Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 92, Bobcats 75 (exhibition)

  • In just five days the games will count for the Hawks. It’s hard to know what conclusions can be drawn from two exhibition games against one of the worst teams in the East. So I guess most of the following analysis comes with that disclaimer.
  • Fans responded to Ivan Johnson’s energetic, physical play. So did his teammates. “I was impressed,” Al Horford said. “The thing I like the most about him is he’s aggressive. He goes out there and plays hard. He’s fearless. I think he would be a nice addition to our team.”
  • I never would have thought so–Johnson is an undersized, over-aged prospect at a position where the Hawks have up to five guys as options. But Johnson has produced and made the most of his chance, earning a “very close look” from Drew.
  • “When we had him in the minicamp the thing that intrigued me was how hard he played,” Drew said. “He is capable of making shots but he’s like a Mack truck in there at times. If you get in his way he will run you over. If there is a loose ball he doesn’t care who’s around him, he’s going after it. We need that on our team. He brings a presence when he’s on the floor, a physicality when he’s on the floor.”
  • There were times when the Hawks looked like a bona fide, hard-nosed defensive team. “We really committed to it,” Horford said.
  • Atlanta’s defense improved once Jannero Pargo replaced Donald Sloan at point guard. Pargo had more success keeping D.J. Augustin and Kemba Walker out of the lane.
  • The Hawks look a lot different when Jeff Teague (ankle) is in the lineup to slow dribble penetration. Teague said he would be ready to go on Tuesday.
  • Sloan (three assists, no turnovers) was steadier on offense than he was Monday. “I thought he did a good job stepping in for Jeff Teague in running the club,” Drew said.
  • Brad Wanamaker played six ineffective minutes in the second quarter, turning the ball over three times, and then never saw the court again. Pape Sy wasn’t as aggressive as in the first game but played just 10 minutes.
  • The Bobcats were able to finish at the rim but that was in spite of Josh Smith and Al Horford challenging everything at the basket (Walker is going to be a good one). Smith and Horford also led an energetic effort when the Hawks trapped.
  • Zaza Pachulia was good on D, too. He stays in good position and challenges everything (if only he could jump higher those more of those would be blocked shots). He rebounds and gets to the line. Zaza quietly had a very good camp.
  • Smith got what he wanted around the basket. I’m thinking the newly-slim frame and better health means we’ll see more of that this season. He’s so quick to the hole and even more explosive when he gets there.
  • Joe Johnson had a bad shooting night (3 for 11) but it looked to me like he often was just working on his one-on-one moves. He had his hesitation game working and got to the line for six free-throw attempts. Joe also had five assists against two turnovers and a couple scrappy steals.
  • Tracy McGrady looked a little livelier while getting to the free-throw line early. But Corey Maggette really took it to him at the other end and McGrady had to start fouling. McGrady also didn’t make a shot in three attempts and failed to record an assist in 14 minutes.
  • It wasn’t a good camp for T-Mac. The Hawks have to hope he will dial it up when they need him.
  • Vladimir Radmonovic (11 points on five shots) has shown a crafty show-and-go game from the 3-point line. He will drive to the basket and then look to pass or draw a foul. A couple of his four turnovers were a result of him zigging while his teammates zagged.
  • “It’s going to take some time, especially with this short preseason,” Radmanovic said. “I have to learn some things on the run. I feel pretty comfortable with the system. It’s just a matter of figuring out some spots on the floor where I’m going to be open or make my teammates open.”

Last I checked we were at 69.7m, with Sy, Benson, and Rolle’s contract, but before Pargo and Green. Vets will count between $800-900,000.00 towards the tax. on minimum contracts. Other guys between $400-500,000.00. But Sy and Rolle had 788,000.00 contracts, a little more than the Sloan, Ivan Johnson’s of the world. So you cut Sy and Rolle, you have a payroll with Pargo and Green at about 69.9 mill.

Room for 1 rookie besides Benson before the Luxury Tax, or right at it – would it be Sloan or Ivan? Or would ASG pocket the cash and not get anyone else? Or go into Luxury Tax for Stack? Interesting

Was at the game tonight. Debuted our new seats, first row of Section 212. Seats are great!

I have to think Ivan Johnson made the team tonight. He was fun to watch. I also think he looks like a bada$$. The Hawks need someone like that.

Also, might have to take back what I said yesterday about Pargo. I actually thought he played well tonight. For someone who just joined the team, he jumped right in and took control. He handles the ball well and thinks pass first. He might be a good pickup, after all.

Johnson, Pargo, and whoever else makes the final roster are all going to have to play. The schedule is just brutal. All guys wearing a uniform have to contribute. So, Hawks can’t waste any spots.

Hate saying this….Stackhouse probably has to go. I am a big fan of his. Have always liked his game. But, unless he can bring back the ‘01 Jerry Stackhouse, he’s probably going back to his hoops show on XM Radio.

Rev I think Rad has played better than I remember. He’s aggressive on defense and has attacking the basket. (he shot as many free throws as JJ) He had several turnovers but they were just miss communication opposed to poor play. I give him a B- though, because he’s missed several open 3’s badly and he was brought here to make those shots. (2 of 6 doesn’t cut it, even though its a lot better than Joe’s 0 of 7!!)

Say what you want about Pargo…but for someone who just join team…Dude more than held his own. The thing I like is he didn’t force up a lot of bad shots…once he gets more comfortable running the offense…he will able to score too.

Neither Benson nor Rolle help their cause tonight…sometimes it just bad timing…Ivan Johnson was clearly superior to those two guys.

I know Rolle is playing with an injury…and Benson is just giving up too much weight…it just wasn’t their time.

I would like to see us send Benson and Rolle to Dleague…even if means cutting SY.

BUDDY GRIZZARD-Give the Bogans campaign a rest. If you were paying attention, you’d know we just signed Willie Green, which eliminated any chance of us signing Bogans. Besides, common sense should tell you there’s no way the ASG would go into luxury tax territory for a one dimensional player like Bogans.

It looks like Teague will be ready to go Tuesday. Our roster will likely be:

PG-Teague/Pargo
SG-JJ/Green
SF-Marvin/TMac
PF-Josh/Radmanovic/Rolle
OC-Horford/Zaza/Collins

Rolle has more size and experience than Johnson, but I see Johnson making the inactive roster along with Sloan.

Just another way that the Hinrich trade hurt our team. It killed our youth movement.

Jeff, Marvin, Josh, Al, Jordan, and the 1st would have all been younger players.

Instead we cut Jordan and the 1st out of the equation for older players with no upside.

I am no so down on this team as I was a week ago because we have 11 players out of that 13 that have played vital roles on winning teams before. Some are past there primes but they don’t have to give us prime performances just good enough. Remains to be seen if they can do that I am willing to give it a chance. Still need a Center to take that next step, but we have some pieces to go after Kaman, Okafor, Dalembert, or Biedrins. I am okay with letting things play out and see if we can get one of those guys for a bargain trade.

When it all comes together, the bench will look nice. VladRad looked like he will fit in good and be productive playing with Zaza. TMac doesn’t seem into it. Hopefully he will turn it up when it matters. If we keep Ivan, he would bring energy and tenacity and would only have to play maybe 10 minutes. Willie Green can perform. Pargo can perform. And Kirk is in the waiting.

Jamal who? Instead of a 1-man bench, it could be a solid 5-6 man bench.

I really believe that once the bench gets to a comfort zone with one another, the Hawks will be a team that can get over that hump.

Simply put, without Ivan (the terrible) Johnson , the Hawks don’t win this game. He is a nice compliment to Josh Smith. This Guy is a keeper plus he’s cheap.

Sloan and Benson also have potential with more seasoning and they are also cheap. Since most of these additional players come with non guaranteed contracts, the Hawks should just keep the best and cut back before taxes time.

82 game starter for the team with the best record in the NBA. Did you watch the Hawks-Bulls series? What did Joe Johnson do after Game 1? I understand the guy has limitations but wait until the Hawks play the Bulls and watch Rip try to D Joe Johnson. I just hope Bogans doesn’t end up on the Heat.

Benson is NOT there yet but if the hawks could develop him, he has potential to be a legitimate big. He needs to get some bulk on him. I dont think the Hawks have a real direction with Sy. Do the want him at the point, do they want him at the 2. Not really a point guard IMO and no room at the 2. Dleauge for him i would assume. Magnum Rolle is not very good. He only seems interested in shooting a mid range turn around and not on any defense.

START IVAN JOHNSON!!!!!!

Start him at SF NOOOOOW!!!!

I’M CONVINCED!!!

NO MATTER WHAT, even if you have to let go of someone, SIGN IVAN JOHNSON!! I would START HIM if I was the coach personally, or at least put him in the rotation. He’s like BIG BABY DAVIS!!! WHAT A FIND!! He’s EXACTLY what the Hawks needed. SCREW the feeling out process!! I’ve seen MORE MORE MORE than enough!

I like our bench this year. I’m not too salty about losing Jamal, once our bench gets more comfortable the scoring will come. WE HAVE DEFENSE, EVERYONE can defend now. EVERYONE can rebound now! EVERYONE can score!!

Keep Benson or Rolle as a backup. They are both pathetic, but we need extra bodies.
Keep Sloan over Wannamaker as an insurance backup. Sloan CAN’T GET AROUND SCREENS AT ALL, but he’s pretty quick and makes good decisions.

STACKHOUSE HASN’T MADE ONE JUMPER!! He was on NBAtv last year, he’s borderline retired!! LET HIM GO, we have Green, Mcgrady, and SY to back up Joe.

I think McGrady looked good tonight, he needs his legs on his jumpshot though. I love Radmanovic! He’s quicker than I thought, has decent defense, and GOOD VETERAN INSTINCTS! We get 3 point specialist with NO GLARING WEAKNESSES OR LIABILITIES!

Guys, forget Keith Bogans. Willie Green is as good as him, or a slight upgrade. Sure Bogans looked good in the playoffs, HE TOUGH, but he is NOT the solution to any of our problems that can’t so solved by Green, Sy, or T-MAC.

WE ARE SET as far as I’m concerned at the 1-4 positions. Hopefully we can get the CENTER we’ve been needing FOREVER next season. I’m not worried about Joe, shots didn’t fall. But I will say that he needs his 3 point shot to GO DOWN if he’s thinking of scoring 21 ppg again. LOOK. 3pt% DOWN last season = 18 ppg. ONE more 3 pointer a game = 20 to 22 ppg.

Go……HAWKS!!

LEAVE JOSH SMITH ALONE!! (Chris Croker voice). He needs to take SOME jumpshots! He MUST develop a mid-range game. It is essential, it is imperative, and you naysayers are impeding his development. Garnett takes mid-rangers, Gasol does, Lopez, etc. He’s back off taking a lot of jumpshots, but take he can still stick to in rhythm jumpshots.
That being said, I have no idea why his post jumpshot is so TERRIBLE! When he turns around and shoots that little 5 – 10 foot jumper, it’s so wild. Other than that, if he stays in the post, I wouldn’t be surprised if he LEAD THE TEAM IN SCORING

Ivan Johnson could be a diamond in the rough. Legit NBA body and put up big numbers in the

Don’t get me wrong I like Sloan, but if it comes down to Sy or Sloan, give me Sy. Sloan is great, but it sounds like he is going to be playing behind Pargo and Teague, and once we get Hinrich back he will be a fourth PG. Also while he is efficient with the ball, he is a pretty terrible defender. With Sy he can be a SF, SG, or possibly PG if the injury plaque hits us there. Right now two PGs will do until we get Hinrich back into the lineup. Order of players I would like to keep (assuming Pargo and Green make roster): Ivan (intensity), Benson (potential), Sy (potential), Rolle (like to see him when he’s in shape and not hurt), Sloan (great ast/to ratio), Stackhouse (veteran advise and leadership), Wanamaker (great defense, liability on offense).

Having seen him play two exhibition games at low-NBA level, it seems that Ivan has improved on his worst area, as reported on draftexpress: D

He had 3 steals yesterday showing that middling NBA talent will have trouble putting the ball on the floor around him.

Obviously, he will be over-matched by superior talent and bigger players but this is the type of guy which we know will bring his A game every single day whenever he gets the call up for a 3 minute stint or for a 10 minute one.

If we cut this man, we will be doing an horrible mistake and showing the wrong type of the example to the locker-room:

instead of “hard work is rewarded with opportunities” it will state “hard work means nothing, only the pecking order stands”.

More on Ivan “the Terrible” Johnson:

“Perhaps no former Duck is having a more impressive season than Ivan Johnson, the temperamental 6-foot-8 power forward who played a single season for Oregon (2005-06) before coach Ernie Kent did not renew his scholarship, citing the distraction caused by Johnson’s disciplinary issues, mostly related to anger management.

Johnson finished his collegiate career at Division II Cal State-San Bernardino in 2007 and then played for two NBA D-League teams before playing in South Korea. However, once again, anger-management issues got the best of him — Johnson was suspended, fined, and banned for life from the Korean Basketball League last April for making an obscene gesture at a referee.

It wasn’t a first offense, the Korean Times reported. “Taking action against Johnson was inevitable since he had a record of frequent misconducts in the past,” a KBL official told the Times.

In November, the Erie BayHawks, the D-League franchise in Erie, Penn., made Johnson the No. 15 pick in the league’s draft. Within the BayHawks’ first nine games, he had five technical fouls and an ejection. But Johnson’s talent is unquestioned; through Sunday, he was the BayHawks’ leading scorer, and the No. 6 scorer in D-League, averaging 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 33 minutes per game.

In 27 games, Johnson has six double-doubles, with 46 points, a franchise record, against the Maine Red Claws in a game in which he was 17-of-22 from the field and 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. Johnson scored 29 and 39 recently in consecutive games against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

His play, if not his deportment, should have him on the NBA radar.”

Basically, with this kind of record, this sad sack franchise will certainly not sign him.

And it’s a shame. It’s about time that we had another enforcer down low.

This guy and Zaza plus a shot-blocker (to compensate the lack of height/reach by both) would make our second team work really well IMO.

Rolle got the last five minutes of the game. Either he was a lock to make the team, or a lock to get cut. My guess is that he was set to make the team, but Ivan Johnson could have just taken his spot. No need for both players.

Watch . . . Sund won’t sign Ivan ( because of payroll constraints ), sending the miniscule loyal fan base into a homicidal rage.

We’re not cutting Pargo or Green, because we do need some PGs ( even though neither are true PGs ). And the Hawks spent a lot of money buying out Sy, so they won’t just throw them by the wayside. Plus, if T-Mac is still sleepwalking, we do need either a defensive backup SG or SF, which Sy will serve as.

PG: Teague – Pargo – Green

G: J. Johnson – Hinrch – Sy

F: Marvin – McGrady

PF: Smith – Radmanovic

C: Horford – Zaza – Collins

That’s 13 folks. We don’t add a 14th, if it will send us into the Luxury Tax.

Not getting my hopes up for Ivan Johnson to be on the roster. So get ready to cuss out Gearon ( since you’re the face of the ownership group ) if Ivan doesn’t make this team.

Its time to cut the Benson, Sy, Stackhouse, and Wanamaker experiments. These guys are not cut out for the NBA and it shows. Stackhouse is done. If dude is looking for a check or we just need a veteran present, lets sign him as the teams water boy. He can motivate and inspire while passing out water and sweat towels. I would rather run with a roster minimum of 13. That means we would have more money to sign someone else with a little more upside. Just my opinion. Atlanta has to stop penny pinching. I totally agree with Owner Geron, if this does not work this year….it is time to blow the roster. We have to start over, but we need to be smart about it. Lets start over with Teague/Horford and build from there.

Mickael Pietrus, recently released by the Phoenix Suns, is leaning “heavily” towards signing with the Boston Celtics, according to a league source. Pietrus must first clear waivers — that won’t happen until 6 p.m. Saturday — but it’s highly unlikely that any team will want to pick up the $5.3 million he is owed this season. CSNNE.com

Radmanovich has a quality that some people forget Zaza also has, and that goes unnoticed until you pay attention to the nuances of the game – he plays pretty smart. The difference between him and Zaza is shooting range and ball-handling ability. Vlad is better at both. He’s going to help the team whenever he’s in the game for just that reason – smart doesn’t require that you be healthy vs. injured or that you be in a good mood or bad. You can ALWAYS play smart.

Both guys are challenged in the athletic department, but I’ll take a guy who gets his own rebound (Zaza) and at least “gets in the way” on defense over a guy who can run end to end faster than anybody, but doesn’t make the effort. On the flip side of things, Vlad gets steals with his quick hands and long arms, and makes good passes (and shots) from the perimeter.

Both guys will help, and will probably play very well in games together. This could be better than imagined, though not a world-beater combination.

I say we sign Ivan Johnson. He’s like a cross between a poor man’s Brandon Bass and Anthony Mason or something. I’ll take it….

Wannamaker/Sloan – wouldn’t mind seeing Sloan stick with the team but he wouldn’t get any PT. Teague seems ok with his ankle, and Pargo can defend. Plus, Hinrich will return = no place for Sloan. Never was impressed with Wannamakaturnover.

Doc, not to make excuses for Tmack…but it didn’t help Tmack cause for him to have to guard one of the Top scorer on the Bobcats Team…that was just a bad matchup.

I think we will see Tmack value at the end of games…when are trying to close teams out…I didn’t expect him to go all out in the preseason.

Traditionally, the Hawks have fell apart when things got tight at the end of games…Tmack will get some calls from the Refs…JJ never could…he has been in bigger games than JJ ever have…I think that was the biggest reason we signed Tmack…plus it was for the league minimum…I sure Tmack had a couple of other teams interested in his service.

I still think Tmack was a good pickup…now that we have signed two vets at PG and SG…LD will have more flexibility on when to play Tmack. Hopefully, we want see Tmack guarding the opposition’s top scorers in the regular season…THAT”S just asking too much of Tmack…at this point of his career.

If Ivan Johnson is signed, but not added to the active roster, will some of you go overboard bashing Sund and the ASG? Some of you carry on as if you just found out about the ASGs money issues and/or unwillingness to play a luxury tax. The injury to Nets center BLopez should help us get off to a good start. We could be 4-0 before we start that brutal 6gm stretch where we play the Heat and Bulls 4 of those gms.

I believe Sloan will be signed and added to the inactive roster, because he’s already had a dominant stint in the D-league and we need that extra PG in case of injury. Johnson has proven he’s NBA ready, so he won’t be sent to the D-League. I believe Benson will be send down. He doesn’t seem to be intimidated or overwhelmed at this level mentally, but physically is another matter.

Apparently all of his nastiness, shotblocking, and star quality hasn’t done much for the Bucks.

SLB is right on point and Horford is among the worst defending centers period. We are never, going to win a championship with horford our center. And before you use this as an opportunity to go at Josh, This aint about Josh. This is about Horford’s nonchalant defense. He is a very non aggressive defender who prefers to observe than to defend.

I can guarantee that as long as Al is the center or the Power Forward we will never get out of the second round. This aint a personal attack on Al. Its my opinion base on observing his play. Sy is a later bloomer, who can still bloom, but we don’t have time for this type of thing. We need solid contributors.

He is clearly a physically gifted guy but he is too raw: a full year back with Gravellines and a new chance next year is what I would do for him.

I like Benson: his instincts are right in my opinion, even on the plays were Ely scored over him yesterday, his defensive stance was correct: he simply did not have the bulk to keep Ely 1 foot further away from the basket.

His putback on the offensive rebound is something that he repeatedly shows (scrimmage and the two games against CHA). That is good stuff: timing & location for the offensive boards and his blocking skills can/should be developed: keep him.

Ivan is, IMO, essential: I would use him as a power SF on the second line up but not at the same time as V-Rad and Zaza: we need to put a shotblocker in that mix, so I would look to manage Smoove’s minutes to help Ivan and Zaza when they would be doing their thing together.

Ivan only costs $473,000.00 to keep – way cheaper than Rolle and Sy at $788,000.00 each. Good cuts. I had speculated that earlier that was an option.

So we just went from 69.7m approx. in salaries to about 68.1m. Assuming we keep Pargo and Green, we’ll be bac at 69.8 m. Yep, just enough room to sign Ivan if we want, and stay under the Luxury Tax of 70.3 m.

That’s assuming we keep Benson also.

If we cut Benson 473,000 and Ivan, we have enough to sign Stack. I wonder if we’ll do this.

If we cut Benson, we could sign Sloan and Ivan, but not Stackhouse.

Maybe we cut Pargo, that would put salaries at about 69m. Sign Stack and Johnson – Yep that fits. And if we cut Benson, you could keep Sloan also – they have equal salaries basically.

** Subtract Sy and Rolle, and you have 68.325 million ( 10 PLAYERS )

** The question is: how much does adding Pargo and Green cost?

** Then you also talk about adding Ivan Johnson?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but the main issue with the Luxury Tax is being over the tax when the season is OVER, not staying under the tax all year, right? If that is the case, does this mean that the Hawks can sign as many vet minimum guys as they need, as long as the money they paid out isn’t over the luxury tax threshhold?

I’m not quite sure how this works.

I figure that someone on this team is getting cut as soon as Hinrich comes back, so maybe that’s the plan of Sund/ASG. To sign the necessary pieces, then cut people as need be.

Guys, come on now. You can’t really expect an NBA head coach to play more than 10 guys in a competitive game. Maybe 11, but bottom line, I wouldn’t count on Ivan getting meaningful minutes. Players 11-n are there for blowout situations, practices and injuries. With 96 minutes at the forwad slot, I find it hard to see where Ivan carves out time over guys like Josh, Marvin, Al, Joe, TMac and Vlad.

To all my fellow bloggers, be it JeJe, Grand dad, Superior blog man whoever.
First question what makes a championship team?
In my opinion it’s coaching, defense, rebounding, and having a good option doesn’t hurt.
I know we can defend and rebound, the problem is gonna be the coaching in those tight game areas when the margin of defeat or victory is one ,or two buckets down the stretch.
The whole center thing is over blown so please get over it there is only one one top flight center in this league and that’s DH.There is no one you are gonna get that is better,can rival him,out defend,out muscle,or even close.The days of Hakeem,Patrick,David Robinson,Mutumbo,Shaq,Sabonis,Brad Daughtery,Mark Eaton,Moses,Parrish,Laimbeer,Manute Bol,Rik Smits these were all good serviceable big mean is over. So please let’s stop with all the Okafur, Kaman,Bienidris or any other alsorans ,Chandler would a been a nice pick up but we have a DH stopper and the rest of these centers are ineffective offensively.In other words if you are not gonna make a play for the best why make a play at all? It’s just change for the sake of change which is never good {look at the bibby trade,true bibby was under performing and a handicap but we had his replacement on the roster and gave away a good player and draft pick for the sake of change when all we had to do was play the guys we had. that falls back on the coaching and management}
I’m not a fan of a big name players like you guys,i’ll rather have a performer someone with heart who will compete and leave it out there. Josh plays like that when his heads in the game,i see glimpse of it in Teague and the Ivan guy is a keeper dude a stud we need to retain his services.
I know the NBA it’s a star driven league more than anything else, which is wrong to my eyes but that’s how it’s always been. But I honestly when you look at rosters and what each player can bring to the table how many rosters can you say are actually better top to bottom? Not two many maybe four or five that’s tops{Mia,Dallas,Clips,Ok maybe, everyone else has those one or two stars and a bunch of trash} especially we keep Ivan he brings toughness defense and can score.Ny great starting frontcourt, backcourt atrocious with no depth,Lakers no pg, no bench,no sf, Boston old with no depth now, look ZaZa,Rad,Ivan,Pargo, and a healthy Kirk is a very solid good bench player eff what you heard and if Tmac can give us anything along with willie green and Twin we good.
If marvin can play which he’s been doing since his surgery he even has posture now we can make noise with adequate coaching the majority of you guys just post to post

Northcyde – That is correct about Luxury Tax. It’s calculated after the season. But the real date is Feb. 10th. That’s when contracts like Pargo and Green become fully guaranteed. That’s why we waived Damien last season, then signed him to a couple of 10 day contracts.

I’m disappointed but not surprised that they waived Pape. Rolle and Wannamaker were pretty obvious cuts because their counterparts out-performed them. northcyde…my understanding is that its salaries paid out at the end of the year. so Pargo, who is on a non-guaranteed deal, could still get cut before February, and the Hawks wouldn’t be on the hook for the second half of his contract. not sure if Green’s deal is fully guaranteed or not.

Astro,

“I find it hard to see where Ivan carves out time over guys like Josh, Marvin, Al, Joe, TMac and Vlad.”

1. With the condensed schedule, all teams will need to deploy more players.
2. Match ups – V-Rad is soft a mistake prone: sometimes you need an enforcer to keep people motivated.

Ivan Johnson is not the second coming of Bass, or Anthony Mason, but he is a tough guy WITH SOME SKILL, which means that every now and then you can bring his body into the game and you can trust him not to dribble the rock on his foot or to shy away from a physical guy like Taj Gibson.

Ivan’s physical characteristics (size, wingspan, jumping ability) make him a fringe NBA player, however, there are situation in which this type of player is essential.

MC said on twitter that the chances that Ivan stays are “slim, since it is not a position of need”.

That’s a load of bull: it’s not the issue of him being a PF and that position is covered, its the fact that we are not 100% covered in one of the most important positions of need: “BASS ASS ENFORCER DOWN LOW”.

The only aggressive guy we have is Zaza and keeping this guy would not hurt us at all. Heck, he even decked Teague with a (legal) pick during the scrimmage.

That’s the type of guy that will keep our guys properly focused on how to feel and behave on the court.

This guy was banned from the Korean BB League!!! That’s the type of guy we desperately need, that is our most weak “position of need”.

@Hummmmer

Somebody check the IP addresses.

People are complaining about a real center. Spyro says Bucks would never give us one and Leuer for Horford + pick.

Strickland comes in here talking about forests and trees and bragging that Kurt Thomas and Gadzuric took Horford to 7 games, smdh at bringing THAT up. Who was it that said Kurt Thomas punked Horford?

Horford has stopped improving, period. Not a dominant big man. Not a dominant scorer.

If I or Spyro have to choose role players Im going for 1) Leuer starting at the SF who defends 4s 2) Marvin on the bench and 3) Bogut and Smith at the center and PF who defends 3s. PERIOD.

Smith is more of a center protecting our rim than Horford. Its a flipping joke.

@Michael Cunningham What these fans on here need is an interview with Drew asking how he plans the spacing of the big lineups.

Say, who takes Marvin Williams spot on the offense for spacing. Smith or Horford or Jason Collins

Laugh your @ss off indeed. I’ve seen championship teams, this 4 year make the playoffs and bust in the 2nd round experiment is not a contender. Dallas 2011, Smith + Bogut, Garnett + Perkins, hang their hat on defense and easy rebounding.

What do these Hawks hang their hat on? Making the Coach’s all Star bench?

Green – $854,000.00

Stackhouse – $854,000.00

Ivan Johnson – $473,000.00

Great draft picks the past two yrs Hawks. One down & the other won’t make the team either. Why bother drafting these 2nd round guys, hyping them up to the media (this pick has so much upside) and then leaving them on the bench or cutting them. And once again, no 1st round pick this yr. Can you say “take another step down in the playoff seedings or even no playoffs”. In my opionion, the ASG deserves everything they get because of what the did with the Thrashers.

I can picture Al right now. “My obvious position is the 4 and I think Blake is Okay with the 3. We need help.” lol.
No, you trade Horford for a center and ideally another player who can be a perimeter decoy like Jamal yet defend the 4 position. Smith at the 3 defensively and with the Perimeter 4 he can operate inside offensively.

Bucks can rebuild with Horford and a pick.

Slimjr has been recommending DeAndre Jordan as a clear upgrade and a true and most of all “WILLING,” center to take the hawks past the second round. This guy is a beast with leaps off the planet. Al Thornton* -12mpg
MW – 12mpg
Benson – 12mpg

guard: McGrady: 12mpg= 4 ppg
wing: Al Thornton*: 12mpg= 4.5 ppg
wing: MW: 12mpg= 4.5 ppg

No one hangs their hat on defensively erasing mistakes except Josh. Well guess what he’s too small and he cant shoot on offense. Yet your alternative is Marvin or Iso Al.
you Get the big center (via Bogut), you get the big shooter (via Leuer). You get a big SF (via Smith), you get the big bench (via Marvin) and flexible contracts.

Give Bucks TWO 2nd rounders or a protected first along with Horford I dont care. Just get it done.
