Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread
6:28 pm December 19, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.
Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com
Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.
Notes
- Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
- In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
- Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
- The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
- Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

MC, your overview of Pargo left me less than excited. By signing him, does this mean that the roster is complete? Can they cut him in a week or two if he is not able to outplay any of the rookie pgs? Why didn’t they just invite him to camp and see if he can make the team?

RE: Truth B Known
Horford does not “Suck”. It depends on what you value.
For a team without a superstar or 2 we need elite role players to define an identity. Joe is our offense, he gets double teams. Teague is coming along. Stretch 4 Jon Leuer is Teague and Joe’s outside option.
Inside players are also defensive stalwarts Josh Smith and Bogut. Atlanta would become the number one defensive team in the league. Teague is not a natural point guard but with Joe we don’t need one. Only guys who can break down defenses stretch the defense, and draw fouls/finish high % plays.

Signing Pargo shows you how cheap and clueless the Hawks owner/GM are. I would rather take my chance with one of the rookies. This guy has no defense and no offense, then what is the point in singing him….? I can see if he was a good defender but from what MC posted up he is not.

Joe.Jeff.Smith.Bogut.Leuer I agree, I often color commentary to push buttons. At the end of the day, Horford is a good player who hasnt raised his game to very good. I wish hed own the 5 position and embrace it.
The question I ask is does Drew and crew have any confidence that Teague is the guard of the future or of now for the hawks?
Do you see Teague taking charge and lifting Atlanta higher?

Teague has BOATLOADS of potential. But its all in playmaking. As of now he reminds me of a mini-Iguodala, except Iguodala is a better passer! Maybe a miniature rookie Iguodala.
Unsure of how to draw doubles and make plays. I think he has the Nash-Cp3 ability to use PnRs and dribble circles around the defense drawing multiple defenders.
But idk if he ever reaches that potential on this Horford+Smith team. The ATL Hawks are relying on Marvin Williams and Vlad Radmanovic to bust zones, shoot and slash off the swing pass and collapsed defenses.
Then when we go big and Teague has no shooters except Joe.

I really hope that Pape Sy ends up being a pleasant surprise and a keeper. Physically, he has all the tools be a good NBA player at his position. He also seems to have the aggressiveness to be successful. I just don’t know if he has the skill set or the mental tenacity to be successful yet. I really hope he does though, because I’m tired off all the disappointments at PG over the years. We haven’t had a real PG since Mookie.

To clarify, I’m not saying Drew is doing anything wrong coaching tonight. But, over the course of last season, there were a number of idiotic things that he continued to do over and over again even after seeing that they were leading to poor results. Some examples of this were asking Jamal to play point guard, using poor judgement with managing player fouls in critical situations, and often putting our players in position to play to their weaknesses rather than their strengths.
It’s alright to make mistakes as a rookie, but what really bothers me is that he never seemed to learn from those mistakes, nor did he attempt to correct them when he had similar circumstances in the future. Those types of habits are just as frustrating with a coach as they are with a player, and potentially more harmful when they are coming from the coach.

Joe looks good, Marvin looks better than normal, Josh took a couple of bad shots, Teague needs to finish and distribute a little more but I love his on ball defense, did not see much of Al. Zaza, I like his activity but don’t know about his achievement. Benson looks good on defense but needs to rebound. I still prefer Wanamaker over Sloan but don’t really like either right now. Johnson needs to rebound better but I like his activity level, Pape goes strong to the rack sometimes but is not a PG LD. Vlad is okay at making shots, bench is scary bad overall. Early opinions

Wrong. A person like you sensibly expects him to return to 13-15 ppg, and hopefully about 6 boards per.
But there were some “extremists” last year that were certain he’d be dropping 18+ per game once JC1 was gone.
I don’t even see 15 ppg, to be honest. Is is possible? Yes. Likely? I don’t know. He has to stay healthy to begin with, he has to be given a role in this “motion offense”, he has to embrace it, and he has to raise his aggression level a bit. Simply infusing more shots per game ain’t gonna cut it. Especially if he loses confidence after some missed shots and either stops getting the ball (like teammates did him last season), or he starts passing it away when he’s open.

I thought Wanamaker was better than Sloan until tonite. Don’t care for either. Also, think we got wrong Pargo his younger brother is better than both Sloan and Wanamaker, if he should get cut get him. Don’t like T-Mac nor Stack, but Stack looks better. Keith Bogans currently better than both. Ivan Johnson, I like his activity but he does not rebound well enough, did not see enough of Rolle, this is the second time I am saying Benson is greater and I believe it even more after tonite. The starters all had there moments. Teague looks good on ball defensively, but his outside shot looks suspect and he needs to create for others more, but I think he will be okay. Joe looks good. Marvin looked better than normal. Josh is still Josh looked okay, takes too many bad shots, Al did not rebound but looked decent with his jumpers.

“Really? So it’s ok to not try to rebound at all because it’s preseason, just remember to turn the switch on for the regular season, right?”
What game are you watching? It doesn’t look to me like Horford is “not trying to rebound”. I recall him even drawing a loose ball foul while fighting for a rebound. The point is that most guys who have been around the block already are not going to over-exert themselves in a preseason game. You also have to keep in mind that not everyone is as conditioned as they would regularly be, so you are less likely to see guys expending more energy in these scenarios. Obviously, Horford isn’t strongly pursuing rebounds in this game, and he has looked a bit tired at times, but that means nothing with respect to the regular season. If this was a game that counted or if Horford was a rookie trying to show what he’s got, you might have a legit argument. We already know that Horford can rebound the ball, he leads the team in rebounding every year. That’s practically a given at this point. Looking at stats in one preseason game for a veteran player on a team he’s been on for years isn’t going to tell you much, even when that game has stats that are an anomaly.
By the way, just about every coach in the league will tell you the same thing about preseason games. The main purpose of them, especially this preseason, is to experiment with different lineups, take a look at new players who you may be interested in signing, work on aspects of systems you want to implement for the season, and get your players some conditioning exercise on the court. Go and find me a coach in today’s NBA that says otherwise and quote him on that. Until then, don’t waste my time.
One other thing. There’s another big reason why vets generally don’t go hard in preseason games, that is obviously to avoid injury. You don’t want guys getting hurt over a game that counts for nothing just to make their stats look good or prove that they are “trying”. Go and preach to someone who doesn’t know or hasn’t been there and done that.

The Hawks are really going to miss Jamal. This bench looks like its going to be terrible. What is Flip up to now a days? He would be an upgrade over what I see sitting on the bench now. The two young pg’s trying to make the team did not impress me one bit. Stack is done.. Defensively Teague was on top of his game but he really has to learn to finish better. I think as the season goes on he will so im not worried about Teague at all but man this bench is terrible. Outside of Zaza I have no confidence in anyone else sitting on the pine. Sy could be a solid defender but its clear he is not a pg but rather a sg/sf. The top 6 guys for the Hawks will have to log big minutes this season.

Big Ray,
For the record, I don’t consider sharing my personal knowledge of the NBA to be a waste of my time. When responding becomes a waste of my time, I will stop responding.
I’m aware that everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I respect that. I don’t mind when people disagree. What bothers me is snotty remarks putting someone else’s opinion down without any factual evidence or experience to justify it. You can share your points with whomever you want on whichever blog you want, but don’t try to force them on others or poke fun at / insult the integrity of others’ opinions just because you disagree.
I’m not new to blogging, and I realize that manners are not something you can expect from every blogger, but obviously, when you call out something someone mentions, they are going to retaliate. I can’t say that I refrain from doing that all of the time.

Let me see, what did I see in that preseason game that I’ve never seen before, and therefore cannot be an indicator of what will happen in the regular season?
1) Josh taking long jumpers (and missing), turning the ball over, blocking shots, and rebounding pretty well.
2) Al hitting a very high percentage of his shots, but not getting much done on the glass, or from a scoring standpoint in the post.
3) Teague not making jumpers.
4) Marvin contributing but not making a difference. Yes, it’s possible.
5) Two old vets (one we’ve signed, one we haven’t) looking close two awful on the floor, as in well past their ability to contribute.
6) The Hawks missing nearly all of their three pointers. The Hawks taking a pile of jumpers and missing the majority of them.
7) Larry Drew talking about mixing and matching lineups like it’s a swap meet.
Wait….I have seen all this before. Kinda eery. No, no really. I get it. It’s a preseason game. And we have scrubs on the floor. But ummm….

First of all that courtside reporter i think she does some NBA work for TNT as well. Nice eye candy.
That was about the most exciting thing to take from this game. It is only preseason game but Hawks offense of the bench looks anemic. I do like Benson he can block some shots and is skilled to hit some shots, Sy who is a specialist type of player good defense he reminds me off a keith bogans type. Rolle wasnt that impressed with. Those two guards wannamaker and sloan should be given some money to buy a pack of some black and miles and a Ham sandwich and make like a bad check and bounce

Didn’t want to comment before I watched the entire game:
Good
1) Starters looked a lot faster with Teague in the game, Joe looks ready to go
2) Sy definitely has the speed and physical tools to play (he’s a SG though! Sorry LD)
3) Benson or Rolle will serve the purpose of rebounder/shot-blockers beside Zaza
4) Horford was very steady on Offensive
Bad
1) Stack and Tracy look like guys ready to retire
2) Josh taking bad shots
3) Vladi missed to many open 3s
Overall I liked what I saw out of the starters, Marvin looked a lot better physically and picked his spots. Horford looked a lot more decisive with his moves, immediately jab-stepping and shooting over the shorter Diaw. Jeff didn’t finish all the time, but was still getting to the basket well and his defensive is solid. I think Sy just needs a little more confidence in his jumpshot and he will be very useful off the bench. (nice block on the fastbreak!) I think we will miss Crawford’s offensive some games, but overall we’re a better team defensively without him and Bibby.
If Pargo’s in shape, I think he’s a little better than Sloan and Wannamaker because of his jumpshot. I’m not so down on Sloan and Wannamaker though, Kemba’s a very tough player to handle. Sloan definitely played better than Wannamaker, but they played hard and made some shots.

The only person I like off that bench is Benson, and I only like his potential not what he currently is because he needs to rebound better, if he can get a couple of blocks and rebound better he is a keeper. Sloan and Wanamaker both can kick rocks. T-MAC and Stack both can kick rocks and bring in Bogans please. MC any chance we bring in Bogans? Rolle and Johnson, I prefer Johnson’s activity but don’t care for him either. Pape is not a PG and made some bad turnovers. He had one good play to about 5 bad one’s. Zaza had good activity but needs to finish.

It’s nice that you put the time and have stats to back up your ideas, but I hope you realize that this trade you want and this lineup you preach is never going to happen. At some point, you have to wake up and realize that the Hawks are the Hawks. I don’t understand the point in posting about some hypothetical scenario over and over when you know it will never happen. Bogans greater than T-Mac and Stack and he is out there available for vet minimum
Dalembert would be a great addition to this team and he is just out there to bad had, maybe for full MLE which we have or a sign and trade.
We need a backup PG because none of these guys are going to cut it and Pargo is more of a scorer also.

I hear you on that, Big Ray. I’m tired of seeing the same mistakes over and over too. But, that’s why I bring up coaches. I feel like the right coach could change a lot of the bad habits we’ve seen. I feel like we need a strong-willed no-nonsense type of coach who isn’t afraid to bench anyone on the team if they not following the game plan and refusing to refrain from their bad habits. Unfortunately, I doubt ownership will ever hire someone like that. The best coaches cost way too much anyway, but this is just a hypothetical discussion discussion anyway, assuming things like money are not an issue and we can have anyone we want.

The clock is ticking, but this sorry excuse for ownership and management refuse to address the blunders they’ve made. I would choose Paul Silas of the hornets..
1st of all,he would make everyone play their positions..
He would have josh rebounding and looking for his pg on the break..
He would stop josh from all of the same sh*t he did last year with the outside shots and now the fade aways..
He would have joe acting like a sg and get open for his shots and no more of the holding, holding, holding the ball and then driving or spotting up for a jumper..He would take his shots a lot sooner and score often..
He would put Al at pf like he is supposed to be..
He would get rid of marvin, pachula, josh, and joe for some draft picks and rebuild this team over!!
We’re going nowhere folks..We’re gonna be 7th or 8th seed if we make it too the playoffs..
I will still root for this team but unlike the past 2 years i won’t be lying to my heart..I will honest and tell u all now that,i like the potential of the younger players than the potential of the 4 i named for the trade to lead us into the future..

Re: Jeff.Joe.Marvin.Josh.Al
Its my schtick. Your name should be Joe,Al,Josh and sometimes Jeff. Marvin is an absolute non factor.
You do realize Atlanta is playing 4 on 5 with Marv no matter what?
I want to know the fascination with Marvin and Horford. Or thinking that Josh Smith will bring back ANY talented center.
I’m sorry but as of right now Bogut and Leuer are better than Horford+Marvin/McGrady
until Horford is jettisoned for conventional players Atlanta will continue to suck.

Doesn’t Paul Silas coach the Bobcats, not the Hornets? I’m pretty sure that Monty Williams is the Hornets’ head coach.

I think Stack is done (although I was hoping he had more left in the tank) and I’m not ready to write off TMac yet. I think he’s going to contribute big for the Hawks this season….

Alex,
If you check my posts I have always felt Hawks coaching is an issue. If Hawks had a big time coach, they beat the Bulls in the playoffs I really believe that
northclyde thanks for pointing that out about stephanie i know she looked famaliar.
A bit off topic but in regards to the NBA stars not wanting to come to Atlanta I think someone mentioned some fans havent gotten over Hawks sending Nique for Manning. I think the casual fans for the Hawks will show up when they feel the team has a shot to be one of the elite. You saw that in the playoffs a few years ago against the Celtics and even the Nique years hawks fans might’ve felt they werent going to beat the Pistons in the 80’s or Celtics or Bulls in the 90’s but felt they had a fighting chance. I really think the blowout losses by the Cavs and then the Magic in consecutive years in the playoffs showing no effort turned a lot of the casual Hawks fans off and they have never returned.

No Turnovers for Jeff Teague – Nice
Marvin the best +/- among the starters, and Al with the worst
Benson the best +/- on the night – and 3 blocks. Pendegraft of the scouting dept. does it again. Sund can’t draft, but he finally has a very good evaluator of talent in Pendegraft. Teague, JC2, and now Benson at #19, 27, and 48 – not bad.
We really need Hinrich back quick…

Cute little cat fight side show tonight
Said what big ray said several days ago about stack though I was hopeful to see him ready to contribute. Doubt it.
Funny we had a post man who we tried to make into a point guard several years ago and gave hin away. Also funny to think he will long be remembered in this league than chills will. Irony to all of that.
Overall I haven’t bought into the kol aide but to say we are two prime time players down on a team that struggled down the stretch is a huge worry. I will say it again this team peaked in first half of 2009-2010 and for some reason lost it. Sadly that year the bags didn’t pony up some tax money to get a big for the sretch

Wanamaker and Johnson will probably both get cut before the next game but I don’t think Johnson deserves it, he actually played with more energy and hustle than almost anyone tonite. He is just going to get cut because of the numbers game

People who hate Joe’s contract, just remember he will always be an 18-20ppg player.
Look at Arenas’s and Rashard’s contracts. They both suck b@lls these days, and Arenas will probably be out of the league in less than 2 years

Al continues his evolution into a poor mans Andrea Bargnani and Brooke Lopez. Doesn’t want to play inside much on offense, but doesn’t have the outside game as those guys.
A poor mans Bargnani and Lopez may be where he’s headed…Good for 18 ppg and 6 rpg, with 4 assists and a block a game, and that’s about it.
I know that’s harsh after 1 preseason game, I just want to see him inside more.
And Teague is about what I thought; a good NBA PG, but not great. Can be spectacular in spurts, but that’s about it. Solid.

Sy’s an athlete who can drive and play D – that’s about it. Good wing backup.
I’m concerned we’re just not deep enough to compete in this compressed schedule. Looking over the rosters of other teams, man folks like the Mavs, Thunder, Bulls are deep – even the Heat look deeper than last year.
Cole and Chalmers may not be that good, but with the big 3 they just need adequate at PG to be very good. Hope Curry doesn’t come along to well, or they could be alot more to handle than they already are.
I still think DWade gets hurt in April – he’ll be 30 and still plays his crazy crash the lane game on D and O.

Bench who’ll play some: Sy, ZaZa, Collins, TMac, Pargo if he stays – maybe Benson or Rolle in spots. Until Hinrich comes back.
If LD doesn’t rein in Smoove’s jumper, we may be toast this season. Not getting warm and fuzzies right now, even with JJ looking like his old self.

^So SteveW we’re hoping for injuries to other teams? What a strategy…
NY – Amare
MIA – Wade
IND – D.West
PHI – ??
CHI – Boozer
2 or 3 or all of those teams would beat us regardless. I mean the Bobcats? really.

Usage % = amount of shot attempts and turnovers (possessions used by a player)
Joe.26% Usage
Jeff. 20% Usage
Smith. 20% Usage**
Leuer. 20% Usage
Bogut. 14% Usage**
*Smith would be relegated to offensive boards, dump offs where he can dunk. and Set PnR plays ie where the PG we Stack Joe and a roller on top of each other and Joe curls and hits the roller.
*Maybe this is lowball for Bogut if we feed him in iso. But he would be getting the same things as Smith. Dump offs and offensive boards when we try for 3.
That is a very balanced team.
