Key to this season so far? Our off season. We had some guys who cared during the off-season, trained hard to get better, and the results are showing to this point on the court.

I think last years trip to the semi’s, more than the first two years there, got this team hungry to go farther. And we have about a two year window, before Joe just gets too old, unless we get fortunate on a couple of good 1st picks the next two drafts, for some good energy off the bench.

Some of you guys are silly. You know it was the Wizards right?

Rebounding is about mentality to a degree? And to another degree McGee is a stringbean, Blatche is an immobile idiot and Rashard Lewis is immobile and washed up. etc etc

Lets see what happens when we go to visit guys who’ll likely have Homecourt Advantages in the playoffs ie the Heat or the Bulls.

This has been an awesome holiday for me before I go back overseas.

I saw my hawks win their season opener and Ill get to see my cowboys win their season finale. Times like this make it hard to go back.

Keep winning hawks

Beware the Nets! Why? Whenever you blow out a team the way we did them the other night, the tendency is, is not to play as hard against them the next time you meet.

And the tendency of the other team is too play harder to avoid the blowout again.

So it may be a little bit of a trap game for us, that could get out of hand if we allow NJ to get on a roll.

You don’t want the Nets hanging around until the last 2 minutes of the game in other words. Stomp’um early, and go about your business.

The Heat are playing the big 3 too many minutes in a compressed schedule. Yes, the Heat catch some breaks, like 3 or 4 days off in the middle of January, because they started early. But they still play some really tough stretches. Spoelestra may need to takes some L’s now to have a healthy team for the playoffs.

And Pargo and Green are still learning the system – Our last two guys signed. Judge them in a couple of weeks.

The Nets are worthless. At worst they’ll put up a better fight. Gotta watch Anthony Morrow. I don’t think Williams will try too hard useless the rest of the team shows up. Other than that, I think he’s pretty bummed out and depressed that he has to be on this wack team.

In reference to Pargo, I heard how Mark Jackson was complementing Ish Smith last night. That is the guy who I thought we could have used as a good complement to JT. Time will tell, but Ish had some good games in Houston last year.

Last yr there were complaits about the inability of the Hawks to put away weaker teams like the Nets and Wizzards. Now we’re hearing complaints and/or excuses about them actually being able to put those very teams away. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES. I love our current bench. I’d take this bench, without Jamal, over our previous benches, with Jamal, any day of the week. TMac is a better defender, rebounder, penetrator, passer and facilitor, and he offers more varsitility.

Radmanovic is Jamal’s equal as a 3pt shooter, is a much better rebounder, and a far more willing defender. Pargo and Green are both much better defenders, and offer us more OFF and DEF options. And IJohnson gives us more energy, agressiveness, physicality and rebounding potential than EThomas, JPowell, or HThomas would have ever provided.

This is why I’ve been so high on this team.

@ Ken Strickland

Reason for the complaints is it’s so early in the season I’ll give them this much they’re not playing down to the weaker competition.

As for Pargo and Green I’d rather keep Green and cut Pargo if he plays like that again he can pack his bags and GTFO just saying.

Compared to what we had to work with last year where it felt like we only had 6 players it feels as though we got at least 11 this year.

Someone either on this blog or another called for Etan Thomas to come back please get him out of here.

We now have our PG of the future in JTeague. Actually, we’ve had him all along, but due to circumstances beyond his handlers control, and the circumstances of last yrs playoffs, Drew was forced to let him out of the cage he had him in. A healthy Marvin, along with the addition of TMac, gives us solid and potentially consistent scoring, rebounding and DEF from the SF position. The Hawks will be a serious contender and a formitable foe come playoff time.

Atlanta gets the Heat both times in January on the back end of a back-to-back for the Heat. The Heat play the Bobcats on January 1 in Miami and then the Hawks go to Miami on January 2. Hopefully the Bobcats will give them fits again.

The Pacers play the Heat on January 4 in Miami and then the Heat come to Atlanta on January 5.

Meanwhile, the Hawks have the day off each time they play the Heat.

” I’ve got my body in better shape, and I feel better. I was never going to make excuses, but my back was bothering me the last two or three years. I had a discectomy [June 8]. Basically, I had a disk pressing up against a nerve and it was making my leg numb. A lot of times I would be out there, and my leg would just start tingling. Man, [the NBA lockout] was a blessing for me. A lot of other guys wouldn’t say that, but having that much time to get healthy really helped.”
– Marvin Williams.

All this Marvin love is funny. The guy has played like a professional basketball player for the first two games of the season, against Rashaad Lewis and Damien James. In two games he is averaging 15.5ppg, 8.5 rpg, and 41%FG. I was impressed with him taking the open shots with no hesitation, and playing aggressive. This is how he should always play. Let’s not crown him so fast. He does have 6 years of stats and games that we have used to form an opinion on him on. If the above quote from Marvin is true, then the Hawks medical staff should all be fired. If this guy was walking around with his leg numbing, and a disc pressing against a nerve for 3 years, and did not have surgery earlier, then we have some very incompotent doctors working for the Hawks. Lets wait a couple of games before we make him the best player on the Hawks team (LOL). He does look much better this year, but I am sure that the back problems stem from the fact that he falls so much, because he is always off balance. Lets also hope that his balance is better, because Marvin hitting the boards, and taking and making open shots makes the Hawks a much better team.

The team looks good so far, and I am glad the Drew understands that he will have to play his bench this year. TMac look better than I thought, and if he can stay healthy, he will be the key guy for this team to progress past the second round.

Ken Strickland

December 29th, 2011

RAY-As you said, they’re not playing down to the weaker teams. It certainly not too early for you to realize that fact. Please don’t forget that Pargo didn’t participate in any of our training camp, and hasn’t completely learned our OFF/DEF systems, or his teammates. He’s also nothing more than a fill in until Hinrich returns. Both Green and Hinrich are combo guards, which gives us more size and versatility. His primary job at this point is to provide rest for Teague, run the OFF, and continue to push the ball and play solid perimeter DEF.

Don’t worry about the number of jumpshots we’re taking. Remember, in adding Radmanovic, Green, Pargo, TMac, and Johnson, we’ve added 5 new players who are pretty good jumpshooters, while losing only one(JCrawford). In addition to the number of jumpshots we’ve taken, we’ve also had an increase in the number of FTs taken in the last 2gms.

Doesn’t it seem rather hippocritical for those who claim IT’S TOO EARLY TO JUDGE, to have no problem whatsoever in passing judgement on any player they don’t particularly like within the same time frame?

A Stretch Im just wondering why are we so high off the bulls a good team yes a championship team no. They are like ais sixers, but drose is no a.i. One very good and a bunch of role players who arent great so they sacrfice their bodies for defense. We are better than them we rarely play to our potential.
Now Doc the Heat I think is a real title contender, along with spurs, clips, thunder, and maybe Denver. I agree the heat have Wade and Lebron but after that I think the two best players are JJ & AL & maybe then Josh. I’m just not fond of finesse bigs, I want my bigs rebounding and being tough and he plays too soft for me. I like our chances.
Oh yeah doc I wasn’t saying jc stopped Marvin’s growth but what I’m saying is valid it’s like hey you in the allstar game your season avg can’t be twenty if you getting ten minutes and kobe getting twenty. We can’t beat time or numbers

I must agree with you. How does a player’s leg go numb during the game and no one takes notice, WTF? But then again, this is ASG we’re talking about here, shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. What’s even scarier though is that if there was no lockout, Marvin likely wouldn’t have gotten the surgery, SMH.

Its funny that people are so harsh on Pargo.

He is known to be a bad shooter for his whole career, mostly due to poor shot selection. It’s not that this should surprise anyone.

But yesterday, the majority of his shots were all wide open, within the normal development of the offense and not forced. He simply did not get them to go in.

If he had been throwing bricks on transition or trying to play here, fine, you could all criticize.

I don’t remember some of the guys killing Pargo on the blog being so harsh on Jamal who could go 3 or 4 games in a row ICE COLD whilst bringing zero else to the table.

Pargo had a very decent game in NJ, doing a very good job on D, which is something that Sloan has proven not to be able to do (he is a freeway, even worst on D than Jamal and Bibby together).

Yesterday the match up was a lot more difficult since Wall is virtually unstoppable so practically everyone gets burned by him.

Pargo is our 3rd string PG, so lay off a bit!!!

Both he and Green are new comers which did not even had the benefit of a few days to work and know the system: they are learning and Green was sitting at home so he is probably not even physically ready to work his game.

No more media for this guy. Trade him for Bogut and Leuer or if Im crazy enough to dream Dwight and Andersen/Turkoglu.

I doubt that Horford for Dwight will fly. AT ALL. Now Leuer is starting to impress around the league. But Mbah a Moute and Gooden are owed more money and should play right away instead of developing the perimeter Leuer.

Bogut 1 year removed from injury is a good for a Tyson Chandler type 30mpg as predicted.

I though Jon Leer and Bogut could have been had before but now… Probably have to wait till Bucks slide out of playoffs, because if they;re locked into playoffs no way they want to go to war with Horford.

vava: whatever. who’s talking about pargo starting? not me. we all know what he is role is so no need to expound on that point. but he’s not an nba guard. the guy is a career 38% shooter! a 38% shooter! what you saw last night is not an aberration. he’s god awful. he turns it over like it’s nobody’s business. so tell me exactly what he does well. i think you mentioned something about his d. really? i’ve yet to see him come close to guarding anyone. look i know he’s a end of the bench player all i’m saying is he doesn’t even deserve a freaking seat! go look at his career. the guy has been a joke for too long. even his passes are god awful.

willie green on the other hand has a lot of value. he’s tough, hard working guy that can hit an occasional jumper. he’s got high basketball iq and should contribute throughout the season. its too bad the same can’t be said for pargo.

Teague is about what I thought: Above average scorer, defender, Average court vision, passer. All in all, not an elite PG, but he does take care of the BB. I see him with a Devin Harris type of ceiling, not a DRose, CP3 kind of potential.

In a playoff matchup, the Hawks stack up pretty good against Chicago:

Teague and Hinrich can give Rose and Watson fits.

JJ can handle Rip and Brewer and Korver for that matter

Marvin can come close to Deng, especially if this new Marvin holds up – And TMac is better than anybody Chicago has as a backup 3

Up front, Al and Josh can hang with Boozer and Noah. ZaZa and VladRad can hang with Asik and Gibson.

We are really close to them as far as matchups go. I think Teague and Hinrich being able to at least stay with Rose hurts Chicago’s attack

If they wouldn’t want him NOW for the playoffs, why would they POSSIBLY have wanted him two weeks ago?

Horford is either enough for them to trade for, or he’s not. Geeeeeeeez.

Marvin cannot come close to Deng, and the rebounding advantage is Chicago’s.

The purpose is not to “hang”with a team. The purpose is to give yourself an advantage.

Lakers don’t say Pau can hang with most centers. They say Pau and Bynum lets us grab every other board and get easy layups. We control the rebound control the ball and we control the game .

Hawks give up rebounds and size and it tumbles from there. “Big lineups” wont work because they lack in outside shooting and other skills.

I will be tuned into Lebron vs Marvin. And Joe vs Wade. And Norris Cole has an easier job than Teague. MIA is a defensive unit and Bosh can shoot over our front court players. etc etc

I’ll try not to put too much stock into reg season Jan 1 game but thats a statement game Jan1

I don’t think it’s fair to say Teague ain’t an elite PG just yet…

Dude was the 6th or 7th PG taken in that draft, not top 2-3. Gotta give him time to learn the position and work on his own game.

I don’t deny what folks are saying about him being elite right out the gate just yet, even though he looked pretty beasty against those Bulls. His numbers don’t indicate that he’s ‘elite’, but he’s the what, 4th – 5th option when he’s on the floor behind everybody else. I think he gets his looks through the flow of the offense. Some of those other PG’s have the ability to get their shots off whenever they want, because they are ‘the guy’.

At this stage in Teague’s career, I think he’s just focused on being an efficient PG that doesn’t make too many mistakes.

A few people mentioned this on the previous blog, but it is inexcusable for Philips Arena not to display the stats of the players on the floor on the big stat boards they have hanging from the ceiling. They usually have done this in years past, so maybe they just didn’t have them ready for the opener, but it is still inexcusable. I didn’t know who half the players on the Wizards bench were based on their jersey numbers, and nowhere in the arena did it say.

Wouldn’t be as big of a deal if I could get a signal on my phone inside the arena, though. Free Wi-fi in the arena would be nice.

trade Al Horford before they expose him .. He is too mechanical , doesn’t have post moves and he should like Florida and Florida should love him because he brought them 2 national championships…. Trade Al Horford Kirk Hinrich and and A first round pick for Dwight Howard and Turkalu… Pretty even trade to me and both teams win..

I wouldnt trade Joe for him, I dont think the Hawks could replace the 2 position , and T mac is not the answer at two.. but it would be interestting to see Dwight Howard , Al Horford, and Josh Smith all get alleys by Jeff Teague… and the starting 5 would be so young.. and actually.. I think I would start Marvin at the 2.. thats a crazy line up

so now that I think about it.. If they trade Joe Johnson, it might be best for the Hawks as a strarting 5 team…

Only way the Hawks can afford to sign DH after the trade, and unless you have the money to sign him, renting him for one year makes no sense.
I’d do the trade with JJ and AH. Put Marvin at the 2, and use TMac and Vlad at 3 until Kirk comes back. Then Marvin reverts to 3. Weakens bench, but more than made up by strength at 5.

With Jeff Teague being drafted in ‘09, it was an excellent year to pull a PG. While I give Sund credit for it, he could have easily traded up for a Jonny Flynn also. Some of the names that year:

Minny – Rubio and Flynn, 5&6
GS – Curry at 7
Sac – Tyreke Evans at 3
Mil – Brandon Jennings at 10
Phi – Jrue Holiday at 17
Minny, traded to Denver – Ty Lawson at 18
ATL – Teague at 19
OKC – Maynor at 20
NO, then Indy – Collison at 21
I gotta say this crop may be the best ever in one draft. I say Teague can hold his own with any of them. Perhaps you draft on what position is loaded as opposed to need, unlike what we did the year we chose Shellhead.

Can anyone tell me why we even have divisions in the NBA other than maybe for scheduling? Are they beneficial in a tiebreaker scenario?
The last thing I want to hear is a Gearon coming out and saying how we are fighting for the division crown instead of the LOB trophy. It just sounds like something he would put on his mantle and froth over and tell us only the Lakers and Celtics can claim the same thing…

Does anyone else like the TNT game they play each year on their first night’s coverage? The game is ‘who he play for?’ and EJ tries to get Charles to figure out which players are on which teams. Shaq takes part in this year’s festivities.

Can anyone tell me why we even have divisions in the NBA other than maybe for scheduling? Are they beneficial in a tiebreaker scenario?

Yes. In order to break a tie for playoff positions, if one exists at the end of the regular season, the following criteria will be utilized in the order set forth:

TWO-WAY TIES
1. Results of games against each other.
2. Better winning percentage within own division (only if tied teams are in same division).
3. Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
4. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
5. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
6. Better point differential between offense and defense.
=======

The last thing I want to hear is a Gearon coming out and saying how we are fighting for the division crown instead of the LOB trophy. It just sounds like something he would put on his mantle and froth over and tell us only the Lakers and Celtics can claim the same thing…

So true!

So Teague was the 8th PG drafted or did I miscount?

And no, I’m not judging Teague on 2 games. I’ve been following Teague since Wake. And if you’ll remember I’ve been pushing for him playing more since Woody’s days – and also thought drafting him was a great move.

He’s about what I’ve thought he’d be all along. Judging by his 3 ankle sprains if I’ve counted correctly, he must have weak ankles also.

I’ve said all along I could see Teague as a 15 and 6 or 7 guy on a good team by the time he’s 25. 11 and just under 5 dimes a game is what I predicted last year for him this season, if LD would have sense enough to play him.

Hope I’m wrong and the dude becomes an All Star. He’ll have All Star nights – see Portland. But an all Star season, well that’s a different story.

KevinM, don’t for Ricky Rubio, Toney Donglas and Rodrigue Beaubois. Probably the deepest PG draft of all time, if not the best. I was hoping that Ty Lawson fell into our laps that night, but I was fine with picking Jeff over Maynor, Collison or Donglas. I’ve always thought Jeff was the most athletic PG of everyone, but I forgot that Evans is a PG too. He’s a beast at the PG position, but I still see him as a SG.

kwooden, I was just thinking that perhaps the best way to draft is to go to a position with the most talent, which this ‘09 draft had. Minny for example, drafts 3 PGs, and finally ends up with one to their liking.
I too, had thought Minny would draft another position, and I thought Teague would be a reach, but the more I see, the more I like.
Douglas doesn’t shoot a good percentage and still is trying to find his way as a PG, and Beaubois is the kid that Dallas would not consider in any trade, but only averaging 5pts/2apg right now.

I would hope our PG woes would be over, but one bad ankle would change the potential of this team quickly. We need to get more help there and not wait on Kirk to be ready.

After two blowout wins, the blog community still finds a few bones to pick. Y’all are a trip.

Funny how none of the pundits discussed the Spurs in terms of contenders out West. Didn’t they finish with the best record in the conference last season? Pop will rest the older players as needed and will ensure that they are ready for the playoffs. Until Westbrook proves trustworthy, I don’t believe in the Thunder like so many others.

There are countless story lines in the NBA during this short season. Not only is there a good chance that D12 and Deron are traded during the season, I think Steve Nash may also be dealt. Phoenix looks awful so far (they just added Michael Redd) and Nash is a FA next summer. Trading him could jumpstart their re-building efforts. Also, if the Jefferson-Millsap experiment doesn’t work before the trade deadline, I expect one of those guys to be dealt as well. What happens when the Nuggets try to integrate Aaron Brooks and Wilson Chandler into a team that may be the surprise of the conference by March/April?

This is as good as one of those classic TNT thrillers. The NBA, they know drama.

Copyright that! Knowing of Marvin’s disectomy and serious low back issues? It does change my constructive criticism that I’ve levied on him. The pain level goes beyond a human threshold, so God is only gonna’ allow you to feel up to a certain point, then you just pass out or go munb.

Get Well and Stay Well – Marvin!!!
This is what we’ve all been waiting for. Looks like we’re gonna’ have to grow our own Big 3 and try to re-sign them. I don’t see any Super Stars coming this-a-way anytime soon. LOL!

What I have appreciated so far this season is the attention to defense, the intensity and urgency on defensive plays. It looks like five guys playing on a string, cohesive and with a purpose in mind.

This is where great NBA coaches live. They teach philosophical ideologies, mold characters and push buttons. Championship coaches don’t really fool with scrubs and waste very little time talking to them. The NBA is not where you go to learn fundamentals, add weight, put on muscle and grow a beard. So, what I like most about our bench is that it is long in the tooth. You just can’t teach – experience.

With the health of Marvin (and McGrady)sparking early optimism, the next step for me is the transformation (hopefully) of Jeff Teague from a point guard to a floor leader. The distinction is crtical because skills such as speed, strength and shooting may define a point guard; intellegence and leadership are the hallmarks of a good floor leader. And a great floor leader can be the difference maker for a championship team

.Devin Harris is a very good point guard but his leadership skills have yet to be developed. Jason Kidd doesn’t have the physical skills he once had but his leadership helped the Mavs take home the prize. Chris Paul is a great point guard but an even better floor leader and with the right talent around him he can lead a team a long way.

Yikes Lopez and Bass? I wouldn’t go that far but, eye on playoffs, How do you feel about a future 2nd rounder and Horford for 7 footer Jon Leuer at Forward and Andrew Bogut at center?

Horford destroys low grade centers but thats about it, he’s peaked and his ceiling is a complementary rebounder that needs to be carried on offense and defense.

This is another misconception. Jamal did not take shots from Marvin. Marvin was scared to take shots that were there. He had many opportunities prior to Jamal being here to establish himself. This is part of the reason LD told him to be more aggressive. Marvin should be blamed for Marvin, nobody else. If he was injured for three years, he should have had surgery three years ago. The next step for him is to see if his shot stop falling, will be still be aggressive, or go back to the passive Marvin.

Rod, chances are, Marvin received a few options for his back. And like most people (professional athletes and the common person) he opted for the less evasive option first. In pro sports, we see it all of the time. An athlete is told that something can be treated with rest and exercise, only to find out sometime later that surgery is required. My guess is that any surgery likely would have meant that Marvin would miss games (based on a normal off-season schedule). I think most fans would prefer to see their team’s players “tough it out” or “rub dirt on it” before under-going the knife. Finally, if he was truly feeling numbness in his leg, that could certainly explain some of the falls. Ever try to do much running or jumping when your leg is asleep?

Now, with all that said, I agree about Marvin’s passiveness. Like every NBA player, he will have games when his shot doesn’t fall but hopefully he will continue to do work on the boards. I am also interested in seeing how well he defends against some of the better SFs in the league (which he hasn’t faced yet). That is another area that can be a consistent strength regardless of his shooting percentage.

Brook Lopez is soft.

NJ is within striking distance of Orlando midway through the 3rd because Brook Lopez is gone.
He is inept at defense and shoots too much at average efficiency.

NJ is playing defense 1 on 1 to Dwights and then guards are scoring off Isos.

Lopez plays the wrong way and is soft. Mentally and physically to slow and lazy to rebound or box out.

I can point out Horford;s weaknesses as a defensive anchor but one center I’m not looking for is a “scoring center”. Lopez cant effect the game without the ball and is not dominant with it.

his best season Win Shares per minute is virtually tied with such 1 dimensional players as Hasheem Thabeet.

I’ll agree Marvin’s problems do relate to his aggressiveness, but honestly he has had periods where he is aggressive…only to fall or get undercut on a drive where he hurts his back. The back has been an issue since he arrived in the ATL.

I dissagree about Jamal. Dude commanded the ball and you definitely saw everyone defer to him. You’ll see Teague, Joe, Josh, Marvin & Al relish the idea that they’ll definitely get more shots. I’m not trying to knock Jamal because he was ready to shoot when our guys needed seasoning. Now that he’s gone and our folks have had time to learn, they’ll be ready.

I hope Jamal does well. I see our guys doing the same all year. Same as Teague waving by to Bibby. He was overdue for that opportunity. Now he’s shining. Hopefully Kirk will play his role when he returns and allows the young fella to continue to develop with a quality backup ready to assist.

The Hawks are wayyyy underestimated by the media.

I know Hawks fans are a joke. No one cheers at the games besides the fan section and maybe 40 other people in the whole arena.

Go watch a Blazers game (no we’re not talking about the Heat, Thunder, Celtics, Nuggets fans….The F’ing Blazers) and look how enthusiastic those fans our. I think ATL has the worst fans in the NBA.

And screw ASG for what they did to Philips Arena. The arena is barren – there are no score updates besides some pathetic bar above the premium section telling how man points the person at the FT line has. The average fan has no way of instantly knowing who is in the game because the stats grid above the sections behind the baskets IS NO LONGER THERE.

HALFTIME IS A JOKE – THERE ARE NO EVENTS.

JUST SELL THE TEAMS GEARON. NO ONE WANTS YOU HERE

AJ – You are correct – Teague and Westbrook doesn’t work on the trade machine – Hinrich for Westbrook does – but I doubt seriously OKC thinks about that deal even with a 1st pick thrown in.

There is a growing consensus I hear on sportradio and read that either Durant or Westbrook has to go from OKC. This goes back to last season. And I’m sure it won’t be Durant who leaves.

OKC does have a pretty good plan B in Eric Maynor. Plan C not so good – don’t they have Royal Ivey as plan C?

Jannero Pargo was the no.4 PG in Chicago. They kept Lucas, who is really bad, instead of him as the #3 PG. So what are we expecting from Jannero Pargo? I think he’s a serviceable backup until Hinrich gets back.

And he and Green are learning the playbook on the fly. Let’s see where he’s at in a couple of weeks. He did play with CP3, so even stuff he tells Teague in that regard may be valuable, just like Hinrich played with Rose in Chicago.

Grandmaster JeJe

Big Ray,

They should’ve traded Russell for CP3, but should now try get Rondo.

Let Westbrook score his 28 ppg in Boston. That team will blow hard next year (it will already suffer this year. Jermaine O’Neal is their starting center. LMAO). Rondo will let KD score and rack up 90 assists a game with that offense

AJ – Gotta admit a team with Westbrook, Josh, and Ivan could make some noise for various reasons in the media.

But if you get Westbrook, and then swing a deal for Dwight (farfetched I know), you’ve got a potential lineup of:

Westbrook
JJ
Hedo
Josh
Dwight

You can win a Championship with that lineup in my opinion.

With the newfound Marvin, Orlando may even listen to a Al+Marvin trade for Dwight and Hedo’s bad contract.

Stranger things have happened.

Observations:

(1) My semi-retirement may have been premature.
* If the present trend continues [and I hope it does]
I may have to apologize to Mr Sund and Mr Gearon;
due to my sabbatical from the blog being triggered by those two !

(2) Pargo needs to go / just chiming in on that debate.
He plays inspired defense, but, atrocious shooting and turnovers
negate any positive effect gained on defense.

(3) kirk will be a tremendous [positive] addition to our already formidable bench.

(4) McGrady can have an immeasurable effect on the team’s offense;
** by playing in the post ** if they will use him to that affect.
He is one crafty vet. ….. He also gives our team cachet due to his achievements.

(5) Rad-man another “crafty” vet

(6) Willie Green – nice guy / would have preferred a Big
* but who am I to say … I’m retired … and Sund/Gearon are “the Men”.

(7) northcyde – I’ve seen Joe playing really good def. [including off the ball]

(8) The defense has been inspired & the ball movement on offense is beautiful.

(9) Why is Jason Collins on the team ? [I know, I know, he guards one guy really well]

(10) LD is not a bad X’s and O’s coach.

(11) Jeff Teague has been an inspiration !
* [also my apologies to Marv - I did not know he was hurt]
** (understandable – that he has been ineffective)

(12) The Hawks have been playing splendidly,
to which I say, if they play at the same level of
-teamwork with intensity-
exhibited this week;
then they -can- contend with Chicago and Miami !

note:
my remarks are more analytical rather than my usual mindset of
thinking of ways to fix things.
As noted previously, the Hawks are in good hands, and are to be applauded.
One cannot fix what ain’t broken.
If they get a really good Big man, I’ll probably un-retire.
Until then – I’m waiting for change.
[or to admit that Sund/Gearon are closet geniuses / whichever comes 1st]
For now, Go Hawks !

Do yawl remember Ray Buchannan of the Falcons? On Every touch down he got beat on, Big Play Ray would vehemently protest. He did back flips to sway the official referees. Yes, Mr. Buchannan was guilty of the “Thou dost’ protest too much” – syndrome.

Here’s my point: If, we can get Marvin hungry, and he becomes that nasty beast who gives you 15 & 8 every night? Marvin would be Udonis Haslem with a 3 point shot.

Check the mans stats the past couple of years 20pts/7reb/2/blocks per 35minutes is pretty good IMO. The last few years Lopez has destroyed our frontline -Zaza/Jumpshot/Smoove I saw those games when we had no answer for the guy. The guy is a top teir C in this league -the only C’s i put in front of him are DH12,Bynum, possibly NeNe/MGasol

Stop with the trades man -we are’nt going after Bogut/Leur…….

Also DH12 wants to go to a winner and we would have to give up to much for him. JJ Horford ZaZa 1st round pick may get The GM’s attention but I dont see him coming home.

DMB, that entertainment report on Bynum is gold. No way Orlando takes on that problem, and if Bynum is doing that stuff playing with Kobe, his pattern will continue elsewhere. And he is being paid already.
I wonder what the Lakers are thinking with him out and they are still winning.

Vava, JC1 with 22/5 on the unbeaten Blazers…..14 of those in the 4th.

@Some of us know

It isnt all true either, Hawks did gague about acquire D12 until the Magic stop all talks but those talk would probably be coming back up very soon, since they dont want to lose D12 for nothing, like what happen to Shaq.

Atlanta will be in those talks when it started back up and might have a slight lead. But if I was Otis Smith and the Magic front office, I find a way to ship him out as soon as possible, then you can get a better value in the trade market, plus this circus can stop and they can move on with their lives.

Geemack, you are right. Miami believes they’re better. If, however, someone can get inside MW’s head and get him fired up, he could put pressure on LeBron enough to make it interesting. 5 on 5, I like the Hawks’ chances against Miami, especially later in the year with Kirk back, assuming no one else gets hurt. Right now, Miami obviously has the edge. Marvin’s the key….scary, huh

Astro Joe

Maybe instead of fixating on D12, the Hawks should look at acquiring Deron Williams. It looks like he is in “sleep-walk” mode these days. I know that he is from Dallas and Cuban has created space (and all but sacrificed tis season) to bring in someone like Deron, but if he would sign an extension, I’d snap him up in a heartbeat. I think he is more of a leader than Howard or some of the other guys that bloggers fantasize about acquiring. At some point, this team needs a definitive leader to take the next step (and no, I don’t think Stack is that guy).

Nets are a mess because their roster is awful (even with Brook Lopez). They will never get Dwight with that current trade package (or possibly, ever). Deron is leaving for Dallas after the season unless he is traded somewhere.

I believe that the reason LD has even considered putting Josh at the 3 was because of what we haven’t been getting from Marvin. I always thought that it was up to Marvin to publish the ‘LeBron’ rules and be the key defender on him back in the Cleveland days.
Going forward, now in order to compete with Miami:
- Joe has to handle DWade ( tall order )
- Marvin still has to figure how to neutralize LeBron
- Al and Josh have to outplay Bosh/Haslem
- Teague has to hold his own against Chalmers.

Looking at that, I don’t think there is enough to beat them with any regularity.

Now Sund is going to have to go out and find us a Collins type player to help with the Heat. I remember how Damien did an adequate job last year on LeBron. Our bench doesn’t have that guy.

KZ

“-Teague has to hold his own against Chalmers.”

Teague has to do far more than “hold his own” against Chalmers. He has to destroy him on the court because we have unfavorable matchups at pretty much all positions

KevinM, my memory could be deceiving me, but I remember that Marvin did a very good job on LeBron in the preseason game last year. Maybe Lebron was dailing it in since it was preseason or maybe Marvin’s back was not hurting that early into the year, but I do have a recollection of being impressed that Marvin could be a defensive stopper against Lebron.

Astro, someone who goes into sleep-walking mode because his team is weak is NOT A GOOD LEADER.

People everywhere love to think about scenarios which would blow the roster to get just one player when there is not guarantee that this “magic player” will bring any wins.

How did it pan out for Deron in Utah, with a GREAT coach and a pretty decent supporting cast?

And what about Howard? Yes, they went to the finals, but last year, with a very decent supporting cast they fell against us.

Neither Deron, nor Paul, nor Howard guarantee a ring if you have to ditch too much talent.

Heck, just look at MIA, with 2 superstars, 1 star and garbage and the result was that they did not win last year.

So, breaking up the roster in a dramatic fashion to get Howard would guarantee us ZERO.

With this I am not saying that we should not consider all options, all the time, but we have to be realistic about the feasibility and the balance of all deals.
