Agree Najeh, I think Teague should go to the line 6+ times a game but he rarely ever gets there because the refs don’t give him any calls, he just has to keep playing and eventually I think he will get that respect.

Josh is a better scorer and attacks the basket more now. Ivan Johnson should be the new starting PF, he’s earned it. Bench Marvin and ivan will grow.

Following our last thread :

I dont know if thats true. He had NJ on his list and we know hes not going there. He had the lakers but that aint happening either.

In fact the 3 teams he mentioned were all major market teams and even with Howard NJ doesnt win a championship. I dont think Howard is saying he doesnt want to play for ATL.”Oh contra” If that was the case the ASG 2 month pursuit would not have made the press. ( and still does) you can best believe that when Sund and the ASG went to the Magic organization to make the offer, the Magic countered saying Al Horford needed to be part of the package. No doubt they had already asked Howard if this was a doable deal. This bargaining would not have been consider for as long as it has been, if Howard wasnt made aware… and even since it has been made public Howard hasnt said oh no way, Im not interested in Atlanta. In fact hes been very quiet about it. The only thing he has said is , “I still want out”

There is a reason that Josh and D12 have made so many related commercials, at last count there were 5 or 6. These two are very good friends and when asked who should the Magic get of available players that would make D12 stay, Josh was on a very very short list.

To put it all together. If D12 and Josh and JJ were all playing together in Atlanta this would be a major market. Secondly this is already a very good team and D12 coming would just thrust us into the championship picture, so hed get his second wish, too.

Bottom line. D12 isnt saying no to Atlanta, his home town, no, not at all.

Teague plays hard and attacks the rim. I love that about him. Many of you saw that long before I did. A lot of you were calling for Teague minutes the past two seasons. All of you were right.

One concern I have….really noticed it the past three games. Teague, or someone else, will make a slick pass and we have guys not ready for the ball. Has happened to Zaza several times and happened once to Josh today on a pass from Teague. Gotta be ready. I’m just waiting for the ball to bounce off someone’s chest at a key moment in the game.

The Portland game on Wednesday is going to be a good one. Hope the fans come out for it, but know they won’t. Shame…the crowds were good at the beginning of the season. Have tapered off a lot. Since the Miami game, really.

Those of you without a ticket for Wednesday, go get one! Have to be cheap on Stubhub or out on the street.

Three wins without Al against sh-tty teams doesn’t tell me anything more than getting blown out without Al against the Sixers and Hornets last year told me.

They really should have won this game by a lot more. Toronto’s zone gave them problems in the second half. Offensive rebounding kept them in it during those stretches, and a better rebounding team than Toronto will be able to zone up the Hawks and get boards when the Hawks miss. Josh played great, but he also bailed out several bad Hawks possessions with made jumpers, which are not always going to go down.

I’m interested to see how they play against Portland, the first good team they are going to face after Al’s injury. Still not convinced they can get through the season without upgrading the center position.

Collins and Zaza combined today: 0/1, 6 points, 4 boards, 2 dimes in 30 minutes combined.

The one positive is that they had zero turnovers, which in Zaza’s case usually doesn’t happen, but is that enough production from the center position against better teams? I doubt it.

With a legit NBA Center, Hawks will be in the Eastern Conference Finals. Rasheed Wallace coming out of retirement. If he started and played 25 minutes a night, Hawks could compete with Bulls. if Wallace ws committed to winning and conditioning, he would help this team.

I think the hawks are looking good without Horford but cant really judge that based on the teams they played. I think they really need a defensive center that can rebound. Zaza is too slow/clumsy and inconsistent to be the starter, not saying he is a bad backup just saying he is not starter material, Collins is only good for guarding guys like Howard. Tonight we were getting out rebounded by the Raptors and they didn’t have their starting center.

Portland will be a good game to judge how the Hawks are without Horford.

Jody

January 16th, 2012
9:34 pm

So let me get this straight. Since Horford went down to injury, the Hawks caught a beat down against a legit Pacers team and then won three games at home against the lottery bound Bobcats, Timberwolves and Raptors (without their best player) and the conclusion is the Hawks “play much better without Al Horford”? Lol at the Horford hate. Let’s see how well they play without him against playoff caliber teams.

Drew

Well, the honeymoon period is over now. We are going to start seeing some winning teams in competition again. Things should get interesting now. I wasn’t surprised that the Hawks beat Charlotte, Minnesota, and Toronto in 3 straight home games. I expected that, even without Al. After all, those 3 teams have a combined record of 11-29. I think our next game should be much more telling.

We finally have a winning team coming to town in the Portland Trail Blazers. It will be nice to see how the Horford-less Hawks do against a winning team. Hopefully, these wins over losing teams are not just fools gold. Personally, I don’t expect the Hawks to beat a lot of the tougher teams without Al and Kirk, and without consistent bench play. I’d say there’s a solid chance that the Hawks can defeat Portland in a home game though. Portland’s defense should test our offense, and their front line will likely outplay ours significantly, but if the jump shots continue to fall and if we continue to get to the free throw line, I see good things coming.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. This is the first time in several years I have seen the Raptors without Bargnani, and they looked tougher and better on the interior than I have ever seen them. If I was running that team I would try to trade Bargnani for as good a scorer at SG or SF as I could find. Ed Davis is a keeper and Amir Johnson could help a lot of playoff teams. I don’t think it’s that far-fetched to say the Hawks would have won easier if Bargnani had played.

I wouldn’t underestimate Bargnani. He’s never been a great rebounder, but he’s been playing very well lately, and he’s a very good offensive big man (moreso this year). He can score in a lot of different ways. I doubt anyone available to play for the Hawks today would have been able to prevent him from scoring a significant amount of points. Ivan might have attempted to push him around, but at his height, Bargnani could easily shoot over him without having to be “broken in half”. Bargnani plays more of a skill/finesse game than a power game, meaning guys like Collins would have been ineffective against him.

A common theme that will be in the air about this three game winning streak is the caliber of opponent. But that’s an excuse to not be able to bash the Hawks right off after losing Horford. If the Hawks had lost one or the unthinkable 2 or 3, the haters would be in full force picking apart every aspect of the game that Al may have been involved.

Bottom line, the Hawks won the games they were supposed to win.

T-Mac had a stiff back after the half. Does this guy ever stay healthy? I’m starting to think the first few games were an aberration.

Also, there has the be somebody in the D league better than Zaza ‘fumbles’ Pachulia and Jason ‘cheeseburger’ Collins. Why are these fool even getting a paycheck?

I agree on starting Ivan. This guy brings grit and heart on defense. We could start games with more intensity with him in the game. Marvin does better flopping on the floor than shooting baskets.

Kudos to JJ and Josh for stepping it up so far in Al’s absence, but I hold my true judgment of their play after the next few games.

LD is clueless at the flow of the game and subs people when it’s too late. I don’t know why he took so long to get Zaza out of there. I loved how he cried after being pulled, though. U mad brah

The Raptors actually looked like a solid defensive team today, not great, but solid. I guess Dwayne Casey is keeping his promise and instilling a defensive mindset in the players. Oddly enough, they struggled more on the offensive end than they did on the defensive end. It would have been the reverse in the past. I guess that is not a surprise considering their best offensive player and go-to scorer was out.

The Hawks defense was good enough today to get the win, and I’d like to also send DeMar DeRozan a thank you card for helping us get the win by taking a countless amount of terrible shots.

It must be mentioned that the Hawks were without their starting center also.

But even still, though the rebounding could have definitely been better, it didn’t hurt the Hawks too much in this game and isn’t indicative of the overall rebounding of the team without Al. Against the Timberwolves and the leagues second leading rebounder, the Hawks won the rebounding battle 51 – 40.

Then how did we get outrebounded. You mean we were “Out-physicaled” ie Gasol, guys were getting boards on account of length?

Asking cuz I missed the game.

And I have a feeling POR is gonna curb stomp ATL. Based on matchups size etc.

Not to worry because they are West Conf and have no bearing on us emerging from the Eastern Conference Finals.

Sure the win is for the best record and a loss is never acceptable but I don’t want overreaction trades (unless trades are to improve records).

I am more interested in how we match up with Philly. And if we can get another european Vlad type (young consistent starter material) SF/PF to replace Marvin. I am not asking for a Al Harrington type beer belly tweener.

And SMH for those of you that want our All-Star center gone. Because clearly beating the Raps, Nets and Bobcats without him shows how much we don’t need him. There isn’t a “real center” available that’d do this team a lick of good. We beat the Bulls and Heat with Al. Clearly he ain’t an issue. If D12 becomes available to us, talk to me. ———

They are good complementary pieces for a core. Like PB&Jelly. The shooter and the slasher. Both with size at the wings. But you need to play big lineups and play smith in some 1-3 Pick and Roll.

The 1 being the PG, Teague, and Smith being the aforementioned “3″. Maybe its a bad PnR combination.

But the first highlight in the Raptors vs Hawks highlight reel today is a 14 Pick and Roll with Teague and Smith. Teague turns the corner on a big. Maybe despite the quickness of SFs there is hope with Teague and Smith vs a small forward in a PnR.

SFs might disrupt it with quickness on other hand. Smith would have the power advantage to push off on picks. Now would the refs give us star calls? IDK but LD seems comfortable demanding calls and fighting for calls for his team.

The feeling I get from the Hawks is we went from an almost elite team with Al, to a good, maybe an above average team now. Just a feeling, nothing else really.

I do hope we are at least looking at Chris Daniels on Ivan’s old team in DLeague. He’s 27 also, and looks like he could play C a little bit. Jettison Stack, unless he’s the one that has gotten in Josh’s ear and turned him into the 20+ 10+ machine he’s becoming for us.

6 out of Josh’s last 7 games have been among some of his finest ever. That Chicago playoff game last season was exceptional also for Josh.

The amazing thing about Josh is 28 and 15, and you think, wow, he could have played just a bit better. The guy has amazing potential.

And Josh, in the bigger picture really is the elephant in the living room right now. FA after next year, unrestricted. Can we re-sign him, or is his heart set on leaving? I don’t know. I’m sure ASG will not allow him to walk and get nothing, so he either gets re-signed or traded I would guess – I doubt we lose him and get nothing.

His dad would come out behind Al sitting on a chair with a polo shirt/cardigan (Coogi) a button up or maybe Al would be in crutches.

Guys, just know, we tried to trade Josh hard evidently, especially for Enes Kanter on draft day. MC has been reporting on this throughout the months, and even Josh’s reactions. It’s no secret. So if Josh has let ASG (I always want to call them Prince, the group formerly known as ASG) he’s probably not signing without a max offer or something, and ASG is not going to give Josh that offer, trust me, ASG will ditch Josh for something rather than nothing.

And if we want vets, smart players who don’t take so many ill advised shots (you know the LD routine) blah blah blah, I don’t put a trade like this past the Hawks.

Maybe ASG feels like they’ve “Odum’ed” Josh, and the Lakers feel like they’ve “Odum’ed” Gasol, and think after aggressive failed trade(s), it’s time to move these players.

Or it could be some dude stirring up trouble with no basis of reality. I do not know this Brezenski guy who wrote the article, and don’t care enough to waste any more precious seconds of my life to find out about him. At least no right now.

Sund may would get laughed off the phone, but if I was he, I’d offer Al, Joe, and Teague for a package of Lebron and Mike Miller. Riley would have to consider a deal like this, without a doubt. Because it gives them a point, a big they’re missing, and perimeter scoring. And for the Hawks, you instantly sell out the rest of the games, and have a superstar to build the roster around. Not to mention, you’ve cleared up enough cap space (amnestying Miller or Marvin) to make a serious run to signing D12 as a free agent. James-Josh-D12 beats any team, because on defense its a nightmare.

Well they’d also be considered any combination of soft, weak shot blockers, and/or undersized. Bosh AND Horford? Two star guys who’ve complained at C. They’d be called Prima donnas in the 1st bad game.

“like Al very much but Bogut fits like the glove OJ used to murder Nicole and Ron that night… Sorry very tasteless of me but I would love Bogut with this lineup.”

Well not without Leuer. they suddenly acquire too many assets. Leuer could be a pf of the future. And they give more touches to develop Jennings and Harris through the fire. Very young core.

And then they could trade Horford for someone else AND WORST OF ALL they get a high pick to reload even more.

Milwaukee is scared that they will end up like us. Not good enough to win it all not bad enough to get better thru the draft.

They get all that they cannot keep Leuer. And we cannot take back bad contracts. The positives and alternatives for Milwaukee is too much compared to what ATL gets.

Smith.Leuer.Bogut

^from the MIL blog. You cant trade Horford and only get back Bogut it helps MIL to much.

You got to go 2 for 1 (Leuer to become a similar pick and pop version of Horford more range) and Bogut, to make it even remotely close to being mutually beneficial

Like I said they get a pick+ can flip Horford and pick for top picks + youth get more development and Bucks core gets younger (Jennings and Harris)

Smith.Leuer.Bogut

January 17th, 2012
1:07 am

Trading for an all-star big, keeping a potential double double guy in Leuer, and getting a top 5 pick and all we get is 1 big who with no insurance he’ll be healthy?

Need Leuer for insurance, spacing, and depth.. We dont get an equal amount of options. If they dont offer Jon Leuer and Andrew Bogut then they don’t get Horford an opportunity to tank and avoid the playoffs.

If they want to keep Bogut get booted out the playoffs and get a bad pick. Fine but we arent helping them possibly get “Leuer, Horford, Drummond/Barnes etc, Kaman” that’s allowing them to get too much talent sorry

Leuer and Bogut and they keep bad contracts. We add 2 good contracts to our roster this year (Leuer, Bogut)

they add 2 good contracts next year (lotto pick + horford).

That is even in very logical evident manner. 2 positives for 2 positives.

Just when I thought there wasn’t enough Al-for-Bogut talk around here.

Seriously, it is not a bad trade for either team if injuries are not a factor. Stop it with Lueur. He is a hometown kid ala Josh that the Bucks have cheap for the next 5-7 years. They have no reason to involve him for anything.

Horford being injured is the caveat for making the deal in the first place. He’s as close to Dwight as Atlanta will get considering the Clippers are apparently setting the bar for Supaman trade scenarios.

Teague – Hinrich
Joe – T-Mac
Marvin – Rad
Josh – Ivan
Bogut – Zaza

If we can flip Marvin for even a marginally better 3 then sky is the limit.

That trade will never happen for off-court reasons alone. The LeBron-Wade duo is way too valuable as a marketing asset to the Heat, and probably alone accounts for more than half the entire value of the franchise. Even if that trade makes sense in basketball terms (a debatable point) it makes no sense when it comes to profits and losses.

Another thing about Al for Bogut: Al may not be a “true center” or as polished an offensive player as Bogut, but this is a second round team with Al. Is this any better than a second round team with Bogut instead? Would a Teague-Joe-Josh-Bogut core be any more likely to beat the Bulls or the Heat than Teague-Joe-Josh-Al? I’m not convinced.

If the Hawks make a trade involving piece(s) of the core, it should involve a superstar that clearly elevates this team’s ceiling. Bogut is nice but he ain’t no superstar.

Seriously depends on if you start Marvin.

Jon Leuer is looking like a mini-Horford right now. His defense is surprisingly good despite wingspan, good IQ, good jumper, yet at 7′0 he can hit the jumper off the dribble too.

Now with the losing record Does MIL value him that highly? Do they see him as a non negotiable impact player/core piece?

I doubt it with the way the season is going they might not see it. They only look at wins and losses and ignore advance stats.

This was strictly a cruise control win, so everyone should stop worrying like fools.

You could see that the Hawks would have no difficulty holding off the Raptors’ runs and simply were simply going through the motions. As a fan you can object but with this condensed schedule, they went scrimmage mode.

As for the “Al”, “no Al” debate, this is a complete nonsense.

I am very critical of Al’s decaying spunk (which seemed to improve a bit this season since he realised that he is no longer getting as many open looks as last year and was going to the block with a bit more decision) but we are clearly a better team WITH AL.

Nonetheless, that does not mean that we cannot get by without him and I think that Sund does not need to overreact.

Let’s wait for the recovery prognosis following today’s surgery to know where we are for the playoffs (by the way, I have absolutely no doubt that we will be in playoffs and under no circumstance lower than the #6 seed).

CHI, MIA, ORL, PHI and IND are the only teams able to finish with a better record than us.

BOS are washed up and have no bench.
NYK are fools’ gold and their only hope is to fire D’Antoni TODAY.
The rest are sub-sub-sub-par with no chance of worrying us.

The key for our season will be Teague and Josh’s consistency.

The Minny game showed that a couple of bad calls from the refs still completely derail Josh.

His shot was not falling but his 1st quarter was ALL HUSTLE and then he went into a funk due to several horrible calls.

I am worried that against better opposition we will continue to be diced by the refs and Josh will not gather himself and continue to disappoint (usually on national TV).

Hence, this game against POR will be a good test since:

a) Aldridge is balling and is a bad match up for Josh;
b) Wallace poses HORRIBLE match up problems (V-Rad can’t defend him and Marvin… well, looks Marvin again);
c) The mummys (Thomas and Camby – which hopefully may remain inactive) are manning the middle by committee well on rebounding, with a good combo of length (which we lack) and girth/toughness (which we have but may not be enough since Ivan is undersized);
d) Batum is on fire and we have a lot of problems when a good 6-man comes in (see games in the past in which Maggette, Nate, … destroyed us);
e) Jamal may be motivated against us (although he is shooting like crap right now).
f) Felton is always a tricky match up for us as well.

If we don’t bring our defensive A game, we will be in major trouble from tip off. Sincerely, I am seeing a remake of the HOU game: we start slow and play catch up without being able to recover from the deficit.

Another factor is Teague finishing at the rim. If Camby does not play, we should be a bit better, but Teague is still finding his comfort zone at the glass and we need him to keep Felton in check and deep into his paint with his penetration.

My prediction: POR by 8

Mark Stein’s power ranking:

“ATL, rank 12th (last week, 6th): a shame it happened so soon after those big wins over Miami and Chicago, but there’s no getting around it: Atlanta just lost the guy on the roster closest to irreplaceable, because Al Horford ranks not only as its best big man but also its smartest player”.

Who I may be close to reality: the press, coaches, and players that recognize Horford’s value or some bloggers here who said otherwise?

vava74

January 17th, 2012
9:18 am

Chu,

Al is a very good player, but he is not as great as the press seems to want to make of him.

He is a disciplined and smart player who is versatile and brings very good effort (although less than before) and seldom takes bad shots or makes bad decisions (he is, however, a very slow decision maker, specially when looking to score).

He lacks, however, the physical tools and the offensive moves to work as a trully effective PF as he would prefer to.

So that “unwillingness” to acknowledge that his move to the PF is detrimental to the maximisation of his ability is a negative point.

This is specially true since he stopped being focused in banging and he has been looking to be a finesse player but without the skill set.

This year, he was already having trouble finding the clean looks from the elbow and the baseline that allowed him to score more last year (even against Cs).

Unfortunately for us, Al is a smart enough kid and was already – IMO – trying to get to work a bit more down low but now, with this injury which may have a negative effect on him psychologically, he will again be less inclined to bang.

with al out there are fewer people to defer to or “trust” so it takes that pressure off and it works against poor teams. with al out there are fewer options especially when both jj and josh throw bricks and refuse to take it inside. we will suffer with al gone to some degree as we struggled against two pretty worthless teams, but i add we have done that with al in there when josh and jj do the same thing. though al may be a stabilizer, josh is still the straw for this team and jj along for the ride. if josh behaves and survives physically and mentally, then we do all right, a bit above .500.

One trade thought on McGrady. Dallas will need to dump one of Marion or Haywood (amnesty the other), and possibly move Roddy Beaubois & Dominique Jones as well, in order to make their run at free agents Deron Williams & Dwight Howard this summer.

I would send McGrady & a 2nd round pick (no cap hold) for Roddy B. Beaubois’s stock is down, and the Deron Williams signing looks likely. They have Jason Kidd & Jason Terry to handle the point this year. Beaubois is a Jeff Teague-clone. A year ago, Beaubois would have been considered the better prospect.

I would also consider a straight-up trade for Dominique Jones as well. Hawks were high on him coming out of college. He had better measureables than John Wall. Combo guard that defends & attacks the basket. That’s not a role that we desperately need right now, but if McGrady stays “iffy” then it might not be a bad move for the future. He hasn’t shown the ability to shoot well enough for that Dallas team.

JJ is now 16th in scoring. Josh is 26th.

Josh is on his way to averaging a double double. 17 and 9.2 right now, but he’s been rebounding like a beast. Josh is 9th in blocks.

Teague is 6th in steals.

If we can get the Marvin from the first 3 or 4 games of the season back, that would help. Looks like the old Marvin has been reappearing way too much.

I’m sure by the 50th game or so, things will shake up. Boston and New York can’t be this bad can they? Shumpert is starting at the Point for them – phenomenal athlete, but a point?

It looks like Horford’s injury, and our 3gm winning streak, has given HORFOR HATERS another excuse to display their shameless ignorance and/or stupidity. We’ve managed to win without him because we have a solid bench that has so far been able to take up the slack. The question remains, is their inability to comprehend these facts a result of their IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY, or BOTH? In previous seasons we only had Zaza, and OFF only players like Flip Murray or JCrawford, to produce off our bench. We’ve definitely had nothing equaling the all around play of WGreen, VRad, TMac, Pargo, and IJohnson, especially when it comes to rebounding, versatility, depth, and especially DEF.

Judging from their responses, it looks like the majority of Buck fans would jump at the chance to take Horford and get rid of Bogut, straight up. They realize something that our HORFORD HATING and BOGUT LOVING Hawk fans are too blinded by their self serving agendas to realize. And that’s the fact that Bogut is a total waste when he’s sitting on the bench in a suit and tie nursing a hang nail, which he does far too often.

Do any of you BOGUT LOVERS remember when the Bucks took us to 7gms, without Bogut, in that playoff series against us? Did that mean they were a much better team without him? When you consider how well the team played, with KThomas at center instead Bogut, would you say that meant he was a better center than Bogut? Stop being a bunch of ABSOLUTE DUMBA$$ES and start dealing with reality for a change. Try it, if you can, you might learn to like it. If not, STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.

Don’t have a lot of love for Al since his wish to go to PF, but its not my body that is taking the pounding. But I sure would have to consider moving him if he isn’t satisfied with his role where he fits best on this team.
As for Bogut, every time his name is mentioned, Marvin always comes to mind…..so looking back, the PGs in that draft came out as the best of the crop….similar to ‘09. Being honest, I don’t see anything in Milwaukee that makes me think there is value in any of their players. I don’t think any Milwaukee player makes our team any better (well, maybe the rookie Harris). Bogut is fool’s gold IMO. He is too high on the salary list, like Marvin is. And I would never do Al for Bogut.

I’m not an Al lover or hater; I just want us to be more formidable in the playoffs, and Al doesn’t take us to that level. I would think we could find someone defensively who would contribute more against the Bulls, Heat and Orlando. Give me a vocal type player like a Tyson Chandler to put this team in competing mode.

IMO, the more we do without Al, the more Josh is favored here over Al if it comes to needing to move one of them.

I saw Najeh post the stats this morning. To expand on it, this is what the Hawks main centers have done in 3 games since Al went down (ZaZa and Twin combined).

1) Charlotte; 35 mins, 10 points, 10 rebs (W)
2) Minny; 34 mins, 8 points, 8 rebs (W)
3) Toronto; 31 mins, 6 points, 4 rebs (W)

“The lane is open to the basket and will be open all day long”….doesn’t sound like a lot to be hopeful for on the backline.

It’s time to get Rasheed Wallace back to the ATL. Another big with length and experience. His interior defense and low post moves may be a key during the tough month of Feb. I know his basketball shape might be the issue, but we won’t need him to be a 25 minute man. If he buys into the system and has the same positive pro attitude he had when he last worn the Hawks uniform, it fills a current need without going above the tax level ( we will need to cut one or two of our end of the bench players). Not a big gamble if he’s not asking for to much, we still have all our other bigs. Could be another low cost vet that brings more toughness to the Hawks, especially the starting five. With Ivan,TMac and the “we come to work bench”, the Hawks could be the dangerous team no one wants to face come playoffs.

KevinM Bogut is supposed to carry the offense and defense in Milwaukee. Now would his role be any different here?

We can beat a good deal of teams without a center but come certain playoff teams you want Bogut on your team.

Horford not even playing center come playoffs. We routinely have to change lineups. I have to think that starting Bogut is better than starting Jason Collins.

In here we would shoot shots and Bogut would rarely to never get plays run for him.

His job would be to get 10 points off of offensive boards and junkyard dog buckets. Look at his 22% usage. 22% of offense goes thru him. I’m not saying he’s that good it just shows MIL has no other options and thats why he should be available. He’s overburdened.

He is not that good to shoot so many shots of an offense and overburdened in MIL.

Go from 22% offense to what 16%. Less touches and how many of thatusage would now come from offensive boards?

His offensive rating goes up with less shots. And his defense rating is still elite anchoring MIL at 99. Josh Smith is our anchor at 94 defensive rating.

If we combined those 2 leaders…

We want Bogut for defense and offensive boards. Those “plus” plays. Iso Bogut is not what we’re looking for. Not even Iso Leuer. Everything off of movement screen and rolls and eating the offensive glass.

Can you imagine if Iso Horford carried 22% of an offense? That team would suck too.

Bogut’s #s are down but that should only work in our favor. As long as he is one iota better than Pachulia and then Leuer can stretch the floor I would take them over Al anyday.

Bogut followed up by Pachulia? — No center would ever want to come here again. Then we can go small with Leuer at center. Ala what we had with Horford

As long as Bogut keeps failing to be a superstar for MIL, then MIL should become jaded to keeping him. And we can nab him. We dont need a superstar. Just an anchor and junkyard dog.

He only yells at teammates in huddles. Never on the court. He knows he’s not the one to be talking. He has no set role. And just gets kudos for being a nice guy.

Give me Josh and a whole bunch of guys with a chip on their shoulder. Hell yeah. Go down the list and everyone will play with a chip.

Teague – they say my brothers better, benched for Bibby, benched for Hinrich
Joe Johnson – give me the ball. I’m eating but I need to earn my money. Dont forget about me I will burn yo azz for 30 points with touches.
Josh Smith – don’t win, don’t eat, hometown know he’s gonna fight for your ass. Undersized. From bust #17 hometown pick. Thought they was doing a bust a favor pick to star player.
Jon Leuer – white guy from Wisconsin bustin azz in a black man’s game and I was picked #40 despite half the forwards at his position being shorter and weaker. 7′0 shooting PF? Victim of Stereotypes. You bet your ass he;s a fighting junkyard dog. #40 pick to starter. Tell me what Marvin does that he can’t do. Bring ball up stop at 3 point line swing ball or feed post and wait for 3.
Junkyard dog.
Bogut- he anchors defense, he’s the boss on defense. He’ll call your azz out and save your hide on defense taking charges blocks and on offense he’ll offensive layup your fucced up jumper that you missed.

Willie Green – don’t win, don’t eat
Pargo – don’t win, don’t eat
MArvin Williams – junkyard duck? Only coward I see in the group. Be a Bruce Bowen type.
Radmanovic – he’s from Serbia. I hear its cold there. Srsly, Space Cadet lost some weight and he’s atoning for sins past. There’s hope for Marvin, off the bench.
McGrady – you know what would happen if this guy fux up a contending team in the playoffs. HELL NO, With a team of Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Andrew Bogut you know this guy is playing his ass off. If he lost with that team. lol.
PAchulia – he’s from a war torn country, gets benched for nice guys cuz they got college degrees, white guy, Chip on shoulder, grit.
Jason Collins- chip on shoulder, Our Kurt Thomas. People wonder why he’s even in the league. But he can still contribute.

Hinrich – he is jaded about losing his job to Teague but he can’t sabotage us. Chip on his shoulder. He’s playing for his next contract. Now if he plays his ass off and we win the title he can only get more money and up his value on the free market.

jettisoned – Horford: 3rd overall pick. Started right away. All Star in 2 seasons.

Mentality: Junkyard chip on shoulder or Penthouse privileged?

“Well obviously I’m a four”. Nuff said about the Hawks being a bunch of nice guys, Only one player does not play with a chip on his shoulder.

Wallace, who retired after 15 seasons in 2010, has been working out and probing some close league friends about possible destinations to sign for the rest of the season, sources said.
At 6-foot-11, Wallace, 37, had been one of the most versatile and talented power forwards of his era. One league source who has talked with Wallace recently describes him as “serious” about a return to the NBA this season. Nevertheless, no teams contacted by Yahoo! Sports reported that they had any contact with Wallace, or his representative.

“In a limited role, several GMs told Yahoo! they still believe his scoring and defending ability would probably be better than anyone else available to them.” Teams like Atlanta and Golden State just lost bigs for the next few months, and Wallace could potentially step right in and contribute.

What I asked is what did Toronto have that Collins needed to start? Shoot, I don’t see anything that warrants Collins being a starter…if it works for you, no prob. I see Ivan as a much bigger contributor than he and Zaza combined, but Ivan does lose in fouls huh?
Hey, LD and Sund are the only guys keeping Collins employed…I’m convinced of it.

Yo I’m gonna make a video of Marvin every time he touched the ball from yesterday.

I missed the whole game but I know he started and I just started watching and in 10 seconds I’ve seen him A) not even square up in time to shoot so he passes. His loadup time is too long for his height. Too slow and average height means his shooting pocket is easily bothered.

Then he misses a rebound. Imagine if he was taller and quicker he’d get that board. Taller and had a quicker loadup time and quicker shot release. Thats Leuer! Its so simple.

But I think I need to show everyone what Marvin’s touches look like. He is no threat at all. And starting a tall stretch PF in combination with Marvin off the bench has made too much sense for years now.

While it is fairly obvious that a guy who has been with the team for almost 8 years would be able to “say the right things” because the sacred core has been together for about that long (regeretably), Josh’s statement assumes that if a newbie had been hired in July, 2010, that he would not have learned “the right thing to say” in the past 18 months. IMO, too early to hand out kudos because the Hawks have defeated sub-par teams since Horford went down. If Bargnani is out for an extended period of time, my guess is that Casey will find a way despite knowing that group of players for less than 9 months.

He probably won’t submit his papers until he has a handshake agreeemnt and he probably won’t get a handshake agreement until a GM knows for sure that he can play 20 minutes a game in consecutive games (due to the compressed schedule). Very tough game tomorrow night, because of the matchups. We don’t have any really favorable match-ups on offensive and several guys to worry about on defensive. It might be prudent to go zone often to cut down on the penetration from Wallace and Matthews, but that opens up rebound lanes for Camby. Hopefully our bench brings it, because that might be our only advantage. (even though they have Crawford) Josh and Marvin are going to have their hands full with Aldridge and Wallace, so Joe better bring his J with him. We’re going to need his scoring!

Another reason why Sund/LD may have wanted to wait a minute before bringing in a big is to allow the other two captains some time to step up. I don’t care which one of the 3 were to go down, this team has had significant leadership issues in the past and a scenario that demands that 2 of the 3 step up can only be good for the front office. If they do step up, then when you add the serviceable backfill, then you hope that the team continues to push forward. And if the two fail to step up (in the absence of the third) then you have that important data point to help shape the future of the team. With the soft schedule that was immediately in front of them, showing some restraint to watch how the two captains responded offered fairly little risk. Of course, that assumes that before February (when the schedule is no longer soft), Sund comes through with another big body to help out.

Why should it take a captain to go down for the 2 others to step up? Shouldn’t they have enough pride to bring it every night?

Apparently not, but if this team goes into a tailspin, and none of us know what team shows up on any given night, then Sund will be more pressed to make a deal and it definitely won’t be one where he can trump another GM. The longer he waits IMO, the worse off this team is.

I like their efforts without Al, but it still is not enough come playoff time.

According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte of Observer, the versatile Boris Diaw has been put on the chopping block by the Charlotte Bobcats.

The Bobcats are unwilling to take on a bad contract in return, and they may not have to, given Diaw’s contract is up at the end of this season. It doesn’t hurt they he can play all five positions either.

The Phoenix Suns could come into play for the 29-year-old, as may the Atlanta Hawks in their search to add some size to fill the void left by Al Horford.

Diaw’s conditioning is of major concern, but he is unselfish and runs the threat of exploding on the offensive end at any time.

He is an efficient long range shooter, but can also put up some points fro the inside. Given Charlotte’s current direction, Diaw’s greatest contribution will come from being moved elsewhere.

Prediction: The Bobcats move Diaw; potential destinations include Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks.

Deron Williams of New Jersey Nets
Christian Petersen/Getty Images According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the New Jersey Nets are prepared to shop Deron Williams should Dwight Howard land with the Los Angeles Lakers before the deadline.

Williams’ status should be a major concern for the team, but New Jersey should take solace in knowing that while the Lakers remain a potential trade destination for Howard, the likelihood of him landing there is thinning by the day.

Andrew Bynum’s emergence has put Los Angeles in the driver’s seat with regard to Howard. They are no longer desperate or obligated to give up both the 24-year-old center and Pau Gasol.

Even though Bynum is arguably the most dominant big man the Orlando Magic will get in return for Howard, they are likely to want more, which the Lakers don’t have, nor are they willing to give up.

The Nets are more likely to get burned by Williams over the summer than they are to move him before the deadline.

Prediction: Nets hold on to Williams.

Dwight Howard of Orlando Magic
Brett Deering/Getty Images Dwight Howard has a list of preferred destinations, one that he has expanded to include the Los Angeles Clippers and has already requested a trade to the New Jersey Nets. All signs point to him leaving the Orlando Magic, the only question is when.

The Magic can hold out hope that Howard re-signs with the team this summer, but the risk is not worth taking. As impressive as Orlando as been, this core is not championship material, and the organization is restricted in what it can do to reach such a level.

Should the Magic allow free agency to decide Howard’s fate, there is a possibility he decides to sign with a team like the Dallas Mavericks even though Orlando can offer him more.

In such a scenario, the Magic would feel obligated to engage in a sign-and-trade so they don’t walk away empty handed. At that point though, any team’s offer won’t include any substantial assets as the center would have already shown a willingness to ink a deal.

If Orlando wants to maximize the return they get on Howard’s inevitable departure, he will be shipped out by the deadline.

Prediction: Magic deal Howard; potential destinations include Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and New Jersey Nets.

Don’t bring that Diaw bullsh*t in here. We need size and rebounding not another guy who shoots 10-15 feet jumpers and is soft and undersized.

From whiny PG to fat lazy center. How this guy never has knee injuries is beyond me.

“Why should it take a captain to go down for the 2 others to step up? Shouldn’t they have enough pride to bring it every night?”

Horford takes us out of our game. Joe Johnson shoots and bricks, Zaza keeps it alive. Tip out. Joe shoots again and hits. Zaza does not get or ask for many touches.

Josh Smith plays inside and out and point forward.

What is Horford’s role. Same as Josh’s. Their skills overlap and so Smith’s potential is minimized.

Horford is not a good fit for the team. We need Okafor, Pachulia, Bogut, Chandler. Defending rebound and dunk. Keep bricked shots alive. And lay it in.

No one needs a mid range shot. Horford has killed us for so long we’ve been trying to accomodate too many tweeners.

Josh,Horford, Marvin. All redundant flaws (isolation wise). Just go with Smith + shooter (upgrade Vlad) + big defensive center (upgrade Collins/Pachulia). And strengthen the bench,

I dont care that 2 other coaches voted a guy as an All Star center. GMs say Pachulia is the toughest guy on the team. Give me more of that.

Its like Wade and Lebron on the same team. Lebron + Shooters took a team to the Finals. Lebron + slasher is redundant.

Offensive Roles are now defined and proper. A Center without iso moves is supposed to crash and help teammates. Go through the list of what Horford does right and what Smith does right and compare.

Horford: bad iso player, iffy jumper off the dribble. Point forward. Limited range.
Smith: bad iso player, iffy jumper off the dribble. Point forward. Limited range.

What do you come up with? Redundancy. Smith and Al are almost the same player. I like Smith because its hard to find an SF and you can put Smith at SF and find a big rebounding 3 point shooter.
Smith+Big shooter+Big Center

Smith can’t step up splitting his role with Horford. Horf would have no impact averaging 8 and 8. Bogut would. Tyson Chandler would etc.

We need a true center. We need a big shooter to replace Marvin in the corner (Leuer).

I would say Joe is involved but you can’t trade him not because his contract is too big, but because the amnesty is a blessing in disguise anytime he underperforms just snipe that bad contract out and clear up massive space to sign some people and laugh at ASG for still having to pay him for their idiotic mistakes.

Kevin, yes, this season is strange and different likely for most teams. The list of injured players is fairly long and will likely stay that long (with guys not having much time to heal small problems so they balloon into bigger problems). And that likely means that more backend-of-the-bench stories will emerge (like Ivan for the Hawks). I’m not convinced that the early story of the Hawks (i.e., injury to prominent player(s), surprising success from relative unknowns, head coaches find unexpected results from bizarre player rotations, maybe even a fountain of youth story for the previous close-to-dead careers of older vets, etc.) won’t be repeated throughout the league.

With the Celtics struggling to begin the 11-12 season, several teams have inquired about the availability of Paul Pierce.

One Eastern Conference official said, there are “lots of calls asking if [Boston] will blow it up.”

Pierce has two years and $32 million left on his contract through the 13-14 season. Trading Pierce would allow the Celtics to become players in free agency.

I have long been a JaVale McGee proponent.
I have long known of his supposed lack of B-ball IQ.
After this incident JMc was quoted as saying:
* “he would do it again”
* “he was trying to inspire his team”
[Houston immediately went on a 19-6 run]

“With the now 1-12 Wizards trailing by six in the third quarter, JaVale McGee found himself all alone for a breakaway dunk. And what did he choose to do? Throw it off the backboard and oop himself.

Now, McGee made it. But that doesn’t make it any less bonehead. Really, nothing sums up the hapless Wizards more than this play. It’s just immature, stupid and pointless. Points are at a premium for Washington at all times and you can’t risk blowing two easy ones.

I like McGee. I don’t think he’s a total knucklehead. I think he plays hard, tries to get better and wants to win. But he, along with some of his teammates, continue to do dumb things. It’s a culture thing. You can’t continue to think about yourself or highlights. You have to think about the team and what’s most important. If McGee had blown the dunk, that would’ve told you everything you needed to know about the Wizards. Again, he made it and got the two points, but the point remains. As soon as I saw it I thought, “That was so Washington Wizards. They know they’re 1-12, right?”

Remember last season how McGee basically sold his soul to try and get a triple-double? That’s the type of recurring issue you see within a troubled, dysfunctional team. Putting stats and self before team. At some point, you’ve just got to grow up. You can’t continue to waste talent and opportunity. Be a professional. An NBA game isn’t your own personal playground. It’s about the final score. It’s about winning and losing, the latter of which you know plenty about.

And like me, coach Flip Saunders was not impressed or amused by this and actually benched McGee for the final nine minutes of the Wizards’ eventual loss to the Rockets.

“Apparently, if you get a fastbreak and throw it off backboard in the third quarter and you’re 1-11, you’re not supposed to do stuff like that,” McGee said after the game.

Yeah, apparently. The fact you didn’t think about that beforehand really says it all.”

Also speaking on that McGee dunk off the backboard it somewhat reminded me of when Josh tried to do the between the legs dunk in the playoffs a few seasons ago. Josh caught a lot of heat from people who didn’t agree with it, and since then has matured a lot. I think McGee has to mature a lot more mentally before anyone takes him or the Wizards more seriously, but respect for John Wall and Flip Saunders for getting on him a little, just like the other Flip did when Josh tried it.

It is going to be near impossible to go find a frontline C to throw in this lineup. We all have hopes like we do during the summer that a major move will be made.
I no longer have the faith that Sund is interested in such a big move.
The Bibby deal is still to-be-determined and I think we have to take on salary to get anything significant.
Now we will see if Gearon is pure owner-speak or he comes out and says we have enough even without Al. I think he better stay under ground because I know a couple of people here that would like to throw something his way the next time he comes out in public.
We can always come up with scenarios, but our current plan using combinations will probably be the norm going forward.

“All Marvin Williams Touches: 1st Quarter (Atlanta vs Toronto MLK Day)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Wzi_IlEQBo

It’s really sad. Playin no defense at all, and horrid on offense. One play Toronta has Calderon checking him. The ball swings to Marv, and he passes it like he has hotcakes in his hand. We continue to trot this guy out there as a starter game after game. My bold prediction is that the Hawks will never make it out of the second round of the playoffs with Marvin Williams starting. It’s like his pick, has cursed this team. No reason that the coach or the owners should still be trotting this guy out as a starter. It’s really becoming comical.

Teague got fouled in the open court and missed a layup. Though it wouldnt count Ivan wanted to go up for a putback dunk. Amir Johnson was holding him and he couldn’t jump high enough. Ivan stares at him. Amir looks the other way. Ivan looks the other way. Walks past him and gives him a little shoulder shiver. I loled

Wow so Marvin did not start nor play the whole 4th quarter. LD went with 6′10 Vlad who did some good things as far as dribble drive and complementing our core (Teague, Joe, Josh). Then followed with Willie Green. Marvin? What does he do? What a schmuck. Good job closing out a bad team LD.

I agree with grandad, Marvin is soft as cupcakes, Diaw is a cupcake but he can pass, rebound, and shoot the 3 ball better than Marvin and will actually post up his smaller opponents. Also if anything he will be able to free up more cap space for us and get Marvin’s 3 year contract out of the way. All for that trade, we lose nothing gain cap space win-win.

His pick did curse the team because we then moved Smith to power forward. For offensive Spacing .

The problem with that is: what good is spacing if the guy can’t get a shot off?
Bad hands + slow shooter = cant get a shot off
His teammates notice this too:
He just cannot finish plays. And these things are wide open. Almost anyone is a triple threat playing off of all this talent to shoot, pass, or dribble. But not Marvin Williams. I mean seriously. What can he do consistently?

I’ve been pushing this trade so hard just to get away from the curse of Marvin Williams. If we are going to add a perimeter player to the core of Jeff,Joe,Josh then the worst perimeter players are guys who don’t do anything but eat possessions.

Hit wide open skip shot threes, get occasional tip ins, help quickness/size on defense. I mean we have to be aggressive for this to be the year we win it all. We can’t play 4 on 5 any longer with Marvin, and before I annoint Jon Leuer the anti-thesis of Marvin Williams.

If Jon Leuer sucked AS BAD as Marvin Williams would you still take him over Marvin on account of…being a 7 foot SF? Height shooting the corner 3. Height shooting in the post…. Calderon really?

It seems Bucks fans are giving up on the season and Bogut should come available. now seeing their offers it seems like Leuer could be had as well.

SMITH.LEUER.BOGUT-Bogut vs anybody would have to be part of a video gm since he can’t stay healthy and on the court often enough to be a factor against anyone. You need to get over this MAN CRUSH you appear to have on Bogut and Leuer, it’s not natural or normal, trust me. That’s about all you seem capable of talking about. Why don’t you spend you time on a Bucks blog, or better still, go to Milwaukee to see him in person and drull. He’ll be the very tall guy sitting at the end of the bench in civilian attire.

Give me anybody that can hit an open jump shot. You guys wonder why Teague can really get to the lane? Besides his quickness, if Vlad is on the floor with Joe, somebody has to make a decision on who to guard. That spacing is huge. Marvin has improved attacking the O-glass, but his awkwardness prevents him from hitting the hole like he should. He’s a $7.5 million/year liability. Nobody is picking up that contract until his last year, maybe.

yoursporthouse dot com,

Agreed. It is funny to see all these trade scenerios involving Marvin on this blog. Nobody in this league wants Marvin Williams. I laughed at the start of the year when he was playing well, and people on this blog were making comments like Rod from College Park is rolling over in his grave…… One thing that I know about Marvin is that he is consistently inconsistent, and injury prone. It never fails. Once he starts playing well, he gets hurt, then when he comes back from injury, he will take about a month to start playing decent again, then he will get hurt again. the cycle repeats itself. Some things you can always depend on, death, taxes, and Marvin Williams in the starting lineup if he is healthy. LOL

Who’s posting trades for Marvin? I said bench his liability self.

12mpg against backups. #s say minimizing minutes this is a good strategy. Just go out there and play hard and he’ll get the same #s but in less time against lower competition.

Minimizing minutes and turning Marvin Williams into a positive (from the bench) is my plan.

Bogut = 20 points 11 rebounds 41 minutes played
Brandon Jennings = 7 points, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 28 minutes played

And people want to blame Bogut. Dude’s a damned fine center.

SLB, the lane to the hoop was open all day for the Sixers….its on the tape!

We don’t need that on our team.

Wouldnt be a bad idea to consider Rasheen Wallace. Could u image Sheen & Vlad in on the 2nd unit busting 3’s left and right with Ivan Johnson in to clean the boards in case for misses?

“I’m just saying guys like Leuer (guys who aren’t going to win you a ton of games by themselves, but are great fits when you get legit talent around them) are the type of guys I would try to sign to reasonable deals.

I agree it’s not a huge priority, just something I would do if possible.”

No I can’t imagine. Only one person can shoot the ball at a time, so what else are they doing to generate an advantage? And Ivan Johnson is all of 6′8 and had 2 rebounds in 20 minutes yesterday.
