Atlanta Hawks: ‘Old rookie’ Ivan Johnson vows to keep his cool after past blowups

Hope you had a good holiday, blog people. The Hawks were back in action today after a break and that means I am, too . . .

Today was the first time I got to ask Larry Drew about the decision to waive Keith Benson, the team’s only draft pick in June.

“It really came down to the progress of Ivan Johnson,” Drew said. “To be perfectly honest, we didn’t know he would come on the way he did. He’s had, not a good training camp, he’s had a phenomenal training camp. His motor is something you can’t teach and he brings that motor every practice. You guys see the way he plays in games. He just plays hard and there’s not enough guys like that.”

Johnson, 27, said he wasn’t sure he’d ever make the league but, before his mother died in 2007, he promised her he would keep trying.

“As you get older your dream starts to fade after a while,” he said. “You have just got to keep pushing, man. That’s what I kept doing.”

Fans at Atlanta’s exhibition game against Charlotte Thursday seemed to take a liking to Johnson. He also was a popular topic of discussion among my Twitter followers and my blog people.

Johnson said he wasn’t aware of the support from fans but appreciates that they like his high-energy style.

“That’s how you’ve got to be,” he said. “I’m an old rookie. Being 27, I’ve got to put in a lot of work.”

Johnson is an intimidating dude–the joke among Hawks staff was who would tell Johnson he was cut if the day came. He’s built like a linebacker and always seems to look angry. One day in practice Johnson came barreling down the lane with the ball and Tracy McGrady wisely stepped aside.

“Ain’t no [bleeping] way I’m getting in front of him,” T-Mac said.

Johnson said he’s not as mean as he looks (”I’m really a nice, cool dude”) but his temper had hurt his chances of getting an NBA shot after he had good production in the D-League.

Johnson was banned by the Korean Basketball League last year after what an official described as “a record of frequent misconducts” culminating with an obscene gesture at a game official. Johnson also was reportedly run off from Oregon for “anger management” issues and last season was benched by the Erie BayHawks after earning too many technical fouls.

“That’s just my emotions for the game,” Johnson said. “If I feel I’m being cheated, my emotions, they go crazy sometimes. That’s what I’ve been working on. I try to keep my cool. As long as I keep my cool, I’m good.”

Obviously there won’t be much tolerance for such antics from a back-of-the-rotation guy for the Hawks. Johnson said he’s motivated to stay level-headed because he has a baby due in March.

“I have been working so hard to get here over the years,” he said. “Now that I’m here, ain’t no messing it up.”

Drew said the Hawks checked into Johnson’s background before signing him and are satisfied he won’t be a problem.

“He’s moved on and we feel good about moving on as well,” Drew said.

Practice report

  • Jeff Teague (ankle) participated in practice and said he’s good to go for tomorrow: “It’s a little sore but it will be OK.’ Larry Drew said he wanted to see how Teague looked after practice but, remember, it was an injury that derailed Teague in camp last year so I’m thinking he won’t sit. “Not this time,” Teague said, smiling.
  • Drew on the team’s depth: “We have added a lot to our bench from an experience standpoint and I think from a depth standpoint. I think it’s going to be a matter of us being healthy as much as we can. It may be a situation where have to use the bench a lot more than in the past.”
  • The Hawks are in a better spot than those teams who had two weeks to throw together a lot of main cogs. Still, rotation guys McGrady and Vladmir Radmaonivic are new and Jannero Pargo and Willie Green are brand new.
  • “They are still trying to learn what we do,” Drew said. “Do they have it down 100 percent? No. We have been trying to cram in a lot in a short period of time. I am sure heads are spinning a little bit right now. Once we get started with it I am sure they will adjust and become more comfortable.”
  • Drew on nine games in 12 days, something that’s new for all of the Hawks except ‘99 lockout vets T-Mac and Jerry Stackhouse: “It’s going to be a true challenge from the standpoint of basketball and the travel as well. I’ve been preaching to the guys since Day 1 about taking care of themselves. It not only becomes a physical drain but a mental drain as well. It’s going to be important that we all get our proper rest and eat right.”
  • Unlike Johnson, D-League refugee Donald Sloan figured his NBA shot would eventually come after the Kings cut him in camp last year: “With the amount of work I put in and the relationships I’ve built with coaches throughout draft process and last year in the D-League, I figured there was no way I could be denied this year. It kind of worked in my favor this year. I stayed positive throughout.”
  • I wrote a story about Joe Johnson. You can read it here if you’d like.

@ Rod i couldn’t have said it better myself, all we get is al saying I don’t wanna play the post, though at one time Josh did say he knows he’s better in the post.
@ Doc I just don’t see all the significant moves that everyone else made to get better, the Knicks made a good play, but billups will be missed come playoff time, funny no one calls them cheap cause they didn’t keep chauncy and go into the luxury tax?
I look at it like this in 2007 when we took the eventual champs to seven though the media said we would get swept, the next year we omproved and the year after that we sweep boston in the regular season cause the fear was gone, problem was we faced Orlando in the post season and we where scared of DH and were swept. But the next season we were pose to sweep Orlando but beat them 3-1 in the regular season and went on the road to thrash them in the post season. These aren’t fictional stories just facts. We weren’t suppose to win a game against a bulls team with only one star player but we won two which should a been three but were cheated down the stretch in that fourth quarter game, plus LD killed us with his jamal favoritism.
All I’m stating is I see no reason why the Hawks shouldn’t be the second best team in the east this year,I look at the bulls like us versus the Magic.DH was the best player on the court but after him the next 3best players were all hawks,Indy,Milwaukee,Detroit,Orl,Philly none of those teams are of any consequence and i like the sixers problem is their best player isn’t better than our top two same with milwaukee, and indy.Just thinking if Granger,Iggy,,or Bogut was that good why haven’t these teams been of relevance period in the postseason
One nice trade a work wonders with this bunch and push us into contention. The reason we are not mentioned in elite status cause we don’t have that media darling like denver who will be solid all year long

Sautee,

“But if Blatche were leading the league in FG% from 16-23 ft., would he still say the same?”

Not if he was Al Horford. LOL

I have no fear saying barring injuryteague will get most improved player, like the year gilbert was unleased from Golden State . This is going to be the best NBA season in a long time savor it good games on every night with alot of up and coming teams they need to keep the schedule brutal like this.

Rod,

My point exactly. Boy needs to plant himself inside, and take the 16 fters when they come in transition, or within the offense. Don’t get me wrong, he needs to shoot his midrange, but he needs to establish himself inside first. And not hang at the elbow for 16 seconds.

Rod,

Yeah, me too. I know you’ve seen me say that Horford needs to be inside a lot more, even if his effectiveness is barely sufficient. It just sets up the game better when you work inside-out.”

I believe this is what Miami is starting to do as well. I like this approach. But why can’t we work that way and improve our FG% in the paint? Why can’t we go from 29th in the league to 10th? We supposedly have the 2nd or 3rd best C in the East, and we have a guy who is mucho better inside than facing the basket.

I want more inside activity instead of the high-flyin’ jump shootin’ Atlanta Hawks. Will we miss JC1? Perhaps to a point, but our focus should be on getting closer to the basket because of our ‘game experience’ alone. The other way isn’t getting it done.

2-16 in round 2……yuk!

And 680 has the worse support for the Hawks. 790 represented them at least some with NBA talk. How many hours do we need to dwell on a Falcons loss or cut to the Braves weekly report in December?

We have NO reason to not win by like 20 points tonight.

NJN is coming off a BACK TO BACK.

For once, can we please use that to our ADVANTAGE and run them off the court?

Their lineup stinks. They are short of talent. Their center is hurt. Put a damn body on Humphries and put this weak team away

What’s there to be excited about in Atlanta…

Between the Hawks and the Falcons, fans are just left waiting for next season.

We’ll see what these Hawks can do starting tonight…

yeah doc he will try,but when will he be ready.I personally see billups as a better playerniether is a real point in my ipinion and billups has strengh and defense in his arsenal.
I figure this season is going to be about topnotch veteran teams and real thoroughbred young studs. The half court game is only gonna come into play come the end of the season and playoff time, cause the nba has gotten alot younger, the best team the heat is also the most athletic and the two teams under them in my opinion the clippers, and thunder are equally athletic.
It’s like a copycat league like football, you have to design your team to either compete with the best team,or beat them, the mavs just got past because they were the vets and it was just written, besides they had the best team, this year not so much, this is actually the team of a bunch of old men not the spurs or celtics at leats they are young at the key position pg,a below avg pg and perimeiter defense is not taking you far at all, thats no longer a weakness for the hawks doc

He’s another guy like DeAndre who will be overpaid because he is tall and athletic. But all his talent has not resulted in the wiz making the playlets. Career 60 percent ft shooter… Not a go to guy.

Both Teague and Pargo can and will put consistent pressure on the ball, which is something we were definitely unable to do with Bibby and Jamal at PG. That means a lot of teams will be forced to start their OFF farther out than they did with them at PG. JJ and Green will also be able to put pressure on SGs, while Marvin and TMac can put pressure on their SFs. We can expect the same from Josh and Ivan at SF. Horford and Zaza should dominate them at OC.

I wonder if Twin will get much PT since he played for the Nets when they went to the NBA finals.

Wow, Mike Glenn boasting how T-Mac and Stack could give us 30 on a given night, but not sure if they could do it every night.
Mike Glenn just lost credibility with me on that comment. Haha, 2 former top 10 picks making up for the loss of JC1.
