Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 12

Here’s what Larry Drew had to say today about Jannero Pargo, who was officially signed and immediately designated the backup to Jeff Teague:

“Very similar to Jeff, he’s a point guard who can score. But the experience itself is very valuable.”

In my assessment of Pargo last night, I didn’t note that he does have a pretty good scoring rate. In fact, his per-36 minute scoring averages over the last five seasons are comparable to what Jamal Crawford provided last season.

And in the context of the Hawks, Pargo’s experience is valuable. It was not feasible to start the season with one of Pape Sy, Donald Sloan or Brad Wanamaker as the backup point guard, especially since the schedule is so demanding. So adding a veteran, even a marginal one, provides some stability for the Hawks.

But if the goal was to add some scoring punch to the bench on the cheap, the Hawks got a scorer who is less efficient than Jamal because he doesn’t shoot as well and doesn’t get to the line as often. As John Hollinger wrote in his assessment of Pargo (Insider): “He can be useful if a team is desperate enough for shot creating that it doesn’t really care so much about the accuracy of said shots.”

Pargo’s career turnover and assist rates are also lower than Jamal’s. Pargo does represent an upgrade defensively and is a better rebounder (even at his size) but that was going to happen with most replacements. I guess Pargo can help with Drew’s plan to be a more energetic defensive team but he’s too small to play the two on any kind of regular basis.

In any event, we’ll see what Pargo can do on this team. He sounded enthusiastic about getting his next chance with a good squad.

Kirk [Hinrich] is out so you need somebody that can come in and spell Teague a few minutes here and there and help that second unit not drop off as much from the starters,” he said. “I think I’m a guy that can come in and provide energy, defensive effort and hopefully help win some games.”

Pargo said his experience should help him quickly learn Atlanta’s offensive and defensive systems. He got a crash course on the offense today and so far likes what he sees: “Great stuff. A lot of passing, moving, cutting, backdoor. I think it’s a great offense so hopefully I learn it pretty quickly and get acclimated here.”

Camp report

  • Drew’s assessment of last night’s game after breaking down the video: “I thought there were some pretty good things but I also thought we reverted back to some old habits. We have got to be a little more focused if we are trying to do some things different defensively. We have to understand exactly what we are trying to accomplish. As I told the team before the first practice, I don’t want to be a team that sits back and lets the other team do what they want to do. I want to create havoc. In order to do that you have to have everyone on the same page.”
  • Charlotte got a lot of clean looks from the 3-point line last night, even when the Hawks had starters on the floor. “The concern was the effort to get the 3-point shooters,” Drew said. “As I told the guys, we have to exert our energy from the start of the shot clock till the end. It’s going to take multiple efforts. There were possessions where that didn’t happen and as a result Charlotte got some open looks.”
  • Drew said the Hawks have been better with closing out during drills: “I’ve seen guys come from one corner to the other corner. Last night, a guy at the elbow just watched the guy. It has to become habit-forming. When playing against a team that is a 3-point shooting team, you have to be on your horse. You have to be committed to taking that extra step.”
  • Hinrich participated in a 3-point shooting drill with Pargo and was making them at a high clip. He said he still lacks strength and full range of motion in the shoulder.
  • My fantasy basketball team name: Pick-and-Pape Sy.

You conveniently forget about Wade which is, IMO, by far the best player in MIA… :-D

Lebron is veeeeeery good, but only until the going gets tough. Then, he folds, time after time after time.

MIA must become – again – Wade’s team.

I saw recently the Finals’ mini movies and it was always Lebron talking in the huddle and before and after games.

Wade was sitting back waiting for the disaster to happen so he can regain full control over that team.

When that happens, and Lebron becomes his formal (factually he already is) side-kick, they will have a much better chance at wining it all.

“I like your list but i cant see boston keeping it up at a high level.. To old and no bench.. Compressed schedule hurts them too. 3 players on that team will be retiring in the next 3 years.. I dont think the legs can hold up but they are a 6 seed in my book”

A famous writer through his character once said, ” the rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated”

The energy Boston needs come from the guard spot. Boston is a master of the half court game and the set shot. Those are some of the tools that get you into the late rounds of the playoffs. The level of knowledge and skill will keep Boston in the hunt. I might be more inclined to agree that Boston is vulnerable in the playoffs, but I think they are just too smart and talented not to win games at a good clip. Doc Rivers is the wild card that keeps them in the hunt.

NO? AKA a troll who refuses to use his real LOL moniker.

Howard has been open that he wants to compete for the championship. Hes voiced that he wants out of Orlando to do that. A trade appears imminent. In the summer he made 2 more commercials with Josh, bringing the total to 5 commercial in which there is a Josh and Howard connection. They are both natives of the ATL.

Howard has made it clear that he wants to compete and the first name mentioned on his short list is Josh. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Can you prove that he hast said he wont come to Atlanta?

Don’t be weak and naive to think that a players every desire or opinion is spelled out in the press. (I’m not talking about you ken Strickland)

cmon, man…One thing I will agree with you on…the Knicks usually play the Hawks well, especially here in ATL.
Now, the Knicks are built inside-out and with the exception of Orlando, the rest of the conference is outside-in. I think the majority of the conference has it right, but the Knicks could sneak into a playoff HC advantage for one series. I’m impressed with how the Knicks wrangled to get Chandler, but they will miss Chauncey.

@Dukester

The Hawks problems are mental and coaching(IMHO) and not physical. Josh is a bad decision maker(mental), not a bad teammate. Josh is also a great teammate with a good work ethic and a great shot blocker.

Marvin is soft(Mental), but BIG ,ATHLETIC and a great teammate .

Kirk and Zaza are the only TOUGH minded WARRIORS we have on this team, that have proven they can contribute.

Dalembert is not a TOUGH minded WARRIOR…He is a 7ft , shot blocker, who is LAZY with a BAD ATTITUDE…I will have to pass at 7mil.

RUFUS1-I guess that report clears up any doubts about why the 76ers got rid on him, why the Kings couldn’t give him away, why they ended up letting him walk, and why he’s still available. He certainly wouldn’t start ahead of Horford, and I’ll bet he’d make an issue of that. Have any of you Knick lovers taken a look at their roster, besides Carmelo, Amare and Tyson? It’s a joke.

Bibby should be deciding whether he should choose Medicare part B, and BDavis hasn’t bothered to lose weight or get in shape for a normal regular season in over 2yrs. Does anyone know anything about their backup center, or even heard of him? Some of the same NEGATIVE MINDED INDIVIDUALS who keep making an issue of the Hawks bench, seem to conveniently omit any mention or knowledge of the Knicks almost nonexistent bench when rating them as high as a potential #2 seed.

Chandler is going to have his hands full, and them some, trying to cover for Bibby and Byron. Let’s face it, these 2 were DEF liabilities even when they were in their prime. Other than TChandler, I Believe PG TDouglas might be the only other player on that entire roster than can come close to impersonating someone playing DEF. Amare will block a shot or 2 here and there, but that’s about it when it comes to his DEF.

And Carmelo, PULEEASE. But according to some of our bloggers, these 2 stars, plus TChandler, are going to single handedly overcome this yrs schedule, a nonexistent bench, NO DEF, and every other Eastern Conference team except the Heat. Talk about believing ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GOLD. I could be putting too much weight on our improved perimeter DEF, but I just can’t overlook how well we did with MBibby playing major mins as our starting PG, even though he was both an OFF and DEF liability.

Truth, if there is an INKLING that you can consider bringing in D12, give them what they ask for and make it happen quick. To deal him to a division foe would be unheard of, because first of all Sund wouldn’t even give an offer worthy enough, and 2nd, Orlando isn’t doing that for ATL…he is going to be moved out of the ECF is anywhere. The Lakers are far from out of this one. They do not like getting trumped in their own city, which is very rare.

@Kevin M You are on the money sir with the “built inside out comment” Its so amazing how many people on this blog and in ASG dont understand that concept. It wins rings!!! Only 1 team has been able to win without that philosphy!! The pistons and we are set up the same way they were without the players.
Folks its over we must change this philosphy we have. Some here ask why I suggest Sam Dalembert its not that I like him. Id rather had Chandler, Nene in that order. But players like that dont fall out the sky you have to over pay for them!! See Kwame Brown. Bloggers keep saying Dalembert is noth worth 7 mil, folks thats minimum wage for 7ft rebounding shot blocking centers there is no other way around it. Of course thats too much for the per se. But gas is too high for the quality of it today also but we are still buying that water!! Funny part is some bloggers are starting to sound like Sund saying not to give up on over paid core players who are not worth the money. But right now the hawks need to give up whatever they can to get 10-12 boards a night. And Al Horford has already said he is not doing it.

Dwight has been on record saying that he loves the city of Orlando and would love to remain there. The Magic can even offer him the most money and an extra year. In addition, he seems like he is a loyal guy and the Magic are entrenched in the playoffs with him.

However, Howard wants them to pick up more contending pieces, and with the players on the roster currently, it seems unlikely that they pull off a blockbuster for a player like Monta Ellis or Josh Smith. Dwight wants to play in Orlando, but he wants to be on an elite team in Orlando.

People are simply going overboard with Chandler’s influence.

Yes, he is very good, but his effects were marked in a TEAM and the NYK are not a team, they are two “me-first” volume shooters and little else.

These guys will not work harder on D because they have Chandler, they will work LESS.

The Knicks will start ± 8-12 for their first 20 games and then the finger pointing will start.

As good as Chandler is (defensively), the question is how many fouls will hge have to commit when the perimeter guys get beat, and he has to cover for them?

As for the Knicks, they have very good individual players, but I’m not sold on their team. They have no depth (plus D’Antoni likes to run), Amare is one hard foul away from a knee injury, and they make no effort to play defense.

Maybe Mike Woodson can get the players to buy in on defense, and Toney Douglas and Tyson Chandler are not that bad. But until I see it, I won’t believe it.

I dont think Knicks will be pass the Hawks this year. I see them competing for the 5-6 seed.

In reagrds to Dalembert and him wanting 8 mil for a year, heck Kwame Brown signed for 7 mil with GS and he is nowwhere as good as Dalembert. Look at the centers around the league and there is less than 10 that are legit centers in this league. Daly is a legit 7-0 and averages around 8/8/2. Plug his size and athletic ability into the Hawks lineup and you have a major team upgrade.

But the bottom line is the Hawks are not gonna go over the cap for anyone except D12, they already proved that with Chris Paul.

The schedule is just weird this year….we only see the Knicks in Philips and we have a 2-1 advantage versus Boston out of the gate. Plus, we see neither until March!

What was our record last year in back-2-backs? Did we ever win both? If I counted right, we have 17 back-2-backs and 1 trifecta.

Pending injuries to the Hawks, I see the Hawks as a clear 3 seed. (This could change depending on player movement, in particular Dwight.)

1. Bulls (solid starting five, good bench, great coaching)
2. Heat (LeBron, Wade, Bosh, plus an improved support cast)
3. Hawks (maybe the most rounded starting five in the East, lack bench, superstar, and coaching)
4. New York (Chandler will help improve already good team; lack depth, even w/ Chandler may not be strong enough defensively)

I don’t really think 5-8 really matter. Top 4 could change depending major trades or major injuries.

It’s crazy to bypass the idea of Howard going to the Nets and it not catapulting the Nets to another level altogether.

You put a great PG with a great C, and what do you suppose will happen? Yes, the Nets would give up a lot in exchange. But they’d have then addressed the two most important positions on the floor, with a superstar and a guy who might be a superstar (Deron Williams). The rest is filler, and those spots are ALL easier to fill (SF, PF, SG).

Not only that, but the Nets have a GOOD head coach.

Such a transaction might make things a tad easier for us in the southeastern conference (we still have Miami to deal with), but not in the EC overall.

I think it has nothing to do with what Sund would rather do, and everything to do with what Gearon would rather do, and their constant evaluation of the value of this team, which despite what Gearon says, they will sell at the first solid opportunity. After a buyout of reportedly $1.5 million, half of which was reportedly covered by the New Orleans Hornets, the Hornets have signed Mexican center Gustavo Ayon, the player said in a press conference in Spain on Wednesday and sources later confirmed..

And the Hornets dont even have a buyer. I’m impressed by their decision (although I have no idea what kind of player the guy is) to spend that money. He is listed at 6′10, 245 lbs.

Anyone questioning what Dalembert could have done for this team is a fool. Go look at his rebounding rates as a starter and look at Zaza’s and you will see the clear difference. When Zaza has started for the most part during a season his rebounding rates have suffered because he isn’t a starter. Daly on the other hand continues to strive. Put him and Horford together and if Horford maintained his rebounding rate along with Josh we would have the beast frontline. Zaza is a overpaid backup with a stinking attitude himself. Finally, that Hinrich trade continues to hurt this team, we gave up all our depth for a stopgap. One of the worse trades in Hawk history. I would much rather have Bibby backing up Teague, much rather have Jordan and whoever we would have took in the 1st round coming off the bench. Much rather have Mo Evans as a minimum player than Stackhouse and maybe even T-Mac at this point. Sund and the ASG are horrible and most of you posters don’t have a clue

Listen to Rufus1 on here, you put a nice bow on that truth re: Dalembert. I saw where Samuel was openly complaining to the media about no playing time. Between his incessant non-stop whining and Cousins’s “tude”. Their head coach was having migraines.

The knock on him in Philly was that he was a cancerous whiner in that locker room as well. Extremely lazy and in the Summers, Samuel refused to bend over and pick up a basketball to work on his offense. An all around headache, IMHO. I did extensive research on this guy two years ago.

I guess we will go to war with what we got, once again. An ECF appearance is about the most I will expect from my Hawks this season. That would be an improvement.

Hollinger projects Hawks to finish 33-33, 9th in the East. Says they miss the playoffs by a game. Here’s the insider writeup:

“The Hawks won 44 games and made the second round of the playoffs in 2010-11, but that’s misleading. They gave up more points than they scored in the regular season, went 10-17 after the All-Star break, lost one of the top sixth men in free agency and didn’t do much to replace him, and will be without Kirk Hinrich for nearly half the season.

Pressed face-first against the luxury tax thanks to the bad contracts they lavished on Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams, the Hawks were left to fill in around the edges with veteran retreads such as Tracy McGrady and Vladimir Radmanovic. These weren’t bad pickups for the price, but they don’t offset losing Crawford and Hinrich.

On the plus side, Jeff Teague takes over at the point after breaking out as a slashing, scoring guard in last season’s playoffs, and Al Horford (25) and Josh Smith (26) provide a solid foundation as a frontcourt. Smith, however, is frustrated and spent the offseason angling for a trade.

Atlanta’s bench looms as a major weakness; past editions of this team weren’t deep, either, but Crawford and Zaza Pachulia often gave them an advantage against opposing second units. I can’t see that happening with the current group, especially with McGrady likely to be the backup point guard until Hinrich returns. (Pape Sy, who has been talked up for this spot, has no chance of keeping it beyond the second quarter of the first game.)

As a result, this is going to be a harder slog for the Hawks than they might think, especially with a schedule that does a short-benched team few favors. Unless they’re blessed with outstanding health, they’re in danger of falling out of the playoffs entirely. After three straight trips to the second round, that’s going to be a jolt. “

Big Ray, oh to have the talent you have for putting things in perspective…..good stuff.
IMO, Sund can say they moved Josh because they had an opportunity to move a roster position that was costing the franchise and he couldn’t turn down that offer for what he’ll term ‘cap flex’.
I do understand Gearon is the linchpin, and nothing he says or stands for even makes me flinch in his favor. It is Sund that does the negotiating in these trade deals, and hopefully he has more say than Dell Demps, haha.
I will say that there is no way Joe or Al would be moved to anyone no matter the offer. These guys are untouchable and are held higher than any other Hawk. While Josh and Jeff fill roles that make this team go, its Al and Joe who get credit for being ‘consistent’.
Josh might be moved if Otis could come up with a sweet enough alternative. I would ask for any production I could get from the remaining roster.

I will be watching Gabe Pruitt and Daniel Orton in tonight’s game looking to see if they have anything to offer a rotation. It looks like the Magic will be trying to use Anderson and rook Justin Harper in the Rahaad Lewis role of knocking down 3 pointers.
