Trail Blazers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
7:46 pm January 18, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- Larry Drew is using the “big” lineup with Jason Collins at center. Marcus Camby plans to suit up for the Blazers but Nate McMillan said he’s an emergency option. Hawks nemesis Kurt Thomas will start at center. “It’s a good matchup with Kurt Thomas who plays a physical game, Twin who plays a physical game,” Drew said.
- Tracy McGrady (back) said he’s good to go.
- Jamal Crawford on how things ended with the Hawks: “I feel like they had over a year to make something happen. I was part of their core and I was the only one that wasn’t under contract past last year. Teammates, coaches, the city, the fans—it’s all good. No hard feelings. But kind of deep down inside last year I knew it was the end of the line for me. I had a feeling.”
- Crawford on his slow start with the Blazers: “I’m still figuring things out a little bit. It’s similar to when I first came here. Eventually I got it and the same thing will happen here. It’s hard when you go to a different team, a different system,. Everything is already in place. It will come.”
- Drew on Crawford: “I will remember always having that guy when we needed instant offense off the bench. He was a guy, once he got in the game, you knew there was a guy who could put numbers up in a hurry. When you go back and look at teams that have had success they have kind of had guys like that. Back in my day, I remember a guy like Vinnie Johnson. Once he got in the game, you knew it was going up, you knew he could get in a groove, get in a rhythm and turn bad starts into good starts.”
- Drew on not having that kind of guy on the bench now: “When Tracy gets in the game, yeah, we run plays for Tracy. But we try to do things now that involve every player and just let them get what they can out of it. With Willie [Green], who can score the ball, he’s not a guy we run plays to, he just gets his in the offense. Vladimir [Radmanovic] is the same way. The way our team is structured now these guys kind of gets theirs with what we do, where with Jamal everyone knew we were running plays for him.”
- Crawford said he might “rope-a-dope” the Hawks and not look to light them up as L.D. has suggested. Drew is on the lookout: “That’s normal for any player that comes back to face his former team to be motivated to come back and play well. We don’t treat it any different than normal. We have a game plan and we have to go out and execute it. Jamal is a scorer and he can go out and score in bunches. Just like against any other scorer, you have to make sure you are prepared to defend him and have a backup plan.”
- Drew on Josh Smith’s free-throw slump: “Just keep practicing. He’s going to get fouled a lot. He’s just got to get focused on the free-throw line. With him, a lot of his free throws are long. From time to time I shout out to him, ’soft,’ so he can take a little bit off of it. It’s just something he’s got to spend more and more time with because he’s going to get to the free-throw line a lot and he’s got to step up there and knock them down.”

Jalen Rose is on the Smoove for All Star bandwagon.
FTPB, here is my trade proposal. Benefits all three teams, especially if a pick or two is sent to New Orleans.

I personally think what we are seeing right now with the Hawks is “fools goal”. We are too much a jump shooting team. We are making them right now. That won’t last! Especially from Josh Smith. Fools goals not doubt.

By the way, this is not NBA-related but it affects every one of us since we all spend time on the Internet. If they pass SOPA, MC could be charged with a crime for posting that Jamal game winner video on the previous blog. If they pass SOPA, Leuer’s mom could be charged with a crime for every video he uploads to his Youtube channel. If they pass SOPA, pretty much every one of us will be unable to use the Internet the way we currently do.
Keep the Internet free.

“Good call AJ. Can you guess which player who has been in the top 10 in playoff rebounding rate two of the last 3 years is the lowest-paid player in that category? He shouldn’t be hard to spot on this list… he’s the only one making less than $10m per season:”
Here’s another hint: he’s also the 12th worst player on that list in turnover rate.

I like Twin for his basketball IQ, ability to take charges, and some of the little things he does that don’t show up on the stat sheet (like sealing his man out of the lane so that a teammate has an easy path to the rim). With that said, if the Hawks had to sign a veterans’ minimum old unathletic physical center, I’d gladly take Kurt Thomas over Twin any day. I’ve been wanting Kurt Thomas on this team for three or four years now, at least since the Milwaukee-Atlanta series a few years ago.

Buddy Grizzard’s Column!
”The Hawks’ problem isn’t lack of size as much as lack of quality size. After Josh, the second most effective big man the Hawks have is a guy straight out of the D-League. Other teams may not have big men who dwarf the Hawks’ big men, but their big men are much more effective.” -Najeh-

Every national media member spits out a similar cliche when it comes to the Hawks.
Wilbon – “The Hawks go as Joe Johnson goes”
Kenny – “The Hawks will go as far as Josh Smith takes them”
I am pretty sure none of these people watches more than five minutes of Hawks games before these games start.

LOL Najeh . . . funny how your trade has not affected the winning percentage of the Hawks.
I’m hoping that Josh will have another big game tonight. He needs to play well in front of a national audience, in order to build that proper playoff support.
Garnett is a fan favorite, so he’ll be named as the starter, even if Bosh deserves it. Bosh will be the 2nd PF. So it’s up to Josh to play well enough to get that last forward spot from the coaches vote. He’ll need to beat out Amare, Kris Humphries, Boozer and possibly Ryan Anderson.
Looking at center, Dwight is the automatic vote by the fans. Greg Monroe is a rising sleeper pick to get that 2nd center spot, if it doesn’t go to Bargnani. So Josh needs to hope that the Coach of the East team only takes 2 centers, and 3 PFs.
Rose will start at PG and Rondo will probably be the backup. Deron Williams will probably be the 3rd PG taken.
You’re looking at Wade as the starter and JJ as the backup at the 2 ( Note: JJ may not make the All-Star team, if he were playing in the West )
At the SF spot, you’re looking at Lebron as the starer and Melo as the backup. The 3rd SF could be Pierce, or especially Iggy, who if Philly keeps playing well, HAS to make the team.
So right now, this is my All-Star team
PG: ROSE – Rondo – Deron
G: WADE – Johnson
F: LEBRON – Melo – Iggy
PF: BOSH – Garnett – Smith
C: HOWARD – Monroe

@ Najeh –
The national perception of the Hawks is due in part on how and what is shown on ESPN. I will never forget the coverage we got when we beat the Heat at the time they were undefeated. The highlights showed 9 total highlights….6 of the 9 were about LBJ and Dwade. Only 3 were of the Hawks….
Same thing when we beat Chicago like a dog….there were only 6 highlights of that game….4 was about the Bulls and only 2 of the Hawks.

You can tell they’re just spitting out “taking points”. Even Mullin just called us “athletic”. We’re no more athletic than anyone else. Our only legit “athlete” is Smith.
As for Jamal being “clutch” for Portland, Jamal has played well in THREE GAMES in Portland, yet, he’s the reason why they’re 8 – 5? Nah man . . . he’s the reason why the Blazers have lost 2 of their last 3 games. In the last 2 losses, Jamal shot 5 – 23 FG.

What confuses me the most and is downright mind-boggling is Larry Drew’s continued use of Jason Collins like he is ANYWHERE close to a legitimate NBA player. He in FACT is without a doubt the WORST player in the NBA today. HANDS DOWN!!! I mean he should not even be on a D-League roster let alone the Hawks. I don’t understand why he is even on the roster. let alone getting any playing time, let alone STARTING for the Hawks. He is terrible…I cant explain just how bad he is….He cant shoot AT ALL, Nothing, he cant make jump shots, putbacks, layups, 5 footers, nothing at all, he is slow, he cant defend, gets outrebounded nightly, turns the ball over every time he touches it, contributes nothing on offense, and just bogs the offense down. All i see him do is set half hearted screens, miss every shot he takes, dribble the ball off his foot, and then get beat down the court and out-rebounded on defense! Seriously, we can get a guy off the street to do that, why not play Pachulia and Ivan Johnson and NEVER use Collins unless absolutely forced to??

I agree 80% of the time. Collins’ worth to a team is in setting screens and defending low post scoring big men. That’s when his true worth is showcased.
IN a game like this however, he shouldn’t even play. Aldridge isn’t going to do a lot of scoring down on the blocks. Kurt Thomas is hardly a scoring threat at all. If Collins could at least rebound the damn basketball, he’d be a nice option at center on most nights. But he doesn’t even rebound. He’s just . . . . . there.
If Collins was an NFL player, he’d be a 4th string blocking TE. A guy that gets no passes thrown his way, with his main function being to block for the RB in short yardage situations . . and be the blocking TE on the field goal and extra point team.

Lamarcus Aldridge is garbage. I remember I thought he was going to be a mix between Garnett and David West.
He’s one of those guys who’s so big he’s too slow. And he doesn’t have the power to use it to his advantage.
Consistently. More center than power forward.

In this condensed season, don’t be surprised to see this type of game every so often. Not just from the Hawks, but from any team. With the starters playing so many minutes we’ll have games where the bench NEEDS to show up, and luckily for us it seems we have a bench that can do that.

1. Portland Trail Blazers: Contenders or pretenders?
Henry Abbott, TrueHoop: Contenders, barely. The bad news is that Nate McMillan is playing people long minutes in a dense season. The other bad news is that he has a history of being predictable, which is especially costly in the playoffs. However, this season the style is all different, with higher energy and less predictability. This is also now a veteran team. If healthy, the Blazers could make a run.
Jovan Buha, ClipperBlog: Contenders. Make no mistake, this team can win the West. By ditching his traditional coaching style (slow-paced, half-court basketball), Nate McMillan has finally put the Blazers in position to play to their full potential. They’re deep, long and athletic. Oh yeah, LaMarcus Aldridge is pretty good, too.
Zach Harper, Daily Dime Live: Pretenders. It’s not that I think the Blazers are bad or not one of the better teams in the West, it’s just that I don’t see this being a championship-capable team quite yet.
LaMarcus Aldridge has been fantastic and Gerald Wallace is a great weapon next to him on both ends. I just wonder where the consistent threat from the perimeter is going to come from. If they can address that need or someone on their roster (Matthews, Crawford, Batum?) can become an elite scorer at the end of games, I’m on board.
Bret LaGree, Hoopinion: Contenders. Behind the Thunder, the Western Conference is wide open. If Portland converts the benefit of the doubt regarding its tough early schedule into wins as the schedule eases, the Blazers will contend for the second seed.
Rob Mahoney, The Two Man Game: Contenders. The Blazers are hovering around the impressive distinction of having both a top-10 offense and a top-10 defense, a special level of balance that typically results in playoff success. Portland is certainly an imperfect team, but it has an opportunity to capitalize on a Western Conference in flux by way of its speed, efficiency and versatility.
2. Atlanta Hawks: Contenders or pretenders?
Abbott: Pretenders, until Al Horford is healthy again. In the playoffs, they have an opportunity to overwhelm teams with long athletes such as Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Horford. But of those guys, Horford is the one who plays the best team defense and scores most efficiently. They need him in order to beat a great team like the Heat or the Bulls.
Buha: Pretenders. Don’t be fooled by their impressive start — even with Al Horford, the Hawks are stuck in mediocrity. But playing without him for possibly the rest of the season? Atlanta will be lucky to win two playoff games. Making the playoffs, of course, is contingent on the Hawks not blowing the team up (and trading Josh Smith) before the March deadline.
Harper: Pretenders. I’m on the record of urging people to never trust the Hawks, and until they get new ownership, a new system and a new attitude, I stand by that stance. Losing Al Horford cements that notion further in my mind. We all know they have the talent to make things interesting in the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean much of anything. They have to want to change the basketball culture there before we can take them seriously.
LaGree: Pretenders. The Hawks will definitely make the playoffs, but the absence of Al Horford for likely the rest of the season and the day-to-day uncertainty of Tracy McGrady’s ability to contribute seriously reduces their margin for error in the unforgiving context of a seven-game series.
Mahoney: Pretenders, and that was true even before Horford’s unfortunate injury. With Horford, Atlanta is a sub-elite team with a chance to muddle the playoff picture but little opportunity for actual contention. Without him, they’ll likely live and die by Joe Johnson’s itchy trigger finger.
I don’t have much faith in the Hawks’ ability to maintain their success on either end of the court; the regression is coming, and Horford’s absence will hit the Hawks particularly hard on the defensive end.

No Al, no problem. Hawks look just as good(or bad at times) without him. They beat the teams they usually beat(struggled a little), and they played an excellent 1ST HALF against a good team.(they always do). Same ole, same ole. lol. Btw, if the Hawks keep winning without Al, Sund might start thinking trade bait.

I had the same thoughts today about Al, In his defense Al has All the right physical attributes, but where Al comes up short is his desire. He doesnt have the fire. No heart to take his game up… or the team up. Maybe this injury and the long struggle to get back to playing shape and game conditioning will motivate Al to do better.
I just shake my head at Al. He could and should be a stopper in the paint.

I wonder what the answers to that contenders/pretenders survey would be if Portland was in the East and Atlanta was in the West. I doubt that anyone picks Portland as a contender with Miami and Chicago in the conference.
This is the first time I’m watching Portland this year, and to me they are a lot like the Hawks in terms of the kinds of things they try to do on offense. Their go-to guy can probably score against good defenses better than our go-to guy, since Aldridge gets to the line better than Joe, but it seems to me that they would run in to a lot of the same problems in the playoffs that the Hawks have had.

The sad thing about that Portland vs ATL ( contenders / pretenders discussion ), are the comments from Bret LeGree.
I don’t know what username he uses on this blog, or on Hawksquawk, but the sad thing is that he so believes in advanced stats, that it blinds him from what this team truly is at times. He’s the same guy that once believed that Horford should be the #1 option in the offense.
He, of all people, should recognize that this team is far superior than last year’s team. Even without Horford, we look to have the right type of mix of people here to compensate for his loss. We’ll see how the season plays out, but we may all be apologizing to Sund at the end of the year.
It’s the DEFENSE that makes us a Contender. The defense has been excellent all year for the most part.

The reason people wanted to get rid of JJ is because his salary is greater than his production. When you have a limited amount of money to spend, you have to maximize the amount of production you get for your money. It’s not that he’s not a good player. It’s that his contract is a bad one. Of course, the other side of that is if you’re going to pay guys like Marvin, Bibby abd Claxton, then why not pay JJ?
It also depends on how you use JJ. Iso-Joe was fine when this was a bad team with no other options, but as this team developed, the offense needed to mature.

Thought they were pretty dumb with their comments about the Hawks. They completely disregarded how the Hawks pushed the Bulls around for 7 outta the 8 quarters we played them this season, how we went to Miami and gave them their first L.
This team was a Top 3 team in the East minus Horford. They’ve done well minus Horford, although we’ve had a pretty manageable schedule and played a number of these games at home. With another quality big, this group can make some noise in the playoffs, and could push a team like CHI.

The Horford Effect!
IDK, but I do see mental toughness finally coming from these Hawks! Joe is like “Mr. McGoo” he is oblivious to everything going on around him. I did see him seething though when Lamarcus pushed him two feet for a stolen rebound!
But, The Horford Effect to me is: the team is rallying together like never before. Playing like “Us” against the World!”. Thanks and Kudos to Charles Barkley for helping to light that fire under my Hawks.
We still need to add another defending, rebounding BIG though to really seal the deal. I’d even look at some D-Leaguers at this point. All we need is some more rebounds.

And the Cavs have played like only 4 home games, and 9 road games. Can the Cavs really be that good with Irving, Jamison, Varejo, Sessions, Tristan, Gee, Gibson, Parker and the rest?

We do need 1 more Big, I just don’t know if LD will let Stack go.
Talk about balance – when Hinrich gets back we got:
PG – Teague/Hinrich
SG – JJ/Green
SF – Marvin/TMac
PF – Josh/Ivan/VladRad
C – ZaZa/Twin
And who knows who we keep of Sloan, Pargo, and Stack. And I know that lineup, you can plug different guys in different spots, but you get the picture – deep and balanced, except we need 1 more good Big.

We should use our 2nd round pick to bring in Erden from Cleveland. Long, tall 7 footer, runs the floor well, athletic, good finisher, and best of all cheap for what we need…more size he can’t hurt only can help.

MattP im with you. Why try to just get by at the 5 position? why not improve? Become a serious contender. Chris Daniels has got All the tools. Size and can score, board, alter shots, plus he is a natural center. Lets give him the chance. Id keep the 2 second round picks and waiting for Al to come back is foolish on 2 accounts.
1) at his best hes a 12 pts 8 reb 1 blk guy. Mediocre by intelligent standards. I can assure you he wont be at his best and that will hurt the team more than help .
2) An injury of this magnitude takes a long time to heal. The swelling and the rebuilding tissues will limit the range and motions of the arm. If youve ever balled before you know that will fck up your game.
On the average injuries like this one takes about 18 months (with no set backs like infections or slow heals) before a player can be back to the level he was before the injury.
If the hawks keep Al, he will have to earn his way back. But I dont think they will keep him. His salary is to great for a 12 pt player. I think Al gets amnestied and we free up his salary and go after a real center who can have an impact.

The funny thing is, so many say we need another shooter like Vlad – that would be Chris Daniels – a banger, who averages over 2 blocks per game – averages more rebounds per game than Ivan did – but also shoots 45% from 3. He seems like a natural for the Hawks. Like Al, just bigger and a better 3pt shooter – but of course not nearly the intangibles of Al – and I’m sure his midrange is just not there like Al’s If he was as good as Al, he would be in the NBA, hands down. But he is pretty good.

On Friday, with Spencer not playing, maybe Ivan should start at the PF position, and have Josh man the C. I wouldn’t want Josh starting the game off guarding Brand, when Ivan is there to use his fouls. The Hawks with Josh in the middle of a zone defense could cause problems for the Sixers, because they only have 2 shooters on the team.

For what it’s worth, Chris Daniels does have better stats by a decent margin than Byron Mullens had last year in D League – More points per game, rebounds, blocks, assists, shooting %, shooting% from 3 etc.

I told you guys, Josh and Joe are loving playing without Al. And they compliment each other quite well. Joe and Josh are the best passers on the team (with McGrady right there). So the offense running through them on most plays are paying dividends. There seems to be better spacing and always someone in position for offensive rebounding since Al has gone down.

I know, 4-1 really w/o Al – blown out at Pacers after Al played 5 minutes. I really want to see some road wins so we’ll know what we’ve got.
Win at Home vs 3 scrub teams and Portland – Let’s see how we do on the road. Not being pessimistic, just a realist

SteveW,
I don’t really want to count the Pacers game in there because he went down in the 1st and the Hawks were not prepared for that. I do agree with you, I want to see how they do on the road.

Larry Drew says Vladimir Radmanovic DNP-CD based on matchup. “He will be back in rotation.”
That is why he didn’t play Vlad. Still doesn’t make sense, he could have still played him alittle bit.

Grandad – LD said matchups prevented him from playing – will be back in the rotation
Slim – Hope your right – And I wish I knew why LD was such an idiot about Teague last season myself. And if HInrich hadn’t of gone down, no tellin’ if he’d be buried again this season – 3 G rotation with Green/Hinrich/JJ, with TMac playing some maybe. LD hated Teague for some reason – and then Teague bailed him out of that Chicago mess.

Larry Drew is doing an excellent job !
He will learn with experience to begin the 4th with starters
in order to bury his opponent.
The 1st three min of 4th Qtr very important !
We had Portland on the ropes;
should have finished them off.
Even as I critique, I see growth with LD.
The Offense is beautiful.
The Defense is unrelenting.
Our rebounding is adequate.
The teamwork is surprisingly extraordinary.
Who is responsible, why LD of course !
