win any inspiration awards anytime soon.

I don’t think the Hawks quit last night, but they have not earned the benefit of the doubt. Effort is always in question with this group. So, LD has a point in bashing them.

Besides, I’m betting most of you would not even be talking about LD’s comments had Michael not opened the blog talking about them. As all the “as Barkley said…” posts prove, original thought is not a thing in huge supply among many who post here.

The players may not have QUIT but there was no energy or effort in the third. Just one example was Elton Brand taking two offensive rebounds from 3 Hawks who never appeared to leave their feet. A little heart would be nice – that leads to effort.

In defense of the players, this schedule is nonsense and the playoffs may be decided by the bench since teams will have many injured starters.

Thad Young is a dynamic tweener – Doug Collins finds a way to maximize his skills.

All we do is complain about our tweeners.

And hey, Josh has had 2 bad games out of 10, I’ll take that. If he averages 20 and 10 eight out of 10 games, I’m fine with that.

We still need a C. Don’t know who. Rotoworld says Hinrich is available in trade. Also says he should be back at the end of the month. Or mid-Feb. at the latest

Funny to see people on here loving LD. The only reason yall love him is because he is good at coaching the defense and that is it. He has know idea how to rotate, even though he talks like he is the master if rotation. He has know clue when to sit people because they are doing terrible, some games I seen Mavin or Teague doing good but for some reason they both were the first to get benched. He has no clue how to play the offense to benefit with each player. Collins did look good off the stats at first but he got tired and that is when LD should have brought Ivan in. It will not surprise me if LD benches Teague, when Kirk comes back, just to make him feel better. Instead of actually coaching his players he has to have Barkley coach them through the TNT commentary.

Just one loss. Cant win em all. Btw, you guys act as if you dont expect these kinds of games from the Hawks. lol. I expect us to be 12-5 after tonight. Not too shabby. Btw, we need to be trying to package Kirk/Marvin/2nd rdr for a big man. Collins is doing all he can(which isnt bad, considering he’s Jason Collins), but it just isnt enough. And Zaza. Well,………………….. he’s Zaza. Does what he does. Rebounds pretty good, plays with a little heart, moving screens galore, cant catch a pass to save his life, etc…….. Gotta get another big in here. Got the pieces to do it. Get r done Sund.

terrell,

I do agree with you it’s just a loss but it is another embarrassing loss. If I’m correct out of our 5 losses all of them were really embassing, they were very easily winnable. Rockets game, remember the starter doing bad but then the bench brings it close then the 2nd half, LD decides to bring in the starters. The Bulls, We held them down for 3 quarters and it looked like we were going to win, guess they didn’t want the win. Heat, we can beat them with Lebron/Wade but not without, nothing more to say. Sixers and Pacers we gave up in the 2nd Half.

One kid that might be available at the right price is Jordan Hill in Houston.

Hill’s draft measurements were 6′9.25″ w/o shoes, 7′1.5″ wingspan, and 9′0″ standing reach, so he’s taller than Al, but not too big that he’s not still athletic. He’s a little thin, but he’s putting up 5 pts, 5 rebs, and 1 block in 16 minutes a night.

yes to gdad.

the last time i remember seeing our guys play the sixers in person they were tossed around like seeds in the wind at the phillips and roundly defeated in philly, though it was during our quit period at the end of the season. the bottom line is philly is better than we are and have been since mid-season last year. we showed we can only keep up a half against them until they over power us with hawes out no less.

i still have my eyebrows though i thought about half time i might have to answer to astro from an earlier comment i made in anticipation of this game. when LD refused to make a time out to make an adjustment and let josh shoot jumper after jumper in the third quarter i knew they were safe.

yes, the team quit because LD forgot to manage the team and the guys said silently to themselves roll it up til tomorrow night and maybe josh will have come down to earth again, jj find his worn out legs and teague begin to penetrate the lane and find some easy foul shots. 11 and 5 not bad with wins over the heat and bulls on the resume. realistically, they should not be worse than 6 and 7 with the easy sched but february breaks soon and it could be a long month for hawks fans. then is when we will find out if there is fight or quit in this team.

i really think LD was saying the team quit doing the things that could bring home a win which is all the bloggers were saying during the game. only problem is LD was part of the problem rather than solution.

One of the bloggers mention Avin as a player on here, did they mean Ivan? This team doesn’t play to their strengths, wich is putting the ball in Teague hands and let him push the ball up court but nooooooooo, we walk the ball up with Teague giving the ball to JJ who dribbles and dribbles until the shot clock is down to three seconds left and JJ has to do a fall away jumper or Josh(PG wanna be) dribbles slowly up the court and then throws a bad pass turning the ball over. LD, Teague is your PG and the ball should be in his hands, not JJ or Josh. Marvin should be sit down and play Ivan and Rad more minutes. Let Ivan start tonight and keep Marvin on the bench. He is killing this team. Let him sit on that large backside of his and watch how other perform. Maybe this will make a light bulb go off in his head of what he is NOT doing. I mention on yesterday’s blog how Marvin shot is blocked more than any other player in the NBA as it has been mention on this blog but other fans. T Mac looked horrible last(maybe it was the four games played). Until LD tell these wanna be PG let the true PG run the team on offense. I’m still not sold on Prago as JT back up. He just haven’t shown me he is the person to be JT back up. Maybe Sloan should be tried as the back up to JT. LD tell JT to attach the basket. and if the defense collaspe on him to dish the ball. This team shoot free throws horrible and maybe Mark Price should be brought in to help the team to improve on % made from the charity line. Josh get out and run the court when your team has the ball from a defensive rebound. Work in the paint and don’t let the opposing team lure you int shotting those 15 foot jump shots. Put the ball on the floor and either drive to the basket or kick the ball out to a teammate. JJ move without the ball and stop asting like you are older that you are. Don’t just stand around looking but MOVE JJ. Hawks please concentrate on that first free throw to make it and then hit the second one. Do better with the free throws and that will help your PPG average. Lastly but not lease, STEP UP AND SHOW THE FANS THAT THIS TEAM WILL PLAY TEAM BALL AN D DO ALL THE LITTLE THINGS TO WIN. As Grandad states on here…………………BOX OUT……………….BOX OUT as my old coach use to say………Rebounding “Put a body on somebody” and this includes the defender guarding the shooters……….by boxing the shooter out, you keep him from running in and getting an offensive rebound.

My Wishlist depending on how things go this season if it ends badly a.k.a another 2nd round sweep.

I want 4 people out of here Al, Josh, Marvin, and Joe(gets amnestied). Give Al to someone like the Nets and get us some draft picks.

If you can give Josh to Orlando so him and Dwight have what they want. Marvin and Joe can take a hike for all I care.

As for the rest of the team keep everyone except Collins(worthless)

We need to rebuild through free-agency or the draft(choosing the latter). We need people that will listen to the head coach oh yeah almost forget FIRE ASKG, and FIRE LD as well get us a real ownership and a real head coach not one that’s in training.

Every team loses games.
It is the way a team loses that is disconcerting.
The Hawks invented the design for last evening’s loss.
That is why LD was quoted:
‘`I’ve seen this before”.

Do not use the word ‘`hate” / I do not hate Josh Smith.
I am tired of his schtick and I do not enjoy watching him play anymore.
Once upon a time Josh would make Rodman-esque plays;
chasing down fast breaks & blocking shots, and the like.
He is doing that less and less.
The fact remains, I do not hate Josh; although I have become jaded.

I find it funny that Josh Smith made those comments, when you could clearly tell he quit last night in the fourth quarter by his body language. It’s not LD’s fault that they did not drive to the dang basket, and settled for stupid perimeter shots — looking at you Josh ‘Brick’. Hawks players always want to blame everyone else, but themselves. Did LD make mistakes? Yes. He should have put in Ivan Johnson for the defensive intensity, and leave green in, ’cause that guy was on fire. Yet, the game was clearly winnable, and that team folded like cheap lawn chairs.

I didn’t see the game last night but judging from the comments I read from some of the players. It seems that Josh Smith is the main culprit for what LD describes as ” quiting on the team “. Maybe all the ” Allstar” talk has gone to his head perhaps? I’ve watched enough of the Hawks that I think one of their main issues is that LD needs to create and insert some more ” fluid” offensive sets or guys need to start ” breaking plays ” because I’m sure his offensive sets doesn’t call for Josh Smith to be bringing the ball down the court and taking the first shot he thinks is open. Whatever happened to having the ball move all aorund from side to side or making sure the ball passes thru the hands of all 3 players instead of it going from Teague to Joe/Josh – to a shot ? And lets keep it real when people talk about ” veteran presence ” guys only listed to veterans who have done something in this league on a big time stage – Tracy is the only guy who the Hawks have who can chip in his 2 cents about something – nobody is listening to Willie Greeen, Pargo or Stackhouse, the latter because he hasn’t been relevan in 10 yrs. I would like to see LD run more plays for Tracy or put the ball more in his hands and let him run the offense because the team seems to work more in a flow when he’s out on the court. I’m constantly seeing Tracy point to where guys need to be on the floor and he has the highest Basketbal IQ on this team because he’s seen and played against just about every defesive scheme that a team can play. I know LD wants to keep him rested and fresh for the playoffs but at some point they need to give him a lil bit more freedom on offense and let him play his game.

Watched last nights game again:
1) HAWKS got out coached. Not that LD did a bad job, but Collins knows his personnel better and gets more out of them on both ends of the floor.
2) Better execution by Philly. The HAWKS had a sequence that they basically turned the ball over on three straight possessions. That’s unacceptable for a good team.
3) Rebounding!! 15 to 3 on offensive boards! Needed to see more Ivan!

Clearly the execution can be corrected but it will take some time. Tonight is another opportunity to get better.

This is the Hawks first 11 shots in the 3rd quarter.

10:56 – Josh misses 25-foot three point jumper
10:30 – Josh misses 16 foot jumper
10:02 – JJ misses 29 foot three point jumper
9:48 – Josh Smith dunks
9:13 – Josh misses 16 foot jumper.
8:52 – Joe Johnson makes 19-foot two point shot
7:41 – Joe Johnson misses 15-foot jumper
6:54 – Josh Smith misses 8-foot jumper
6:37 – Marvin Williams misses jumper
6:13 – Jeff Teague misses 25-foot three point jumper
5:43 – Josh Smith misses 21-foot jumper

As bad as the team is, LD did not do a good job coaching. He did not take a timeout until 5:31. So he sat there and saw 11 bad shots before he takes a timeout?

And he did not sub for Marvin and Twin until the timout was called. Really? Terrible coaching in my opinion.

And the first shot after the timeout? Jeff Teague misses 26-foot three point jumper.

O'Brien

January 21st, 2012

If I was LD, I would have called a timeout after Josh missed his 3rd jumper of the quarter at 9:13. And at that point, I would put Ivan, T-Mac and ZaZa in the game, and bench Josh, Twin, and Marvin.

LD did not cost us the game, but I think a good coach is able to push the right button when his team is struggling. LD did not. Terrible coaching, and terrible execution by the players.

O’Brien, great read on the key sequence in the game. We never posted Brand or got Josh in a face-up against Vucevic. Meeks was covering Marvin for that sequence also, which should have been recognized early in the shot clock and taken advantage of. We have to be a much more consistent and smarter team. The coaches have to help also. Clearly Ivan should have been in the game for Collins to try and get some offensive boards.
