Raptors at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
- Chris Vivlamore is on the scene again. He’s undefeated. I’m told that some technical issues will be resolved soon that will allow C-Viv to post blogs on the days he covers.
- Larry Drew is using the “big” lineup with Jason Collins at center. Drew told C-Viv he likes Zaza Pachulia and Vladimir Radmanovic playing together off the bench.
- “It’s matchup,” Drew said. “It’s also a combination of bring Zaza off the bench with Vladimir. I have been playing those guys together more and I just like that combination of both coming off [the bench] together. They play well together and seem to complement each other. I wanted to go back to that. I also wanted to go back to Jason at the starting spot. He’s a little more familiar as a starter and I wanted to start giving him some more minutes.”
- Tracy McGrady (back) is active.
- For the Raptors, Andrea Bargnani (calf), James Johnson (ankle), Jerryd Bayless (ankle) and Arron Gray (personal) are out.

Its never bad to see Chicago lose….Memphis played very well today and Speights has filled in nicely for Randolph.
Did you guys see Lionel Hollins left hand? They guy has 2 dislocated fingers permanently from his playing days and all he has to do is show that hand to his team to motivate them…and if it weren’t for Teague, I would like to have Conley as my PG.

I take back my earlier comments, Sund needs to look to add a FA center in the next 7-10 days. I just looked at the schedule for next month, it is quite possible that the Hawks could go 0-for-February. Bring in someone in the next week so they will have a few games before the ugly February schedule launches.

Sautee – Now about Lopez. We would have to cut Sloan, Stack, and Pargo (when Hinrich get’s back). We would then be about 400,000 to 500,000 over where we are now. So yes, we would be in the tax, but not by much.
But no, I do not expect us to go into the tax for Lopez. This is not Mickey Arinson we’re dealing with here.
So it looks like Dampier, Pryzbilla, Chris Daniels, Randolph Morris (AAAaagh!!), Magnum Rolle, Benson, or somebody, if we get anyone. And then cut Stack? to pay for it and make room on the roster.
And maybe Pargo? when Hinrich gets back. Wish I could see more of Sloan to know if he’s viable or not. Certainly cheaper than Pargo.

Philly looks good, but Hawes is fading (don’t know about today) a little bit, and they have played an incredibly soft schedule according to ESPN/Hollinger. Hawes has been hurt a little also. They may have picked up some D League C or something that’s doing pretty good, and that’s why they were able to trade Speights.

That’s exactly what some of us have been saying. Make the move from now to give a player time in the system, extra time to get in shape etc, rather than wait until said player is absolutely necessary. Be proactive…which is really being reactive at the same time (in this case).

Hinrich – I know the Hawks need him to come back sometime before Feb. 10th, because that’s when all the non-guaranteed contracts tender ie become guaranteed. So Pargo, Sloan, Stack?, Ivan all are here to stay or cut on that date or before.

Just hitting the blog. I am glad to see the Hawks win another but I was very impressed with Raptors forward Ed Davis. I would love to see him in a Hawks uniform. What’s everybody’s opinion on that idea? Delusional or on point

While it wont help offensively the hawks should look at Okafor. It would seem that he doesnt fit into new orleans plans going forward. He is a big that will patrol the paint and collect rebounds and block shots. I think marvin and zaza for him would be a good trade.

Strange game. I tried to post from the arena but my connection kept going down. Would be nice to have Wi-Fi at the arena.
Anyway, it seemed as if the hawks should’ve been up 10 the entire game, but this was a game of runs. Great under control game by Smith tonight.. He was a monster tonight. And JJ had a real good all around game. Stepped up big time at the end. It was an ugly win but I’ll take it.
Just wish the crowd was bigger. Only about 10K at the game but the crowd wasn’t too dead.
Good job hawks. Now this schedule gets much tougher in a hurry.

Yeah it worked, but it may have just been because the guy at the ticket counter decided to be nice. I got 3 tickets and he applied the card to all three of them even though it’s only supposed to be valid for 2, so I can’t say for sure that all the other ticket window people will let that slide too.

Yeah, I get no connection in Philips these days at all. Don’t know if AT&T or DASG is the problem but I don’t have signal issues anywhere else. If they are not going to operate the scoreboards in the rafters the least they can do is hook us up with free Wi-Fi.

Hilarious. Last Saturday night, attendance was 13,300. Today, on a “holiday,” 11,000 showed up. Why again does Atlanta have a basketball team? They should have left with the Thrashers. Even Charlotte averages way more people, ha ha.

Kind of a boring game today. No flow at all. Win is a win, though. Looking forward to Wednesday’s game with Portland.
Josh Smith is just killing it these days. I have never seen him play better.
Jeff Teague mixing it up with Maglore was the highlight of the afternoon for me.
Am watching the TNT tipoff show. The crew sucked the nuts of Philly and Indy, along with Chicago and Miami. Never even mentioned the Hawks. Kind of getting tired of the national guys always dismissing the Hawks.

I see an interesting situation between Sloan and Pargo. Pargo is the vet who isn’t going to get any better. He hasn’t shot well, and definitely doesn’t penetrate or do anything to create easy scoring opportunities for others, or score in any other way besides shooting jumpshots. However, defensively, he does an excellent job of pressuring the ball. Sloan is the rookie who has plenty of room for improvement. He’s a much better OFF option than Pargo, he penetrates and has the ability to create easy scoring opportunities for other as well as himself. His biggest problem is his DEF, which isn’t close to Pargo’s.

It’s not going so good. I still wish I was with the Hawks. Through 13 games, I’m only shooting 34.2% from the field and 30.0% from the 3pt. arc while just averaging 12.0ppg in only 24.4mpg [minutes per game]. On a positive note, I am shooting 94.9% from the FT line. Coach Nate McMillan doesn’t know how to utilize me. In addition, Raymond Felton and I have chemistry issues. It looks like it’s going to be a long and disappointing season up here in Rip City.

Al’s problem is coordination at 6′8 Ivan moves like a PF, Horford at 6′10 moves more robotically ala a center. Not particulary efficient running motion or post moves etc. Body control is key there.

Based on this observation, Pargo is tenacious on defense and may surprise with offense. Seeing as how Sloan is a penetrator who lacks defense … They are situational to picking up where Jeff leaves off. If we’re up, then use Pargo and run the offense through the post: Zaza and Ivan, With Vlad on the perimeter. If you want o keep gashing the defense with penetrating offense: use Sloan.
The solution is Captain Kirk who gives you both assets in one player. Who do you release when Kirk returns! Answer: Sloan.
Defense trumps offense on this high scoring team without their All Star center.

Leur … They always wear the blue uni’s @ home for special games: MLK for the city! Also, I think they wear the road blue unis for specific games like holidays: Thanks Giving or X-Mas and Nationally televised games when played @ home. Sorta like what the Falcons do with the “all black unis” once or twice per year @ home.
