Wizards at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Zaza Pachulia said he woke up today with soreness in his left shoulder. He tested it before the game and said he’s good to go. Pachulia doesn’t remember suffering an injury. He went to the doctor this afternoon and was told it’s tendinitis.
  • Jeff Teague (ankle) is in the lineup. “He didn’t complain about any problems,” Larry Drew said. Kirk Hinrich (shoulder) and Donald Sloan are inactive. Mo Evans (knee) is out and Jan Vesley (hip) is not on the trip for Washington.
  • Jordan Crawford is back at Philips Arena for the first time since the Hawks traded him to the Wizards. He said there’s no extra motivation against his old team: “I’m always extra.” He did allow that there could be some spirited conversations with good friend Teague. “If it calls for it, I will definitely trash talk.”
  • Drew said his main concern vs. the Wizards is controlling John Wall in transition. “He’s one of the fastest guys in the league,” Drew said. “We have to get him corralled. We’ve had problems with him in the past. He’s kind of the head of the snake for them.”
  • Drew on the thing he liked the most about last night’s W at New Jersey: “Their energy and defensive activity. We’ve been preaching for the longest about being a better defensive team.”
  • The Hawks said last night’s telecast on SportSouth earned a 2.82 rating. The highest-rated game last season earned a 2.68 rating.

LOL @ Jordan . . . “I’m Always Extra”.

Hopefully JJ will show no mercy on the kid tonight ( although I do need him to ball a little, seeing that he’s on my fantasy squad. )

Man, the more I hear from and about that kid, the more I wish the Hawks hadn’t traded him. He’s got a great attitude and a lot of talent. Hawks had to pay a pretty high price to get rid of Bibby.

Well Its going to be ugly. Why is no one in the NBA saying , “hey, I want to play with Al horford something about 12 pts and 9 rebounds that smells like an NBA championship to me”

Why is All NBA All STAR Al not on nobody’s short list? Cant they see that Although Al only scored 2 pts in the last coach’s mercy pick addition to theAllstar team that All is destine to win a World championship? Cant any body see that ? Makes no sense. What about 12pts and 9 rebound dont you understand people?

________
Warrior!

Zaza playing? That guy is tuff warrior. Hopefully, we see some Ivan Johnson too. The main thing I look for is defensive tenacity and energy from the starters and bench.
_________

Coach Drew and (all of you have said this as well), …

“Drew on the thing he liked the most about last night’s W at New Jersey: “Their energy and defensive activity. We’ve been preaching for the longest about being a better defensive team.” -MC-

This is the level where you’re coaching a team’s identity, traits and habits. Not so much fundamental NBA skills to developmental levels of “project” talent. We’re not the Spurs where we can develop people. Dund and Drew are on a very short leash – right – SlimJr?

That collar is on “choke hold” levels – right – SlimJr? LOL

Here’s my point: this team’s bench look like seasoned collard greens and pig’s tails sittin’ on white rice And sprinkled with some hot sauce. We don’t need no kids – we need some winners – man. I never seen a young team win A trophy.

Regarding Jamal Crawford – he was a big bandaid on a gaping wound.

Dude can score, will always be able to score. But he was a one-man second unit, and often a substitution for when the first unit wasn’t getting it done.

We are better off with having anywhere from two to four guys who can score for us…and defend. Not bashing Jamal at all, just what he represented – poor roster management. You never want a one man bench. Never.

in terms of offensive production, this game is almost identical to last night’s so far, minus the 3 point percentage. Defense has been great as well, it’s just that the Wizards aren’t as bad as the Nets. If they keep up this tempo through the rest of the season, the Hawks will easily be a 4th seed if not better as they will take care of the worser teams easily, and maybe throw in some good games against the better teams as well.

@Runner – If there is one thing we learned from last year, it is that L.Drew does not have faith when it comes to regularly playing bench players (other than could-be starters such as Jamal). One of the things I was most excited about with the start of last season was Jeff Teauge, I thought he was going to take us over the top. However – he barely got any playing time, (until of course the bulls series). That being said, I don’t think the same will happen this season, the only reason being the lockout. So to answer your question – yes, but not because of L.Drew.

Ryder ,

I don’t know. I know that the Magic would be smarter to get Horford out of the deal than Smith, because they’ll need a guy who CAN play PF/C for them with Dwight gone.

Thing is, Hawks have to be smart not only about such a trade, but how they follow it up. I can understand wanting to unload Joe’s contract. But if you trade him and Al to Orlando, that leaves Dwight and “I can’t stop with the jumpers” Josh up here with Marvin and Teague.

It’s a nice frontcourt, but who plays the 2 for us? Need a role player who can shoot from the outside, but doesn’t need the ball as much as Joe does.

Hawks4Eva,

I agree. Zaza is clumsy at times. But most of the time he does not play outside of his capability (he does at times, but so does Josh Smith). Most of the time, he gives us what we need – rebounding, a little toughness, a few buckets here and there.

Jason Collins has basically one assignment, and that’s it. I think the fact that he came here for a minimum contract (which he’s had each year) and there was no other team clamoring to sign him – this means something. Not that he’s a terrible player. But look at his stats even when he DOES play. Dude doesn’t rebound, doesn’t block shots, doesn’t score.

I think he could get some more burn, true. But he doesn’t do more than Zaza does. Again, several years ago, I would have taken him over Zaza. But not now.

Ryder,

I get you. One could only hope. And that’s the trick – convincing Howard that enoug of the right pieces will be put into place to make a championship contender. Howard has to be leery of that after having watched a championship level squad get torn apart the very year after they went to the Finals.

The ASG would have a lot to prove, with very little historical evidence to back them up. Still, as you say – having Josh here helps, and Teague/Hinrich are certainly serviceable at PG. Marvin is a good piece as well, now that he’s healthy and playing aggressively.

My next question is this – what do you do about the HC? Could Larry coach a team with a completely different setup than what he’s had in the ATL? Do the ASG have the brains to go out and get a different coach, a veteran, somebody who could work with such a squad?

Phil,

No doubt. Sam earned it, and I remember very clearly when he took over for Kenny Smith – in the playoffs no less. My point was that championship rings alone aren’t credentials, that’s all. And actually, if you look back, you see where I agreed with you by saying that the Wiz were smart to bring Cassell in – nothing better for tutoring a potentially great PG with one who was great when HE played.

Oddly enough, and this is no bash on Teague – but I don’t see Teague as a potentially “great” pg…along the mold of a John Wall/Derrick Rose type. Therefore, bringing in a guy like Cassell has its limits.

However, there is more potential for guys like Horford (potential to be very good) and Smith (potential to be great) at their respective positions. Both have some issues from a mental standpoint.

Horford has to be tougher mentally, or rather – get his toughness back. Josh just has to f@cking listen to people when they tell him he can rule the roost by scoring down low.

Unless you want to say that Sam Cassell and Adam Morrison are on the same level….”

Whats your point? If Adam Morrison was a part of a championship team and helped with practice and a role (no matter how small) on the team he is a part of what it took to get to that championship, so that ring is as much earned from him as it is from Sam Cassell. Morrison probably put out 110% of who he was, and had an impact regardless of whether it was visible to us or not. Whats your point? Thats why they call it a team sport, because no man gets there by himself. Its not a 1 man sport or only the”5 starters” sport. Every player from top to bottom has to contribute his maximum value in order to reach and win a championship

So whats your point?

I was thinking the same thing. I dont know if Drew is up to the task. There is a lot of opportunities If the hawks match up the way you just described. Youd need an X/O ’s coach and Drew aint it. but…His contract is light. Get Howard before the seasons out, Then pick a coach to mesh with the new squad. I think there will be a nice pocket to pick from. But lets not put the cart before the horse. Get Howard here first. Then get the coach.

Having said that, I was fairly well pleased with Al’s play tonight. Better than the night before. I’ll always take a double double.

Josh could have played better. He’s so dang talented. Still, he hit most of his free throws and again – I’ll always take a double double. Dude should have had 20 and 10 tonight. Drives me crazy….

Marvin – 17 and 8 aren’t world-beating numbers but I’m so glad to see him play so much better, so much more effectively, so much more aggressive – that I am much more effusive than maybe I should be.

Joe – I like that he’s not working so hard to get his points. His 3 point shooting made up for a somewhat subpar FG% overall, defense was there (not that he was challenged in that area), and 4 assists work for me. No complaints.

Teague – some not so great shots and foul trouble, but this guy is growing well. 5 assists to 2 turnovers and some good court awareness. Jumper is a work in progress still, but if he keeps working, it will get there. Might need to work more on midrange than 3s, but I like his confidence.

Bench – this time it was T-Mac who did most of the damage, but 30 points from the bench ain’t bad.

Ryder,

My point…since you asked me 4 billion times in a single post – is that having a championship ring does not mean you are guaranteed to contribute something to another team because of that ring.

I’ll give you an example.

Sam Cassell contributes the knowledge, the know-how, the “been there, done that” of his former playing days as a key member of the championship winning Houston Rockets. He brings something to the Wizards as a member of their coaching staff – he can show John Wall the ropes.

Tell me what Adam Morrison brings to another team? The ability to practice his a$$ off? Any D-Leaguer looking for an NBA job can do that.

So here’s another one for ya – Josh Powell. Former Los Angeles Laker. Has a ring, from when the Laker last one a championship, couple of years ago.

Tell me what did he bring to the Hawks? Championship level practice? Great locker room chemistry? What? Last I saw, he started off the year ok, then faded badly and eventually could hardly get playing time, and sucked when he did.

He contributed very little. Championship ring didn’t define who or what he was. He did.

Solid game tonight Hawks, not as much bench production as last night but you can’t expect that from your bench, I mean they’re in the bench for a reason. T-Mac is a good shooter, and is more aggressive than I thought he would be. Al needs to work on that jump shot a bit and he’ll be back, and Smoove needs to cut down on it and he’ll be good. Anyway, good game by the Hawks, they can rest at home until Friday, until another lopsided win comes our way!!

But here’s the thing.

Smith isn’t ever going to listen.

Horford isn’t going to get tougher.

8 yrs and 5 yrs in…it isn’t going to change.

Ideally, I’d like to disagree. But I’m a realist, so I tend to agree. Horford doesn’t have to get tougher, he just has to get back to who he was his first two years in the League. Tonight, he looked kinda like he did. Not quite like how he was against Boston in the 2008 playoffs, but at least back to double-double land.

As for Smith, this continually points to a higher problem.

If Josh ain’t gonna listen, why’s he still a member of the core?

Ownership/management has to be smarter about this – either bring in a guy who can get Josh to listen better, or find a way to move Josh without hurting the team in the mid/long-term. Neither option is guaranteed, and neither is easy.

As for Josh’s efforts – yes they are there. But again, there is a difference between effective effort and misplaced effort. Josh plays great on the defensive end most of the time – nearly all of the time.

On the offensive end, he is less than efficient, and sorry – but if most of the team played that inefficiently on the offensive end, we would be a 30 win team in an 82 game season.

Ryder,

Don’t be humbled, you are certainly not in the presence of a genius, my friend. Yes, I agree that every player on a championship team has in some way earned his way.

My only point was that some guys contributed enough in certain ways that allows them to pass on the knowledge and experience of that championship to other teams, whether as a player or a coach, or whatever.

And some…don’t. It’s kind of like a resume. Maybe a guy like Adam Morrison will turn out to be a good coach. What he won’t do, is take his basketball talents, such that they are, and make another team’s starting lineup or bench that much better….unless their bench really, really sucks. Let’s not forget – Morrison was a lottery draft pick…

Have you not read ‘cast not your pearls before swine’?

Let me tell you what a champion is, Big Ray.

A man who has no legs but gets implants and prosthetic s a and teaches his self to walk, finds a job and feeds a family. Hes a champion Ray and Can teach about the highest levels of life as well as Sam Cassel can, because being a champion is more than dribbling and shooting a basketball. Its about life and being the best you can be Ray. So at that time in Josh Powel’s life who is to say he wasn’t the best he could be and brought a championship effort to the team? I dont think you or I know him like that and we don’t know what went on in the locker rooms and in the homes of the athletes.

Have you not read ‘cast not your pearls before swine’?

I’ll have to admit to being a tad bit befuddled by this one. Are you calling ME swine (nothing new, I’m a cop – we’ve been called pigs for a millenia) or are you saying that the Hawks are swine because Powell and what he represented was a pearl that the Hawks could not appreciate?

I do know this – Powell left the Lakers…a championship contender damn near every year. Why? One of the reasons he gave was playing time. Ummmm…doesn’t sound like a championship attitude to me. You give up being a Laker where you play with one of the greatest (Kobe) to sign a one year contract with the….Hawks? Either he made that decision, or the Lakers made it for him.

Either way, you’re going to have a hell of a time proving to me where this heart of a champion, pearl of a basketball player exists.

I don’t disrespect your opinion, and I certainly agree that we don’t know the guy personally (or at least I don’t). All I can judge off of is what I saw on the court – and I wasn’t impressed.

Ryder,

I didn’t ignore it. I tried to take it easy on you with that one. But here goes….

I think Josh has listens as much as he needs to. We (the bloggers and fans) arent always right.

So is the coach wrong as well? How many articles did we see, most written by the AJC staff themselves, where Coach Drew, Josh Smith, and his jumpshooting were the subject?

I agree fans aren’t always right. In fact, we’re often wrong. But are you telling me that commentators (such as Dominique, who while no wizard with words, did play the game for a long time, and at a rather high level), and Josh’s own damn coach are wrong? Because they’ve been saying the same damn things we have – stop taking so many long jumpers and attack the basket.

Hey, if you don’t agree with that philosophy, fine. But some NBA experts and some NBA coaches might just be the kind of guys whose opinion means something….even if it is similar to that of us dumba$$ bloggers…

in fact all the firsts players played in the flow of things and were on target except al to start the game. the second unit lost its lightening from lastnight as pargo, vlad, and green turned sour to the point ld had to bring in the starters abruptly in the first half then again to protect a 23 point lead that was being frittered away.
