Atlanta Hawks at Heat: Game thread

Miami–All Hawks except Kirk Hinrich (shoulder) are good to go. Donald Sloan is inactive.

  • Hinrich is to see his doctor tomorrow but Larry Drew still isn’t sure when he will return. “Hopefully we will get him back soon,” Drew said.
  • Mike Miller (hernia), Eddy Curry (hip) and Mickell Gladness (foot) are out for the Heat.
  • Josh Smith has some swelling in his right knee. He had an ice pack on it at shootaround. Reminded of the spectacular dunk he had during Atlanta’s 93-89 victory here last season, Smith said: “I have to try to re-live it.”
  • Marvin Williams said he suffered nose bleeds while sleeping in two of the past three nights. “I thought my nose was running, so I wipe and there is blood everywhere,” he said. “It used to happen me to when I was a kid but it’s been a long time.”
  • Drew on Williams: “He’s playing much better basketball than last year. He’s looking for his shot more. I’ve given him more freedom to be a little bit more creative with his shot. When he’s on the floor making shots he’s a big weapon for us. Chances are teams are going to double team us a lot with Joe [Johnson] so it’s important we spread [with] the shooting.”
  • Drew on splitting minutes between Williams and Tracy McGrady, who finished the game at Houston: “I’ve been just kind of going with feel. It seems like T-Mac is starting to get his legs under him a little bit. I thought he played really well in the Houston game. At the same time I have to be mindful of the minutes he gets. I don’t want to wear him down.”
  • Drew said the Hawks should draw confidence from winning at Miami last season but cautioned: “We are looking at a different [Heat] team. From the games I’ve seen they look like they are a team on a mission. You can’t get into a run-and-shoot game with this team. They run with force. They run in waves.”
  • Al Horford on winning here last season: “It’s a new season. If we can take anything from it, we have done it here before. But obviously we have to validate it this season.”
  • This is the fifth game in seven days for the Hawks. “Physically, I think we are OK,” Drew said. A little mental fatigue may start to settle in a little bit. Something we talked about before we started is it’s something you have got to push through. All teams are going through it. We cannot and will not use that as an excuse. We will play the hand that has been dealt to us. It can take a toll on you if you allow it to. It’s imperative that they take care of themselves.”

I am just hoping the Hawks can play a respectable game. This is also a game where someone on the bench is going to have to show that they can be a defensive stopper.

If Hawks come with the same energy/effort they did in Houston, Miami is gonna smoke them. Houston’s defence wasn’t so great, but jumpshooting Hawks could not make shots, turned the ball over, missed free throws…could go on and on.

Also watch how the refs call this game in favor of Miami.

I can’t believe Solomon Jones is still available and the Hawks haven’t signed him.

“Paul Coro: The #Suns waived Garret Siler after the game. The roster is back to the 13-man minimum”

Or maybe the Hawks could bring Siler back.

Teague with another nice shot. Kinda lucky, but the effort was there.

Is there somebody on the Atlanta roster that will hustle as hard for rebounds and loose balls as Joel Anthony will?

Ivan Johnson, maybe? Not that he’ll ever see the court (unless we’re up by 46 points with 20 seconds left in the game).

If Drew wants to shake things up, that might be a way to do it. Don’t worry. He could foul out in just 3 minutes. So if it’s a mistake, it won’t be long-lived.

Big Ray

Vlad actually handles the ball and passes well, and can even get a steal here or there and use his size to defend.

However, none of that shows up against an uber-athletic and talented trio like Bosh/Wade/Lebron.

So yeah, if he’s not hitting his shots against a team like this, or rebounding and getting into passing lanes, he’s not much help. He has to do those things and fill in the gaps.

Meanwhile, Marvin CAN defend against a team like this, at least adequately. So he needs to do that AND hit the boards. And he’s not doing it.

This offense should run through JJ, he is the only one that draws a double-team. Basketball is simple, make two guard one. Anyway, until Drew and everyone else realizes it, the problem with this team is JOSH SMITH, he is the same player he was his rookie year. Horford look like the only starting big man that seems to want to go in the paint anymore. What in the world is up with Josh these days? He took a lot of lazy jumpers last season, but at least he used to mix up his game and drive inside or attempt to post up. It seems like almost all of his attempts now are jump shots.

Also, for those of you who talk about Al and Josh not being able to create their own shots, they are going to have to right now. Al isn’t getting easy looks like he has in the past. The Hawks aren’t running much pick-and-pop anymore, and when Al is open his teammates are often failing to find him as well. Josh’s teammates are only hitting him when he’s open on the wring for jumpshots since that is where Josh has been camping out.

Right now, the main way Josh is soring is either from the line or when a jump shot goes in. In Al’s case, his main source of scoring is when he’s been given the ball in the post. Personally, I think Al is fine creating his shot and scoring in 1 vs. 1 situations down low, however, once teams start helping or doubling, he’s basically forced to pass. We don’t have any great playmaking on the floor, so for Josh and Al to be most effective, they definitely need to work on creating and scoring for themselves. Either that, or we need some significant improvement from our playmaking guards.

lets get one thing straight. The Hawks aren’t “letting” the Heat do anything. That’s what the Heat do. They get out and get easy points and they do it on every team in the league. Lebron James MVP, D. Wade Finals MVP, Bosh All Star. They will get in the crevaces (sp?) split the defense and get dunks and layups. Deal with it.

The key is not to back down and capitalize when they make mistakes. The Hawks have done a nice job of this so far although it could be better.

FTPB,

AJ,

Hawks keep it close throughout tonight’s game and lose in a nail-biter. Teague & Smith have big games. And you can quote me on that..

Teague is having a big game, and Hawks keeping it close. As for Josh having a big game…1-6 from the field, and 2 turnovers.

He does have 3 rebs, 2 assists, and 1 steal, but I am assuming you had bigger numbers in mind

Ron

January 2nd, 2012
8:43 pm

Josh is 1-6 right now. Has anyone been keeping track of how many of those attempts were jump shots?

I’m not trying to put Josh down, he’s done some other good things, I’d just really like his jump shooting trend to come to an end. A jump shot for him once in a while is okay when he’s in rhythm, but I feel like he’s gone over board so far this season with thinking hes a wing scorer.

On a positive note, I like Josh’s instinct to look for the open man. He made a perfect pass on that lob to Al earlier. Also, while Josh does turn the ball over sometimes with risky passes, I really like that he’s often looking for his teammates. Sometimes Josh seems like he’s angry with his teammates and just wants to shoot the ball by himself, but when he’s focused, he’s pretty unselfish, and I’ve got to commend him for that. With Jeff and Joe doing most of the ball-handling, we need all the playmaking we can get from everyone.

“lets get one thing straight. Deal with it.”

Exactly yodaddy, you can compare them to Drew Brees. No way in hell you’re going to stop him, but the key to beating him is to contain him. Same goes for the Heat, they are going to score points, and sometimes easily. You can’t back down and you especially can’t let them have too many 2nd chance points.

Josh is good for highlight dunks, but if know one shows up, are they seen? lol. For all the blocked shots Josh gets, he gives up more points by playing poor on ball defense, and no hustle and poor positioning underneath. Josh has the lowest b-ball IQ in the league, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, i’m curious how much and how long his offer(s) will be.

1) MUST come out ready to play in the third quarter. Fail to do this, Miami will go on a run, and the Hawks will have to work like the devil to get close…only to fall in the end, due to DWade hitting big shots and/or Lebron getting lots of phony calls (and trips to the foul line). It’s scripted, we’ve seen this before. So has Miami, and they haven’t forgotten. Can Larry remember how this works and actually get his guys to listen?

2) Hawks are down only 3 despite letting Miami shoot 54% from the field, and only getting to the charity stripe for two attempts.

3) Vlad, Zaza, and T-Mac helped us not get destroyed on the boards until two of our starters on the front line decided to get in on the act. Up until that point, only Joe Johnson seemed concerned with rebounding. Clown the Euros and if you want, but they’ve been saving our butts in some areas.

4) I’ll give it a few more games before declaring Marvin has rediscovered his invisibility cloak. He’s not going to score well in every matchup. Lebron’s not about to let him go off, and neither will Deng in Chicago. But…Marvin can hold his own on defense when motivated to do so, and has the size/length to bother (not stop) guys like Lebron. He can also hold his own on the boards. The Hawks need him to do that, even if they don’t need him to take and make all sorts of shots. If he does this, we haven’t lost the “new” Marvin. If he doesn’t, then a healthy back didn’t have as much to do with his production and play the last couple of years as has been claimed.

Or claim that every long shot attempt came because his teammates passed him the ball with a nano second left on the clock or because his coach allows him to play on the perimeter or his offensive issues should be ignored because of his tremendous shotblocking or… Come on, you know you’re out there, what are the reasons again?

Ron

One note on Teague. This is not meant to be an insult, but I think it’s pretty clear that Teague is at his best when he’s being aggressive looking to score. He can make some nice dishes sometimes, but for the most part, he is most effective finishing plays on his own. If Drew and Teague’s teammates continue to try and mold him into something he is not (a pure point guard), I think Teague will be effective. You have to let your players play to their strengths if you want to get the most out of them.

It would be great to have true point guard on the team, but those are tough to find, and that is becoming a thing of the past. Teague is still the best option for point guard on this roster by far, and I have no problem with him being on the court at the point while he is being aggressive.

For the team to be successful though, we are going to need other players to make adjustments. Josh and Al need to crash the offensive boards more and we need Al to continue to work on his post game. He looks like he’s improving, but we need more. We also need Marvin to be ready to catch and shoot the ball at any time. He probably won’t get the ball much, but he needs to be ready.

We also need Josh to do little things like flash to the paint each time he sees his man help off of him. He may not get the ball in those scenarios, but he needs to at least make the effort to get into the paint when he’s open. Little things like that will help out quite a bit.

As a former Josh Smith apologist, I can define what the condition means – when you avidly magnify the positives a person brings and minimize the negatives (or act like you’re ignoring them). There are times when the positives do NOT outweight the negatives.

You know, like when normally we could point to Josh’s incredible shot-blocking prowess and steals as something that overcomes the occasional turnover and bad jumper. Only problem is when you look up and suddenly its that “no rim defense” center that wants to play PF who happens to be leading the team in blocks. And instead of leading in that category, you’re vying for the lead in turnovers and missed jumpers.

So now people like me get to be labeled “bashers.” What a twisted world we have in Blogland.

Fair enough. I don’t think most of the people throwing that word around use it in the same way though.

Josh Smith is the team’s leading rebounder, second leading shot blocker, and second leading assist man. His shot selection sucks.

Regarding Joe’s efficiency, I may be wrong, but I don’t think Bibby and Kirk ever handled the ball as much as Teague has handled it in this game and in the 3 wins this season. As much sh-t as Joe gets sometimes, much of it undeserved, he looks like a totally different player when he just has to focus on scoring. Can’t double him with the point guard when the point guard can actually play.

Najeh ,

Fair enough. I’m bothered that Josh leads the team with 7.3 rpg. Not because HE leads the team, but because it’s such a low number. I mean, Marvin should be averaging close to that if he’s so damn healthy. Al Horford should be WELL above that, he’s been a near 10 rpg guy for his entire short career.

Josh can do better, but being lighter (which is good for him) and not being a great fundamentals guy, he has to get those hustle-and-jump boards. And you know what? I don’t care. Get ‘em however you can. Just get him.

Al has no excuse. He knows the blocking out fundamentals really well, has more weight and strength, and has enough athletic ability to get hustle boards. Same for Marvin…

I am so impressed with the Hawks, especially after such a slow start. Can you say good coaching?

Drew called a timeout in the 1st qrt when it seemed Hawks had given up. They went to the zone defence and immediately shut the Heat down. After that, it was a matter of chipping of the lead until they took the lead, and held on to it, Miami has been a bad half court team.

Great win! Now Hawks can have confidence going in to Chicago!

Chicago is different. They have the advantage at pg, for one thing. Yes, Teague held his own against Rose in the playoffs. But he’s not Rose’s equal, and Rose can’t be stopped most nights. Teague need only hold his own and try to contain Rose.

In the meantime, our advantage will be at SG, where the Bulls have nobody who should be able to hang with JJ.

Marvin can’t let Deng have what he wants, and Josh can’t let Boozer do what he wants, although that job may fall to Al Horford. Either way…

Al – I’ll take 16 and 9 all season long, to be honest. 16 and 10 is better, but I ain’t complaining. Thing is, if Al plays tough down low and lets the pick-and-pop develop off of it, he is capable of putting up more than that against Chicago. Thing is, he can also draw some of the defense and help open up things for Josh.

Josh – the more he goes at the rim, the more he’ll hurt Chicago. If so, he’ll put 20+ against the Bulls. They can’t guard or stop him. If he keeps up with the jumper ish, we’ll struggle.

Zaza/T-Mac/Vlade a good bench core at the 3/4/5. We struggle at the other two spots. Looking for the return of Hinrich….

Tracy might be the hero, but Jeff was the ONLY Hawk that kept Hawks in it early, and gave them a chance to stay close, to eventually give the Heats their 1st loss of the season.

I’ll say good coaching when I see the same type of effort against a different/tougher team (like Houston/Chicago), when substitutions continue to be good and appropriate for the situation at hand instead of making sense to nobody at home, in the arena, or in the press box, and when the system works from game to game.

Had to be harsh, but there is inconsistency at every facet right now, if you ask me. Yes, a lot of it is how the players play. But there are times where I just don’t see the adjustments or smart substitutions. It doesn’t matter what you say – if you can’t get the guys to buy in or listen, you can’t do the job.

With Houston, I thought Drew had a horrible substitution pattern, taking out Marvin while he was hot and Tmac not doing much, but I think with this game, he might be getting it.

Tonight, Zaza was hot headed and volatile, and Drew didn’t play him anymore, and he kept Tracy in instead of Marvin. So I think as a coach, he is coming around.

I know all the focus is on the players as it should be. And I am not generally speaking a huge LD fan. But his timeout when it was 88-84, and the ensuing Hawks run, is why I will always say he is better than Woody ever was. No way in HELL the Hawks under Woody come out of a timeout with a play like that and a run like that.

Huge win for the Hawks. You better believe they are going to get some national media love for this, especially since it is the Heat’s first loss of the season. Now the trick is to keep it up over the next several games. They want to be considered an elite team, well, this is their chance.

seems to keep things in perspective.. pre-season, fans booing, his game/contributions, role etc. not to mention, he’s been a superstar in this league. his interviews are pretty candid. surpisingly, i didnt know he was as out spoken, you look at him and he appears to be coasting..

one of the few former stars, premier scorers, who after their prime.. able to reform their game, and contribute at an above avg level. he wouldve actually been a good pick up last year. i can only hope his approach and prowess is contagious..

I’m not a supporter of L.D.,but I’ve got to say, he did good job tonight. He made the correct adjustments on defense when Miami was making a run, and he did a much better job of managing his rotation. He rode Joe and Al when he needed to and even got creative with the offense. He ran things through Al for a bit until Miami was forced to double and help out on him. He also made the most of the bench without disrupting the rhythm of different units on the floor. He even played Josh less minutes when Josh wasn’t producing well. I have to commend him on his coaching for this game.

Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. Let’s bring the same effort by both players and coaches to Chicago tooumorrow. I think they’ll be a tougher match-up than the Heat since they have much better depth, and arguably, better defense. That’s still nothing we can’t handle if our guys are ready to bring it and if L.D. is ready adjust as needed in an intelligent fashion.

It’s going to be tougher to find favorable matchups tomorrow against the bulls. They have both Noah and Asik to guard Al, and they have a few capable wing defenders to put on Joe. Boozer will have to defend someone though, and it will most likely be Josh, so if can get Josh to play to his strengths, he’ll have that mismatch to attack though.

I have a feeling that Teague is going to give Chicago some fits as well. Derrick Rose is a pretty good defender, but there’s not a single point guard in the league that isn’t going to be challenged with trying to keep Teague from penetrating into the lane.

This was a very nice win for the Hawks and a somewhat enjoyable experience because it is nice to scream and yell when the team you root for is playing like pros. Josh is still selfish going 4 for 12 but at least he made up for some of his foolishness. TMAC took the team over the hump, that will take a lot of pressure off Joe which may lead to better production. Can the Hawks mount this effort on a nightly basis? Who knows, the only guarantee about the Hawks is that Josh will never learn that a good Basketball team is not for the selfish. Jeff Teague played his game so that nonsense did not deter him from doing his thing. The Bulls game should be interesting to watch, we may find out a little more about our “Beloved” Hawks. TMAC is getting his legs back so when Josh gets dumb and he will get and play dumb the bench could be closer to his future. A very good win for the Hawks and as a team I hope they begin to rally against foolishness.

Lebron scored 8 in the first quarter, before we started playing zone, and Marvin stood in the corner with no one checking him as usual. AJ – It’s how Tmac carries himself in interviews and on the court. The man is an alpha male who has been in the spotlight, made 21 mill last season I believe it was. He’s a leader thru and thru. Now whether the team will follow…they seem to be responding a little.

And there are different kind of leaders, like LD described Stackhouse. TMac is a leader by example. Fearless really, and takes no stuff and doesn’t care about perceptions. No nonsense, and I like it!

21 efficient points for Joe along with great defense. Let’s not forget to give him his much deserved props.

Marvin was invisible in the 1st half – came out smokin’ in the 3rd. He’s played much better this season than the last two years in my opinion.

But he’s not a dominant alpha male. Nobody was on this team until TMac. ZaZa could get physical, but TMac is the commandeer right now if he wants it.

LOL Doc . . . my fantasy team is messed up right now, because Eric Gordon is hurt. He, Gasol, and Bynum are my “Big 3″. And I just got Bynum back on Saturday because of the suspension.

My plan with Jordan was to NOT play him every night. Only when i thought I had a good matchup with him. He;s literally a young Jamal Crawford right now . . . just erratic as hell.

Missed the game, stupid me. Assumed it would be a double-digit Heat win. I’m gonna have to start watching games now….NICE W on their home court tonight, 3 or 4 more of these and we might start seeing some butts in the seats at the Phil-pot.

Some of you clowns can say players had bad offensive performances but they made plays that helped win the game.

Even Vlad had a bad game by box score standards but his played helped set the tone.

“Marvin had 6 points and 3 boards in about 5.5 3rd quarter minutes when the Hawks took over the game. And he hit the shot that gave the Hawks the lead. But according to some, he was invisible. To the more objective observers, he was a major component when the Hawks made their 3rd quarter run to take the lead.”

If you can read, I specifically said in the first half. Reading is fundamental. I you think Marvin played well, thats your opinion. I disagree. He played well in the first three games, not today in my opinion. Joe, Teague, Al, and TMac played well, along with the bench.

I like the Teague – Johnson backcourt, for the different styles they bring to the table. And it’s not like you can double both of them.

But once teams start game planning to slow down Teague and start to double him, that’s when you’ll see his assist numbers ( or turnovers ) go up.

Drew just needs to keep things simple for Teague. Just run the pick and roll with him, and see if he can get to the basket. And if teams start to collapse on him, hope he makes the correct pass.

I’m hoping we don’t see a letdown tomorrow.

Hope these guys aren’t satisfied with a split here on the road.

Tomorrow’s yet another ’statement game’. Knock off the Heat and Bulls both in their buildings would mean something to me, even if it is this early in the season.

Steve, no one is calling Marvin an alpha male. The Marvin discussion was about “did he contribute”, which he obviously did. I think the players will eventually let us know who the “leader is”, I’m not sure that we have to give TMac a label to appreciate his performance tonight. It feels like we’re trying to annoint him after a few good performances and one great 4th quarter. Let’s give it a little more time before hanging his jersey in Philips Arena. Everyone is looking for a hero…

Again reading is fundamental. The discussion was did he play well, and play good defense. Nobody said he did not contribute. Check your glasses.

Rod, you’re a one trick pony. On a night where the team goes on the road, defeats a previously undefeated team, with contributions from pretty much everyone who played (with maybe Green being the exception), you still find a way to take pot shots at Marvin. Yawn.

Now you see why JJ has been screaming for years to get some veterans in here. Some guys are coming off the bench that have played well in this league, it helps. Also, having a point guard is helping this team, JJ doesnt have to guard that position anymore.

You are missing the part where I said “he did not play bad”. If you play almost 12 minutes without scoring or getting a rebound in the first half, what about that is not invisible? Go see the eye doctor, because I’m beginning to think that you have problems seeing. Lebron actually had 8 in the first quarter before we went to a zone? Who’s man was he? Maybe if you spend as much time focusing on your reading comprehension skills as you do making comments to my post, you comprehension skills will improve.
