Nets at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Normal starting lineup for the Hawks: Jeff Teague, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford. Brook Lopez (foot) is out for the Nets.
  • The Nets lost 94-78 at Orlando but showed some spirit while rallying to within three points in the third quarter after being down 20. Tucker High’s MarShon Brooks scored 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter.
  • Larry Drew says he expects a better effort from the Nets after the Hawks ran them out of their gym on Tuesday. He’s confident his players won’t overlook New Jersey: “This game will be a dangerous game because they are a team that was a little embarrassed the other night and they are going to come out and show they are a better ball club. It’s the old ‘wounded animal’ theory. When they are wounded, that’s when they are the most dangerous.”
  • Jannero Pargo says he’s still getting his bearings with the Hawks: “Defensively, very comfortable. Defese is pretty much playing with hard and with heart. I’m pretty good with that. Offensively, it’s a bit of a challenge remembering the calls. I know the plays once we get into them and start running them. But the funny thing is, I have to start it. I have the ball in my hands. I’m waiting for somebody else to make a move so I can say, ‘Oh that’s the play.’ But I am actually getting more comfortable after two games.”
  • Hinrich is to see his doctor on Jan. 3. “I’m pretty sure I will be cleared to do everything non-contact,” he said. “Everything with the [physical therapist] is going good. It’s really more of a formality.” Hinrich has been shooting and doing ball-handling drills.
  • Elias says the Hawks are only the third NBA team in the last 20 years to outscore their first two opponents by at least 50 points combined (Kings in 2002-03 and Lakers in 2008-09).

Iso Joe on the defense….much underappreciated as a defender

That was a good play by Al to strip the ball from Humphries, but it wouldn’t have been necessary if he had boxed him out in the first place.

Heh…true. But do you give up on the play, or do you try and make up for the mistake?

Bad teams find ways to lose. The Nets are a bad team.

“why is the rookie inbounding the ball anyway”

Good point. Coaching mistake by Avery Johnson.

If I were Larry Drew, I would get on our “bigs” after this game about rebounding the ball. Zaza was great on the glass, but Josh and Al really need to step it up on the boards.

Two things from tonight’s game:

1) Jersey played with a lot more pride and intensity.

2) Our jumpers didn’t fall nearly as well.

Result – close game.

Thankful for –

1) Teague all game long.

2) Joe in the 4th quarter – just read the stats, you’ll understand.

3) Zaza off the bench.

Later, y’all.

Game was too close for comfort, maybe the guys reading too much of their own press clippings, good win anyway, now to take this act on the road and keep up with the Defense. GO HAWKS!!!

@ Big Ray . . I could’ve sworn there was at least 5 seconds on that clock when Josh caught the ball. Why can’t he do this when he catch the ball.

Lackluster Hawks defense (47% from 3) and missed free throws by the Hawks kept the Nets in this game. First mediocre performance by the Hawks this season, but they got away with it against a lesser team.

I’m glad we got the win, but I didn’t like the way this game went. We need to do a better job rebounding the ball (Josh and Al, especially), and we need to take better advantage of our mismatches. We should have attacked guys like Okur as much as possible and this game wouldn’t even have been close.

Nice game by Teague tonight, by the way. The game ball goes to him.

If a=b and b=c, then a=c.

If bad teams find ways to lose and the Nets find ways to lose, then [team] Nets is [are] a bad team.

I believe that is called the Transitive Property.
