Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

CharlotteTracy McGrady (knee) is out. “He wanted to play [last night] and give it a shot,” Larry Drew said. “We thought it would be best to keep him out tonight.” Donald Sloan is active.

  • Corey Maggette (hamstring) is out for the Bobcats.
  • During pregame there was little sign of the frustration and finger-pointing that followed the poor effort against the Heat last night. Hawks players were in good spirits.
  • Josh Smith: “I think with two previous disappointing losses, we need to have some kind of sense of being mad and wanting to take it out on somebody else. This will be the game to do it. We have to leave it all out on the court. If these two losses don’t piss you off, then I don’t know what’s going to get you mad. I know I am frustrated and angry. So I am just trying to walk around with a smile, but I know when I step in between those lines I’m going to play ba— out.”
  • Drew said he’s not concerned about the locker room coming apart amid the tough losses. The Hawks came over to the arena early for a team meeting.
  • Drew’s message: “There is no reason to hang their head. They were in two tough ballgames that could have gone either way. We had some miscues offensively and defensively down the stretch. In both games, if we make our free throws we win the game. Even with the miscues, if we make our free throws we win both games. It’s too early season to let something like this totally affect us. Most important thing is we learn from both games.”
  • Smith: “With the amount of games we have in so little time, everybody around here has to create a short memory. Obviously we have to play with some type of sense of urgency. But we can’t let the past affect us, because the past is the past and we have to look to the present and the future. And the present and the future is playing against a solid, blue-collar Bobcats team. We have always had problems in this building.”
  • Drew on what seems to be Teague’s declining confidence: “I don’t know what it is. I’ve got to stay in his ear. When he is aggressive, it makes us a totally different team. He’s got to understand he is going to have good ones, he is going to have bad ones. The secret is not to let the bad ones affect you. I think he has done that. I think he is letting some of the stuff get to his head a little bit. He missed a couple free throws in Chicago and then he came back and missed a couple free throws last night and mentally, he’s got to get tougher and push through that. He’s got to continue to be himself.”
  • Teague: “I’m fine. There’s been a lid on the basket the last couple days but it happens. It’s a long season.”
  • Zaza Pachulia said his calf is fine. So that’s not the reason for declining playing time lately.

Jason Collins sounds EXACTLY like Dave Chappelle’s impression of Tiger Woods in the Racial Draft skit.

I’M GLAD STACKHOUSE IS ON THIS TEAM BECAUSE IT’S OBVIOUS THERE IS A LACK OF LEADERSHIP. LARRY DREW HOLDS NOBODY ACCOUNTABLE AND DOESN’T HAVE THE BACKBONE TO BENCH ANYBODY.

Is this his first time ever realizing this?

TEAGUE AND MARVIN NEED TO PLAY WITH EARPIECE IN THEIR EARS AND EVERY TWO MINUTES NICK VAN EXEL SHOULD CALL THEIR MOMS DIRTY STREETWALKERS. ALSO INSULT SPONGEBOB TO MAKE MARVIN MAD.

JOSH SMITH NEEDS A SHOCK COLLAR OR AN IMPLANTED BRAIN CHIP.

Curious Hawks bloggers: Which of the two losses was worst:

Heat Loss (With out the Big 2)
or
Bulls Loss (Afterbhaving a 19 point lead)

The Heat loss was worse by far. The Bulls loss was on the road, and they played well for 3 quarters. They didn’t play well for any stretch of time in the Heat game, which was at home against a depleted team.

You guys do understand that Larry Drew gave this game away to the Heat right? You do understand that? The Hawks had a foul to give. They could have fouled on the inbounds pass, made them take the ball out again after more seconds ticket off the clock, then fouled on a second inbounds pass and put them on the line for two free throws, which would not have given them the lead.

Larry drew said he instructed them not to foul because he trusted the defense. The same defense that allowed two layups in the final minute of regulation? You guys do understand that Las Vegas Larry gave this game to the Miami Heat right?

LOL that’s putting it mildly; defensively, maybe he should ditch the switch since that’s how we loss in regulation against Miami. Still can’t figure out how Teague ended-up guarding Bosh in the paint that extended game.

Is he serious? Maybe it’s LD hanging sh#t on him by saying Kirk might start when he returns. Man LD is just like a politician! Do everyone a favour and just dont talk about Teague ever!

PS I like the idea of a collar on Josh and if he goes for a J he gets shocked!

I hope for better results tonight so GMJeJe can let last night’s game can leave his memory. I have never seen him so animated and enraged.
Now, can I ask, is Ivan the first guy, maybe outside of JC1, who we have brought in here, with a questionable background? So far, we have brought in corporate guys who tow the corporate standards. Stay within the guidelines of being an Atlanta Hawk, and the rest can be ignored.
Seriously though, Ivan deserves minutes in the rotation, and send a signal to Zaza that he better step it up or he can sit with Cheeseburger, who has as many minutes as Stack. Right there, I give you 3 roster spots that need to be upgraded.
Teague needs help and LD is simply leaving him to figure it out out there. No T-Mac, probably little bench production tonight. It will take Al and Joe to play harder and get more stats than they have all year. Will we ever see Al go 20/20 or Joe get 35 again? Both seem to not mind to defer to teammates.
Marvin, you have let EVERYONE take your slot in the late moments of a game. Step up fella, I think a 2nd rounder is on the horizon if we can dump that salary. And someone now tell me why we didn’t use our ‘Get Marvin out of here’ card? Its not that I don’t like him as a good guy, but man, knock someone around out there and get some production for this team.

And I’m not going to knock Charles for his opinion. He presents it better than anyone on that TNT roster. No one brings it like Charles and that’s why he’s in high demand.

LD is still learning on the fly which doesn’t bode well for us at this stage. The formula isn’t working, but what’s funny is all we have to do is hit our FTs, and we aren’t sitting here today trying to dump on the entire organization. A 90% FT rate would be nice for a change.

1.) Or Larry Drew could have put T-Mac in well before he cooled off and got too stiff to go back in?
2.) Or not call time out after 3 minutes at the start of the game and blasted their azzz and got their undivided attention so it would not have gotten to that.

Rather than make an issue of everything that went wrong last night, I’d like to talk about some potential possibilities and see what you think. First, IJohnson has made it all but impossible for Drew to ignore. Secondly, if he continues to perform consistently like he did last night, it could force the Hawks to seriously consider tradingJSmith. While I’m not a TRADE FANATIC, his continued solid performance would make it a lot easier for us to trade Josh and Horford for DHoward.

OC-DHoward-ZPachulia-JCollins
PF-IJohnson-Radmanovic
SF-MWilliams-TMac
SG-JJohnson-WGreen-JStackhouse
PG-JTeague-KHinrich-Pargo
That would be a much better team than our current team.
