Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 111, Bobcats 81
11:11 pm January 12, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- Sorry for no game thread post, blog people. I was a tad busy.
- The Hawks for the most part didn’t try to play down the significance of losing Al Horford to injury (not that they really could). But they regrouped and went out and beat down the Bobcats, who had shown some pluck against superior opponents this season.
- “We had a few lapses defensively but our energy level was high,” Larry Drew said. “That’s something we look for every game. When we play with that type of energy and get up the floor and fly around, we are a pretty good club. And tonight we were flying around.”
- The most encouraging thing for the Hawks was that they dominated the boards against a pretty good rebounding team with size. Josh Smith (13 rebounds), Zaza Pachulia (10) and Ivan Johnson (seven in 21 minutes) did their thing but the Hawks got production from unlikely guys: Vladimir Radmanovic had eight rebounds, Joe Johnson had seven, and Jeff Teague had six.
- Josh said that’s the kind of effort the Hawks need without Horford available to help him hold it down on the back line: “Defense, rebounding, help each other out, gang rebounding. Even the guards have to come in there and help out a little bit. Ivan has done a good job thus far with the toughness. I think everyone else needs to pick it up.”
- Scoring was a group effort, too. The Hawks recorded 29 assists on 42 field goals as all five starters had at least three assists. “We took care of the basketball, we executed very well and we moved the ball,” Drew said. “I thought we played overall a really solid game.”
- The Bobcats tried to push Josh around but he was beasting. He had four of Atlanta’s 20 offensive boards. Josh also made four of his nine shots from outside of the paint while going 14 for 22.
- The Bobcats sent Tyrus Thomas at Joe with predictable results. Only a 2 for 8 night from the 3-point line prevented Joe from really going off. As it was, he got to the line for eight attempts (and made seven).
- Ivan (12 points on 9 shots, six fouls) isn’t polished but he’s athletic, energetic and physical. That is going to come in handy as the Hawks try to win ugly.
- Drew hadn’t decided on the starting center an hour before the game. He settled on Zaza but didn’t commit to it long term. I’m thinking that probably means Drew will use the “big” lineup when appropriate.
- “We will just kind of look at our opponent and look at the matchup and see what works best for us,” Drew said. “I was a little concerned because [Byron] Mullens plays like more of a four. He’s a pick-and-pop guy and forced Zaza on the perimeter a lot more but I thought Zaza adapted really well.”
- Ivan Johnson played center in spots but Drew said he’s “not necessarily” the backup center. Jason Collins didn’t see the court until garbage time.
- If the Hawks really are still trying to make the playoffs, I don’t see how they can make do without another veteran center. They have two guards who don’t see regular minutes and are using an undersized rookie at center. There don’t appear to be any good trade possibilities for Atlanta, at least not until Kirk Hinrich is healthy and his expiring contract might somehow fetch an effective big.
- Rick Sund: “The center position has some decent depth to it with Al and Zaza and Twin and we really wanted to add some toughness, and that’s why Ivan Johnson has been a nice plus for us. We’ll sit down and discuss everyything. No real decision tonight.”
- Drew said Tracy McGrady is scheduled to see a back specialist tomorrow and could play Saturday against the T-Wolves. Marvin Williams (ankle) is day-to-day. “I don’t know when he will be back to play,” Drew said of Marvin. “He was in here earlier and said he’s feeling good so hopefully he will be back soon.”

Yea we got bailed out by Josh’s jumpers. Again it’s not the fact that he shoots them, it’s the fact that when he’s cold as ice and they’re not falling…he’s still letting them rain. He’s not a shooter. if Joe was cold, i’d still want him jacking them up.
We all know it’s gonna happen. We will be playing a good team and Josh will become arc happy. He’ll be missing them but will continue shooting them. Drew will not find the balls to sit him down or tell him to drive. I love Joe to death, but he’s afraid to say anything to Josh either.
I’m looking forward to Hinrich’s return. If Drew plays him smart off the bench, our 2nd unit defense could be even tougher. I want to see Ivan step up more. I was watching the Clippers/Heat game and I loved what I saw from Reggie Evans. When he came in the game, Hubie Brown said: “Reggie Evans is coming in. Now this guy knows his role on the team. Rebound and play defense. He know’s its not his job to score or get touches” [or something like that]. Anyways, I saw him come in and do exactly that. He rebounded, grinded on defense, never asked for the ball, etc. That’s all we need Ivan to do. Rebound and play defense.
It’s gonna be tough. But i believe we’ll still make the playoffs. Maybe a 5 or 6 seed without Horford. And I’m hopeful he’ll be back by the start of the playoffs.

I doubt that Sheed can effectively play starters’ minutes right now, but he’d be a better free agent pickup than anyone else out there. At the very least the Hawks should bring him in for a workout. He is after all one of the greatest Hawks of all time based on per game averages… and his #36 is available if he wants it.

For those who think Josh and Joe will play better because of chemsitry issues with Al:
It doesn’t say much about their maturity and toughness if that’s true. Two of the most inconsistent players acting like that when the most consistent player goes down? Seems to prove Barkley right about them.

One consequence of Al’s injury… Drew is much more likely to have his time as head coach extended because you can’t blame him for how the team performs now. If they make the playoffs, he’s coach of the year. If they make the lottery, not his fault.

“That’s all we need Ivan to do. Rebound and play defense.” EmirS
Emir, you must not have seen the Miami game. Ivan is a scorer. He can board and play some D, but putting the rock in the hole is in his DNA. He has an incredible first step for a guy his size and he can hit from outside. What Drew should be asking Ivan to do is make himself invisible to referees. The zebras single out guys like Ivan. They read the papers and they know this guy has anger issues. They will push his buttons to see if he wants to be made an example of.

More like great opportunity to find out just how big a star Josh really is, after being passed over for an All-Star selection in favor of a nicer guy. Anybody remember when I said start of next season we will be in the same position Denver was in last year, knowing Mello was not returning? The only thing that will keep Josh here past next year is a max contract.

Id be surprised if they don’t make the playoffs and by then who knows what shape Al will be in. The hawks should try and find a zaza double out of the scraps to come in miss some easy lay ups foul big names but most of all bang and play with energy nevermind scoring. I feel the rest of the roster can pic up for lost points and remain some semblence of a strong defence… as for marvin for bedrines id think very doubtful due to kwame suffering the same injury as Al and how small they would be without that Stiff.

I’d call Detroit and ask about Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace. Prince is a little overpaid having just signed a 4 yr $27M deal this offseason, and his stats are down, but I think that’s more of a product of him trying to carry a bad team. Marvin’s salary comes up just $1M short of covering both salaries. Big Ben is averaging 3.3 rebs and nearly a block a game in roughly 12 minutes a night. Marvin plus our second round pick for Tay and Big Ben. Detroit gets younger, saves $1M, and picks up what could be a decent 2nd rd pick.

Good to see Josh and Joe lead the way instead of letting the team crumble (we would have lost that game last year, I believe). Then again, there was no Gerald Wallace to deal with and the Bobcats aren’t a particularly “good” team.
But a win is a win, and our two best players played well.
As others have said, Minnesota will be more of a challenge on the glass, maybe in other areas as well. We shall see.

Sund is an idiot.
He claims depth at center, but Al is done for the season and Twin doesn’t get to play unless
1) Dwight is on the floor
2) It’s garbage time and everybody else has already gotten to play.
That leaves only Zaza at center. Depth my arse….

Big Ray, I think Sund’s comments were before Al got hurt. We will need another big man before playoffs. Still, we only have one back to back over the next 30 days. Kirk will be back by then. I like what Ivan gave us at the 3 for a few minutes. He’s no smaller than Charles Barkley, and he’ll sweep floors and do laundry if coach asks him.
I also hope coach will be creative with Marvin when he returns and play him minutes at 5. Yes, Marvin is the same size as Al. Consider a starting 5 of Marvin, Rad, Josh, JJ and Teague. 5 3 balls on the court at once. They may not look like an east coast team. So what. They’ll give a lot of teams a lot of trouble. Imagine a 5 thinking he likes Marvin only to find his fat ass on the 3 point line trying to cover.
Injuries happen. Be creative and deal with them. Be professional. Do what it takes.

The Dollar Tree!
Bottom line is the 2 for $1 Bargain Bin is empty. The ASKG can drape themselves over the sides of the cardboard box all they want. But, unless they have a 7′ wing span they’re not gonna’ be able to reach that low and scrape the bottom, not this time.
Besides, all that “Too Much Good Stuff” they opine for was gone by X-Mas eve. 680 The Fan just reported that the NBA injury report is 13 pages long right now, ain’t no more good centers left that everyone else hasn’t already eyeballed.
BJ Mullens ship has already sailed while Sund was hiding under his desk looking for his paper clips, (might wanna’ splurge and get that computer now).
Looks like we’re gonna’ have to go to war with what we got and Coach Drew’s system will have to “plug and play” with generic level talent. One can only hope that the bench remains healthy and zaza + Ivan surprises us all and just step up. My only regret is IF things fall apart, Gearon, JR will have another excuse not to go over the Luxury Tax Threshold. Until they do that, outside super stars will not see Atlanta as a sunny destination. Why live here and play here when you can just come and go from Hartsfield Jackson Andrew Young Martin Luther King International Airport as you please.
Aye Gearon, JR you can spend your way to a championship and, fill the arena IF you had some heart!
Spend and they will come!!!

And of course, the Hawks still have options. Drew talked to the media for 10 minutes, and it was hard not to notice the paper on his desk listing every NBA center. The Hawks have two true 5s on the roster with Pachulia and Jason Collins but clearly will explore their options in the coming days to round out the roster. Unsigned free agent Kyrylo Fesenko would be one potential option.
Unfortunately, their hands probably are tied when it comes to replacing Horford with anywhere close to similar production. Atlanta is already over the luxury tax threshold — it can get under by paring down a couple of nonguaranteed contracts, but the Hawks gave out all minimum contracts this offseason partly to avoid the tax man.
As a result, it’s mostly on these four — Smith, Johnson, Williams and Pachulia — to show how far they’ve come in the past half-decade.
“All the guys are going to have to raise their games,” Horford said. “It starts with Joe and Josh.”

Pachulia claims to want more minutes. Time to bring it, dude.
Marvin, time to man up, put that big but down low and bang a few minutes.
Center by committee.
Again, I like a lineup of JT, JJ, Smoove, Rad and Marvin against most teams, Orlando excluded of course. They won’t be monsters down low, but they’ll give the other team hell on the offensive end and play more than adequate on ball defense. Competitive and entertaining, if not typical East Coast basketball.
Ivan at least will bang, which is more than our bench bigs the last two years.

Better for the injured Hawks to fully recover during a relatively easy home stretch than to return early against someone like the T’wolves only to reinjure themselves.
Teams will look to hose us in a trade. Better to sign an available FA in the next few days and wait until closer to the trade deadline when we may get better value.
Josh has been incredible the past few games, best I’ve ever seen him.
Best time to trade a player is when their value is high, especially if it is potentially “unsustainably” high.

An al horford fan boy calling someone inconsistent is hilarious. Face it haters josh was playing better than AL before he went down with his injury, heck y’all complain about josh shoooting jumpers when AL was in he did it more, AL is soft and refuses to play in the post much if at all. It doesn’t say much about their maturity and toughness if that’s true…

Look at the rebounding advantage. The whole team played better. Last year when Al or fat Josh went down what happened?
Blowouts to Washington and Charlotte iirc.
How are you going to question toughness when Joe just had 7 rebounds. Al’s average and Smith nearly doubled his average.
Man Smith + shooter + REAL center. How many stretch 4s and centers are out there. Get it done Sund.

I was getting the feeling that the additions were offsetting our subtraction and that improvements in Josh, Joe and Marvin might just result in a special season. Then the bad karma of the ownership hit and we lost our center. If the owners ever had a chance to step up with some cash it is now. They could add a significant piece, get Kirk back soon, get our center back for the playoffs (say round 2) and make the first serious run since Fratello days. They just might get the fan base back.

As much as we need help in the paint, it makes sense to at least let the bench play to see if they can handle the opponent. Losing Al makes this team work harder and now they have to produce to keep their job.
As for LD and Sund on the last year of their deals, I’m not buying it.
We are playing well enough for both of them to keep their slots. The bench is playing well enough (and all here can admit that) that Sund will keep his position as EVP and GM (who knew he was also EVP?).
Can we compete with Minny with our current roster? Yes.
Seriously, with Al out, we automatically are bigger on the inside and we have 18 fouls out of Zaza/Ivan & Collins to doll out….like the ORL matchup, use them and use them all.
I just don’t see us getting any big man of value unless someone says sure I’ll take Marvin or Kirk and Zaza for a replacement. Kirk will have to prove he’s healthy again, so that won’t be anytime soon.
I always thought I would take anyone just to move Marvin and Zaza and get more value out of 12.25M,but that may not be feasible if we have to take on more years than what we currently owe.
After last night, I’m content with what we have on the roster, but the next game might have me teetering back to having to do something quick.
But, we were more aggessive last night and more active, so I take that as a good response to Al’s injury.
And Jeff Schultz will be proven wrong with his comment about Al.

Good win for the Hawks last night. Not only did they play w/o Al, but it was also the second of a back to back. I liked the team effort.
Last 5 games, Josh is averaging 24 points, 9 rebs, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 3 assists (and that’s despite shooting 46% from the FT line). If Josh keeps it up, especially doing it without Al, I think he would have a good chance of finally making an AS game.
One thing concerns me is JJ and those 3 pointers. Coming off a terrible shooting year last year, he has had games where he shot 1-7, 2-9, 1-5, 2-8, 0-3, and on the season, he is shooting 34% (and falling) from 3. We need him to shoot better from 3’s, especially when we go up against good teams.
With Rubio averaging 8apg, Teague will have to step up. And Kevin Love is averaging 15 rebs per game, so our front court willl have their hands full, and once again, they will need the guards to help out.

“kaman costs too much to match up salaries”
I can’t disprove this because the trade machine is not working, but I don’t think this is true. Kaman makes $14 million this year. Kirk + Zaza is $12.75 million. Marvin + Zaza is $12.25 million. In the new CBA, the salary matching restriction has been relaxed if you are under the luxury tax line; you can acquire up to 150% + $100,000 of the salaries you send out, and either one of those trades (Kirk+Zaza for Kaman or Marvin+Zaza for Kaman) would work under that rule since neither the Hawks nor the Hornets is over the cap.

Out of the possibly available big men via trade (Kaman, Okafor, Biedrins…) Kaman is most feasible long term because he is expiring. He may not be the best player on that list (Okafor is) but he still provides much more of a presence inside than Zaza.

If the Hawks weren’t going to do anything at full strength, don’t expect them to do much of anything to replace AL. Remember, this organization is still operating under the premise of not going over the Luxury Tax. It will actually make no sense for them to do it now.
For once, I’m not going to be mad if Sund took the easy way out there, and just signed a big body to bring in here that can rebound. If there is a sensible deal to be had out there though, it definitely should be explored.
With Horford out, we need as much talent on this team as possible.

With Horford out, we needs as much talent on this team as possible. So if a trade that sees two guys go out for one marginal guy is on the board, I probably wouldn’t make that trade.

Nice win, but CHA is one of the worst looking ball clubs around.
In particular without Magette’s scoring (which always gives us problems) and with Kemba on an off night.
Mullens looks good, but he is not a Center in this league. He is very athletic for his size but he really plays like a SF.
I thought that we – here in the blog – were put off by Centers who played like that.
Without Horford and us not being that good on the boards, Mullens only caught 4 (FOUR) boards in 32 minutes…
