Atlanta Hawks at Bulls: Game thread

Chicago–Regular lineup for the Hawks. All Hawks except Kirk Hinrich (shoulder) and Donald Sloan (inactive) are available. Ronnie Brewer is starting in place of Rip Hamilton (groin) for the Bulls.

  • Hinrich had his eight-week checkup today. “Good news,” Hinrich said. “They are going to let me start doing all of the non-contact stuff with the team. A couple weeks from now, we will see how it goes from there. It’s one of those deals where I’m excited to do some things. Hopefully I can get my conditioning right and keep strengthening. I have some weakness. I need to get stronger before I get out there.”
  • Larry Drew said he hasn’t decided on Hinrich’s role when he returns: “We will see how that goes with Kirk. We are certainly going to bring him along slowly. But as far as who is going to be the starter, I haven’t made a decision.”
  • Drew doesn’t think a zone defense can be as effective against the Bulls as it was against Miami: “You are talking about two totally different beasts. With having to defend Wade and LeBron I think it’s totally different from having to defend Rose. With Rose I think he may be more explosive. Both LeBron and D-Wade are very explosive but Rose’s explosion is a little bit different. His ability to get into the paint is more of a havoc than LeBron and Wade. LeBron and Wade are more open court. Rose can get into the basket open court and half court.”
  • Jeff Teague is back in the building where he started the best run of his young career. He said he’s not still drawing confidence from those moments against Rose, though: “I’m a confident player, anyway. I don’t really get into the matchup last year. He’s going to come back with something totally different.”
  • Vladimir Radmanovic is 0 for 10 from the field in the last two games, including 0 for 4 on 3-pointers. He passed up a couple open attempts at Miami. Drew wants him to keep shooting. “We brought him here to shoot when he’s open,” Drew said. “He hasn’t had his typical type games but I am not going to instruct him to stop shooting. He’s got to keep putting them up.”
  • Al Horford had a productive game around the basket against Chris Bosh. Joakim Noah is tougher by multiple degrees. “I think you have to try to match his energy as much as you can,” Horford said. “He is going to bring that every night and I think that’s what makes him such a great player.”
  • Josh Smith was 1 for 7 on long 2s against the Heat before settling down. “He got into a jump-shot mode,” Drew said. “When he came out that first time, we spoke to him at that time. Then he just kind got it together and started putting it in the floor and getting to the basket, which is a strength of his because he’s long and he can elevate. He did settle down.”
  • The Hawks are playing their sixth game in eight days. “We are doing OK,” Horford said. “At this point everybody has got something that is wrong with them. That’s just a part of it. Tonight is a big game for us so we are going to come out here and focus on tonight and tomorrow hopefully we will get to rest and recover.”

Let’s Get It On! !

Bulls coach Thibodeau: “McGrady is a great player,” Thibodeau said. “He has been a great player for a long time. He’s been derailed some by injuries the last couple years. But he’s a complete player. Everyone talks about his scoring. I think the best part of his game is his decision-making. He’s a great pick-and-roll player, great passer, great vision. He’s extremely smart. “They’re a tough team. They’re playing as well as anyone in the league.”

Why does Larry Drew give so much love to Willie Green? Thus far, Green has not shown anything of value. Why not let Ivan get some of those minutes. Green jacks up shots like there is no tomorrow.

Shouldn’t be that hard. Give him all of Green’s minutes and at least half of Pargo’s minutes, and let him take some of T-Mac’s minutes every now and then if T-Mac looks like he might be wearing down.

I agree Najeh. Matter of fact, cut Green or Pargo altogether. Once Kurt comes back, keeping both of them becomes redundant.

Just as long as he doesn’t insert Hinrich into the starting lineup, establishing Kurt’s role should be easy.

The question will be, who does Drew choose as his PG to close games?

Teague or Hinrich?

Can’t stand ESPN – Everything I saw on TV today wasn’t about how well the Hawks played, but rather how the “ZONE” affects Miami.

Hell, even the highlights had 7 highlights of the Heat and only 4 highlights of the Hawks. Had the Heat one, it would have have been 12 highlights of the Heat and ZERO of the Hawks.

Jeff Teague needs to play alongside Joe Johnson . . period. Both guys benefit from playing with each other. Hinrich is in the final year of his contract, and will most likely NOT be re-signed, unless he takes a significant pay cut.

Hinrich may not like it, but this has to be Teague’s time now. Bring Kurt off the bench and give him 20 – 25 minutes a night at the PG and SG spots.

“I can’t believe that Drew is considering taking the keys away from Teague. I am speechless.”

If Marvin is going to be the first one off the floor, I wish LD would bring him back in when he normally brings in Green. I may be picking on Green too much but I really don’t see what he brings to the table, and as long as Marvin is playing well there’s no reason his minutes should be so limited. May as well increase his minutes at the expense of the weakest link on the bench.

Astro,

Okay. So what nifty little Jedi mind tricks does he have for Josh…Marvin…Al…and other established starters? Haven’t seen ‘em yet.

Not that I expect you to have the answers, mind you. Something just seems a little inconsistent here. What IS consistent is LD answering a lineup question with “I haven’t decided yet.”

So while you may be seeing something ahead of time that I’m not prepared to recognize, I’ll reserve judgement on the mind tricks. Especially when they only seem directed towards one guy.

As for Teague, he keeps talking confident, and really….I haven’t seen the kind of timid play from him that was evident many times last season.

Boozer never struck me as the hard working type. When you aren’t a hard offseason worker, you slide over the years, as your athleticism fades, especially if you’ve been injured enough times.

Boozer is 30, and he’s experienced a number of injuries. And…again…he never struck me as being a very hard worker. He did enough (like so many guys) to get that last BIG contract, and guess what? Chicago has been stiffed again with another large contract to a PF. Boozer hasn’t gone off the deep end the way Ben Wallace did, but the comparison still stands….paid a lot of money to have a major impact down low, though this time it was supposed to be on the offensive end. FAIL.

The Bulls thought they signed a 20 and 10 guy in Boozer. Well, he ain’t that anymore.

Ask Philly what that feels like (Elton Brand)….

Just a reminder to all of those who were so afraid of the Bulls DEF. THE ATLANTA HAWKS CAN PLAY DEF TOO, AND WE ARE THE ONES LEADING THE NBA IN TOTAL DEF. I also said the Bulls were as vulnerable to a zone DEF as the Heat, and we’ve seen that so far in the 1st half. They are bigger, but we’re quicker, faster, more versatile, and have more OFF weapons. And our DEF is definitely better, because we have a SOLID perimeter DEF, with Pargo, Green, JJ and Teague. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boozer had knee problems in Utah too, and there are too many examples of players for whom knee problems never really go away. Maybe if he had worked harder on his rehab he would be a better player now, but maybe not. One thing about him is that even when he was healthy in his best years in Utah, he struggled mightily against taller players. I remember one year when the Jazz and Lakers played in the first round and Boozer was damn near invisible.

NORTHCYDE-This is exactly what I expected from this team before the season started, which is why I was so positive about how they would perform, regardless of the schedule. But the thing that got me really excited about our current roster was our ability to get SOLID PERIMETER DEF out of our 4 man guard rotation. I knew it would cause our interior DEF to noticeably improve. LDrew’s MOTION OFF is really giving the Bulls DEF fits. Even though we’re not hitting our outside shots, we’re executing our half court OFF well enough to maintain a comfortable lead. Let’s hope we can keep it up, because we’re in the same position Miami was in last night before we came back and won.

I think Teague does sometimes try too hard to “find the balance” as his estimable Jedi Master Coach has mandated that he do.

Being a good pg is about making good decision. The riddle is that balance comes when you remain aggressive always and do your best to make the right decision. You gotta feel it more than you find it…

The shame of this, is the same ATL radio stations that virtually ignored our great win over Miami, will clown the Hawks and especially Joe Johnson for the loss tonight.

This is what Gearon talks about, when concerning the Hawks.

JJ definitely deserves at least 1/2 blame for this game though ( Free throw shooting the other 1/2 ). He can’t shoot 3 – 17 FG . .and only shoot 2 FTs. It’s the fatal flaw in his game, and he needs to find a way to fix that.

Just wasted a great defensive performance for the first 3 quarters.

He let them get confidence back and never put any players back in to stop them before it was too late. Bad play by Teague not giving Joe the ball back immediately when the shot clock was off and we had the ball. Then he misses 2 FTs. Too much iso JOE. Greg Anthony made a great point before that last play.

He said that he’d like to see JJ get the ball in the “Carmelo Anthony area” . . which is 10 – 17 feet from the basket. At least for there, he could catch and turn toward the goal, and have a chance to get to the rim or draw the foul.

But when you’re 25 feet away, it’s hard to get any type of quality shot . . especially since JJ isn’t the fastest guard in the world.

JJ’s last 4 shots of that 4th quarter were from 22 feet and out. Just can’t have that.

They can give the Bulls all they want any time. We just need to learn exactly what we want to do in those late game/4th quarter possessions. The Bulls know Rose will have the ball. The Hawks don’t really KNOW who will have the ball or what plays to run. And that’s the difference.

Very tough loss, but I’m not as upset as I thought I would be. The HAWKS actually didn’t play that great, except for the start of the game. They had some nice plays and some good ball movement, but the bench really gave up the lead at the beginning of the 4th. Teague’s misses were big, but I’m partial to Jeff so I’m not going to hammer him. Hopefully this loss will help the team with its mental toughness and let them know that the top 2 teams in the East aren’t that much better than them. The mental toughness also goes for LD. He should have used more timeouts early in the 4th and also brought back the starters. He could have tried to sub Tracy back in the game late for a short stretch, but I do appreciate him leaving his best defensive team in the game. Clearly the Hawks are very good when they run their offensive, hopefully this will be another step towards being able to execute under pressure. I think we’re a Playoff team, so all these games are just dress rehearsals, for the really games in April!

Josh was the player of the game because they all sucked on offense. This will be the one game out of 20 that he gets the player of the game for the Hawks. Last thing and then I’m out of here.

Why not T-Mac down at the end of the game? I’m so f’ing sick of the ball automatically going to Joe Johnson at crucial moments. What has he ever done to earn that right? Just run a f’ing. This idea that one player HAS to touch the ball on any major possession is just stupid.

Since it must be written in the bible that a team can only look to one guy when it needs a hoop, why not a guy that can actually make a clutch shot? I vote T-Mac. I’ve seen every other “core” player wilt in big moments, why not give T-Mac a shot? We know none of the other guys can perform when needed.

Jeff Teague proved he is not worthy of all the love he gets on here. What a total choke job.

Did Josh Smith not hit two clutch jumpers in the 4th? Was he not getting to the free throw line? Was he not making great passes to teammates, rebounding and protecting the rim?

Lay off him. You won’t appreciate what he does until he’s gone. He had 15 rebounds, key blocks, good assists. All you guys do is focus on the negative.

Since I’ve been here the past 5 years watching the Hawks, they remind me of the Heat of the 90’s. Good enough to win 50 games but not good enough to beat the (Ewing) Knicks or the (Jordan) Bulls in a seven game series. Hawks are close but they are a superstar and a good coach away from reaching the ECF or the Ship. JMO

That was a head scratcher. 14 point lead in the 4th quarter just got Rosed. They stop the double team on the pick at the top of the key. In the mist of the run, offensively Josh kept ending up with the ball at the end of the shot clock. During this time Joe was running from the ball, yet Drew want Joe to take the last shot…dude was having a bad shooting game.

Free throws, Free throws, Free throws caused us the game in the end. Miss technicals, bad form from Horford at the end & Teague shot just flat. That 4 free throws missed in the last 30 seconds of game.

This game was in hand, just needed game management entering the fourth…oh well time to finish off the Crown!!

I am starting to believe in this team’s defense. The offense still goes hot and cold depending on Teague’s aggressiveness; when he is not aggressive, like in much of the 4th quarter, they revert to Woody mode. The bench still hasn’t sold me that it is of the quality needed to win in the playoffs (Zaza in particular was very disappointing in this game). And no team wins with free throw shooting this poor.

With all that said, they just lost by 2 to the team with the best record in the league last year on the second game of a back to back. It was a completely avoidable, self-inflicted loss, but still not a back breaker considering the opponent.

Joe’s 3/17 from the field and missed potential game winner don’t bother me as much as the 2/2 from the line. If you can’t make shots, at least go inside and draw contact.

One of these days Teague will become assertive enough to go get the ball and make plays rather than watching his teammates jack up shots. The sooner that happens, the sooner the Hawks will have a consistently competent offense to go with their impressive defense.

Cant blame this on Josh, or Marvin, or Al. Front line worked their butts off. We were under coached in the 4th. No movement, no passing, no PG in the offense. If we werent going to let Teague do anything in the 4th, should have put in another shooter and made Rose play some D. We got passive. Teague was hesitant to shoot, Marvin settled for the jumper with the lane wide open. We found ways to lose instead of doing what got us the 19 point lead.

Josh Smith will on most night have good stats, but the problem is when Josh takes that ill fated jumpshot or get a rebound & tries to run break and make a bad pass or get fouled on a un coordinated move to the basket. Every team in the league wants Josh to shoot jumpers or go to the line in crunch time. Soon they will will come up with a Hack a Josh strategy. With Josh it Timing not his Stats impact.

Same can be said for LeBron in the playoffs last year, he had a triple double game and he was not present in the 4th quarter of NBA Finals games. His stats had no impact on the outcome.

Josh’s game is kinda like, taking a gun to a knife fight, GOOD IDEA, but leaving the bullets at home, BAD JUDGEMENT!!

yodaddybrother,

He was 3-6 on FT, That only getting to the line 3 times the whole game, it was also only 50%. Wow he hit 2 clutch jumpers that means he gets the go ahead to shot more. Yes, he does look good at passing sometimes but you don’t remember some of the crazy passes to no one? And like I said he looks good on defense but his offense kills us.I loved him active on boards

He should be a guy that could easily get 10+ FTA a game. Yes, he calmed down this game on jump shots but we all know that Josh will be back. He should not be acting like a PG at all. And I wasn’t basing it all on this game just the overall Josh. He did look better then others but he also looked bad on Offense.

Joe was the biggest killer here along with LD. LD could have won this but he made many, many mistakes in the 4th. That is something you do not want to do with a good team like this because they feed off of it.

The Hawks are a good basketball team. They didn’t even play well and were up 20 in the 3rd. The league MVP brought his team back in the 4th quarter and he’s done it twice already this season.

Hawks fans should be encouraged. Back To Back after beating the Heat at home. This was their 6th game in 8 days. They got tired which explains 34 points in the 4th quarter (after only giving up 26 in the first half). It explains the free throw shooting, which the Hawks are actually pretty good at.

The Bench helped extend the lead and the bench also helped give up the lead. Joe Johnson had a serious off night on offense. Yet still they hel d a comfortable lead.

There’s a difference between reasons and excuses.

When you cut through all the analysis it still comes down to one thing with the Hawks. As currently constructed, they will never win a game of consequence. They will do whatever it takes to lose. I’ve been a huge critic of LD on this blog.
However, at this time, LD is doing a fine job.

But he was not to blame.
Individual players were not to blame.
It was a team loss in a team game.

Neither was Teague.

Yet we lost by 2 points.

I can understand why horford is all the way out on the perimeter during the course of the game and especially with the game on the line. He wants to be the hero so bad that it may stomach turn. With 7 seconds on the clock he should have given the ball to JJ. The hawks already had the lead. Instead mr Bone Head draws a foul and bricks. Then he is all the way on the perimeter with 1.2 seconds bringing extra bodies to JJ. Thanks mr. Bone head Hoford.

The thing i hate is that when it looks like Marvin may have the hot hand early we stop going to him and sub him for Tmac..But if Tmac is playing great,Marvin still rides the pine!!

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Al Horford Surprised By Trade Talk

Dec 31 11:28a by Kris Willis

Read More: Joe Johnson (G – ATL), Josh Smith (F – ATL), Dwight Howard (C – ORL), Al Horford (C – ATL), Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks

After an initial report that the Atlanta Hawks had engaged in trade talks with with the Orlando Magic involving Dwight Howard, Hawks beat writer Michael Cunningham weighed in on the original report that the trade with Atlanta was centering around Joe Johnson and Josh Smith.

Cunningham confirmed that trade talks between the two teams had taken place but that it was unlikely that Josh Smith was a part of them. Cunningham further cites that the Hawks would be reluctant to include Smith because of the hope that the presence of his child-hood friend would entice Howard to sign a long-term extension with the club. That would leave the deal to center around either Johnson and or center Al Horford.

In a recent interview with ESPN Radio, Horford was asked about the rumors and was genuinely taken aback.

“Wow,” Horford said. “I guess I’m heading back to Florida. … I don’t know, that’s interesting, I know that Dwight is from here, but as far as I know, this is the first I’ve heard of it. But it’ll be interesting.”

The two-time All-Star Horford would seem more appealing to the Magic due to his University of Florida roots and the fact that while he is somewhat undersized, he does have experience playing the center position.

It is also important to note that the Atlanta Hawks are not on Howard’s list of preferred destinations and any trade would presumably happen without an assurance that Howard would re-sign with the club.

•Larry Drew said he hasn’t decided on Hinrich’s role when he returns: “We will see how that goes with Kirk. We are certainly going to bring him along slowly. But as far as who is going to be the starter, I haven’t made a decision.”

All NBA is what he is.. Very limited offensive skills but he makes the most of his limitations and it got him two Allstar invites.

Are you going to win Championships with him at the 4 or 5?

Does it snow in Bimini?

Hinrich is better than Teague who doesnt know how to get his teammates involved. Hes a ball hog who is turnover prone and is too much of a boy to have an impact in a mans world.

Are you going to win Championships with him at the 4 or 5? You are going to watch it on tv with him after the second round. Hes too soft at either position.

PG Slim you are more and more of a joke as the days go by. Hinrich averaged 3.3 assists a game with the Hawks last year, I hope Teague is traded for his personal good.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME:

THIS TEAMS SUCKS AT SHOOTING FRRE THROWS AND DREW GOT OUTCOACHED BY THIBODEAU.

FOUR GAMES IN FIVE DAYS AND YOU’RE RELYING ON YOUR STARTERS TO HOLD DOWN THE MVP??? C’MON LARRY AUERBACH, THIS IS WHY YOU MAKE THE BIG BUCKS! THIBS IS DRAWING UP PLAYS, WHILE AUERBACH RELIES ON ISO BALL FROM TIRED LEGS. GOTTA MANAGE THE MINUTES BETTER AND YOU COULD’VE STOLEN IT. NOBODY WINS BACK TO BACK IN CHI AND MIA. HAWKS WORE DOWN IN THE 4TH QUARTER WHEN ROSE AND DENG WHERE GETTING THEIR SECOND WIND, BUT DREW DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO SAVE THEM.

Big Dog / Hatter / “whomever”

Al got the 1st foul setting a screen
[7 or 9 sec ?]
Yes he missed FT’s, as did Teaguer.
However;
Al has been a consistent and clutch FT shooter in the past.
[remember last yr when B.Griffin took him out (cheap shot)]
Al got up from that nasty fall and made two huge, clutch FT’s.

Last shot:
If Al was near Joe;
most likely the play was for him to set a screen.
Which Joe chose not use.

Poor play designed by LD from the get go !
(looked like somethin’ Woody drew up)
