Nets at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
7:20 pm December 30, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
- Normal starting lineup for the Hawks: Jeff Teague, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford. Brook Lopez (foot) is out for the Nets.
- The Nets lost 94-78 at Orlando but showed some spirit while rallying to within three points in the third quarter after being down 20. Tucker High’s MarShon Brooks scored 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter.
- Larry Drew says he expects a better effort from the Nets after the Hawks ran them out of their gym on Tuesday. He’s confident his players won’t overlook New Jersey: “This game will be a dangerous game because they are a team that was a little embarrassed the other night and they are going to come out and show they are a better ball club. It’s the old ‘wounded animal’ theory. When they are wounded, that’s when they are the most dangerous.”
- Jannero Pargo says he’s still getting his bearings with the Hawks: “Defensively, very comfortable. Defese is pretty much playing with hard and with heart. I’m pretty good with that. Offensively, it’s a bit of a challenge remembering the calls. I know the plays once we get into them and start running them. But the funny thing is, I have to start it. I have the ball in my hands. I’m waiting for somebody else to make a move so I can say, ‘Oh that’s the play.’ But I am actually getting more comfortable after two games.”
- Hinrich is to see his doctor on Jan. 3. “I’m pretty sure I will be cleared to do everything non-contact,” he said. “Everything with the [physical therapist] is going good. It’s really more of a formality.” Hinrich has been shooting and doing ball-handling drills.
- Elias says the Hawks are only the third NBA team in the last 20 years to outscore their first two opponents by at least 50 points combined (Kings in 2002-03 and Lakers in 2008-09).

“We need to do a better job on Zaza.”
LOL . . imagine that. The defensive gameplan will be to stop Zaza next half.

This is bad Hawks, too selfish. Teague needs to run the team, things are going bad when anyone else tries to do it.

Al’s turnovers are beginning to affect teague. The sooner we trade Al the better it will be for Teague!

Maybe it’s due to the surgery, but an anyone say that Marvin doesn’t play better without Jamal here? His production immediately dropped when Jamal came here, and now it immediately rises once Jamal leaves. Seems like more than a coincidence to me.

Luke Cage on point. Team mates have to give him passing angles and come get the ball quickly. I tooted that ole’ horn for many years and eventually moved on to newer complaints. Nice astute observation from Luke Cage.

“Al’s turnovers are beginning to affect teague.”
To be exact, you should say Al’s turnover. He has one.
For the season.

Willie Green looks out of control on offense today. I like the fact that he wants to attack but it has to be in sync with the game. Marvin is playing well even though he missed an easy 1 and a couple of tips didnt go in he’s playing with a lot of energy. I would rather see Sloan then Pargo with our 2nd unit seems like pargo likes to keep shooting 3pointers and not hitting. But they will probaly do Sloan like they did Teague last yr or it will take aan injury for him to get some tick.

If you look at advanced and per-minute stats, although you are right that Marvin got fewer shots with Jamal here, he wasn’t any less efficient with those shots. According to the stats he was essentially the same player he was before, just with fewer attempts.
So far this year, his efficiency stats (which are independent of the number of attempts) are way up. And also, Jamal’s absence can’t account for the spike in Marvin’s non-scoring related stats, like rebound rate.
I think Marvin is just playing at a higher level than he ever has. If that’s because of the surgery, that’s great, because it hopefully means this three game stretch is not a fluke.

His production dropped when Flip Murray was here also. He was not a better option for the coach to have on the floor when Jamal or Flip was here. He is playing much better this year. First time he has ever looked like a professional basketball player, besides the 2 or three great games per year that he has.
