Heat at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Tracy McGrady (knee) is probable for the Hawks. Dwyane Wade (foot) and LeBron James (ankle) are out for the Heat. James Jones and Shane Battier will replace them in the starting lineup.
  • McGrady after shootaround: “I will push through it, but I don’t want to push it to the point where it becomes a lingering thing. We will see how it goes. I think I will be OK.” Larry Drew pregame: “He’s going to try it. We will see how he is.”
  • Drew said the Hawks are mindful of managing McGrady’s minutes for the long term: “We knew when we got him, with the stretch of games we are about to play, we did not expect him to play three games in a row. That’s why we brought in pieces for certain situations.”
  • Al Horford on the team’s physical and mental state: “We feel good after yesterday. Not playing helped. It’s kind of good to regroup. Tonight is going to be a big game. We are looking forward to it at home.”
  • Marvin Williams: “We have only played six games so it’s not too bad. Talk to me at this time next week.”
  • The Hawks haven’t had a full practice since the start of the season. “I don’t think it’s hurting us,” Horford said. “We are a veteran team and we are aware of what we need to do. Coach let’s us know what we have to do.”
  • Drew on whether he will deploy the zone defense against Miami: “I’m sure they will make some adjustments. That’s the nature of this game. We don’t know how much we will use it; we don’t know if we will use it. We will just see how things are going and just try to take it from there.”
  • Drew said the Hawks may have used the zone too much against the Heat in the first game: “We might went to the well a few too many times. They made a couple adjustments during the course of the game and got some easy scores.”
  • Drew said the Hawks still want to slow the tempo: “We have a tendency to get a little stagnant at times with our shot selection and sometimes we go for the home run in trying to make plays. We’ve got to stay disciplined and let our offense work for us and make sure we take care of the basketball. ”
  • Drew said the Hawks are over their fade at Chicago: “The most important thing that we can take from that game is not that we built a 19-point lead, it’s how to play with a 19-point lead. Right now we have shown thus far—and the season’s early—but we don’t know how to play with a lead. That’s part of the growth if we want to be mentioned in the same breath with some of these other teams. You have to learn to play with a lead like that. It’s a discipline you have to have. But we ill learn from it.”

Game Time –

Please no repeat of Chicago… I certainly counted that victory before it was complete.

Put it to the Heat – NOW – Don’t take them any less lightly without LBJ and D-Crybaby-Wade

The fact that Dwyane Wade (foot) and LeBron James (ankle) are out for the Heat.:

Tells me that we got the Heat’s attention. I think they respect the fact that this team’s chances of winning tonight with them (DWADE and LBJ) being not at 100% is almost a concession.

I’m very nervous about this game.

Why do I have a feeling that we get VERY comfortable now that LeBron and Wade are out. What are the chances of us losing this game?

“What are the chances of us losing this game?”

The chances are decent because of this team’s fragile psyche. If LeBron and D-Wade had been 100% for tonight’s game and the Hawks won, I would be concerned about losing at Charlotte tomorrow night. That’s been the character of this team… able to compete with the best in the league one night and lose to a lottery team the next. And Larry Drew has not been able to do anything to correct that.

@ Najeh Davenpoop –

Why do you think Marvin Williams completely disappeared in the 4th Qtr of the Bulls game? Helps to explain why he’s out of the game in the 4th qtr of almost all Hawks game thus far this year and all last year with J.Crawford.

He rarily ever finishes a game the way he starts…All we needed was a little bit out of him the last game, or for our alledge superstar JJ to have given us something we would have one. Your thoughts?

Matchups

PG: Teague vs Chalmers
G: Johnson vs Battier
F: Marvin vs Jones
PF: Smith vs Bosh
C: Horford vs Anthony

X factors McGrady ( Hawks ) – Norris Cole ( Heat )

The start of this game will be interesting. You’ll probably see a heavy dose of Bosh, just to see if he can get going right off the bat. Expect Battier and Jones to take quite a few 3s in transition. Norris Cole is the guy to watch though. He’s the one who can get his shot off at any time, and may give Teague and/or Pargo some problems when he enters the game.

What we don’t want to happen is for some of our key guys to get in early foul trouble. Also, we really don’t need Miami’s frontline playing above their heads.

I’m expecting a borderline superstar type game from Bosh. Hawks should eventually pull away though.

If Lebron is in uniform, he’ll play if this game is tight in the 4th quarter.

I am always going to blame the stars and the coach before I blame a role player. If Joe, Al, and Josh make the plays they are supposed to make, the Hawks win that game. If LD doesn’t wait too long to make substitutions, the Hawks win that game. Marvin is a role player. Counting on him to do what the stars are supposed to do is futile.

More crap quotes from Drew and the players. It’s the same guys making the same stupid errors for several years now. You’d think these guys should be knowledgable enough by now not to make the same dumb errors. How many games have they lost over the years because of stupidity?

Just one example from the end of the CHI game when the Hawks could have still won it: JJ dribbles for a 100 years before taking a lousy shot. Then he jacks up a quick 3 pointer, or was it a 2 pointer? Doesn’t matter. How old is JJ? He hasn’t learned yet.

4Eva . . . Webber’s point was that if Bosh was TRULY part of the ‘Big 3″, he should be able to elevate his game to the point that they could win without Wade and Lebron.

I do expect Bosh to have a pretty good game tonight. This is Bosh’s chance to really step out of the shadow of Wade and Lebron, if only for one night. If he doesn’t “show out”, people won’t take him serious as being part of the “Big 3″.

The great thing about tonight, is that you SHOULD NOT have to listen to 35% of the crowd ooing and ahhing over each play the Heat make. The tagalong fans that come to Philips to watch a superstar from another team will be highly disappointed tonight. So hopefully, those fans will cheer for the Hawks tonight.

Really important to get off to a fast start, they will have basically no guys that can create their own shot so we should have solid rebounding numbers tonite since they will rely heavily on jumpshots.
