Nets at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Normal starting lineup for the Hawks: Jeff Teague, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford. Brook Lopez (foot) is out for the Nets.
  • The Nets lost 94-78 at Orlando but showed some spirit while rallying to within three points in the third quarter after being down 20. Tucker High’s MarShon Brooks scored 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter.
  • Larry Drew says he expects a better effort from the Nets after the Hawks ran them out of their gym on Tuesday. He’s confident his players won’t overlook New Jersey: “This game will be a dangerous game because they are a team that was a little embarrassed the other night and they are going to come out and show they are a better ball club. It’s the old ‘wounded animal’ theory. When they are wounded, that’s when they are the most dangerous.”
  • Jannero Pargo says he’s still getting his bearings with the Hawks: “Defensively, very comfortable. Defese is pretty much playing with hard and with heart. I’m pretty good with that. Offensively, it’s a bit of a challenge remembering the calls. I know the plays once we get into them and start running them. But the funny thing is, I have to start it. I have the ball in my hands. I’m waiting for somebody else to make a move so I can say, ‘Oh that’s the play.’ But I am actually getting more comfortable after two games.”
  • Hinrich is to see his doctor on Jan. 3. “I’m pretty sure I will be cleared to do everything non-contact,” he said. “Everything with the [physical therapist] is going good. It’s really more of a formality.” Hinrich has been shooting and doing ball-handling drills.
  • Elias says the Hawks are only the third NBA team in the last 20 years to outscore their first two opponents by at least 50 points combined (Kings in 2002-03 and Lakers in 2008-09).

Dang..Never mind..Im just glad to be on here..

Hey MC..
(If you can read body language) Do the nets look like they know they are gonna be beaten again or do they look ready for the challenge?

And,(even though its real early in the season) if we win the next 4 including the heat and bulls game, how do you think the national media will look at this team then,or is it still too early?

Willie Green looks out of control on offense today. I like the fact that he wants to attack but it has to be in sync with the game. Marvin is playing well even though he missed an easy 1 and a couple of tips didnt go in he’s playing with a lot of energy. I would rather see Sloan then Pargo with our 2nd unit seems like pargo likes to keep shooting 3pointers and not hitting. But they will probaly do Sloan like they did Teague last yr or it will take aan injury for him to get some tick.

“Maybe it’s due to the surgery, but an anyone say that Marvin doesn’t play better without Jamal here? His production immediately dropped when Jamal came here, and now it immediately rises once Jamal leaves. Seems like more than a coincidence to me.”

If you look at advanced and per-minute stats, although you are right that Marvin got fewer shots with Jamal here, he wasn’t any less efficient with those shots. According to the stats he was essentially the same player he was before, just with fewer attempts.

So far this year, his efficiency stats (which are independent of the number of attempts) are way up. And also, Jamal’s absence can’t account for the spike in Marvin’s non-scoring related stats, like rebound rate.

I think Marvin is just playing at a higher level than he ever has. If that’s because of the surgery, that’s great, because it hopefully means this three game stretch is not a fluke.

His production dropped when Flip Murray was here also. He was not a better option for the coach to have on the floor when Jamal or Flip was here. He is playing much better this year. Joe shouldn’t dribble the clock all the way down, and he should know that Josh is going to be standing someplace he has the worst time scoring from, and should not pass him the ball out there.

Here are some good things that I noticed tonight:

Teague was getting to the basket at will. Part of that has to do with New Jersey’s poor interior defense, but it’s nice to know that we finally have a penetrating point guard who can force the defense to collapse and either finish at the rim or get someone else an open shot from the perimeter.

It’s early, but Al looks a lot more active this year in terms of help defense. He was really working to protect the rim and was contesting just about everything he could in the paint. It’s a welcomed sight to see him blocking shots. He looked like our best interior defender tonight, both individually and in terms of help. Al’s post-game also looked better. It could be due to the fact that Okur was on him, but Al was still aggressive in the post. Hopefully, he gets more touches in the future so that we can tell if he’s really improved down low. His jump shot and free throws have been off so far, but I look for that to pick up soon.

Joe didn’t have a great night, but it looks like he’ll have a lot more energy down the stretch this year since he won’t have so much pressure on him to handle the ball and run the offense the way he has had to in the past.

T-Mac looks great with the bench. He’s obviously nowhere near where he used to be in his heyday, but he can run the second unit and makes smart decisions with the ball most of the time. When Kirk gets back, we might be able to use Kirk as another outside shooter while letting T-Mac play point-forward for the second unit. Playing Kirk off-the-ball gives us another weapon off the bench.

Houston should definitely be our toughest opponent thus far this season. They’ve always been a gritty team, and with Kevin McHale now coaching them, you know they are going to play hard, regardless of what the scoreboard says. I hope Joe is well-rested and ready to do a lot of running around with Kevin Martin. Also, I hope that Drew has finally learned from his mistakes last season and matches Al up on Scola, defensively. Scola vs. Josh in the post has probably been the biggest mismatch in favor of Houston that the Hawks have had vs. Houston in the last year. I’m not saying Josh isn’t a good defender, Scola is just very good at scoring in the post, and he looked a bit too strong for Josh last year. Al did a good job on him also.

With all of that being said, tomorrow’s game could be another W as long as the players and staff play it smart. Kevin Martin is not going to be able to defend Joe 1 vs. 1, so we shouldn’t obviously attack that matchup, and if Scola is on either Josh or Al, we need to get them in the post as well. I think Teague can Lowry.

Houston got drilled by the Griz, but they did play a ton of players. Their fresh no doubt about it.

KMart and Scola always seem to hurt us. Lowery to before we got Teague.

The ‘Wolves have Ridnour, Rubio and Barea. I would guess 1 of those has got to go.

Ridnour was drafted by Sund in Seattle, so he’s probably coming this way, in the off season if not before. Just sayin’

Okay after watching this game I’m really surprised they pulled it out it still might be the Net’s, but I almost expected a tougher game with the beating they took earlier.

Brooks = a soon to be beast it seems it’s only a few games, but he was lighting it up out there.

My first thing is this everyone played well the starters don’t seem to have it just yet, but I can tell Josh has gotten better about taking those jumpers(was scared about that last one).

Marvin……….MARVIN????MARVIN with the half-court 3 at the half I’m not ready to say much, but man he’s playing he hasn’t disappeared yet. I’ll at least say I’m proud of him right now.

Josh and Horford have been struggling they’re great on the defensive side the offense will come soon enough.

Joe is Joe doesn’t matter lol.

Teague = legit enough said.

Now for the bench someone better sit Pargo down he looking like JC1 except worse, but he got defense. Cause I swear he jacks up another 3 I’ll march down there myself yank him off the court.

SteveW

December 30th, 2011
10:45 pm

Matchup with the Heat:

Teague and Pargo may be just a little better than Chalmers and Cole.

JJ and Green are almost as good as DWade and nobody (James Jones?)

Marvin and TMac are not as good as LeBron and Battier

Josh and Vlad Rad can be as good as Bosh and Haslem. Depends on where Josh’s head is. If it’s in the game, he can match Bosh really well

AL and Zaza can destroy Joel Anthony and nobody, especially ZaZa – they have no one to match up with him to this point.

We gotta chance. The Heat play our game – run and gun. And we do it about as well as they do really.

Yeah I agree Ray, Al needs to stop worrying about the trade. Its going to happen, if happens. But the facts are, Al is playing right at his career average. on the year I think hes 7, 11,12. That 10 average and about about 6 or 7 rebounds per game. I actually dont expect much more. Thats about as good as Al gets. career of 12/9 so hes not too far off.

I think Atlanta matches up well with both Miami and Chicago but they would have a better chance against Chicago because the refs will bailout Lebron and Wade when the game gets tight. Also I have noticed it seems Lebron has decided it is Wade’s team and he is going to be the sidekick as opppossed to last year when they would take turns. Chicago as long as you keep Rose relatively under control and keep down the role players you will be alright

One other thing, the clippers are better but their overall defense is not that good.
