Atlanta Hawks at Sixers: Game thread
6:52 pm January 20, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Philadelphia–The Hawks are using the “big” lineup with Jason Collins at center. Larry Drew said that before Spencer Hawes (Achilles) so it could change before tip off.
- Then again, maybe it won’t change since the “big” lineup apparently has become the standard lineup. “That’s the regular lineup,” Drew said. “For right now that will be pretty much how we go. That was basically the lineup last year when we went bigger. Right now that will be the starting lineup.”
- Why does Drew like that lineup? “With Jason, we really are able to play a lot more at home in the post, particularly against big guys who do have a strong low-post presence,” Drew said. “We play them head up. He gives us a little bit more size, a little bit more physicality at that position. Jason, he is a smart pro. He knows how to play his position. He does a good job playing individual and team defense. We all know with him in the lineup it’s defense-first with him. ”
- Drew on the fluctuating minutes for his reserves: “That is something I do have to manage. Given what our schedule is, guys are going to be in a situation where maybe one night they play more than others. One thing I don’t want to do is wear guys out given what our schedule is. [Vladimir Radmanaovic] hasn’t played a lot the last couple games, I’ve spoken with him, and that could be a plus for him now with this stretch coming up he will be a little bit more rested. Minutes will vary particularly with the way our schedule is. ”
- Vlad Rad: “It all depends on how you look at it. Knowing that we have such a compressed schedule, it can be a positive thing if you look at it that way. But we are all competitors here. We like to be on the court and contribute but obviously not everybody can play. It is up to the coaches to make decisions. We have to fit in that system.”
- Vlad Rad on players preferring consistency in playing time and roles: “It’s easier when you know when you are going to play and how long you are going to play. When you have certain pattern, it’s easier to prepare. You just sometimes have to deal with different things. Fortunately for me I’ve been in different situations through the course of my game. I know how to deal with it and take positive things out of it.”
- Drew on how he decides who finishes games: “I look at the matchups. If we have a group that is in a rhythm I will try to ride that, but I look at the matchups and how the game is flowing. We are a team that, at times, we get stagnant with the starters and the reserves. What I’ve tried to focus on a lot more is focus on matchups that are in there in the fourth quarter just to make sure we don’t leave ourselves open to where they have an advantage on us. We have to make sure start of fourth quarter we get off to a good start.”
- Drew on All-Star consideration for Josh Smith: “I can’t see why he wouldn’t be. He’s impacting both ends of the floor. His numbers are up offensively but defensively he’s done a good job guarding bigs and guarding smalls. He is playing with a high energy. The level he’s playing, he should be considered as an All-Star. His discipline he’s shown over the summer with losing the weight, you can see his energy level has gone up since losing that weight.”
- Tracy McGrady left the Blazers game because of cramping. He’s good to go tonight. Drew on T-Mac’s impact: “You put him in his sweet spot, he can still make plays. He’s a phenomenal passer and still with his length he causes problem. We have been trying to use him in different places on the floor, put the ball in his hands and take advantage of the matchup problems teams have against him because of his size.”

I have not watched the Sixers all year. Looking forward to this one tonight. Philly is starting to get attention from national media. Just listened to Tim Legler talk about Philly as a playoff lock that could make noise. He said nothing about the Hawks, of course.
Seems like Philly has always been a tough game for us. Tonight no different.

WELCOME HAWKS FANS, YOU ARE FACING A FAR MORE BETTER CLUB TONIGHT, I WILL BE DISSAPOINTED IF I DONT HAVE A TRIPLE/DOUBLE BY END OF 3RD QUARTER, 76ERS 6-1 AT HOME A VERY TOUGH LOSS AGAINST DENVER IN OT, SO WE SOULD BE VERY EXPLOSIVE 76ERS 112 HAWKS 91 IN A ROMP!!!!!!!!!!

This is just another game. Win or lose, the Hawks will play another one soon enough and win or lose, they need to put the 76ers game behind them and be ready for the next opponent. At this point, I’m hoping that they come out of every game with good or better health. Blowouts that allow the starters to rest would be ideal, but that is highly unlikely tonight.
GO HAWKS and bring me home an authentic cheesesteak!

Big test #2 for the Hawks after the Horford injury. They passed test #1, but this being a road game against a better team (at least according to most if not all power rankings) it is a tougher test.
I still have bad memories of that blowout loss against the Sixers last year — in my opinion the worst game of the entire season — so I hope the Hawks can get some revenge tonight.
Stop dribble penetration, make the Sixers make the extra pass, and zone them up since they only have one shooter.
On another note, always good to see ATLiens in the NBA, and the Sixers have plenty of them.

Playing lock out defense can take you away from your offensive game but if thats what the team needs you to do thats what you should be doing.

LOL @ northcyde defending Marvin.
We all know you love reading stats all day, but the per 36 doesn’t mean much to me. I’m sure Ivan (a 27 YEAR OLD ROOKIE) has extremely similar numbers per 36 minutes as Marvin does.
This is how I sum up Marvin::
Can he jump up and land without falling? NO
Can he absorb contact and not fall? NO
Can he UTILIIZE MISMATCHES (Ridnour, Korver)? NO
Does he want to utilize mismatches? NO
Is he shot great? NO
Can he stay healthy? NO
Can he make a layup/dunk at the rim? NO
Can he drive to the basket without falling? NO
Is he a bust? YES
Does he have the longest wingspan on the team, is the tallest starter, yet plays the smallest? YES

No idea why Lou Williams didn’t just jump into Vlad (or why Vlad was on the floor for a defensive possession in the first place). Kenny Smith was skewering Marco Belinelli on Inside the NBA last night for the same thing. If you pump fake and get your guy in the air, why not jump in to him?

I have a hard time blaming this on LD. This happened because the starters came out of the locker room with no energy. Maybe LD gave them the cancer/AIDS/genocide speech like Woody in the locker room, but you can’t go out there and hustle for your players.
I do think he f-cked up by not calling a time out before losing the lead and by not running post plays for Josh when he started getting jump shot happy, but he can’t inject energy into the players’ veins.

You know, if any Hawks owner, front office person, player or coach wonders why the fans simply cannot buy in to this team – just look at the 3rd quarter as a microcosm.
Drew doesn’t have the balls to bench Josh despite brick after brick after brick. The team plays ZERO defense and 90% of the quarters posessions end in either a turnover, a bad shot or a missed wide open shot.
Seriously, I was planning on going to the game Saturday, but after that disaster of watching a heartless, gutless, nadless, talentless, hustleless group of overpaid prima donnas sleep walk thru the 3rd and hand away a game they had – forget it. They haven’t earned my money.

This is how I sum up Marvin::
Can he jump up and land without falling? NO
Can he absorb contact and not fall? NO
Can he UTILIIZE MISMATCHES (Ridnour, Korver)? NO
Does he want to utilize mismatches? NO
Is his shot great? NO
Can he stay healthy? NO
Can he make a layup/dunk at the rim? NO
Can he drive to the basket without falling? NO
Is he a bust? YES
Does he have the longest wingspan on the team, is the tallest starter, yet plays the smallest? YES

Really bad second half, they lost the lead so quick that I almost missed it. During that 3rd quarter run Philly’s defensive forced everything to the perimeter and we gave up posting up Josh! These guys should learn a lot from this loss because the exact thing they needed to work on happened again. Teams make adjustments to LD offensive after half time and the HAWKS don’t adjust to how they are being played. Marvin played like garbage, which can’t be denied and Josh took to many jumpers. Right now, I personally don’t care to much about wins and losses, just that we make the playoffs. So I’m not that upset from this loss just frustrated that we can do a lot better.

Drew simply needs to stop playing Collins if he’s not guarding a player in which the offense flows through his low post play. Collins is NOT going to grab defensive or offensive rebounds. He’s not going to block any shots. He did make 2 lay-ups today, so that was a Christmas present.
But from an overall standpoint, he just shouldn’t play in these types of games. We’d be better off going with Zaza as the starter, and let Ivan start at the 5 off the bench.
Until we get another serviceable big, Collins shouldn’t just be automatically thrown out there to play.

Ivan basically getting a dnp is odd. He is the perfect matchup with Brand considering the roster.
Marvin is the main culprit for slow 3rd quarters and overall period. This is a guy that needed to jump rope during halftime a couple of years back. It takes him way too long to get his energy level up.
The team speed of the Sixers is too great for Zaza, had his head spinning at times. His minutes needed to be limited.

If a sports team offers up a sh-tty product, they can’t whine that nobody comes there to watch and everyone prefers other establishments.
I don’t think the Hawks are sh-tty, but the minute you think they are taking a step forward they play a game like this to show that nothing has changed. You can’t blame average fans for choosing not to buy tickets to see that product.

Larry is going to have to do a better job of understanding his personnel, which sometimes he does other times he doesn’t. Clearly Ivan should have been on Brand for significant stretches during the game because Josh struggles against him. We got killed on the boards and that’s what Ivan does best. JeJe . . that’s my point about Collins.
He was ONLY a factor in that series because his specialty is to guard a low post playing big man. And it’s not like he stopped Dwight, because he didn’t. He did frustrate Dwight enough to enable our other 4 guys to stay on their shooters.
Going into this game, Marvin had the highest win score per 48 minute number amongst all of the regular rotation guys ( .208 ).
Collins win score per 48 minute number?
( -0.03 )
That means that Collins is statistically a non-factor in the vast majority of the games he plays in. It’s almost impossible to post a negative win score number. But Collins manages to do it.
There’s no way that Sund and Drew can continue to count on that dude on a nightly basis. He’s a spot player at best.

Basically if the Hawks trade Kirk into the Lakers’ trade exception, they can get pretty much anyone they want from a 3rd team. As long as the Lakers are willing to throw a pick to that 3rd team — in the case of players like Turiaf, this may not even need to be a first round pick — the Hawks can pull off a trade.
Considering Kirk’s currently nonexistent role on the team, the Lakers’ need for a defensive-minded point guard who can knock down shots, the Hawks’ desire to get under the cap, and the Hawks’ need for a big man, this is a no-brainer move. Kirk for the Lakers’ trade exception, a big man from a 3rd team to the Hawks, and a pick (preferably from the Lakers) to that 3rd team for their trouble. MAKE A DAMN TRADE SUND

Well I’m glad you’re going to the games Fred. If I lived in ATL, I would’ve at least gone to 4 games, if not more.
But this is the problem with ATL fans in general. You just can’t “give up” on the Hawks because they played one bad game. You’re seriously going to use this game vs one of the best teams in the East, as justification for not going to the Cleveland game . . . for fear that the Hawks will play the same way?
Is this what ATL fandom has come down to? The Hawks have won their last 4 games, but they play one bad game, and you throw in the towel?
That’s why outsiders of ATL always talk about our fan base. When 10K show up to home games, even though the team is good ( but not great ), the clowning will come about.
So do what you have to do Fred. If this bad game will prevent you from seeing us beat Cleveland tomorrow night, then so be it.

I am from here, and to be honest, I believe this city has a lot of whiining fans. Too often Atlanta simply fans do not appreciate what they have. Not going to games does not help, Pittsburgh Pirates fans are doing that now and it’s doing them no good. The teams who force big changes are the ones who go in heavy numbers. Look at the difference between how the Red Sox and Braves handled their collapses last season. I don’t think enough Atlanta appreciate that we have a good team in this city just because it’s not the Lakers, Knicks or Celtics. But if we had more passionate fans who raised hell, we would get BIG changes, instead another year with this same “core.”

Detroit gets a SF that’s 6 years younger and on a little cheaper contract (3 yrs $24M compared to Prince’s new 4 yrs $27M).
Hawks get some veteran leadership. Prince is heating up too. Last 5 games, 17 pts on 48% shooting including hitting 50% of his threes.

Sixers fan here. Yall have a nice team, but halftime killed to the Hawks. They were controlling the game until the half, then they get punked 51- 29 in the 2nd half. WOW. The Sixers are legit, a finals darkhorse out of the East. We have at least 7 guys, depending on matchups, who can get you 20 pts on any given night. No stars, big three or any of that crap. Just a young, athletic group of guys who look like they like playing together and believe in each other. The Hawks were lucky they didn’t get blown out tonight, the Sixers shot under 30% FG in the first half and turned it over like 10+ times. This is the scary part: of the Sixers 11 wins this year, 9 have been by double digits(7 by 20+ pts). The four losses have been by a COMBINED 17 PTS, 3 on the road. I like the direction we are going in, lets show up in South Beach to win. SHOUT OUT TO S PHILLY W 112 & YARNELL ST

“The fan base just can’t expect to get props, if they’re wishy-washy about even the good teams in that city.”
To be clear, I am one of these “good fans”, since I’ve been to every Hawks home playoff game since 2008 and went to a TON of games back when they were starting players like Peja Drobnjak. But with that said, the reason I defend the fans who don’t show up is because I’d rather have money in my pocket than get props from idiots like Rob Parker whose idea of a “good fan” is one who dutifully shows up and hands over their hard earned cash to crooks like Gearon who are too cheap to even fix the scoreboards in the rafters.
ATL fans are smart. Better to throw that $50 bucks at LaStarya’s ass in Magic City than throw it at Michael Gearon. LaStarya’s ass > Michael Gearon’s face.

I agree with this. They need a shooter, but they are a legit contender. I don’t have a problem with the Hawks losing to them. I only have a problem with the way the Hawks lost. The way they lost is too typical of this mental toughness lacking team that we have seen for several years now.

Prison . . . i’m a Bengals fan as well, and about 30% of the fans in that city called itself “boycotting” the Bengals, because we have horrible ownership in the form of Mike Brown.
All that boycott did, was make us look REAL BAD every time we played a home game. 20 – 30 thousand empty seats for some games. Fans of other teams buying up those seats in droves, cheering loudly for their team on OUR home field when the stadium was full.
Here was a young team that was supposed to be one of the worst in the league, playing its azz off all year without Ochocinco and Carson Palmer, and fans chose THIS season to vent about ownership?
It was simply bad timing.
I just get tired of fans jumping on and off the “Hawks bandwagon” every time we have a bad loss ever two or three weeks. Either stay on, or get the hell off. (( Bleep )) the ownership, and support the team.
Just stop with the excuse making about a team that we KNOW isn’t championship material . . . yet.

Eh… they don’t show up to Sixers games, but they are pretty die-hard about the Eagles (and the Flyers from what I hear). When the Eagles (and maybe Flyers) are struggling, they show up and boo them. Same thing Knicks fans did all through the 90s. Show up and boo the Marburys and Eddy Currys that inept management decided to overpay, all while James Dolan laughed all the way to the bank.

nbsb,
I wouldn’t talk that great about the Sixers but yall did a good job adjusting to LD’s offense over the Half. The Problem for the Hawk was the coaching, yall adjusted to the offense but LD did nothing about it in game. Basically he did just what he said the team did, “It got tough for us in the third quarter and we quit. That’s what happened.” He quit when yall started to take over in the 3rd. So his team had no clue what to do when it god though.
Jeff Teague: “I don’t think nobody out there is trying to quit. They just made good plays. We don’t have no quitters on this team. ”
Josh Smith re Drew: “If he felt that way, that’s his opinion. In times of adversity, everybody has to stick together. Everybody.”
There is the proof behind Drew quitting on the team.

If you can’t field even an occasionally competitive team in a league that is designed for parity, you are really trying to suck as an owner. You really think so? Philadelphia Eagles fans have been raising hell calling for Andy Reid’s firing for a good five years now, and even after a season where they would be totally justified in cleaning house, they are bringing back Reid and the rest of the staff. Ultimately owners do what owners want.
The Red Sox have a human owner who is shelling out a league-high payroll and is willing to win. The Braves have a corporate owner for whom the Braves are a tax write-off. That is the reason why the Red Sox made big changes, not the fans.

Varejao’s contract has four more years on it and would seriously interfere with any plans to extend Josh or Teague. But I can get you Ryan Hollins AND Semih Erden for Kirk. That is a lot of fouls to use, if nothing else, and Hollins provides a shot blocking presence that Zaza doesn’t provide.

If you post another stupid stat about what Marvin is the best at on this team, any credibility you have left will vanish. Marvin is probably the 9th or 10th best player on this team. He is good at shooting free throw’s, and he is a decent rebounder. That’s it. Willie Green, Ivan, Joe, Josh, Teague, Vlad, Hinrich, Horford, and even Zaza are better basketball players than him. Lakers were down 20 in the first half, on the second game of a back to back, and have fought back to make it an 8 point game in the 4th quarter.
Hawks were up 9 at halftime, after a day of rest, and not only blew the lead and lost by double digits.

Losing a game isn’t what disturbs me about this team. It’s just that when they simply lope up and down the court, don’t give any effort on defense and see Josh lope down the court and chunk up 5 top of the key shots in the 3Q (0-5 result) – THAT’s what sucks.
Give 100% and I’m behind you win or lose – but play (and coach) like you simply don’t care, I just can’t see playing the “faithful fan”.
I’ll guaran-damn-tee you one thing. I never saw a Hubie Brown coached Hawks team play with no heart.
One final thing – a team really has to have a face of the franchise, and this squad doesn’t and hasn’t one since they traded Dominique. The same franchise that traded Pistol Pete (for Dean Meminger, Bob Kauffman and a 1st round pick they didn’t even sign, losing David Thompson to the ABA).

Jersey #2!
“People complain because Matt Ryan is the Falcons’ version of Joe Johnson — paid elite money and given elite billing by the team’s marketing department for less than elite production.” -Najeh-
______________
DUI: Matt and Joe’s jersey number tells the whole story: 2nd tier talent gets you 2nd round exits – OOPs … At least Joe will get his team to the 2nd round.

Regrads if its just one game, they are a team that you might meet in the playoffs and you don’t want to be on the losing end like this.
I think that Drew is right and everybody quit including him, and believe me I don’t that it will make your team better when you keep losing games like this. I think that something needs to happen, seriously

The franchises have sucked……Leave the fans alone….They aint the problem,,,,

As highly as the Knicks were regarded (especially prior to this season), they have tremendously underachieved. Where are all of the analysts that had the Knicks over us?

DREW THINKS HE’S POPPOVICH OR THE ZEN MASTER. JUST LIKE ANYTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD, YOU HAVE TO EARN CREDIBILITY IF YOU WANT TO GET AWAY WITH THAT STUFF.

Until Drew has the balls to sit Josh’s butt on the bench when he continues to chunk up those bricks, I’m ready for a new coach that has a pair!

Implants!
LaStarya’s got back! Kim Kardashian got implants! Perhap’s LaStarya can get that spot on a Reality TV Show?
What IF we put a thong on Marvin and send him down to the Lemon Peel, (an old Atlanta strip club we used to go to, to see the fellas). I might cash my check, pay $50 and make it rain downtown.
I heard Marvin was standing erect now? I can’t tell when, he keeps falling down in the paint. Imma’ give him Detlef Shremp’s old monicker: “Dutch Boy in The Paint”. Most players who get their shot blocked don’t fall down like that. The least Marvin can do is run back on defense and make a play on his offender, at least give a hard retaliatory foul, if not a block of his own. Where is the fire, passion, desire and pride?

Ryan never takes blame? I don’t know about that. He might be the most criticized person in this city after Gearon and Fredi Gonzalez. And rightfully so.

Najeh,
“I can understand LD being p-ssed at a 3rd quarter let down just one day after he talked about not having 3rd quarter let downs, but I don’t see how airing that out to the media is a productive strategy.”
Agreed. This will do nothing positive for the players.
Also, can’t understand how Ivan could’t see the floor for much of the night (especially during that 3rd). Still smh at that one.
