Atlanta Hawks: Al Horford out 3-4 months with injury

The Hawks say Al Horford will miss 3-4 months with a torn pectoral muscle suffered during last night’s 96-84 loss at Indiana.. Horford is to get a second opinion on whether to proceed with the surgery.

Under the most most optimistic time frame, Horford would return in mid-April. Atlanta’s final regular-season game is scheduled for April 26.

“It’s disappointing news,” Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. said. “Al is a big part of our success. Hopefully he will be back by the playoffs. The tough part is we have been playing hard and playing well. We will have to try to get through it. We’re a veteran team and we have to find a way.”

Gearon said he hadn’t yet spoken to GM Rick Sund and wasn’t sure what moves the Hawks might make in the wake of Horford’s injury. In addition to Hoford, Atlanta’s centers include Zaza Pachulia and Jason Collins.

Atlanta’s payroll currently is slightly above the luxury-tax threshold of $70 million. The roster players without salary guarantees include guards Jannero Pargo, Donald Sloan and Jerry Stackhouse and forward Ivan Johnson

Veteran free agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, Joel Przybilla, Earl Barron and D.J. Mbenga.

Zach Klein of Channel 2 Action News first reported that Horford had a serious injury. Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported Horford would miss 3-4 months with a pectoral injury.

Only silver lining is that the Hawks will probably have a lottery pick in what will be a deep draft.

This season is obviously going nowhere for the Hawks, though.

We’ll certainly miss Horford. Well, most of us will.

TS will likely post soon, telling us that Al did it on purpose so he wouldn’t get traded, or some such BS.

Sund’s set himself up to fail this time.

Somewhere, Stack and/or Sloan are packing up their locker. Sund needs that roster spot.

The Hawks will make the only kind of move that they know how to make. They will make a “minimum salary move”.

Najeh,

With ZaZa being the starter, don’t be surprised if his play improves. Or maybe that’s wishful thinking on my part.

Does anyone have a FA list of centers who are still available?

Joel P. would be the best available big but the ASG are petrified of the luxury tax.

If ownership does not make a move now………..there should protests and boycotts, and whatever the heck else we need to do to get them sorry excuses for management out of there,

Bring back Rolle or Benson.

We will see how good of a coach LD is with one of his stars out. Either he makes the adjustments and finds a way to win or he fails and makes up and excuse.

With Al going down goes any hope of Dwight along with it, he would’ve been the cement for a trade, like Najeh said only bright spot now is a potential lottery pick.

I cant believe after last nights game that some were happy Horford got injured. Now that he is out for most of the regular season, Hawks are in big trouble. I dont see Hawks making a major trade for a big man. Might as well bring back Benson and roll with the team for the year

- How does IR work in the NBA?
- Will Hawks get disabled player exception?
- ZaZa/Collins aint all that bad…
- Before Horford, ZaZa was a double-double…
- What does this mean for D.Sloan/Stackhouse…
- Move Hinrich now for BIG?

Now is a better time than ever to trade Zaza, Vlad and Phx 2nd round pick for Mozgov and Faried.

We need size now not 3pt shooting. Timofey is 7′1 250 and Faried is 6′7 on a good day but plays much bigger, Zaza and Collins are NOT I repeat NOT going to cut it at C for the remainder of the season.

More minutes for Marvin at power forward, and more minutes for Ivan Johnson and Jason Collins. VladRad becomes a starter until Marvin comes back. Horrible.

Mr Cunningham, any ideas what they might do now?

Najeh Davenpoop

If the Hawks have any plans of being a playoff team this year, signing Ostertag or Przybilla is not going to make a difference. They may be better than Collins or even Zaza, but not by much.

Now is the time, if the Hawks want to be in the playoffs, to move Kirk’s expiring contract for a big man. Kirk and Zaza for Kaman or Okafor is the kind of deal that might work, although of course it involves taking on salary.

Of course, the other option is to use this as an opportunity to obliterate the core once and for all, cut ties with Joe/Josh/Marvin, stockpile picks in the upcoming deep draft, and start over.

Whatsup brigadierjerry? The seasons only like 3 weeks old and here we go…
We should have traded him when we had the chance to take this team to next level…Unfortunately injuries are apart of professional sports..

The size of the loss will be determined by how Gearon/Sund/Larry handle it. Of course the players as well. Sund should have not have cut Benson and should not have signed Stackhouse…

This will be interesting to watch this ish pan out…
