Atlanta Hawks at Rockets: Game thread

  • The Hawks are using their normal starting lineup. All players except Kirk Hinrich (shoulder) are available.
  • There could be a Twin sighting tonight. “The first three games we didn’t play Jason Collins, who was a big part of what we did last season,” Larry Drew said. “I want to preserve him but at the same time I want to make sure I keep him in basketball shape. I take it game by game. It’s pretty much given who will be the first 10 players.”
  • The Rockets will see the Hawks’ fourth game in five nights and raise them the last leg of a back-to-back-to-back. The Rockets also had their flight diverted from Hobby airport to Bush International because of dense fog that was still lingering when my flight landed at Bush this morning. The Hawks’ charter was the last flight to make it into Hobby last night.
  • Both teams figure to be tired but Houston should be downright exhausted. Drew said the Hawks plan to attack: “That’s our whole objective. When you play against a team that has played a back-to-back and has done a lot of traveling, we definitely want to go into this game with an attack mentality. At the same time, on the road, we have to control the tempo. We attack when we can attack. Sometimes a relentless attack is not always the answer.”
  • Josh Smith on Atlanta’s perimeter D: “It definitely helps when you are able to have perimeter defenders who take pride in sitting down on their man and not letting him get past them easy. It definitely takes a lot of pressure off me and Al [Horford] from having to contest a lot of shots and it keeps us out of foul trouble.”

Was wondering what the deal was with Jason Collins. He needs to get some minutes tonight. Can’t just expect him to perform without giving him some time.

What a boring New Year’s Eve for me. Recovering from being sick. Decided not to attend a party I was invited to. All alone, since my wife is up north with family. Thank God the Hawks are playing. I would have zero to do otherwise.

“Josh Smith, in my opinion, is the heart and soul of the Hawks. But he also represents why we can’t get to the next level. People keep waiting for him to “get it”, but he simply doesn’t. And his ‘tweener’ status is also a reason why we can’t match up with elite teams.”

They said a lot of the same things about Rasheed Wallace until he won a title.

I firmly believe that as long as a player plays defense, you can put him in the mix with the right group of teammates and build a championship team.

“HEDO TURKOGLU???? have you guys seen this man play recently??? He’s flat out terrible nowadays and having him undermines the idea of actually playing defense or rebounding. Add that in with a horrendous contract.

Jason Richardson is older than Joe Johnson, smaller, less productive and presents no matchup problems.”

The only reason I keep including Turkoglu in those trades is because taking his contract off the hands of the Magic improves the Hawks’ chances of getting the trade to happen. I don’t like Turkoglu as a player and I don’t like his contract, but the willingness to trade for him is in itself a trade chip.

“There’s no way Atlanta trades BOTH Joe Johnson and Al Horford to get Dwight Howard. It will be one…with some complementary players and draft picks/cash. That’s the reason this deal will never get done.”

Unless the Hawks part with two players from the core, they are not going to trump a Lakers trade involving Gasol or Bynum.

“Najeh, sounds like you’re saying that the Orlando core with Josh & Teague would be the right combination?”

Maybe. I do think Teague-JRich-Marvin-Smoove-Howard gives the Hawks a chance to go deep in the playoffs right now. But more importantly, I think the fact that Smoove and Al are each owed much less per year than Joe over the course of their contracts means that hanging on to one of them gives the Hawks more cap space to acquire a better supporting cast around those players.

I’ll give you the first two, but Sheed was never a good rebounder for his size. His career high of 8.2 boards per game has been topped by Smoove in 3 separate seasons. And Sheed was always criticized for the exact same thing as Smoove — drifting out to the perimeter and taking too many jump shots.

Not to be captain obvious, but there’s nothing different about this year’s team…& that’s what dampers any potential of excitement about them. What’s worse is that we’re stuck with Drew’s perimeter-shot-offense for another season. And as I’m typing this, Josh throws up another long jumper. We’ll suffer the same pattern as last season. Pass to Josh? You can call it hate, I call it expecting him to do his job. Y’all wanted him to play, now he’s playing. I really like Teague’s aggressivness when he’s going to the basket, and his ability to penetrate and finish is great. However, one thing he really needs to improve is his playmaking for others. He seems to be really struggling with trying to hit the open man, especially after coming off of a pick. I’ve been seeing him do this over and over, and it’s a bit annoying at times. When you come off of a screen, you have to read the defense, and your top 2 options are typically to either finish the play for yourself or hit the man who set the pick. Teague usually just uses the pick to finish his own shot attempt, which is fine, however, when that shot is not there, Teague needs to do a better of job at making the right play. It’s common sense to typically hit the guy who set the pick for you first, he’s usually the one who is open if you aren’t right after you come off of a pick. We’d have a lot of wide open looks if Teague would just learn to do that.

Just to be clear, I’m not putting Teague down. I’m just saying that there are a lot of little things like what I mentioned above which Teague needs to work on improving. Teague seems to be at his best when he’s being aggressive looking to score. However, when defenses are preventing Teague from scoring, he needs to be prepared to make plays for others.

I’m I the only one who doesn’t like Drew playing a full bench unit? Maybe when Kirk gets back, it will be fine to have 5 bench guys on the floor at once in a meaningful game, but I don’t feel comfortable with that at this point. I think one of the core players (Joe, Josh, or Al) needs to be on the floor with the bench unit at all times. Drew has more options this year to mix and match the pieces, but he has yet to do so.

Problems tonight had to do with the PG position not executing plays, our bench (Green and Vlad) not providing ANY valuable minutes, Smoove taking WAY too many shots (sure he can take a few just not this many), and our lackluster defense. Nice game by the Rockets, they hit all the shots they needed to in the 4th. We missed a lot of jump shots and didn’t get to the line enough. Our guys definitely got discouraged when the Rockets kept making jumpshots, our offensive became jumpshot heavy also. We’re executing the offensive much to slow and Jeff needs to drive and dish. True playmaking point guards are kind of tough to find these days. All you really find nowadays are combo guards who want to score first. Think about it, how many pure point guards are really left in today’s game?

Rondo plays like a pure point, but he also can’t shoot the ball well and has hall of famers to pass to. Steve Nash is a great playmaker, but he’s about to retire. Rose is more of a scorer than a true point guard, and Westbrook is definitely not a true point guard. Other than Chris Paul, most of the top guards these days are scorers. Players don’t take as much pride in setting the table for others anymore, apparently. Also, the media as a whole seems to be very naive and wouldn’t give someone who was a great playmaker, but averaged less than 10ppg as much credit as they deserve, so I’m not surprised that it’s so tough to find guys who really want to play like true point guards anymore.

Is it really that surprising? I’ve never thought of Drew to be a reliable head coach, and he’s never really appeared to be the type who rewards minutes based upon on-court production, either. Just because Marvin plays well, it doesn’t mean he will be rewarded nor punished. His minutes will likely end up being the same as they were with the past. He may even sit out a lot of fourth quarters the way he did the last couple of years in favor of Jamal, only this time, it will be in favor of T-Mac, regardless of how either T-Mac or Marvin are playing.

It’s the coaches job to discipline the player when they do something like that, but LD is too soft on Smith. At least Woody got in his face on some of these issues, even if it was “in front” of everyone like Smoove said. It’s incredible how someone so talented can waste their talent by not being able to learn

Josh and JJ stank it up all night…Al had it going and neither Josh or JJ seem to care…they gotta get their shots…heck, they are captains…they got a green light to the shoot ball.

Besides, Josh and JJ listless play…it was the decision by LD to go back with his starting lineup too soon…VLAD was playing good defense on Scola…why change the lineup…we were clearly back in the game. We go back to the starters…next thing you know…we down by twelve.

Again, it will comes down to whether LD will hold his starters accountable for their performance in the game….TOO MANY…isolation plays for Josh and JJ…the ball stop moving.

JJ was being guarded by Kevin Martin…geeeeeez when did KMartin become a defensive dynamo.
Let’s see if LD is just serving us lip service, or will we see LD bench his starters when they are being ineffective.

Why TF didn’t we keep feeding the ball to AL…Clearly he had it going tonight.

The only way Marvin can disappear…is if LD let him disappear…he obviously doesn’t have a problem letting Josh and JJ hoist up ill-advised shots…he pulls Marvin…when he needs to be pulling Josh or JJ…go figure.

Looks like I found where the Hawks will be partying tonight . . if they stay in town.

Terrance Williams ( a scrub on the Rockets bench ) is hosting a party at a spot called Venue in downtown Houston. I haven’t been to Houston in over 6 years, but I do know that the women in Houston rival the women in Atlanta . . in the looks department.

So the Hawks have plenty of time to shower and mull over this loss, then party with the Rockets team themselves at Venue, with about 700 of the finest women in Texas.

It’s either that, or they’re going to Club Onyx. Yes . . Houston has an Onyx too. Same type of establishment.

I can’t believe we didn’t see Zaza and Al on the court at the same time tonight more. That could have really helped out in terms of rebounding, especially during the jumpshooting parade (or should I say Brick-laying extravaganza?) that ensued for most of the night due to the Hawks offense.

You know what is odd to me about the jumpshots? The guy who lead the team in shooting percentage on mid-range shots last season (Al) seems to be taking the fewest jumpshots and seems to be the most reluctant to take those sorts of shots. It might be due to the fact that Teague is terrible at running the pick-and-pop, but maybe Al is just trying to play inside more. I like the fact that he is posting up and driving the ball more, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a few of those mid-range jumpers too if he’s open. You have to play to your strengths, and it’s nice to mix your game up and keep the defense guessing.

But back to the game, Tonight you didn’t see no pride out there at all by the Hawks. One of the reason why they are so looked down because they don’t put 110% of anything. Josh, you are not a jump shooter period. Al, you need to go stronger into the post, and I am seriously think that those rumors is getting to them. I’ve got to agree with Mike is Back on a lot of things in his 9:37 post. L.D. did a poor job coaching tonight, and for whatever reason JJ and Josh seem to be immune to criticism and punishment/discipline when they are not playing well. Yes, Marvin should have played more tonight, and yes, Al should have gotten more touches when he had it going.

The players had their share of faults, especially on the defensive end, but the coaching in this game only made the situation worse.

The guys who play the smartest team ball (Marvin and Al) get the fewest minutes of the starters, and the guys who are the most selfish and missed the most shots (8 misses each) play the most minutes (Josh and Joe). Great coaching, L.D. You’re a class act.

Coach LD has NO IDEA what he’s doing as far as rotations go! This is what I would do

2nd UNIT

Green/Pargo
Mcgrady
VLad
Ivan
Zaza
(DEPENDING ON MATCHUPS)

Mixed units

Green/Pargo
Mcgrady
Marvin
Horford
Zaza/Collins

Basically, WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO BE A MIS-MATCH PROBLEM FOR ANY TEAM if we use our players correctly. Let Horford play PF waaay more often, and let’s occasionally use Collins. He’s slow but a smart defender.

Pluses from this game are we stayed in it with DEFENSE, and Marvin still looks good. So does Tracy.

Minuses are we aren’t scoring as easily as we should and JOSH SMITH still wants to play on the perimeter. I remember one play where Joe was posting up and looking DIRECTLY at Josh Smith for the cut, and Josh just stood there and waited for Joe to pass it to him.

This team CAN beat the HEAT, “we have the technology”, will LD use it right. We’ll see Monday

McHale

10:42 pm

Sautee,

I’m not sure where you got that we play tomorrow, but the next game is on Monday in Miami. Yes, the Hawks are going to be traveling, but that’s not an excuse. The core is pretty young and starters minutes (30+) for each of them on any given night, as long as it’s the third night of a back-to-back-to-back is not something that shouldn’t be expected. These guys are professionals. I’m not asking for L.D. to run his starters into the ground, I’m just asking him to learn how to utilize his pieces. Thinking that his bench was going to beat a gritty houston team and their starters would be an insult to the Rockets. These bench players still don’t have much chemistry since they haven’t played with eachother for very long. Also, the main thing I was complaining about was the way L.D. utilized Marvin and Al. Marvin has been playing very effectively so far this season, and there’s no reason that he shouldn’t have been given more of a chance tonight. Josh played 30 minutes when he wasn’t even very effective for many of those minutes. Marvin was actually playing decent when L.D. took him out. He got off to a great start in this game. There’s no excuse for him only playing 19 minutes on the night. Even if T-Mac was playing well, that doesn’t mean you bench Marvin. Marvin is versatile, he could have played alongside T-Mac or with the second unit, or even in place of Josh at the 4 when Josh was being more destructive than helpful.

There’s also no excuse for L.D. failing to recognize advantages and milk them. Al had it going in the post for a while, and instead of continuing to go to him until Houston either switched matchups or doubled, we went away from one of the few things that was working for us on the offensive end.

L.D. is borderline terrible when it comes to his rotation. He even put Jason Collins in against Dalembert and a quick Houston team where it was clear that Collins would not be helpful. Sometimes, it seems like L.D. doesn’t even have a clue what the strengths of his players are. Is Marvin that hated that he couldn’t even get minutes over Jason Collins? Yes, I know Collins was in due to the fact that Zaza had 2 fouls, but that’s yet another poor decision by L.D. Heaven forbid that the backup center gets 2 fouls in the second quarter. What are we going to do? Zaza doesn’t play big minutes anyway, L.D. could have kept him in without virtually no real consequence.

Sometimes, I really want our team to be broken up so that guys who are serious about competing and want to win have a chance to play for an organization that actually cares, and under a coach who is actually competent. I know I’m being negative, but I’m just tired of seeing the same poor coaching year after year. Players are always going to make mistakes, and that’s enough to annoy someone, but when the coach makes even more mistakes on top of that, and shows no signs of learning from those mistakes, it’s almost a lost cause. Al, Josh, and Marvin would probably all be much more effective elsewhere with a coach that knew how to use them. The only guy who has his talent maximized is Joe, and that’s only because L.D. gives him the green light to do what he pleases. Josh gets the green light too, but he doesn’t have anyone to teach him how to make the most of what he’s got. It’s just a bad situation here in Atlanta.
