Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

Alex,

If you check my posts I have always felt Hawks coaching is an issue. If Hawks had a big time coach, they beat the Bulls in the playoffs I really believe that

northclyde thanks for pointing that out about stephanie i know she looked famaliar.

A bit off topic but in regards to the NBA stars not wanting to come to Atlanta I think someone mentioned some fans havent gotten over Hawks sending Nique for Manning. I think the casual fans for the Hawks will show up when they feel the team has a shot to be one of the elite. You saw that in the playoffs a few years ago against the Celtics and even the Nique years hawks fans might’ve felt they werent going to beat the Pistons in the 80’s or Celtics or Bulls in the 90’s but felt they had a fighting chance. I really think the blowout losses by the Cavs and then the Magic in consecutive years in the playoffs showing no effort turned a lot of the casual Hawks fans off and they have never returned.

No Turnovers for Jeff Teague – Nice

Marvin the best +/- among the starters, and Al with the worst

Benson the best +/- on the night – and 3 blocks. Pendegraft of the scouting dept. does it again. Sund can’t draft, but he finally has a very good evaluator of talent in Pendegraft. Teague, JC2, and now Benson at #19, 27, and 48 – not bad.

We really need Hinrich back quick…

Cute little cat fight side show tonight

Said what big ray said several days ago about stack though I was hopeful to see him ready to contribute. Doubt it.

Funny we had a post man who we tried to make into a point guard several years ago and gave hin away. Also funny to think he will long be remembered in this league than chills will. Irony to all of that.

Overall I haven’t bought into the kol aide but to say we are two prime time players down on a team that struggled down the stretch is a huge worry. I will say it again this team peaked in first half of 2009-2010 and for some reason lost it. Sadly that year the bags didn’t pony up some tax money to get a big for the sretch

stretch run. The team ran out of energy and hasnt gotten it back. Amazed at folks buying the kook aide.

Wanamaker and Johnson will probably both get cut before the next game but I don’t think Johnson deserves it, he actually played with more energy and hustle than almost anyone tonite. He is just going to get cut because of the numbers game

People who hate Joe’s contract, just remember he will always be an 18-20ppg player.

Look at Arenas’s and Rashard’s contracts. They both suck b@lls these days, and Arenas will probably be out of the league in less than 2 years

Al continues his evolution into a poor mans Andrea Bargnani and Brooke Lopez. Doesn’t want to play inside much on offense, but doesn’t have the outside game as those guys.

A poor mans Bargnani and Lopez may be where he’s headed…Good for 18 ppg and 6 rpg, with 4 assists and a block a game, and that’s about it.

I know that’s harsh after 1 preseason game, I just want to see him inside more.

And Teague is about what I thought; a good NBA PG, but not great. Can be spectacular in spurts, but that’s about it. Solid.

SB – I’ve been pushing for Ivan for a while now. I think the guy can contribute, especially the way we need offense on this team.

Sy’s an athlete who can drive and play D – that’s about it. Good wing backup.

I’m concerned we’re just not deep enough to compete in this compressed schedule. Looking over the rosters of other teams, man folks like the Mavs, Thunder, Bulls are deep – even the Heat look deeper than last year.

Cole and Chalmers may not be that good, but with the big 3 they just need adequate at PG to be very good. Hope Curry doesn’t come along to well, or they could be alot more to handle than they already are.

I still think DWade gets hurt in April – he’ll be 30 and still plays his crazy crash the lane game on D and O.

Bench who’ll play some: Sy, ZaZa, Collins, TMac, Pargo if he stays – maybe Benson or Rolle in spots. Until Hinrich comes back.

If LD doesn’t rein in Smoove’s jumper, we may be toast this season. Not getting warm and fuzzies right now, even with JJ looking like his old self.

^So SteveW we’re hoping for injuries to other teams? What a strategy…

NY – Amare
MIA – Wade
IND – D.West
PHI – ??
CHI – Boozer
2 or 3 or all of those teams would beat us regardless. I mean the Bobcats? really.

Usage % = amount of shot attempts and turnovers (possessions used by a player)

Joe.26% Usage
Jeff. 20% Usage
Smith. 20% Usage**
Leuer. 20% Usage
Bogut. 14% Usage**

*Smith would be relegated to offensive boards, dump offs where he can dunk. and Set PnR plays ie where the PG we Stack Joe and a roller on top of each other and Joe curls and hits the roller.

*Maybe this is lowball for Bogut if we feed him in iso. But he would be getting the same things as Smith. Dump offs and offensive boards when we try for 3.

That is a very balanced team.

Tmac>>>>>>>>>>>Bogans. Anyone with half a brain can see that. This was ba preseason game. Tmacs output will improve three folds in the regular season.
