Atlanta Hawks at Pacers: Game thread

Indianapolis–At shootaround Tracy McGrady said he was feeling good. Not so much tonight: He’s a late scratch with back spasms. It wasn’t announced until after the locker room was closed to media types so don’t have details.

  • Danny Granger (ill) and George Hill (back) are active for the Pacers after missing Monday’s 96-86 loss at Philly.
  • Yes, Larry Drew showed the players clips of Charles Barkley’s criticisms of the Hawks during the loss to Miami. I’ve never liked reacting to what Barkley says because smack talking is his schtick and I don’t think it makes much of a difference. Plus, while the loss to the Heat was a bad one it wasn’t enough to draw a conclusion about this team. Don’t get me wrong: I love Barkley. He’s fun and entertaining. His act is good for fans and talk radio (and Web hits, apparently) but has no real bearing on basketball so I tend to just laugh it off.
  • And, sure enough, word is Hawks players aren’t going around talking or thinking about sticking it to Barkley. Nevertheless, Drew thought it might do some good for players to hear Barkley’s barbs, so he replayed some of them before the Hawks played at Charlotte Friday. “I wanted them to know, wanted them to hear what the perception is. Most guys take it for what it’s worth and say that’s what he gets paid to say. Those that want to change the perception, they will step up.”
  • However, L.D. extended the lesson beyond Sir Charles’ smack talk into areas I think are relevant: “With the officials, if you whine a lot then people will start to say you are a soft team. If you don’t play through adversity, then you will get the label of a soft team. I want guys to play through adversity, when things aren’t going good. I’ve always said it’s easy when things are going good.”

FTPB, the offense has generally been good, but there’s no reason this team should be 18th in transition points per possession. They screw up way too many transition looks considering the kind of players on this roster.

“How you feel about Joe Lombardi (the Saints QB coach) as the OC? I looked him up on the Saints website, and I think he is an intriguing possibility, plus he has a connection to ATL.”

He is really young and hasn’t done much other than coach Brees, but being Brees’ QB coach and working under Payton definitely makes him a good candidate.

DX: Left Shoulder Sprain?

You can’t diagnose a ligament sprain from an Xray. Al needs an MRI. That is a differential diagnoses right there.

If Josh ever leaves the game now, our frontline is going to be terrible. Taking away Al is bad enough, but when you take out both Josh and Al, we probably have one of the worst front lines in the NBA. And, when you also consider that the only other starter who has been rebounding the ball reliably during this season (Marvin) is also out, we just look very subpar inside. If I were the Pacers, I’d be attacking the paint relentlessly, even if Josh is in. With him being the only one left to protect the rim, you know he’s going to end up picking up fouls and sitting soon.

“Well, Josh has 3 fouls so, we’re down to the big 1. Super Joe, but no friends. This is any opportunity for someone else to step up.”

I would think that this would be the type of situation where T-Mac could really step up and play a big role, but unfortunately, he’s out also. We don’t have many options left outside of Joe on the offensive end. Vlad and Willie Green need someone to create for them to be effective, and Teague doesn’t have big men to set up inside with Josh and Al out. I guess we need to hope that we can get Vlad and Green some open shots off of Joe and Jeff, and hope that Zaza is ready to get some garbage baskets from all of the bricks.

I was just thinking, as bad as it is now, what happens when Zaza sits too? Who is going to play center? Collins really doesn’t sound like a good option, and Ivan is about half a foot shorter than Hibbert.

****************

He’ll try to go with Twin first, but Ivan is stout enough to play center tonight. Hibbert is a softie, although he is improving. The height advantage isn’t all that big of an issue, seeing that Hibbert isn’t the greatest rebounder in the world anyway.

All in all, being down 3 isn’t bad to this team. This is a good squad we’re playing tonight. Both JJ and Josh will definitely have to go for 20+ points. JJ may have to go for 30+ ( if his shot is still falling ).

Don’t know if we can rely on great defense to bail us out, seeing that Horford won’t return. Surely Drew will use Ivan in the 2nd half, and he’ll at least need to make an impact on the boards. This is NOT a game for Collins.

I meant to say Vlad-Rad can’t rebound in my earlier post and I see you got that. Vlad-Rad has only 3 rebounds in 20:52 of playing time. I would say that’s low for a 6′10″ forward with the starting center [Horford] out. He’s on pace to grad 6 boards in nearly 42 minutes of playing; that’s poor rebounding efficiency in my observation.

I don’t know why people are acting surprised, it’s not like Indiana is a garbage team. I thought we would probably win before Horford went down tonight, but I know how bad this team is at dealing with adversity, and I know how poor our interior depth is, so once Horford went down and Josh got into foul trouble, I assumed this would be a loss. Johnson has to step up when we’re shorthanded on the road. He’s our veteran leader, and we can’t have the turnovers and lazy defense (once we got behind).

Jeff Teague gets blamed because he’s the PG. I don’t care how few games he’s started, when you’re a PG in this league, you have to take the blame when the offense doesn’t run. You have the ball in your hands. You can decide who gets the ball, when they get the ball, and where they get it on the floor.

Teague will learn. Joe??? Cleveland please call. All I want is expiring contracts.

We all know that Joe is the only starter who can create his own shot. Therefore, Teague needs to be more assertive in setting up his teammates. 6 assists should be a middling game for him. 3 should be unacceptable.

Trade Al Horford

That sorry Al got 2 of his shots block in five minutes of playing time. Then, as he has almost every year, he injured himself. Instead of working out to get strong during the off season he went playing with miss camel toe..Thanks Al.

Now what. This is a night mare short season. Al’s trade value keeps going down and down and down. We are never going to get a real center. We are struck with this awful display from Al.

“. . . if no Horford tomorrow, we’re down to Zaza at center ONLY. But with Diaw basically being Charlotte’s center, we may can get away with a smallish frontline.”

I wouldn’t count Diaw out. He’s actually been surprisingly effective so far this year. Even playing with all that extra weight and playing at the 5, he’s looked pretty effective at times. People tend to forget how mobile Diaw is for a big guy. I would definitely give him the edge over Zaza in that matchup, and by a long shot. He’s not a very good rebounder, but he can box out Zaza, which leaves us basically one reliable rebounder (Josh). Also, Charlotte does have some solid size and interior depth right now with both Byron Mullens and Biyombo. Mullens is a legit 7 footer and Biyombo, although slightly undersized at 6′9″, has a huge wingspan.

“Hibbert exposed the Hawks lack of Size. Does Mr. Sund know what a “Template” is??????????”

Hibbert usually gets owned by the Hawks front line (particularly, Horford). I would have liked to see if that was still the case tonight, but unfortunately, Al went down with an injury early. Anyway, I agree that we have a lack of size, but I don’t think Hibbert is really a guy who would “expose” it. More than anything, what was exposed tonight was our lack of interior depth. Zaza is our only reliable backup big man, and he’s been very inconsistent this season, which doesn’t leave us with much.

I GUARANTEE you we would’ve gone the same record in that stretch ANY of the last 3 years.

We won in Miami last year. Where’d we end up?

We beat Chicago last year after a huge rally. This year we blew them out (no homo).

I promise you last year or the year before’s team would’ve blown that CHI lead and lost to MIA at home sans LBJ/Wade.

This team is so predictable. I almost perfectly predicted that entire stretch of Houston – CHI (last Sat night). I had us losing to Chicago in that game.

That Houston game told me everything I need to know. We lose to the same f’ing teams every year. We are owning NJN (who beat us twice last year) and Charlotte, but we will lose to teams like Indy, Milwaukee, get swept by Texas, OKC, and split all the teams out West, BECAUSE WE HAVE THE SAME TEAM EVERY DAMN YEAR AND WE ARE MENTALLY FRAGILE
