Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

“Al Horford with ZERO rebounds. I’m tired of this BS.”

It’s a preseason game. How much do you think these guys really care about this game, especially the vets? It’s not like most vets go hard in a preseason game. Most of them are just trying to get some cardio work in.

I don’t like Josh’s long jumper anymore than I did last season…and apparently IT doesn’t like him any better either. The second try was a drive to the hole…drew the foul…what he should have done the first time.

By the way, who has lead this team in rebounding since he was drafted here?

Enough said.

I think Pape has a future in this league, with the Hawks. He was tenacious tonite and played great. Stack and Tracy so far hasn’t impressed.

Really? So it’s ok to not try to rebound at all because it’s preseason, just remember to turn the switch on for the regular season, right?

By the way, Joe Johson, Marvin Williams, and Josh Smith all missed your memo. So did the Bobcats.

Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I like Sloan more than Wannamaker from what I’ve seen so far. We’ll see.

Both guys on the bubble with Jannero Pargo coming into town. He’s not a bad point, but he’s also more scorer/sniper than pure point.

Kemba is 2 – 9 FG . . but the Charlotte announcer said he shot the ball well?

Big Ray

Buddy ,

Wrong. A person like you sensibly expects him to return to 13-15 ppg, and hopefully about 6 boards per.

But there were some “extremists” last year that were certain he’d be dropping 18+ per game once JC1 was gone.

I don’t even see 15 ppg, to be honest. Is is possible? Yes. Likely? I don’t know. He has to stay healthy to begin with, he has to be given a role in this “motion offense”, he has to embrace it, and he has to raise his aggression level a bit. Simply infusing more shots per game ain’t gonna cut it. Especially if he loses confidence after some missed shots and either stops getting the ball (like teammates did him last season), or he starts passing it away when he’s open.

I thought Wanamaker was better than Sloan until tonite. Don’t care for either. Also, think we got wrong Pargo his younger brother is better than both Sloan and Wanamaker, if he should get cut get him. Don’t like T-Mac nor Stack, but Stack looks better. Keith Bogans currently better than both. Ivan Johnson, I like his activity but he does not rebound well enough, did not see enough of Rolle, this is the second time I am saying Benson is greater and I believe it even more after tonite. The starters all had there moments. Teague looks good on ball defensively, but his outside shot looks suspect and he needs to create for others more, but I think he will be okay. Joe looks good. Marvin looked better than normal. Josh is still Josh looked okay, takes too many bad shots, Al did not rebound but looked decent with his jumpers.

after reading 10 of mc’s camp reports i have to admit some of my cynicism was starting to melt away. consider it back.

this team is a tease. good enough to beat the really bad teams. occasionally good enough to beat an elite team. the end result will be an early playoff exit.

too many players with obvious flaws. broke owners and an apathetic fan base equal one crappy winter. bah humbug!

Buddy,

I’m not saying 15 ppg is an unreasonable expectation, I just feel that there are more related factors in that one simple stat than appear to be on the surface. But hey, I’m open to being convinced that it’s simpler than that…
