Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 12

Here’s what Larry Drew had to say today about Jannero Pargo, who was officially signed and immediately designated the backup to Jeff Teague:

“Very similar to Jeff, he’s a point guard who can score. But the experience itself is very valuable.”

In my assessment of Pargo last night, I didn’t note that he does have a pretty good scoring rate. In fact, his per-36 minute scoring averages over the last five seasons are comparable to what Jamal Crawford provided last season.

And in the context of the Hawks, Pargo’s experience is valuable. It was not feasible to start the season with one of Pape Sy, Donald Sloan or Brad Wanamaker as the backup point guard, especially since the schedule is so demanding. So adding a veteran, even a marginal one, provides some stability for the Hawks.

But if the goal was to add some scoring punch to the bench on the cheap, the Hawks got a scorer who is less efficient than Jamal because he doesn’t shoot as well and doesn’t get to the line as often. As John Hollinger wrote in his assessment of Pargo (Insider): “He can be useful if a team is desperate enough for shot creating that it doesn’t really care so much about the accuracy of said shots.”

Pargo’s career turnover and assist rates are also lower than Jamal’s. Pargo does represent an upgrade defensively and is a better rebounder (even at his size) but that was going to happen with most replacements. I guess Pargo can help with Drew’s plan to be a more energetic defensive team but he’s too small to play the two on any kind of regular basis.

In any event, we’ll see what Pargo can do on this team. He sounded enthusiastic about getting his next chance with a good squad.

Kirk [Hinrich] is out so you need somebody that can come in and spell Teague a few minutes here and there and help that second unit not drop off as much from the starters,” he said. “I think I’m a guy that can come in and provide energy, defensive effort and hopefully help win some games.”

Pargo said his experience should help him quickly learn Atlanta’s offensive and defensive systems. He got a crash course on the offense today and so far likes what he sees: “Great stuff. A lot of passing, moving, cutting, backdoor. I think it’s a great offense so hopefully I learn it pretty quickly and get acclimated here.”

Camp report

  • Drew’s assessment of last night’s game after breaking down the video: “I thought there were some pretty good things but I also thought we reverted back to some old habits. We have got to be a little more focused if we are trying to do some things different defensively. We have to understand exactly what we are trying to accomplish. As I told the team before the first practice, I don’t want to be a team that sits back and lets the other team do what they want to do. I want to create havoc. In order to do that you have to have everyone on the same page.”
  • Charlotte got a lot of clean looks from the 3-point line last night, even when the Hawks had starters on the floor. “The concern was the effort to get the 3-point shooters,” Drew said. “As I told the guys, we have to exert our energy from the start of the shot clock till the end. It’s going to take multiple efforts. There were possessions where that didn’t happen and as a result Charlotte got some open looks.”
  • Drew said the Hawks have been better with closing out during drills: “I’ve seen guys come from one corner to the other corner. Last night, a guy at the elbow just watched the guy. It has to become habit-forming. When playing against a team that is a 3-point shooting team, you have to be on your horse. You have to be committed to taking that extra step.”
  • Hinrich participated in a 3-point shooting drill with Pargo and was making them at a high clip. He said he still lacks strength and full range of motion in the shoulder.
  • My fantasy basketball team name: Pick-and-Pape Sy.

Bogans is still out there and better than T-Mac and Stack. Reggie Evans would have been better than T-Mac for the money, and everyone else on our bench. Dalembert is also better than everyone on our bench and is still out there.

ASG and Sund are sorry. Pay all the tolls you wish. Come up with all the gimmicks you wish, but it will not work. What will work is putting a better product out there. Dalembert would be this teams Tyson Chandler. I hate Sund and the ASG sorry MF’ers.

From the previous blog:

“On the Billups pick-up, were we still down the list before we could claim him? Why pay them anything more than the minimum if they already have their salary promised to them? I saw Rip getting 5M from the Bulls… you would think none of these owners would take on add’l salary when the numbers are already locked in?” – KevinM

Kevin, two completely separate cases here. In the case of Chauncey, he went through two waiver processes. Once the Knicks waived him, any team with cap space could claim him and take on his full $14.2m salary. Obviously nobody wanted to do that, so he cleared normal waivers and was made available for bidding via the amnesty clause.

As for your question of why owners would want to pay Chauncey when he is already gauranteed to receive that money from the Knicks, the answer is because Amnesty players can be an extreme value. The Clippers won the bidding by agreeing to take on $3.5m of his salary. That’s a small price to pay for a one year contract for a former finals MVP originally signed for $14.2m for this season. Teams could bid as low as the veteran’s minimum, but obviously the Clippers thought it was worth it to bid more so that he wouldn’t go to another team. They were likely to lose Eric Gordon and needed another guard that can shoot.

If you look at the Knicks salaries on hoopshype, you can see Chauncey still listed for the remaining $10.7m the Clippers are not paying. This money does not count against the salary cap for the Knicks, but if they were below the 85% cap minimum that teams are now required to spend every year, it would count toward acheiving the minimum.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm

Rip Hamilton is a completely separate case. His agent negotiated a buyout with the Pistons so that he could become an unrestricted free agent rather than be submitted to the amnesty process where he would likely be claimed by a non-contender. He probably agreed to give back to the Pistons roughly what Amnesty bidders were likely to offer for his services. That way, the Pistons get the same savings they would have received through Amnesty without using it (they can save it for another player now), and Rip got to pick the team he wanted to play on.

The Hawks were never in the bidding for Chauncey. We are over the cap so we could not claim him off traditional waivers and were not eligible to make an amnesty bid. Only if he cleared waivers and no team under the cap submitted an Amnesty bid would he then become an unrestricted free agent, in which case the Hawks could offer him a veteran’s minimum deal or the mini mid-level exception.

The Clippers bid on Chauncey despite his agent threatening that he would retire if claimed by a team he did not wish to play for. Chief Gangsta Stern then announced to the media that Chauncey’s agent had been warned that failure to report to the team that claimed him would result in his contract being voided, in which case he would not receive a dime of the $14.2m owed him. Chauncey decided playing for the Clips

If DHoward isn’t traded, this will change.

I find it downright STUPID andfor anyone to try and make an issue of a 5 time Allstar, who’s averaged almost 20PPG in his career, scoring only 6pts in a doggone preseason gm. In fact, LDrew said he would use the gm to evaluate Wanamaker, Sloan and Sy, so it stands to reason that JJ took a back seat to allow them a chance to impress Drew. Of course, that might be too intelligent for some of our HATERS to comprehend. It certainly wouldn’t be the 1st time.

What is the fascination that people have with the Knicks? I don’t get it. Yes, they have two great scorers whom the media would call “superstars”, but what motivates people to think they will all of a sudden become a top 4 team in the East this year and pass teams like Orlando and Atlanta in the process?

Chicago was able to make a meteoric rise to the top last season, but that sort of thing is very rare unless you totally revamp your roster. Also, you have to keep in mind that they have an amazing defensive coordinator in Thibodeau, and it was their defense that allowed them to do so. They also had the league MVP, but moreso than anything, they got it done on the defensive end. New York doesn’t have either of those things. They have volume scorers who can score as much as Rose, but I don’t see that as being enough to propel them to a top 4 seed. Can someone explain to me why they feel like NY is such a threat to the East?

I’d take Jordan Crawford over anything coming off our bench right now…

Real talk.

I’m not annointing this guy as an All-Star caliber gaurd. But honestly, we all had a pretty good idea that Jamal was gonna be off the books this upcoming season, but yet again, this management group’s decision making process is so short-sighted that they neglect to think down the road.

He could’ve helped to replace some of Jamal’s pop off the bench this season. Or, we could’ve used that 1st rounder(if we could ever hit on a draft pick and play the dude) that we gave up for Hinrich to fill a void.

But, we deal a 1st rounder + our 1st rounder from the last draft to get Kirk Hinrich, whose nothing more than another stop-gap solution. Short-sighted. And folks think the Falcons gave away too much for Julio Jones.

At least that move pays off in the long-run.

Yes, they have two great scorers whom the media would call “superstars”, but what motivates people to think they will all of a sudden become a top 4 team in the East this year and pass teams like Orlando and Atlanta in the process?”

a) The addition of Chandler means they are going to be at least average defensively, and with Melo and Amare on the floor they will be able to score against anyone.

b) I really don’t think their back court is as bad as everyone says it is. They don’t have a pure point guard, true, but they are going to be running isolation all the time, so it’s not like they really need a pure distributor to be a good team. Douglas is a good defender and shoots a high percentage from 3, and Fields is a solid role player and one of the best rebounding guards in the league. They could use another shooter to spread the floor, but it’s not like they are starting Royal Ivey in the back court or something. And there is always the wild card of Baron Davis or Mike Bibby showing up in good enough shape to contribute something.

c) Sure, they don’t have depth, but getting past the Heat and Bulls — the two consensus top teams in the conference — who does have depth? The Celtics lost Jeff Green and are basically down to one quality player off the bench. We all know the Hawks’ issues with depth. The Pacers are deep, but they are still young and have something to prove. Orlando is fading and I am not even picking them to make the playoffs, especially if they trade Dwight. New Jersey, with or without a Dwight trade, is lacking in depth across all positions. Milwaukee and Philadelphia could potentially be deep, but we don’t know how good (or how healthy) their starters are going to be.

In a conference where pretty much everyone except Chicago has depth problems, that doesn’t seem like a huge stumbling block to me. The Knicks’ starting five can hang with a lot of East teams and their front court is one of the top 3 in the league. Barring a huge leap forward by Teague surpassing even my expectations, I’d be surprised if the Hawks finished ahead of the Knicks this season.

Bogut- We don’t have the pieces to get him without giving up Teague, Joe, Josh, or Al so I don’t want him.

Tyson Chandler- much respect to the Knicks in finding a creative way to get him that’s what teams that really want to win do, they get what they need.

Dwight- Cool give up the team for him if he will re-sign. I would but not without a promise in writing.

Javal McGee- They are not trading him unless something goes bad wrong this year. He will get paid at the end of this year also as a RFA.

Brendan Haywood-If they go really bad this year they may trade him. He would help and could start at C.

Andris Biedrins- I would love to have him but they would have to take Marvin along with Zaza and send us back a filler. Don’t know if they would be willing.

Andruw Bynum- If we could get him I would love to have him but the fact that he is so injury prone scares me. I would give Josh and Marvin for him though.

Chris Kaman- I am all for sending Zaza, Kirk, and a 2nd rd pick for Kaman. They could take it or leave it because there is a lot of value in that trade for them.

Emeka Okafor- I am all for sending Zaza and Marvin for Okafor then signing Al Thorton off the streets.

Gortat- I am all for sending Marvin, Zaza, and a 2nd to Phoenix for Gortat and Josh Childress.

Samuel Dalembert- I am all for making him a offer. We still have full mid-level exception.

All those players would help this team possibly take the next step not just in my mind but statistically.

ASG and Sund need to manage instead of coming up with silly gimmicks

Nuggets lost 3 of their best players and are still CRAZY deep…I can only hope one day Jeff Teague plays at Ty Lawson level cause that guy is something special for them. Also that rookie Faried is a BEAST, 6 boards 5 offensive in only 15 minutes, and to think we could’ve drafted him had we not made that boneheaded trade AND we’d still have JC2.

“TMac,Radmonavich,Pargo,Benson,Zaza,Sye…….Above average bench i would say.” – I MUS WRITE

Not much above average I would say. After seeing how disinterested T-Mac has looked since he joined the Hawks, I’m starting to doubt he can match his production of a year ago with Detroit. I’ve been screaming all summer for the Hawks to re-sign Damien Wilkins and it now appears the Hawks have made a HUGE mistake by letting him go. Given T-Mac’s injury history, signing both of them would have been a much better idea. For all his offensive limitations, Wilkins is a beast on defense and would have helped continue the shift of defensive philosophy for this Hawks team.

Radmanovic could have some big moments this year. Benson looks legit but won’t make a large impact right away. Sy tantalizes with his potential, but let’s face it… he’s not a good basketball player. Great athlete… bad player. Pargo is an excellent stopgap until Kirk returns. Overall I’d say the bench needs major help and I can’t believe the Clippers just got one of the best rebounders in the game for the vet’s minimum. WE NEED KEITH BOGANS… EVERYBODY SAY IT WITH ME.

Truth B Told

Yes stupid is as stupid does…

Any player who is worth trading for would only want to come here if Josh is here. The only real trade bait we have is Al Horford, who would probably welcome the chance to play full time power forward. Howard has clearly stated that the only way he comes to Atlanta is if his best buddy and co film star Josh is here. So if we were to go after Howard, Al is our trade piece.

Josh puts more fans in the stands that Al, and by the All Star Voting Josh got over 100,000 more votes than Al. Trading Josh makes more unhappy fans than trading Al.

Josh is a constant triple double threat in addition to being the hawks most exciting player. While Al is a serviceable near double double, So is Josh, as are a very large percentage of players in the NBA. Double Double is no big thing when you consider how many players can do that. A bigger matrix is the triple double which is an indication of an absolute assertion, talent and impact. Al is nowhere to be considered on that level.

Trading Josh almost certainly lowers the level of play and competition that the hawks put on the floor night in night out. Trading Al is an easy replacement for what he brings to the table. 12pt career average and 8.8 rebounds.

I vote trade Al while there may be some one outside of the press or a coach’s add on to fill out his roster who thinks the guy is an all star.

Trade Al now because his heart inst into the position he’s being asked to play and we need to keep pace and upgrade that position if we expect to rise in level of play and to get back to the serious contender level we were at 2 years ago.

Trade Al now.

That’s right: Pargo’s career FG% is well below .400!!!!

It’s quite incredible that he has been in the league for so long shooting .388 and without any discernible play making skills.

Last year, we could not find steady minutes for Teague because he allegedly “could not shoot” but this year we will be giving minutes to a guy everyone knows he can’t shoot (better, always shoots, regardless of any consequences, so he takes horrible shots).

I think the season will end like this.

1) Chicago(upgrade Richard Hamilton)
2) Miami
3) Orlando(upgrade Big Baby)( rank 16th off 4th def) they will gel
4) NYK(upgrade Tyson Chandler) rank 2nd off, 28th def
5) Boston(experience/good coaching will propel them)
6) Indiana(upgrade David West 19ppg 8rpg)
7) Milwaukee(upgrade Stephen Jackson/M.Dunleavy)

Note: The hawk’s offense will decline vastly this season unless newcomers can replace JC production. Marvin William is the most improve player from a year ago but JS and JJ still havn’t shown me anything special. I’m getting ready for the draft folks. Here’s what I’m hoping for this offseason. Send JS to Spurs for DeJuan Blair, draft Harrison Barnes, sign Deron Williams and Dwight Howard this offseason. I am not worried about the Knicks.

Yes, they will look impressive at times, but if we ignore all the fizzle, the steak isn’t that good.

I think they will be roughly up to par with us: entertaining product, but not real contenders.

My view on the standings:

1) MIA
2) CHI (it should be close)
3) ORL (if they keep Howard and he is moderately happy)
4) ATL (provided that: Teague manages to post the following # – 12.5ppg, 5apg 3rpg 2stl 1.5to on .450; .330; .850 shooting AND Marvin posts the following # 14ppg 6rpg on .475; .360; .850)
5) IND
6) NYK (I think Chandler and or Amar’e will be injured most of the year)
7) PHI (Collins usually tires his men’s ears after year 1)
8) BOS (I think Rondo will be pissed off and the oldies will suffer with the crammed up schedule)
9) NJN (close, unless they sign Howard, which will make them jump into #3)

vava74, I did say it would be a long shot…….have you seen LAL payroll? If ASG want to make it right with the fans, they will pay the luxury tax.

Buddy,

I think CHI made a HUGE mistake in releasing Bogans HUGE.

And we are making an even BIGGER mistake not signing him. COLOSSAL MISTAKE.

F*CK: Bogans and R. Evans would make our bench rugged and playoff ready and these incompetent pricks have been checking out mummies (Stack and McGrady) and perennial underachievers like V-Rad!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at the Knicks’ depth chart:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/nyk/depthchart

Still missing Baron.

But: Toney, Baron and Bibby are all subpar, each in different areas. Baron is entertaining, but likes to shoot too much – I think he will piss off Amar’e and ‘Melo (and they will piss each other too).

With Baron Chandler will still get his alley hoop dunks, but I think the effect of Chandler will be ‘Melo and Amar’e coasting even more on D (remember, these are “me first” kind of guys, with Amar’e last year making some progress on that front).

One of the Knicks’ best bench players last year is gone across the Hudson (Shawne Williams), now, they have virtually NO ONE to score a single FG (unless Iman pans out as a second coming of Fields and is the rookie surprise too).
