Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread
6:28 pm December 19, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.
Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com
Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.
Notes
- Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
- In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
- Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
- The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
- Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

DJ was blowing by everyone until Teague came back into the game in the 2nd qtr. Now DJ has 5 turnovers for the 1st half…. Teague, Josh, Benson and Sy are aggressive on defense.

Teague has got to get his jumper going too. He looks like Bibby on a layup line….Sheesh!

Smith 1 – 4 on his jumpers. He’s always hit the straight away top of the key jumper. He should only shoot from that spot.
Great effort by the starters in that 2nd quarter. Marvin put in work on the inside.

First half observations.
Sloan and Wannamaker are not worthy, bring on Pargo.
The starting unit looks ready.
Vlad still can shoot.
Stack is horrible, T-mac is semi out of the league.
Ivan and Keith look like hidden gems.

The Benson kid is legit.
Moves his feet on D – refreshing for a rookie – and likes being in the paint looking for putbacks.
Give him minutes (don’t start AJ with practice is enough…) give him minutes exactly as this second quarter: with the starters.

Pleasantly surprised by Benson.

Joe looks good, Marvin looks better than normal, Josh took a couple of bad shots, Teague needs to finish and distribute a little more but I love his on ball defense, did not see much of Al. Zaza, I like his activity but don’t know about his achievement. Benson looks good on defense but needs to rebound. I still prefer Wanamaker over Sloan but don’t really like either right now. Johnson needs to rebound better but I like his activity level, Pape goes strong to the rack sometimes but is not a PG LD. Vlad is okay at making shots, bench is scary bad overall. Early opinions

we getting out rebounded though, kito is a good shotblocker but not a good rebounder. Marvin has 9 points and 5 rebounds (he’s currently leading the team in both categories)

Josh Smith has been, and still is the make or break peice. Folks can call me a hater, but at some point, you’ve gotta bank on more than just your shear athleticism.
You know when folks say, ‘once the kid learns how to play the game…’
Well, Josh still hasn’t gotten that part down. Not hating, just callin’ it like I see it.

LOL . . exactly.
I mean, if you’re going to pay a guy like that 8 million . . . only pay him or 2 – 3 years. Not 5. Hopefully Denver put in a Team Option in year 4. Surely that entire deal is not guaranteed.

you cant say T-mac looked bad when he didn’t even take a shot, all e got was one rebound and that was it. Let him get some time with the secondary and we’ll see.

The speed of Augustin might as well be light speed to the two rookies. Funny thing is I don’t consider DJ Augustin particularly fast. Teague comes back in and dominates him. The talent gap is too much for Sloan and Brad. A pg vet is a must.

LD knows that the 2nd team isn’t potent enough by themselves, so he mixes in the starters with the reserves. Nice move.
