Atlanta Hawks: Al Horford out 3-4 months with injury

The Hawks say Al Horford will miss 3-4 months with a torn pectoral muscle suffered during last night’s 96-84 loss at Indiana.. Horford is to get a second opinion on whether to proceed with the surgery.

Under the most most optimistic time frame, Horford would return in mid-April. Atlanta’s final regular-season game is scheduled for April 26.

“It’s disappointing news,” Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. said. “Al is a big part of our success. Hopefully he will be back by the playoffs. The tough part is we have been playing hard and playing well. We will have to try to get through it. We’re a veteran team and we have to find a way.”

Gearon said he hadn’t yet spoken to GM Rick Sund and wasn’t sure what moves the Hawks might make in the wake of Horford’s injury. In addition to Hoford, Atlanta’s centers include Zaza Pachulia and Jason Collins.

Atlanta’s payroll currently is slightly above the luxury-tax threshold of $70 million. The roster players without salary guarantees include guards Jannero Pargo, Donald Sloan and Jerry Stackhouse and forward Ivan Johnson

Veteran free agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, Joel Przybilla, Earl Barron and D.J. Mbenga.

Zach Klein of Channel 2 Action News first reported that Horford had a serious injury. Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported Horford would miss 3-4 months with a pectoral injury.

If the Hawks have any plans of being a playoff team this year, signing Ostertag or Przybilla is not going to make a difference. They may be better than Collins or even Zaza, but not by much.

Now is the time, if the Hawks want to be in the playoffs, to move Kirk’s expiring contract for a big man. Kirk and Zaza for Kaman or Okafor is the kind of deal that might work, although of course it involves taking on salary.

Of course, the other option is to use this as an opportunity to obliterate the core once and for all, cut ties with Joe/Josh/Marvin, stockpile picks in the upcoming deep draft, and start over.

The only positive I can think of with Zaza being in the starting lineup is that he will be playing alongside Josh much more and his inability to play help defense won’t be as big of a detriment. We can only hope he gains confidence with the guaranteed minutes, hits mid range jumpers at a higher rate, and turns the ball over less.

Nah, Al was doing the right thing. He faced up, put the ball on the floor, and used his superior quickness to drive. Same play that got him a bucket a few possessions earlier. Hibbert just happened to recover in time and block it and it ended up with this freak injury.

Kaman’s contract is expiring, so Kirk + Zaza for him would not dent the Hawks’ long-term plans and still keep them competitive this year, although not nearly as competitive as they would have been with Al. The question is whether New Orleans would be willing to eat the $5.2 million Zaza is owed next year.

But this time, any short-term quick fix deal the Hawks make shouldn’t involve giving up their first rounder. If they can’t make a deal without giving that up, just keep the pick and use it on the best player available.

If they are going to rebuild, Josh can’t be the only one to go. Joe has to go too, even if they only get 50 cents on the dollar for him. Same with Marvin. Really, if rebuilding is the option, everyone but Teague should be put on the block for the best draft picks and rookie contract players they can get.

Everyone, this may be a break for the Hawks (in a good way). If this forces the Hawks to move Kirk’s expiring contract paired with someone like Marvin or Zaza for Okafor, then this will be a great move. Horford will be back in time for the playoffs, and having a big rotation of Josh, Al, and Okafor is pretty serviceable, and better than any we’ve had in a good while. That would be three very good bigs, who all can rebound and play good defense to go with a good back court. If the Hawks (which I think they can), can hold onto a top 6 seed (which I think they can do easily), then they would still be a night mare for any team in the playoffs, because of their playoff experience.

The muscle meshes and flows into the tendon, which attaches itself by meshing into the periosteum, (outer layer of bone sheath, covering). In other words you can not separate the muscle from the tendon or bone without shearing away from the bone itself.

Imagine a banana peel pulling away from the banana. The only way to reconnect the muscle to the tendon. Is to insert plates, pins, screws.

This is a devastating injury, think of Bo Jackson from the 80’s his pelvis muscles peeled back in his hip area. A career ending injury for his sport. Conversely, Al has a shoulder involvement. The shoulder has one function: to put the hand in space so that you can do things. With rehab he will recover fine, he is young and healthy, so time is on his side.

On that play, Al’s left arm was fully extended upon Hibbert’s impact and, the ligaments were stretched beyond its para-physiological joint space/limit. So, something had to give. The good news is the ligament did not tear, so the muscle gave way. The ligament would have been probably a 12 month recovery, (maybe not that long, since it is not weight bearing and pivotal joint) like the knee, ankle, foot.

His season is done nonetheless. The other good news is this will force the ASKG to go get a damned true center to battle those monsters like Hibbert, Dwight and Bynum. BTW, Boguts injury was far worse, you see it took him two years to get right, this year.

We will be lucky to get that 8th seed now, unless like O’Brien said zaza surprises.

So, I guess Sund might ‘consider’ bringing in a C now? He has to be forced to make a big move based on his record here.

I think this talk about blowing up the core is too hasty and too drastic. Let’s see how the Hawks play first without Horford before we consider making any significant changes to the roster. Other players will just have to step up right now while Horford is out [for probably the remainder of the season] and LD will just have to do his best Nate McMillan impersonation and coach ‘em up.

Now, I miss Jamal in a Hawks’ uni more than ever. You could depend on Jamal to pick up the scoring slack in these situations when one of your team’s main scorers is out [with injury or whatever]. When he’s given the green light to shoot/score, you know Jamal has the potential to fill it up.

Blood Flow!

“I am not an orthopedic doctor but I believe the main issue with the Bo Jackson injury was the lack of blood flow to that area of the hip makes healing more difficult. ” -Hiesenberg-
__________

Excellent comment here!!! You may not be an orthopedist, but uou are thinking like one. I tried to explain the condition without using any medical terminology. But you are absolutely on point here, re: Bo Jackson.

The white meat: ligaments, tendons and intra-capsular joint cartilage ARE white, because they have NO blood supply conversely muscles and bone marrow do. Blood transports oxygen, nutrients and healing potential to tissues which sustains life. When blood flow is stopped to those organs, the tissue itself will undergo necrosis, (death of tissue) within minutes. That tissue death is permanent and irreversible.

Luckily, Al tore his muscle away from the tendon and not the bone itself. I imagine his tendon is still firmly emeshed into the bone and is unaffected. But this is still devastating nonetheless.

Great job Hiesenberg.

Isn’t there an age-old axiom that you never trade big for small? So we’re expecting Hinrich to be the center-piece of a trade that lands us a serviceable center that can help us get to the second round?

I’d vote for either a bigger PF that would allow us to play super-fast (e.g. Brandon Wright or Anthony Randolph or someone of that type) or go Big Country with Pryzbilla or Ostertag or pry Diop from Charlotte and split the minutes across the marginal centers on the team. Some one like Yi would have fit the athletic bill (just signed with Dallas). I just don’t see ripping the squad apart because we’re that close to breaking through the playoff glass ceiling. Anyone who thinks we’re a bigger (but not better) center than Horford away from the ECF is fooling themselves.

LOL @ the give up mentality of ATL fans.

This is what others outside of the city see. Team hasn’t even played a full game yet without Al, and people are already talking about breaking this team up.

Memphis is in the 2nd week of playing without Zach Randolph, who will probably be out another 2 months . . . yet . . . that fan base isn’t crying about it. And the Memphis front office didn’t sid idly by and feel sorry for themselves either.

The Hawks have more than enough to make the playoffs. What they need now at the C position, is a big guy who can rebound a little. Przybilla should be the target, seeing that he’s traditionally a very good rebounding big man.

Get Przybilla, cut Pargo . . . because the Hawks aren’t going over the Luxury Tax, just to replace Horford. Challenge Zaza’s azz to step his game up. And give more minutes to Ivan ( not Jason Collins ).

Plus Hinrich will be ready in a few weeks, making us stronger in the backcourt.

In the end though, we need JJ and Smith to really take over the leadership of this team. And they’ll have to step their games up.

This is also a golden opportunity for Smith. If he plays well in the absence of Horford, he may make the All-Star team. But what Smith really needs to concentrate on doing, is rebounding the basketball. Somebody on the frontline will have to hit the boards HARD. And that guy may be Josh Smith.

I thought the Hawks could be something like a 39 – 27 team this season ( which would have them winning 48 or 49 games in an 82 schedule ). Without AL, that number probably drops to 36 – 30.

Still no reason to give up on the dang season. Let all of this play out and see how these guys respond.

Our team is built around tweeners. Not conventional players. Josh Smith is a tweener. Marvin is a tweener. Horford is a tweener. Teague is a tweener. Joe’s window is closing.

You have certain tweeners (Teague, Smith)that are uptempo and slashers and need shooters to spread the floor and a center to rebound.

To this day people are saying Al’s a PF. But when he and Zaza were in together did his scoring go up? If he was that good at PF we could’ve traded Smith for a conventional SF a LONG time ago.

Why did we hold onto players that arent compatible!

When Al got to Atlanta the Hawks were a less than respectable team, with him being undersize for the position he’s been playing, the Hawks made it to the playoffs 4 years in a row, after a drought of 8 years. He does no get any credit or respect for that.
I do not think Al should be blamed for the mediocrity of the owners of the team, and the lack of effort, or interest to go out there and get the pieces this team needs to be more competitive.
But some bloggers have taken their hatred too far. They are happy because Al went down!!!!

Lords of London!

Disabled Player Exceptioh = 50% of Horfords salary ($12M) for one year, so up to $6M. Naturally, Hawks not paying luxury tax, ” -tyger-
__________

Along this line of thinking … If the CBS gives the ASKG a 50% salary exception for 6M, then the ASKG can file an injury claim for the remaining salary of 6M. So, even if the 6M puts them over the luxury tax threshold, which is should not because they are under/slightly over now:

Then, their financial loss should be negligible. In other words they should have 12M to spend with that 6M cash payment from the Lords of London insurance policy. The down side is that Al would have to declared lost for the entire season and unable to play in the post season. If there is a post season for this team.

The question is do you just shut Al down totally for the year. Even if Al returns, how effective will he be psychologically playing hard and with relentless contact. Will he be the same player, having lost all that physical conditioning. The post season is not training camp to get your legs back. I would scratch him for now and just move on this year. How will the team play without theor third captain. He will be surely missed in every way possible. He is one of our all stars. Guess, I’ll hang my hat on zaza, I love him … He is foul prone though.

Just Brutal!

This brutal schedule should have been slowly increased with a bulk of the b2b2b’s scheduled more toward the middle or perhaps extend the season itself all together.

There will be a lot more groin pulls for the older guys and torn ACL’s to come this month. So brace yourselves. This is an indictment on the owners and Stern.

I stand by that, I take no sides whatsoever in the lockout. As a fan, not my concern. I just want to see really good NBA basketball, I no dog in their financial fight.

Bad injury for Al, dude, get well soon!!

Most of you doomsayers are going on like Hawks can’t win without Al. The season is done. Blow it up, blah, blah, blah. Why don’t people wait and see how things play out 1st? Maybe this will cause the ASG to finally do something.

And besides, that was not a block, that was a foul on AL.

Maybe a 2nd opinion will give better news, and hope Al heals as quick as Joe and Josh.

And this is just the beginning. With a short season and all those games back to back, look for more guys to go down league wide.

For every Hawk player that does not shoot 78% or better at the line going forward, Drew should make him shoot 1000 free throws after every game.

Before I discuss Big Al;
I must answer northcyde concerning his definition of ……
” putting a team on their back ” !

If you [n c] think that jackin’ up shots is the definition of putting
a team on your back; it becomes more and more evident of our
generation gap.
Bill Russell or Oscar Robinson even Bird & Magic would
cringe at that thought.
1st and foremost … what was the scoring disparity between Joe and Granger.
What was the final score ?
Did Joe have to take one extra shot to:
* hold Granger under his scoring avg / [24 -10 = 14] ^(10)
** (16 being DG’s scoring avg)
* Joe himself scoring 17 rather than 15 = ^(2)
* Joe avg’s 3 assts / let us say he got 5 assts = ^(4)
* Joe gets one Xtra def Reb / Indy got 9 off rebs / – one basket = ^(2) pts
* heaven forbid he made a hustle play and saved two points ^(2)
* Joe made 4 TO’s, is it too much to suggest he make 1 (+/-) at least ^(6)

That equal a 26 point swing w/o him doing anything extraordinary !

We lost by 12.
Joe puts the team on his back or more definitively Joe show up;
we win by 14 !

All you guys think about is shootin’ and scoring !
-moronic-
I once had a 5-10 player dominate a game bu stealing the ball [defense]
scoring when presented, assisting his teammate, and most importantly;
involving our post player who was previously apathetic.
The post player dominated physically, but, it was the guard who actually
through “athletic arrogance” put our team on his back.
Our whole team gained confidence just from his attitude and demeanor !
He took over the game -mentally & psychologically- !

Clearly, I know what I mean’t, on my original post.
Consequently I know my craft,
whereas your depth of knowledge “pertinere” basketball is dubious.

What you’re saying with this statement is that the Hawks will be a better team this year without Al (.545 winning percentage; 36-30) than they were last year with Al (44-38, .537 winning percentage).

That is the definition of optimism right there.

Al is worth more than 3 wins (4 wins in a full season) to this team, particularly considering that Zaza is his backup.

Just to continue the discussion with Grandad . . .

Those 4 players you named ( Russell, Bird, Magic, Big O ) would all agree with me. Because when they took over games, they would all do what they do the best. With Russell, he would dominate the boards even more. With Big O, he would increase his scoring. With Bird, the same way ( see the Nique vs Bird battle ). Even with Magic, his scoring would increase, although he normally used his elite playmaking abilities to take over games.

But in each instance, those players would simply do what they do best, in order to take over the game.

The situation we were in last night was a situation in which a fairly hot JJ needed to be looking for his shot. And since we need him to score the basketball, he needed to shoot more, to see if he could score more.

Depending on his playmaking abilities wouldn’t be a good option, seeing that Zaza was fumbling passes, Teague wasn’t finishing, and Vlad wasn’t making jumpers. I’ll give you the defense on Granger, although with Granger, he took over the game how? . . . . by scoring more. Matter of fact, it was the same way that Kevin Martin took over the game in the loss @ Houston on New Year’s Eve.

The approach that you’re currently seeing out of JJ and Josh tonight, is what should have been going on last night. I love the way both are being assertive offensively and looking to score in their comfort zones. It’s what these two will have to do from now on, with Al out.

Like others have said, including me . . . this is a golden opportunity for Smith. If he continues to attack the rim, and not settle for jumpers, he could average 20 ppg in the absence of Horford. The same goes for JJ.

Great job by both guys so far this game.

That’s only Vlad’s 2nd shot and his 1st score on the three. He needs more touches.

Mullens for a 2nd pick for the ‘Cats
Okur for a 2nd pick for the Nets
Xman and a 2nd pick for Spieghts

We ought to be able to get somebody for a 2nd pick – and yes ya’ll, agreeing with the ‘Dad – Mullens would look real good in a Hawks uni right now

We do have 4 2nd picks the next 2 season – trade them all for somebody serviceable right now

I’d never thought about it until watching The Ed Show tonight, that I have never met any blacks. Good to know that you’re never too old to learn something new.

Hawks looking very well coached, Drew may get an extension after all, at this point and with this team, I wouldn’t be mad.

22 and 17 from the post tonight, nice effort from zaza and ivan. got to love ivan and said it earlier he si the go to guy and salvaging the team if he plays post as well as we have seen him do. he handles bosh the other night and maybe if he starts to get a few less fouls called while staying aggressive he might be our smallish stud center off the bench.

nice night for josh as well, since the fav whipping boy of al is dead for lack of conversation in ts maybe a few josh detractors will let a few games slide before they start trashing josh again. they refuse to believe and say he is not “the straw that stirs our drink”. he is and we go as far as he can carry the team. it is scary but true. a lot of voting fans have been right all along as he is the top vote getter for all star for our atlanta hawks though he doesnt get the recognition of that because he never makes it to the game and the other guys get passes from sources other than fans.

In the words of Charles Barkley this is a ” turrible” loss !

Because the Hawks are cheap and not really invested in winning a ring this season, I expect them to waive both Jerry Stackhouse & Donald Sloan so that they can sign a Dan Gadzuric, Earl Barron or Joel Pryzbilla because there is no way that they are going to survive making qualifying for the post season with the likes of ZaZa and Jason Collins as their primary big men.

SteveW

Teague with only 1 turnover again in 34+ minutes. Impressive. That’s been his most surprising stat to me.

Teague’s been in the Top 3 for all players in Steals per game, and the top 5 in PG’s who play 30+ mpg in turnovers. I’m sold on Teague. I was sold on him as a rookie however.

He’s not elite – but very good – and only 23.

We can’t really waive Sloan until Hinrich get’s back. If Teague or Pargo go down, you need a backup. Unless we trust Willie to be that backup. He’s pretty good at what he does, which is not backup PG.

Josh – You are a terrible FT shooter! If you could get your FT shooting groove back, it would probably mean an extra 1 mill per year on your new contract!

I have to give Larry Drew his due. He has implemented a “sytem” on offense and this year on defense. We didn’t have that under Woodson. If, Uncle Larry can keep that going, he may reach Coach “K” and Bilicheck-sic celebrity status. A “Plug and Play” model where you can just insert players that fit and keep rollin’.
