Nets at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
7:20 pm December 30, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
- Normal starting lineup for the Hawks: Jeff Teague, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford. Brook Lopez (foot) is out for the Nets.
- The Nets lost 94-78 at Orlando but showed some spirit while rallying to within three points in the third quarter after being down 20. Tucker High’s MarShon Brooks scored 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter.
- Larry Drew says he expects a better effort from the Nets after the Hawks ran them out of their gym on Tuesday. He’s confident his players won’t overlook New Jersey: “This game will be a dangerous game because they are a team that was a little embarrassed the other night and they are going to come out and show they are a better ball club. It’s the old ‘wounded animal’ theory. When they are wounded, that’s when they are the most dangerous.”
- Jannero Pargo says he’s still getting his bearings with the Hawks: “Defensively, very comfortable. Defese is pretty much playing with hard and with heart. I’m pretty good with that. Offensively, it’s a bit of a challenge remembering the calls. I know the plays once we get into them and start running them. But the funny thing is, I have to start it. I have the ball in my hands. I’m waiting for somebody else to make a move so I can say, ‘Oh that’s the play.’ But I am actually getting more comfortable after two games.”
- Hinrich is to see his doctor on Jan. 3. “I’m pretty sure I will be cleared to do everything non-contact,” he said. “Everything with the [physical therapist] is going good. It’s really more of a formality.” Hinrich has been shooting and doing ball-handling drills.
- Elias says the Hawks are only the third NBA team in the last 20 years to outscore their first two opponents by at least 50 points combined (Kings in 2002-03 and Lakers in 2008-09).

Why thank you for that one

I was going to say that Al didn’t really rebound the ball that well tonight, but I didn’t realize that he only played 23 minutes total. 5 rebounds in 23 minutes isn’t terrible, but he can do a lot better. Humphries shouldn’t have had 13 rebounds by himself with Josh and Al combining for just 11.

Hawks end up shooting 48% for the game, which means that they shot well over 50% in the 2nd half. Great game by Teague. He and Zaza deserve the game ball tonight.

I actually thought Al played well aside from the lack of rebounding (at least 2 of those 5 boards were his own misses by my recollection). He converted a couple of post ups that he probably wouldn’t have made last year and protected the rim well.

If Al and Josh could just hit their average in FT’s, the game wouldn’t have been quite this close.

Joe’s allowing the game to come to him.. i like how he’s being used/preserved early. Jeff Teague and even Tmac to provide some of the same things makes a hell of a difference..
facilitator, scorer, primary defender.. is a hell of a task.
of course someone is gonna bring up the number he’s getting to do it, but we’re a better team with him having less of a load the entire game.

Runner – serious answer.
Because i’ve followed these guys for 32 yrs now, that’s why.
And because i can do as i please, just as you can. I don’t think we’re going anywhere until we actually get there. Difference in me and many.
Besides, why does it matter? Are you just another of the many give everyone a trophy on the third grade soccer team types that are so common on these blogs?
Half the time i’m just being an idiot for no good reason.

Here are some good things that I noticed tonight:
Teague was getting to the basket at will. Part of that has to do with New Jersey’s poor interior defense, but it’s nice to know that we finally have a penetrating point guard who can force the defense to collapse and either finish at the rim or get someone else an open shot from the perimeter.
It’s early, but Al looks a lot more active this year in terms of help defense. He was really working to protect the rim and was contesting just about everything he could in the paint. It’s a welcomed sight to see him blocking shots. He looked like our best interior defender tonight, both individually and in terms of help. Al’s post-game also looked better. It could be due to the fact that Okur was on him, but Al was still aggressive in the post. Hopefully, he gets more touches in the future so that we can tell if he’s really improved down low. His jump shot and free throws have been off so far, but I look for that to pick up soon.
Joe didn’t have a great night, but it looks like he’ll have a lot more energy down the stretch this year since he won’t have so much pressure on him to handle the ball and run the offense the way he has had to in the past.
T-Mac looks great with the bench. He’s obviously nowhere near where he used to be in his heyday, but he can run the second unit and makes smart decisions with the ball most of the time. When Kirk gets back, we might be able to use Kirk as another outside shooter while letting T-Mac play point-forward for the second unit. Playing Kirk off-the-ball gives us another weapon off the bench.

Good game..I don’t want to get too down on this team and its 2nd unit.Just like i didn’t want to get up for this team and its 2nd unit.
McGrady is saving it for tomorrow night.
Jeff Green is not money.
Pargo, needs to go,just like bob said during the broadcast.
And there were times when i bet Zsa Zsa was looking at his 2nd teamers and was saying,”what da he–”?
But,all in all,its good that we didn’t play that well but we still won..
We would have lost this game last year..

What are you talking about here? And the whole point in being a fan is to have faith, unless you’re a bandwagon fan like many are in Atlanta who would only begin seriously supporting their team AFTER they do something big. We have the personnel that can win a championship, a little support wouldn’t hurt their bid for it.
