Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

“doesnt really makes sense being that the players had the whole off season and lockout to work on their moves…all im saying is I havent seen anything new from horford so far. I thought the pre season was the time where you work on “new moves” that you been working on in the off season.”

I see what you’re saying now, and I agree Horford is still making the same moves from last season but was he ever really looking to improve on his post game? Unsure if he was, just wondering if he actually said he’s been working on it or has set a goal on working on it

I do however see Atlanta simply cannot change the jump shot mentality..nor can they play defense on the perimeter

I’ll go ahead and call it now…

The Hawks are gonna have some serious depth problems this season.

I mean if Zaza becomes the go-to-guy on the floor with the 2nd unit, I’m worried.

Man is this gonna be a very different season from the one’s we are used to seeing these past few seasons. The Hawks have been one of the youngest teams for a while now, and with all these aging veterans, it will be hard to play defense against these newer, younger teams

@FreshFromATL

Zaza against whom? I mean the ones we are looking to defend are 6′9.5″ 266lb Boozer, 7′0 Bosh, 6′10 Amare, old Garnett, 6′9 David West? or are we talking about Vlad vs backups.

Im hoping Vlad starts or at least plays a LOT more than Marvin.

If T-Mac is all we have to throw out there as the 6th man, the Hawks are in big trouble. Maybe Kirk will fill that roll.

Radmanovic has looked like our best addition so far. He’s moving pretty well and being very aggressive on defense. Surprisingly, he look more mobile than McGracy.

Teague has been very unimpressive so far, as have all of our point guards.

hehe Marvin need a cut. Or a headband or what. JK Marvin by all accounts is a nice guy, I think he has a lot of anger at himself for underachieving or fans maybe for hating on him.

IDK he might just blow up again like vs Shawne Williams. Only new notable thing he’s done.

Considering it’s a pre-season game though, none of the starters will likely look very impressive since they be going at it very hard, nor will they be playing regular minutes.

I really hope that Pape Sy ends up being a pleasant surprise and a keeper. Physically, he has all the tools be a good NBA player at his position. He also seems to have the aggressiveness to be successful. I just don’t know if he has the skill set or the mental tenacity to be successful yet. I really hope he does though, because I’m tired off all the disappointments at PG over the years. We haven’t had a real PG since Mookie.
