Timberwolves at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • I’m not at the game tonight. The AJC’s Chris Viviamore is on the scene.
  • At shootaround today Marvin Williams (ankle) told C-Viv he plans to play tonight. Tracy McGrady (back) is out and is shooting for a Monday return.
  • Larry Drew said the Hawks are in no hurry to make a roster move in the wake of Al Horford’s injury.

T’wolves don’t shoot well and they commit a ton of turnovers. Stay between them and the rim and take your chances.

Heat Fan….Teague should blow by Rubio and this team doesn’t block a lot of shots (only 3.9 per game, 27th in the league). Big night for Teague!!! 25 & 8 is my prediction.

From the previous blog:

So, TS, what exactly IS the significance of D12 having 500 more TO’s than blocks?

Is that OK, or is it mediocrity, as you suggest about Horford?

I really enjoyed reading Ken Strickland contend against the many personalities of T-S this afternoon and vanquish the inanity and insanity one post at a time.

Al Horford plays ever effectively within the active tempo of the Hawks team. There are not many centers that can be that active or athletic for 30 minutes per game. This is one of the many intangibles that are often overlooked by the All-Star voting population, but is very noticible to the coaches around the league.

Al is a very SOLID center (per Sautee on the previous blog) but his ability to be active away from the rim and his pure athleticism make his ROLE on this particualar TEAM to be INVALUABLE.

I think the Hawks will be ok without Al, but are much better with him.

McDyess AFTER he blew out his knee. In his early years McDyess was a BEAST who attacked the rim. Al can’t begin to match that ferocity or athleticism, though he may have more intangibles (tipped passes, hedging, etc.).

It’s laughable that much of the blog treats him like they are disappointed that he’s not a savior. Who ever thought that he WOULD be? He was the third pick in a fairly weak draft. He is what he is.

Like you said, solid.
——-

Man everyone knows he’s solid but he’s been said to have more potential. Yet he is who we thought he was.

Marvin is terribly inconsistent and never delivers. So why do people get mad at Smith when he has to step up?

Why is it never a stupid shot when Al or Marvin flash their inability to anchor an offense by attempting and missing an off-balance, awkward shot or deferring/passing to Smith with the clock winding down?

It seems Smith gets penalized for having talent even though we know he would be better fit with a Kevin Love or Dirk instead of Horford or Marvin at the other forward spot.

You put Dirk or a Love or an Anderson or a tall shooter like that and Smith can thrive inside. Why does he get penalized when Marvin fails to step up like a Love or Ry. Anderson or he has to play at SF with Horford who is no perimeter forward like those 2.

Get Smith some tall guy with the skillset of dare I say a tall white shooter with the balls to defend and step up and not shy away from shots.
Seems there are no more Brian Cardinal’s coming along but a prime 6′9 Cardinal shooting 3s would’ve been great where Marvin has failed.

-Ryan Anderson (can defend and trail and balls to hit big shots)
-Dirk (can defend and trail and balls to hit big shots)
-Kevin Love (can defend and trail and balls to hit big shots)
- Jon Leuer, has his role changed and has not shot 3s because that would be perimeter overload and nobody crashing.

No Channing Frye, dude is terrible on defense. Just turrble. :D

No more pairing him with redundant limited iso players. Bench Marvin.

What does being at the game have to do with it? I asked for his opinion. Marvin has pouted in the past. Does Marvin have skill to dominate backups with more touches and inferior competition.

MC can’t have a respectable opinion on benching Marvin after being around the Hawks for years?

It can be a stupid shot, but it happens so rarely with Horford, that its not a problem. I mean the guy only takes 9 shots a game. Sometimes, one of them may be a bad shot, and ultimately he does shoot 55%+ from the field. Marvin on the other hand, is awful. A guy his size should not be shooting 38% of his 2-pt attempts. That’s Vlad Rad bad, who is 28%. Pachulia is 41%. Those are the 3 least athletic guys on the roster.

Al is a very SOLID center (per Sautee on the previous blog) but his inability to be active close to the rim limits his FTA vs FGA and his inability to hit his outside shot this year and lack of length (Kwame,Joakim level) made him a less than ideal center for this team.

He had other redeeming qualities (ie winning pedigree) but lets not pretend that many other centers have the TALENT to give this team a dominating identity on the defense and in the Painte.

Sautee,

You did read that, but I am sure that the administration knew nothing about it. I was a senior walk-on but ended up being the first guy off the bench. I’m sure the coach just listed a height for me. I was never weighed, measured, or, to my recollection, even asked my height. He just wrote something down. I remember being surprised when I saw it. It was only NAIA. In other words, it was no scandal, but comically untruthful. I remember hearing the players on the Tennessee Tech bench laughing at me when I was guarding the 7′ Babic (but I assure you he felt every elbow I had to give).

My two claims to fame as a player were 1) guarding Showtime Gaffney of the Globetrotters since he was in our conference 2) being the Tennessee-Virginia Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year.

I only played one year of college ball at a very low level but it was a lot of fun.

Kevin Love was the last reserve added to the West All-Star roster last year as the replacement for Yao Ming. He was selected by David Stern, not by the poll of coaches that selected the rest of the West reserves. Thus, he is a borderline All-Star.

Meanwhile the 2012 Josh Smith All Star campaign is looking about as good as the Herman Cain campaign.

Complain all you want about Marvin, but I’ll take 8 and 8 in 19 minutes every game from him – that’s a 16 and 16 game for 38 minutes.

Ivan’s a beast – nothing else to say. He may save the season.

Josh with 4 blocks. Good

Teague with a 20 and 10 against a couple of good PG’s – I’ll take that – too many TO’s though. Rare for him.

Our schedule – The first time we have more than 1 nite off between games is Feb.16-17, we have 2 nites off on a long West Coast road trip. Indy and Miami keep getting the multiple nites off it looks like.

But the last month of the season, we get 3 days off in a row twice. That may help us if we make the playoffs.

A win is a win. Ugly, but I’ll take it.

The bottom line is this was a team, win. and these guys showed fight and no quit grit. It is a much better union that when players dont want to play this position or that position, or dont want to defend here or there.

Chris Daniels and Ivan have been teammates. Excerpts from an article in the Erie Times (he plays for Erie on the DLeague):

“Chris Daniels hasn’t wasted any time re-establishing himself with the Erie BayHawks..

The 7-foot center scored a career-high 32 points Thursday in his second game back with Erie since being waived from the training camp of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Erie (5-9) lost 117-112, but Daniels played with high energy and effort in defeat against, ironically, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, who are owned by the Lakers.

“I want to win,” he said. “At the end of the day, I want to win.”

Daniels shot 11-of-14 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds against the D-Fenders. He’ll look to play at that high level again in today’s 5 p.m. game at Canton (7-5).

“I have no problems scoring 30 every night if I can get the ball that many times,” Daniels, 27, said. “If I don’t have to score 30 and I can score 18 or 19 points, but we still get the win and it’s coming through me and I’m finding open people, I have no problems with that either.”

“The Cavaliers released Goldcamp Dec. 18. Four days later, the Lakers cut Daniels.

“He had a great chance of making the team, I thought,” said 2007 NBA Slam Dunk champ Gerald Green, who was also cut by the Lakers during training camp and is now with the D-Fenders.

“I thought he was a good big,” Green said. “He could pick and pop and shoot the ball a little bit. Skilled guy. Could score. He played good in camp against some really good players in (Andrew) Bynum and (Pau) Gasol.”

Daniels was disappointed, but didn’t hang his head.

“I told (Lakers general manager) Mitch Kupchak I appreciated the offer and bringing me there,” Daniels said. “Of course I was upset, but I wasn’t upset to the point of I couldn’t handle it.”

Although Daniels didn’t make the Lakers, he was happy his friend and former BayHawks power forward Ivan Johnson made Atlanta’s final roster.

Johnson was a first-team all-D-League pick and led Erie to the 2011 D-League playoffs. He and Daniels each are from San Antonio.

“I was so glad he got that opportunity,” Daniels said. “I know his background a little bit. He deserved it. He worked hard for it. He worked his butt off for it. I tell him that every day he deserves to be where he’s at and to keep pushing.”

He and Sloan were also teammates at Erie.

“Already intense, a slimmer Daniels seems to be playing with even more zeal. He’s finishing more interior baskets with dunks instead of lay-ins and expressing himself vocally on the floor.

“The one thing he has to understand is, how (he) can implement those every day and not just on days he might be feeling good,” Houston said. “He’s talked about that. He’s in good shape. He plans on staying in good shape, but I think for him it’s about habits — keeping habits intact on and off the court.”

Daniels said he learned quite a bit on how to play defense from the Lakers and picked up few things from Gasol and Bynum.

“(Gasol) has a soft touch around the rim,” Daniels said. “Just his knowledge of the game. Where to pick up the ball as far as crowding your man on defense.

” … (Bynum) was basically telling me how what type of defense he doesn’t like to play against. What kind of move should I make against a smaller person.”

Daniels also kept an eye on superstar Kobe Bryant and noticed his splendid footwork.

“He stays ahead of the game,” Daniels said. “While everybody is thinking probably one step ahead, he’s thinking three or four steps ahead.”

Got to learn from Gasol and Bynum. Slim and energized. Green said he had a great camp. Already knows Sloan and Ivan. Hmmm…

It’s a good thing that we’ve had an easy schedule for a bit following Al’s injury (our next game is against another sub-.500 team at home). It gives the team a bit of time to get used to playing with some new lineups without Al before we have to actually face a winning team. The chemistry with the second unit looked great tonight. That was one big positive.

I’d really like to have seen what our team would be like at full strength this season (with both Al and Kirk healthy). I guess we’ll have to settle with what we have. At least Kirk will be back soon, and I’m guessing T-Mac will be also. If everything goes well and we manage to make the playoffs this year, maybe we’ll get to see what our full team looks like in the post season. I’m not sure if Al will even be back by then though, and if he is, he’ll probably be rusty.

I just hate it when you never get to see what your team is truly capable of due to injuries. What the Blazers have had to deal with over the last few years has been terrible, luckily, our situations is not as bad as their situation has been. I’m assuming we will still be above .500 this season, beating most of the sub-.500 teams and a some of the winning teams. I don’t think we’ll have a top 4 seed, but with the way this conference is (week beyond the top seeds), I think we have a great chance of getting between a 5 and 8 seed still, even if our record is barely over .500 at the end of the season. New York is insanely overrated, and without Horford, there are still only about 4 teams that are legitimately better than us (Miami, Chicago, Orlando, and Indiana). Philly may be better, but I can’t really judge them yet, as they have had a pretty easy schedule so far. I’ll be able to learn more about them once they face some quality opponents and not just the Wizards.

I think we can still have an edge on New York and Boston. Boston looks like Father Time is finally imposing his will on them, and New York just looks like a lot of talent and a mess of a system. Most of the other teams in our conference which I did not mention are not a significant threat to make the playoffs. If we can at least stay in the mix with Philly, NY, and Boston, we should make the playoffs without too much of a problem. I don’t expect our record to be very impressive though, but maybe I’m wrong.

Ron I dont think we missed a beat. Zaza did a double double in Al’s place last night and Ivan did a double double tonight. Sorry if this hurts your feelings but Al who? 12 pts 8 rebounds is not that hard if you consider more than 50 people do it every night in the nba. Al’s a nice guy and that was a nice picture of his wife’s camel toe that was posted.

But Zaza and or Ivan do better than Al because they not only rebound and put up 10/12 pts. they play defense and fight. We probably would have lost this game if Al plays because he would not have played defense down the stretch and would have been on the perimeter rather than the wing. .

Hey, why was time talking about a player who is not a factor. Maybe next year, or the year after he will be a better player. That injury is not easy to come back from. It may be years if ever that he can get back to 12/10 level.

The HAWKS pulled one out tonight because of good play from the 2nd unit. The starters should review the game film and find out what unselfish play and hustle looks like. Good comeback win against a team that we should have walked over. I don’t know if that is a good sign or bad one. Toronto is next, a game we should win but who knows. When is LD going to start getting credit for this teams success. Every game he is showing how bad a coach Woody was…

Great Job LD..

The Hawks are good enough to make the playoffs because teams like New York, Boston and Philadelphia aren’t as good as people think.

The Hawks aren’t going to make a trade because they don’t have the assets and they’re not going to take a bad contract for the sake of getting a better than average big man. I wouldn’t be surprised If they cut both Sloan & Stackhouse so that they can sign a Dan Gadzuric or Fesenko ..both dudes are big and should help on the boards.

The Key to the Hawks success is Tracy McGrady & Kirk Hinrich.

Tracy has being playing a passive aggressive role for the Hawks not pressing or really looking for his offense and he’s looking to set guys up and get them in the flow. I’m curous to see what he can do when Larry Drew gives him more minutes and a green light to play his game.

The health of Hinrich will also play a role because he’s a decent shooter and he can play lock down defense at either guard spot.

Just arrived – had to watch the game on tape.

How come Kaman & Okafor were going head to head with Love
[in the game prior to our game] I think / thought Love was / is a [4].
Therefore, since he is a [4] and probably insists on playing the [4]
I reckon he no longer is viable.
I imagine since he plays the [4] ……………….
he must be a sissy, & or gay, plus he wears diapers.
One more thing – I’ll bet his daddy told him to [do it].

I sure am glad that Kevin Love don’t play for the Hawks.

You know, we get TMac and Hinrich back, maybe get Przybilla to give us 10-15 minutes per night, we could still be in good shape with this team. Green, Vlad, Ivan, those guys been playin’ some hoop lately off the bench.

Also, nice move by the Hawks to have Hinrich signing autographs before the game in the Team Gear store.

I will say they at least appear to be trying to make the game day atmosphere a little better this year. One thing I just don’t understand is so many people arriving almost at halftime. I was in section 106 and at the end of the first quarter, there were maybe 50 people in the whole section and about another 100 came in during the 2nd quarter. Those are $200 seats. If I’m there (which I was fortunately enough to be tonight), by God, I’m there for every last second!

My biggest kudo to Drew, other than piecing the bench together nicely for the comeback, was benching Smith as long as he did after yet another series of bricks, including missing all his foul shots. That guy has about lost me as a fan.

LD is doing a Good Job..

The Hawks play better DEFENSE.
Better OFFENSE.
The team has an Offensive and defensive plan.
He has put together a BENCH…and uses them.
He makes adjustments at the half.
He rides the hot player.
The team is tougher Mentally…

Since this core has been together – they would have lost tonite’s game

We must begin to realize that LD can coach.
How good LD becomes long haul – who knows ?
However, right now it’s easily discernable that he is growing [as a coach].

That may be true sir, but lets not talk about Al. Hes messed this team up for the last time. Hes not playing now. Lets focus on winning with the squad we have, which may be better because they are more willing to do what ever it takes to win, and not whine about playing their favorite position. Imagine if Ivan whined and said Hey, Im a forward not a center I dont want to play unless you put me where I want to play, dont you know that an attitude like that will cause issues in the locker room?

Management seriously has to look at the option that if either Deron or Dwight are on FA market come that time, we should amnesty Joe and look to bring in one of those guys. Our pick can be used on a young SG, there are a lot in this draft who show promise Beal, Rivers, D. Lamb, Hardaway Jr, Ross, Barton.

Shouldn’t be as quick to make a move yet, amnesty is our trump card if either of those guys falls through the cracks.

Terrible offense down the stretch again. WTF was JJ thinking by going iso then passing to Josh for a 3? Are they trying to lose the game?! Bailed out big time by Ivan scoring the last 4 points. I have zero confidence in this team offensively down the stretch. They showed it against Bulls and Heat and now T-Wolves. Cant see them winning a 7 game series with this offense if the games are tight.

So in the first two post-Al games, the Hawks blow out a horrible team and squeak by a below average team. They get another bad team on Monday. I am interested to see how well they do in Jamal’s return on Wednesday though. They showed a lot of heart in coming back to win this one (well, Ivan did, at least) but I’m still not convinced they can hang with good teams with the big man rotation as it is right now. I’d still gladly do Kirk + Zaza for Kaman in a heartbeat.

gwinett last night was the worst trafficever gettimg to the game. there was a gridlock coming and going because of other events at the ga dome. they had warned folks about it before the weekend but it doesnt help. parking was limited and cars going no where as far out as ivan allen and marietta which is i passed walking in from a lucky spot i got at least three quarters a mile away. it was so frustrating cops were yelling back at folks complaining about the lack if movement.

yes, atl fans are always late especially the area you sat last night but there were extenuating circumstances. it was also a pretty weak crowd period for a weekend but twolves were a factor there. too bad because love is really good and rubio a weak maravich imposter and fun to watch.

bigman needed…don’t try to kill my Hinrich & Marvin for Okur & Morrow trade.

Nets are trying to play Okur starter minutes (30+). That’s crazy. One interesting fact though, Jefferson only had 3 defensive rebounds for the game. He was too busy standing by Okur at the 3 pt line. In stretches, he can neutralize the opposing center by drawing him out of the paint.

The best parts of my trade though: No more Marvin. Add 3 pt specialist Morrow. Clear an extra $4.2M in cap space for next year. Adding the 7 ft 3 pt shooting Okur is just a bonus. Gives us another look to throw at teams.

Wow. T.S. is all over this blog these days. I was trying to read the reactions to the game, but he now comprises about 60% of the total comments It’s a bit crazy already. I gets he’s either really passionate or really bored, or maybe both.

At any rate, I agree with what Ron posted earlier about the Hawks making the playoffs as a 5-8 seed. I think that sounds very realistic. I expect them to defeat most of the losing teams and beat a few winning teams for a record that is between 34-33 to 38-28. I think that seems reasonable without Horford. Watch them so far, it seems like we are going to struggle against capable defensive teams unless we continue to hit outside shots at a high clip. Outside of Josh (who is an okay post-up option at best), and Joe, we have almost no one to throw the ball to in the post, and other than teague scoring on drives and Josh occasionally attacking the basket, we get almost no interior scoring. With that being said, we are going to have to continue to rely heavily on perimeter shots to score, and better defensive teams will make that difficult.

Also, on the defensive end, we now only have one guy to contest shots at the rim on a consistent basis (Josh), and not many good interior defenders. Zaza is okay defensively and Ivan definitely works hard, but he’s at a serious height disadvantage against most big men. With poor interior depth and lack of mobility from some of our big men (e.g. Collins), I expect Josh to pick up fouls at a higher rate and I also expect our team to give up a larger amount of points in the paint. I also expect our defensive ratings to drop from what they’ve been so far in the season.

I still expect us to be at or above average on both ends of the floor, which points to a record that is slightly above the .500 mark. Let’s see if that ends up being correct.

T.S. What bothers me more that any thing is that you have been right on the money about Al. He is my favorite player, so it makes it hard for me to accept the Truth, but I have taken the S e r um. Its true. Al is a very average player nothing spectacular. His 12 pts and 8rbs have been easily replaced by Zaza 10/10 and then a double double from Ivan Johnson. So we really haven’t missed Al because these guys are very capable of exceeding what Al brought to the table. So if I seem obsessed with defense of Al, I apologize. No harm meant, I don’t know who this is that imitating me, Ill take it as flattery, but the truth is you are right on the money.

Now, I going to try and stop talking about Al because he is no longer a factor. I wish him a speedy recovery. I will try not to let my obsession with a player on the injured reserve affect whats really happening on the court today.

One more thing T.S. I guess Ive become pretty obsessed with you as well. I write about you as much as the Hawks. Im not gay or any thing, I dont think. Ive just got some issues I need to work out.

Grandmaster JeJe’s Observations From Last Night’s Game:

1) Can we please put this issue to rest: Marvin is a complete bust and may have the least upside of anyone on this team, perhaps including ZaZa. Don’t let his numbers fool you. Minnesota shrewdly put Wes Johnson on Joe, so that Luke Ridnour could guard Marvin. LUKE RIDNOUR! THE PLAYER CONSISTENTLY REGARDED AS ONE OF THE WORST PLAYERS IN THE NBA. What does Marvin do? Exactly what the Marvin Realists like Rod from College Park and I expect: He stands in the corner, and the few plays he tried to post him up, he had easy finishes at the rim, but lost the ball, ended up on the ground, or if he was lucky, he went to the free throw line. What a draft bust.

2) Kevin Love is amazing. I saw hints of Tim Duncan in his play. His offensive display is near impeccable and he is always going after the ball after every shot. Which leads to my next point…

3) When YOU GET THE REBOUND, IT ISN’T OVER YET. GUYS WILL GO AFTER THE BALL AND TRY STRIP IT. Good Lord, ZaZa.

4) ZaZa was horrendous. Awful defender, terrible rebounding.

5) Where the hell is Tracy McGrady? I saw Horford, with a torn pectoral muscle, at the game. T-Mac doesn’t even go to the games anymore. Do he and LD have a beef? I hope he is ready down the stretch of this season

6******) Our shots just weren’t falling in the 1st half. We had great looks. Vlad had great looks. We had good shots at the rim – they just were rimming out

7) Teague, if you are in the lane and there’s people at the basket, GO UP STRONG AND FINISH THE PLAY/GO TO THE LINE. He becomes too timid sometimes

8) Great free throw shooting. I guess we have been a little more rested lately.

9) Ice Cold Ivan! He is in my opinion one of the 5 best players on the team now with Horford out (Joe, Josh, Teague……?) I didn’t put T-Mac because I have no idea where this guy is anymore. All we ever hear is that he is out for the night. MC, is it possible to get some quotes from him?

10) Ricky Rubio can play. His jumpshot is ugly as hell, but he had TWO perfect behind-the-back passes. Only knock would be he dribbles wayyyy too much. Maybe it’s because players weren’t moving, but there was one play where he just ran Joe around the court for 15 seconds or so.

11) There was one point where (might’ve been after we got 71-53) a timeout was called and Josh was on the bench by himself, maybe with Horford, and Willie Green (might’ve been Sloan – can’t remember) was motioning for Josh to come be a part of the huddle.

12) How can Josh follow up 4-5 masterful games, some of the best basketball we’ve seen in 7 years, with such a shaky performance?

13) ZaZa was letting Pekovic go off on him. Pekovic looks like Kevin Love, but has tats and is probably about 40 pounds heavier

14) Joe in the 4th was on point. He and Ellington were going at it. I had a feeling Love would shoot a 3 at the buzzer

15) Officiating was ehhhh

16) Marvin sux

REV IN TAMPA-isn’t it gratifying to see this young man develop? Teague had 6 turnovers last night and didn’t get discouraged, didn’t look to the sidelines after each miscue, didn’t hang his head down in disgust and didn’t play scared or stop attacking. If Woodson had been on the sidelines, and he made his 1st mistake, he would have reacted like someone pulled the plug and let all of the air out of him. When you consider how often he attacks the basket, it’s amazing that he’s managed to keep his turnovers to a minimum.

He’s also the reason the Hawks are among the NBA leaders in fewest turnovers per gm. He’s also made it very difficult for teams to run hard double teams on JJ, which is why JJ is attacking the basket with so much success, and doing so with far fewer turnovers than in the past. We’re now running more, getting more easy baskets, and scoring in the paint more. Unlike in the past when we had total DEF liabilities at PG, and opposing PG were killing our perimeter and interior DEF, we’re now able to maintain pressure on the the ball.

Have you noticed how well we now switch and recover on DEF? Bibby couldn’t stay in front of anyone, fight over picks or recover, and Jamal wouldn’t try. We’re getting a lot more steals than in the past, which is far more valuable than blocks. Unlike a block, a steal guarantees a change of posssession and lost scoring opportunity. A block doesn’t guarantee a change of possession or a lost scoring opportunty. We’re now tied for 1st place with Orlando and have the 5th best record in the Eastern Conference.

We’re doing just as well, or better, than most of the Eastern Conference teams that have a so called TRUE CENTER.

17) Pargo was pretty bad. He works on free throws and jumpshots before the game (usually the only Hawk) but I don’t know what happened

18) Ivan said he doesn’t know who many players in the NBA are. He has already guarded Bosh and Love, among others… Why not START him over ZaZa and let Z come off the bench?

19) I hope Marvin realizes now he is probably the worst player on this team and the only reason he starts is because he makes a lot of money. He should never be in in the 4th quarter unless 7 players get hurt (God Forbid) and he has to be in.

20) MARVIN COULDN’T DO WORK ON LUKE RIDNOUR. LMAO.

NAJEH-Kaman is a starter for the Hornets, so why would they trade a starter for 2 backups, one of which is on IR? And why would the Hawks trade Hinrich’s $8.1M expiring contract when they’re looking to get below the luxury tax and clear space to possibly sign someone in the off season. The Hawks are actually slightly above the luxury tax limit.

I believe the organization is more interested in making and excelling in the playoffs than excelling in the regular season. They seem content to ride what we currently have until Hinrich’s return, which should be sometime next month, and Horford returns, which should be in time for the playoffs. I believe management is looking ahead at going into the playoffs with a starting lineup of JJ, Teague, Horford, Josh and Marvin. Our bench will be TMac, Zaza, Hinrich, Ivan, Green, VRad, and Twin.

I was alternating watching this game on my phone and listening to this game on Sirius radio on my way to Birmingham last night. LOL @ this game.

First off, Steve Holman is hilarious calling the game on the radio. I haven’t heard him call a game in a while, and I forgot how condescending he can be when the Hawks are playing bad. He sounded like the fans, complaining of all of the jumpers Josh was taking, talking about JJ’s cold shooting, and the lack of energy from the Hawks.

At one point, Josh was 2 – 9 FG, and Holman was absolutely disgusted. Even after he hit his next two jumpers, Holman still pointed out that he was taking too many jumpshots.

He was almost begging for a spark to get us back in the game. And it came as soon as Josh went to the bench in the 3rd quarter.

While Ivan will get all of the accolades ( and he should ), my game ball goes to Larry Drew. It goes to Drew because after he put Collins on Kevin Love ( along with Ivan ), Love was essentially shut down. Once that happened, all the Hawks had to do is start making shots, and they did.

And unlike in the Miami game in which Ivan was playing well, Drew didn’t sit Smith on the bench too long, and get him back in the game.

As for Collins, it’s exactly how he should be used. Only use him against teams that run the majority of their offense through a post player down on the blocks. If Bargnani plays against us tomorrow, there’s no way Collins should see the floor.

From csnchicago.com; This is what the Bulls say, despite having more depth in the frontcourt.

Bulls general manager Gar Forman made it clear before the Bulls first home game on Bulls Pregame Live that the team is actively looking to add a veteran big when the right fit presents itself..

What do the Hawks say, despite losing their starting center for the season?

“There is nothing been discussed [about a roster move],” Drew told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution..

Ken S,

Are you content to finish the season with ZaZa and Twin as our centers? Dont you think the Hawks should add somebody for emergency (especially with the short schedule)? And you do realize Al is out 3-4 months, so there is no guarantee he will return in time for the playoffs.

anyway love played pf with petro and mili at center for collins to guard. they both gave love a lot of attention snd it bothered love. i have now seen ivan shut down two all stars in love and bosh when called upon because those two guys were killing it. the two centers for twolves are perfect for collins as they are statues themselves.

Kaman and Kirk are both expiring and neither one adds any long term salary obligation. Acquiring him wouldn’t hinder the Hawks’ plans to clear cap space at all; in fact it would help, since Zaza is not expiring. The trade helps the Hawks obviously since Kaman would instantly be a legit presence at center (which Zaza is not).

I concede that it is less clear how it helps the Hornets, but let me give you one possibility. The Lakers have a sizable trade exception from the Lamar Odom trade, and they need a point guard who can knock down shots and play D. If the Hornets acquire Kirk, they could then trade him into the Lakers’ trade exception for picks. I can’t confirm this with the trade machine, but the Hawks could even try to make this work as a three-way trade with the Lakers and Hornets.

In any case, Kaman is really playing out of position at power forward for them right now, and getting rid of him would clear up playing time for some of their younger players like Al-Farouq Aminu.

Yes, this takes the Hawks into the luxury tax slightly, but if they are serious about contending, it’s about time they say f-ck the luxury tax.

Bulls will most definitely lose Asik this year in FA, they got him as a HUGE steal in some draft and really has helped them, but he is going to demand big money in the off-season because he is one of the best defending and rebounding bigs in the league also he is unrestricted so he can go wherever he wants.

“I believe the organization is more interested in making and excelling in the playoffs than excelling in the regular season. They seem content to ride what we currently have until Hinrich’s return, which should be sometime next month, and Horford returns, which should be in time for the playoffs. I believe management is looking ahead at going into the playoffs with a starting lineup of JJ, Teague, Horford, Josh and Marvin. Our bench will be TMac, Zaza, Hinrich, Ivan, Green, VRad, and Twin.”

I agree with you on this — I think Sund would ideally just sit on his hands, squeak into the playoffs, and hope Al is ready for Round 1. I think it’s foolish to assume this is going to happen, though. I am not sold on the Hawks’ ability to make the playoffs with this team, and Sund shouldn’t be either. It’s better to be proactive and make sure the team has the personnel to make it there.

Poor Marvin, folk still want him to apologize for accetping his draft position. Maybe in next year’s draft class, someone will politely ask NOT to be taken at a spot that may be too high.

ASG have made it clear that they are about providing an entertaining product to NBA fans in Atlanta, why continue to compare them to owners with different objectives (i.e. winning a championship). If Walmart wants to own the low segment of the marketplace, why compare them to Neiman-Marcus who is interested in dominating a completely different segment of the marketplace?

Don’t frustrate yourselves folk.

If you want to get frustrated, compare the bold and angry comments of Arthur Blank this past week with the hiring of the OC of the worse offensive team in football this past season. Now that is a front-office move worth shouting about. (The only thing dumber that J’ville hiring our middling OC as a head coach was the Falcons hiring their bottom feeder OC as our OC).

Kaman is the starting center for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Zaza is the starting center for a playoff contender. You don’t take two players who have been substantial contributors on winning teams (Any combination of Zaza, Marv and Kirk) and trade them for a player who has only put up numbers on losing teams (Kaman). Remember when the Hawks traded the rights to Pau Gasol for Shareef Abdur-Rahim? He had only ever produced on a losing team. Expecting him to be the go-to guy for the Hawks meant they wouldn’t be playoff contenders for years.

AJ,

I don’t like the Koetter hire at all. Jacksonville’s offense last 4 years;

2008: 20th total offense (15th passing), 24th scoring.
2009: 18th total offense (19th passing), 24th scoring.
2010: 15th total offense (27th passing), 18th scoring.
2011: 32nd total offense (32nd passing), 28th scoring.

But MJD did lead the league in rushing, despite a rookie QB, and not alot of weapons on offense.

And I’m surprised Mike SMith is putting his eggs in the Koetter basket, because if the offense (and team) struggles next year, Smitty and Koetter will both be out of a job.

Najeh,

With Al, I think the Hawks finish between 3rd and 5th in the East. Without Al, and in this compressed schedule, the Hawks might fall to 6th or 7th. If the Hawks fall to the 6th or 7th seed, does anyone have confidence in them winning a first round matchup w/o home court advantage (unless they are playing Orlando)?

Will Al be out 3 months? Or 4 months? And remember, even when Al comes back, how effective will he be? He will be rusty, and in the playoffs, there wont be as much of a break in between games either.

Only team I can realistically see us beating is the Knicks but they won’t finish nearly high enough for us to play them.

Josh Smith is too soft to play the power forward. Mesomorphic body and only 6′8. Watching the game right now and like Bosh , K-Love pushed the smaller guy Josh to the perimeter.

This time when pushed out of the box, Smith was pushed so off balance he went to the opposite side of the court and was stripped by Rubio on the perimeter.

I’ve seen Smith post up some tall guys but at times he’s just to small to go toe to toe with certain players.

I’ve seen him post up Joakim but it seems the wiry longer Bosh gave him trouble and the compact sturdy car sized PFs like KLove will give him problems.

“Kaman is the starting center for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Zaza is the starting center for a playoff contender.”

Deron Williams is the starting point guard for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Derek Fisher is the starting point guard for a playoff contender. What’s your point?

We both know Zaza is only the starting center right now because Al is injured. Qualifying Zaza as a “starting center for a playoff contender” is idiotic. He has started for a grand total of two games. The last time Zaza started a full season for this team, they won 30 games and went to the lottery.

In any case, Kaman is starting out of position at power forward for the Hornets. Okafor is their starting center.

“You don’t take two players who have been substantial contributors on winning teams (Any combination of Zaza, Marv and Kirk) and trade them for a player who has only put up numbers on losing teams (Kaman).”
“Remember when the Hawks traded the rights to Pau Gasol for Shareef Abdur-Rahim? He had only ever produced on a losing team.”

Since you bring up Pau Gasol, you realize he never won a playoff game before the Lakers traded for him, right? He was the very definition of a player who put up big numbers on losing teams, and yet he elevated the Lakers from a borderline playoff team to a championship team.

Gasol isn’t the only one. There are plenty of players who spent years putting up big numbers on bad teams before going to a good team and contributing for them. Antawn Jamison spent years on terrible teams before going to the playoff contending Mavs and winning 6th man of the year. Zach Randolph spent years as a malcontent on lottery teams before going to Memphis and carrying them to the second round. Jason Kidd’s Mavs were one of the worst teams in the league, but the Suns traded for him and he got them to the playoffs, and the Nets then traded for him and he got them to the Finals.

I could go on and on but I am too lazy to look up more examples. The point is, it’s not like every productive player on a bad team is incapable of producing on a good team. Do you think Kevin Love wouldn’t contribute to a contender? Because so far in his career his winning percentage is around .300.

As far as the three Hawks you mentioned, evidently your definition of “substantial contributor” is very different from mine. Kirk isn’t a rotation player for this team right now. The Hawks have gotten off to a 9-4 start without Kirk in the rotation. He hasn’t “substantially contributed” to anything during his Hawks tenure other than holding Jeff Teague back from the starting point guard position that rightfully should have been his. Kirk is a good rotation player when healthy, but the Hawks have won without him and continue to win without him. He is expendable.

As for Zaza… well, it’s funny to me that you criticize Kaman for being replaced by the supposedly Kwame-like DeAndre Jordan, when in many ways Kwame is almost identical statistically to Zaza.

Career turnover percentage: Zaza 16.9%, Kwame 16.7%
Career true shooting percentage: Zaza 53.9%, Kwame 52.4%
Career effective field goal percentage: Zaza 46%, Kwame 49.2%
Career rebound percentage: Zaza 15.6%, Kwame 14.5%
Career block percentage: Zaza 1.4%, Kwame 2.1%

DeAndre Jordan and Chris Kaman are both better than both Zaza and Kwame in most of those categories mentioned, and unlike Zaza, Kaman has amassed those numbers as a starter and despite being miscast as a primary offensive option for most of his career. If Kaman played the majority of his minutes against backups and wasn’t a go-to offensive option for most of his career like Zaza, presumably his efficiency numbers would be higher.

“Expecting him to be the go-to guy for the Hawks meant they wouldn’t be playoff contenders for years.”

But there’s the difference. I am not expecting Kaman to be a go-to guy for the Hawks. Sh-t, even Al Horford isn’t a go-to guy for the Hawks. In fact, one of the reasons Kaman’s efficiency numbers for his career are not that great is because too often he has been a go-to guy for the Clippers, which he doesn’t have the skill set to be.

Here, he’d be at best the 4th option on offense. His primary responsibilities would be rebounding and blocking shots, and he has done both better than Zaza over the course of his career. All I expect with a Kirk+Zaza for Kaman trade is that Kaman will be more reliable on offense and better on defense than Zaza, and I have no doubt he can do this based on his career track record.

Kirk + Zaza for Kaman would leave the Hawks with about $56 million in committed salary next year, to Joe, Josh, Al, Teague, and Marvin.

Kirk + Zaza for Okafor would leave the Hawks with about $69 million in committed salary next year, to Joe, Josh, Al, Teague, Marvin, and Okafor.

Marvin + Zaza for Okafor would leave the Hawks with about $61 million in committed salary next year, to Joe, Josh, Al, Teague, and Okafor.

The luxury tax line is $70 million this year. I don’t know exactly how the luxury tax operates in future years under the new CBA, but I think it’s safe to assume the threshold isn’t going to rise by very much. So a Kirk + Zaza for Okafor trade would mean the Hawks are bumping up against the tax line with only six players under contract, which almost certainly means they would have to dump someone’s salary before next season if they acquire Okafor.

So it’s either gotta be Marvin + Zaza for Okafor or Kirk + Zaza for Kaman. I personally think Kirk is more expendable this year than Marvin is, so short term the Kaman trade is better. For all of Marvin’s faults, he is a significantly better man to man defender than Vlad, and not having him would hurt against teams like Miami with good SG and SF depth. Kirk on the other hand hasn’t even played this year and shouldn’t ever start for this team with Teague having cemented the PG position.

But if the Hawks could find the SF equivalent of Ivan Johnson somewhere in the D-League, I’d be happy with Marvin + Zaza for Okafor too. I am just wary of proceeding with this season with nobody at the SF position who can even play average man to man defense.

That’s not good enough to trade for especially when Marvin Williams averages 10 & 6 in less minutes. Zaza Pachulia averages 9 & 10 in 3 games as a starter not to mention he’s bigger than both of those “centers” you want to bring in here.

The question with Marvin is if his rebounding rate “fools gold”, or is it legit ( since his back is now fixed ). Marvin is much more active and makes more of a contribution these days, than he has in years past.

I am only saying each of them is significantly better than Zaza and gives the Hawks a much better chance of winning games in the regular season.

“okafor has basically been a starter all of his life, while Bynum sat the bench his first year and has been slowed by injury. At full strength, it isn’t even close as to who is the better center. It’s Bynum.”

Bynum has played his career with kobe bryant, pau and odum to take pressure off in front court and phil jackson coaching. Bynum is coming into his own and looks like 2d best center in nba for now but how much is his success owed to having odum, pau and kobe. Okafor played with chris paul for a couple seasons but that’s all he’s had around him and he still put up elite numbers for his position

Career wise, kaman is a better player than Marv or Zaza.

Najeh;
I fail to understand why Marv and Zaza for Kaman is any worse
than Marv and Zaza for Okafor.

We lose Kirk’s salary next yr. one way or another.

Marv’s replacement:
V-Rad
Josh
T-Mac
How many minutes will be left ?

At the [4 & 5] would be::
Kaman, Josh, (part time) Ivan, & Collins & hopefully Al for the playoffs.

How can you exclude an All Star center???? But I’ll go down the line….Cavs, Pistons, Celtics (don’t even have a center), Bobcats, Nets, Raptors, 76ers, Heat. Then once you include Al Horford…only the Magic have a better center group because of Dwight Howard.

Yall act like the Hawks have a bunch of scrubs. Look at the Timberwolves center situation or the Mavs. Center is not the position of dominance like it used to be. Now it’s all about how good your point guard and power forwards are and the Hawks are good at one and great at the other.

He may be out for the season but he’s still under contract. The fact is that Okafor and Kaman are old, injury prone, and paid a lot more than Zaza YET Zaza has comparable #’s in games he’s actually started. Not to mention he’s physically bigger than those you mentioned.

We’d give up two rotation players. Give up Kirk HInrich and we’re stuck with Pargo as the backup point guard. Give up Marvin and we’d have to start Vlad Rad and hope T-Mac stays healthy to back him up. Not to mention…either of those guys would send Ivan to the bench permanently. Get Okafor and he’d be under contract allowing no flexibility in free agency.

Al being under contract is irrelevant to a Kaman trade, since Kaman’s contract is expiring. By the time Al is healthy again, Kaman will either be re-signed as a backup to a more cap-friendly deal or he will leave as a free agent. Al being under contract is relevant to an Okafor trade, which is why I prefer Kaman over Okafor. Okafor is paid too much to be a backup, which is what he would be next year when Al returns. In the short term, though, both would be an upgrade over Zaza for this season.

Kaman and Okafor are not even two full years older than Zaza, so age is irrelevant. It is true that they are injury prone, and Zaza has been durable.

I went over in the previous post how Zaza is a lot more comparable to other backup centers — Kwame Brown is the one I chose to compare him to — than he is to Kaman. The last time Zaza started a full season, he put up 12 and 7 on 47% shooting with 2+ turnovers and the Hawks won 30 games. If you want to use two games against two below .500 teams to say the Hawks will be fine standing pat with Zaza for the remainder of the season, fine. I am using 6+ seasons of watching Zaza to say that while he will intermittently be a beast on the boards, his complete inability to help on D and his general clumsiness on offense will only be accentuated against starters. Kaman and Okafor are not All Stars but they have been better than Zaza for a long time now.

Ben Wallace is getting 3.3 boards, .75 steals, and .75 blocks is 13.5 minutes a game. Also with a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. To say that he can’t have an impact by rebounding & playing defense off the bench is just wrong.

Why we all love Ivan Johnson on this team:

Ivan Johnson: “My thing is, I don’t really watch basketball so I don’t know who anybody is,” Ivan Johnson said. “So when I match up against them, they are a regular player. I know the major players like LeBron [James], Kobe [Bryant], [Dwyane] Wade but all the extra ones I don’t know. Even if I did know them, I’m not going to be afraid. We are playing basketball.”

Hawks4Eva,

That statement by Ivan in MC article caught my eye as well but for another reason. Not to nitpick but I think a guy in Ivan position (an older rookie) or any pro player should watch film on their opponents. How does he expect to get better without knowing the tendencies of his opponents. He will not be expected to guard any of the three guys he mention that he watched so I’m not sure how watching those guys would help him. I think if he wants to get better and have an extended pro career, he needs to study film on other players especially at his position.

drmaryb.[*_*].

Like my Grand-Daddy says … Ivan is just a basketball player. He don’t give a rat’s tail about nobody else’s game.

Just rebound, defend and make free throws … Just throw the damned ball in the hole. Basketball IQ is funny to me, because when the ball is tipped, it doesn’t matter if the other guy is right or left handed, he still has to do all those things aforementioned.

Great players have heart, instinct and can score. Ivan good, what else does he need to know besides: Kobe, LeBron, Dwade and Dwight are great.

We all know how they put their pants on. LOL

Bigman – You said, “How can we not be pursuing this guy especially because we’re not giving up that much?”

None of the fantasy trades proposed on here are known to be available. We in reality have no idea what it would take to obtain Okafor, or if the League would even trade him at this point to the Hawks. Sund may have called 33 times for all we know and offered ZaZa, Hinirich, a 1st pick and Marvin for Okafor + a piece or pieces, and been laughed out of town for all we know.

Or ZaZa and Marvin for Okafor
Or Hinrich and ZaZa, or Hinrich and Marvin, or some combination and a 1st pick – we just don’t know.

DMD,

Most players (definitely the great ones) have mention they study film of other players. Players study film of other players looking to gain advantages. Hoping to learn tendencies, weaknesses and any other thing they feel could exploit. I like Ivan “don’t care who the other guy is” attitude but I do think he could improve if he study film. Hopefully it will help him not pick up a foul every five seconds.

Chris Daniels, listed at 7-0 265 stats thru 14 games in D League: 16.8 ppg, 8.6 rebounds, 54.5% shooting, 45.5% 3pt, 2.4 assists, 2.14 Blocks, 70.4% FT

Daniels has had rebounding games of 18 and 17 this season thru 14 games. He’s had a high score of 32, and hasn’t scored less than 13 in any game. He’s had two games of 5 blocks, and one of 4 blocks.

Sheldon is probably the worst pick in NBA history due to;

Scouting Reports!

Melvin, I see and agree with your fine points. But, that’s what scouting reports are for and, of cousre the team watches film in meetings. But, at the end of the day – you just have to play your game, hone your skill set and impose your will upon your opponent.

Knowing something and doing something about is is two different things. A wise man once said:

“To defeat a man, you must attack his weaknesses – To annihilate a man, you must attack his strengths.” -arthur unknown-
_______________

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. No fear! No deer!

You never want to be a dumb deer … Standing in the middle of the road – he doesn’t even know he is about to be hit! That analogy is to your credit in making your point. However, Ivan is an old rookie: I promise your there is not ONE basketball play he has never seen before.

There are only 9 notes in music … So no matter what song you play, you’ve heard it all before.

drmaryb.[*_*].

January 16th, 2012
8:29 am

That’s Fowl!

Ivan had one foul through 3 quarters his last two games, since Al went down. Not an issue it seems, besides knowing another players tendencies has absolutely nothing with drawing fouls. Either, your defense is sound/fundamental or it is not. Besides, you never know how the refs are gonna’ call a game, until the game plays out.

You see some night where the refs let teams play and some nights where you can’t even give a dirty look. Players adjust to how the refs are calling the games more so than anything else. IMHO.

Melvin, when you figure how to game plan for the refs? Let me know.

“Zaza has produced what exactly?” – Najeh

If we played Zaza more in the East seminfinals last year and played JC1 less, the Hawks go to the ECF. Check here for a word on Zaza’s production:

http://www.hoopinionblog.com/2012/01/can-zaza-replace-al-horfords-production.html

And since you didn’t respond to this from the previous blog, here’s Kaman added to that comparison

Scoring per 48 minutes:

Kaman: 21.6 ranked 9th among centers
Horford: 18.8 / 14th
Pachulia: 15.8 / 19th

Rebounding rate:

Kaman: 17.5 ranked 16th
Horford: 13.1% / 43rd
Pachulia: 17.2% / 20th

Fouls per 48 minutes:

Kaman: 5.2 ranked 40th among all centers
Horford: 2.9 / 66th
Pachulia: 5.4 / 38th

So Kaman and Zaza are almost identical in foul and rebounding rate. Kaman provides a little more scoring but we’re talking about 11.7 ppg in 26 mpg for Kaman vs. 5.7 ppg in 17.2 mpg for Zaza. Obviously Zaza’s minutes are going to go up, and we’ve seen that he will score and rebound more if given consistent minutes.

So basically what you are proposing, Najeh, is to exchange Kaman for Zaza, which would account for less than 6 ppg difference (since Zaza’s scoring average is obviously going to increase). And for that 6ppg you would thrown in Marvin in a career year? Where’s the logic?

“The Hawks have gotten by just fine so far with no Kirk.” – Najeh

buddy there is no stat that speaks to zaza’s hands of stone. he is awful and guys with quick passes have to by pass him or get a to. i have been appalled at his lack of ability when it comes to handles as he has none. that is what sets him back and apart from discussion as a starter because it affects both ends of the court. we would be better with starting ivan for consistent minutes than to continue the ruse that zaza is starter ilk. his quick hands and feet make up for his lack of height and makes zaza obsolete because of his size alone, he cant use it.

this whole argument only reinforces the arrogance of the basg and sund that they can wait to make a decision. really this is a decision that should have been made last summer of who to get to shore up the inadequacies in our post play. we shouldnt be surprised that we are very deficient in size and are lucky ivan is around. these statements come from an unbiased person who likes zaza’s contributions that come in a very unpredictable manner, except it is predictable he will fumble it away on both ends of the court.

I dont understand how just last week, LD said there has been no discussion about a roster move to replace Al. Dont you need to discuss all your options? The Hawks are in wait and see mode.

I feel like the Hawks have always been reactive and not proactive. And right now, they are not even being reactive.

That being said, maybe Rick has his scouts checking out D-League players that we don’t know about. Or maybe Rick is making phonecalls behind the scenes.

Grandad – I like Keith Benson also. The difference between Benson and Daniels, is Daniels has played consistently against a higher level of competition, just like Ivan. He’s bigger than Ivan, way more “solid” than Benson physically, has been to Lakers camp and got some “grooming” from Gasol and Bynum this past December. Posted that article yesterday? or Saturday.

And Grandad, for the motion O – the dude can pick and pop. 45% or so from 3, besides getting Blocks and Rebounds down low.

Now Marcus Lewis could possibly be turned into the next Chucky Hayes. Check him out as well.

But that’s if we wanted to go D League.

But yes, I would like to find a way to stay in touch with Benson, and get Ajinca from France. I think Benson has potential, especially on the defensive end of the floor. He’s probably 20 lbs away from being a super effective NBA player. He’s legit tall, great hands, etc.

Grandad – Another player who’s only playing 17 mpg in DLeague, but is doing better than he ever did in college, is this 7-5 guy from Gonzaga. If he keeps pushing, in a couple of years he may be worth a look. He’s already up to 260lbs. His name is Will Foster. 5.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.1 blocks per game, in 17.5 mpg.

Again, in a couple of years, he may be worth a look.

o’b, sadly i admit, i dont put much stock in when and what ld says and why.

Grandad – Daniels Height with shoes is 6-9.5. And his reach is 7-0.5. His standing reach is 2 inches higher than Al’s 8-11 to 9-1 for Daniels.

Also, Ivan was a “drifter”, getting kicked out of Korea, in trouble in D League, Colleges etc. But he’s turned out pretty well to this point.

Sloan, Ivan, and Chris all played for Erie. So there would be some connection there.

BTW, I do get a kick out of this “w/o shoes, with shoes” thing. Like Kevin Love, his shoes are 1.75 inches higher than w/o shoes, while a guy like Al is only 1 inch higher. Some guys wear some high bottomed shoes!

And Chris Daniels standing reach is 3 inches higher than Kevin Loves BTW. Not comparing Daniels to Love in any way other than height however.

ASG fibs – Ya’ll remember at draft time, we said we were only looking at College Seniors, because we needed somebody to come help us now? So we draft a college senior, with 1 NBA skill as Pendergraft likes to say, shot blocking, and he starts working out to gain bulk.

So when we cut him, we say (LD) – We knew he was a project when we drafted him. No, you guys said you weren’t drafting projects this year, because you needed somebody to help you now.

Oh well, I know it seems small, but it is a pattern – Remember “Hawks aren’t for sale headline”? Then a denial by Levenson. Then the almost sale of the team to Mereulo.

Sund is probably waiting to hear from the doctors after tomorrow’s surgery.

Based on medical advice, we could hear:

a) Al will heal until the playoffs and we believe that we can get in there without Al so we don’t need a trade; or

b) Al will not heal until the playoffs so we need to make a move.

To be perfectly frank, I believe that we have the personnel to get the playoffs as we are right now, so if Al is able to come back to close the season, on time to get in shape for the playoffs, then I would not make a move.

Nonetheless, I would, however, consider a trade for Kaman since I really think he could be very useful for us, not only this year but also going forward.

If he is now healthy but playing out of position, we could be looking at a guy who’s stock is very low right now, so the trade demand from NO could be decent and eventually he could like staying next year for a realistic value.

Loosing Kirk would not be, however, a good option if we only consider his value when “healthy” (which is nothing guaranteed).

Najeh,

I know that you love Teague and I do too, being one of the biggest supporters since day 1, but Hinrich was not guilty of holding Teague back. The guilty guy was LD.

In the last three playoff games against CHI last year, Zaza averaged 24 minutes, 6 points and almost 9 rebounds. In the first three games he played only 8-9 MPG, didn’t produce in game 2 or 3, but remarkably had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 8 minutes in Game 1.

Kaman has 11 career playoff games, all with the Clippers in 05-06. His averages are 10.7 points and 8 rebounds, less than 5 PPG more than what Zaza averaged in the conference seminfinals when given minutes. And for that 4.7 PPG difference, presuming Kaman can stay on the floor long enough to produce, you want to give away Marvin or Kirk?

What’s in for them to dice the Hawks all the time??

Chris Sheridan’s power standings:

ATL #9
LAST WEEK: 3-1 THIS WEEK: 4 games KEY GAME: FRI at PHI
Number of quality wins remains at 2 (Chicago and Miami). Saturday night vs. Cleveland brings their final home game of the month, and the Al Horford injury is beyond devastating. Might be the last time we see them in the Top 10. Comeback from 18-point deficit vs. Minnesota (although referee-aided) earns them bonus points. Eventually, the Pachulia factor will catch up to them.

What the f@ck???

Because of the non call on a possible charge by Ivan on the last play?? ONE CALL that we could consider going our way!!! ONE F#$$/&%$# CALL!!!!

What about the Houston and the Indiana games?

And what about ALL DOZENS AND DOZENS OF CALLS WE TYPICALLY GET AGAINST US ALL THE TIME??

14 teams in the NBA are OVER .500…

The Hawks will make the playoffs….

Al was the difference this year between contender or pretender….Zaza and Ivan can replace some of the things he did, but neither can protect the RIM.

If .500 gets you into the playoffs, we only have to go 24-29 the rest of the way to make it.

But .500 may not get you in, who knows? But it’s looking like it might this season.

1st playoff game about April 29th – that gives Al about 3 months and 12 days to heal.

And for those of you wanting Jeff to drive hard to the hole and finish – I don’t! I don’t want this guy twisting an ankle like DWade, and having Pargo as our starter for a week or two, or worse.

I agree that we have the personnel to make the playoffs right now. But that does not mean we should stand pat. What happens when ZaZa gets in foul trouble? Do we give Twin major minutes?

And when we play Orlando, Twin will probably get in foul trouble, and ZaZa will need help. I think Ivan will have his ups and downs, so Hawks should have reinforcement in the front court ready to go just in case.

ZaZa has been pretty durable for us, but with the compressed schedule, I will not be surprised if one of our centers (ZaZa or Twin) end up missing time for nicks and bruises.

I’m not saying make a trade. I am merely saying bring some guys in for a workout (D-League, Dampier, whoever). That way, when the need arises, we already know who we want to sign. And just because we sign them does not mean LD has to give them consistent minutes either.

Now Rufus, I’m sure you’ve seen me defend Horford on this blog, mostly from false statements, and incorrect stats, BUT…

By no means can Al Horford be considered a “rim defender”. Yeah, he gives effort, but he always jumps too late. He has to gather himself before jumping, which puts him at a disadvantage, particularly against quicker, driving opponents.

He not nearly as bad as a few on the blog would have you believe, but he’s NOT the difference in our rim being protected or not. That would be Josh, by a long margin.

That’s my opinion. Just trying to keep it real.

I think the Hawks are smart not to overreact to Horford’s injury and jump at the first trade or FA available. The longer they wait (and continue to stay afloat), the better the chances that they get a better deal. If the used car dealer knows that that your girl has dumped you because you’re riding the bus, there is NO way thatyou are going to get a good deal on the car, because you are desparate. But if you drive up to the lot in a working car, and you simply want to upgrade, then you’re likely to get a better deal.

In a few more weeks 9again, assuming they can stay afloat), teams that are doomed to the lottery maybe more willing to trade for Hinrich’s expiring deal or simply off-load someone who isn’t part of their long-term planning. but teams aren’t willing to make that declaration less then 4 weeks into the season.

Well, I do, for one. Let’s just say that he watches film and his coaches point out that X has a hard time when you force him left. Ivan then takes that knowledge and uses his big body to keep X from going to his strong side. Isn’t that worth some time in the film room?

Sautee, I don’t think so. I can’t envision breaking up the sacred core when one of the captains is hurt. If the Hawks want to get better, they need to acquire a player better than their 3 captains and I don’t think that is possible by NOT trading one of their 3 captains. So (IMO) all of this anxiety about making an immediate trade is essentially about giving the team a chance to “lose better’ than they would without Al. Hard for me to get excited about a trade that may result in losing the first round in 7 games vs. 5 games. I’d rather see them try to stay afloat and see if there is a chance to make a more impactful trade closer to the trade deadline.

GRANDAD-While I don’t have a candidate in mind, I do think we need another Big at this point with Horford out. With the support we now have off the bench, a Big that’s more mobile and less one dimensional than Twin would be a big boost. The time betwen now and when Horford returns would be sufficient for a player to learn our OFF/DEF systems. Also, having an additional function Big, along with the return of Hinrich and Horford, would gives us an even more solid, versatile and deeper bench.

I’d love to go into the playoffs with a bench of Zaza, Johnson, VRad, TMac, Hinrich, Twin, extra Big, and Green.
