Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

Lol at all the Horford hate in a freakin’ preseason game. Smh. I appreciate the fact that he’s played 4 years out of position and has made two all-star teams. For the record, I’d say he’s EARNED THE RIGHT to ask this sorry management and organization for help. Funny how Joe Johnson says the Hawks need help inside and no one complains about that.

Anyways, interesting game tonight. Alot of work needs to be done.

First of all that courtside reporter i think she does some NBA work for TNT as well. Nice eye candy.

That was about the most exciting thing to take from this game. It is only preseason game but Hawks offense of the bench looks anemic. I do like Benson he can block some shots and is skilled to hit some shots, Sy who is a specialist type of player good defense he reminds me off a keith bogans type. Rolle wasnt that impressed with. Those two guards wannamaker and sloan should be given some money to buy a pack of some black and miles and a Ham sandwich and make like a bad check and bounce

Didn’t want to comment before I watched the entire game:

Good
1) Starters looked a lot faster with Teague in the game, Joe looks ready to go
2) Sy definitely has the speed and physical tools to play (he’s a SG though! Sorry LD)
3) Benson or Rolle will serve the purpose of rebounder/shot-blockers beside Zaza
4) Horford was very steady on Offensive

Bad
1) Stack and Tracy look like guys ready to retire
2) Josh taking bad shots
3) Vladi missed to many open 3s

Overall I liked what I saw out of the starters, Marvin looked a lot better physically and picked his spots. Horford looked a lot more decisive with his moves, immediately jab-stepping and shooting over the shorter Diaw. Jeff didn’t finish all the time, but was still getting to the basket well and his defensive is solid. I think Sy just needs a little more confidence in his jumpshot and he will be very useful off the bench. (nice block on the fastbreak!) I think we will miss Crawford’s offensive some games, but overall we’re a better team defensively without him and Bibby.

If Pargo’s in shape, I think he’s a little better than Sloan and Wannamaker because of his jumpshot. I’m not so down on Sloan and Wannamaker though, Kemba’s a very tough player to handle. Sloan definitely played better than Wannamaker, but they played hard and made some shots.

GO HAWKS!!

The only person I like off that bench is Benson, and I only like his potential not what he currently is because he needs to rebound better, if he can get a couple of blocks and rebound better he is a keeper. Sloan and Wanamaker both can kick rocks. T-MAC and Stack both can kick rocks and bring in Bogans please. MC any chance we bring in Bogans? Rolle and Johnson, I prefer Johnson’s activity but don’t care for him either. Pape is not a PG and made some bad turnovers. He had one good play to about 5 bad one’s. Zaza had good activity but needs to finish.

Teague C
Joe B+
Josh C-
Al C
Marvin B+
Zaza B-
Benson C+
Johnson C
Rolle C-
Stack C-

Everyone else D’s and F’s

Agreed. But until that help comes, what do you do? You man up and get the job done. That’s all I expect out of Al. He’s earned every accolade he’s gotten. But he’s gotta keep earning them. Like it or not, he’s the absolute best big man we have….by a long mile.

Here’s a question for all of you bloggers out there:

If you could choose one coach in today’s NBA to coach the Hawks, who would it be? Your answer has to be one of the 30 active NBA head coaches.

I have a feeling that I won’t get many answers to this question, but I’m just throwing it out there. Oh, and I bet I’ll get a few responses saying that no coach could go far with this team lol. A lot of people seem to be in a salty mood.

Joe.Jeff.Smith.Bogut.Leuer,

I really don’t know what your fascination is with Leuer, but I see you posting this same stuff on every Hawks blog on the internet. It’s nice that you put the time and have stats to back up your ideas, but I hope you realize that this trade you want and this lineup you preach is never going to happen. At some point, you have to wake up and realize that the Hawks are the Hawks. I don’t understand the point in posting about some hypothetical scenario over and over when you know it will never happen. I could understand you mentioning it once or twice, but damn, after a while it gets a bit old. I’m sorry but Bogut and Leuer are not coming to Atlanta.

Alex,

It’s hard not to be salty when you see your team experiencing a lot of the exact same problems that you saw from them before, and before that, and before….well you get the point.

Coaches? Give me Lionel Hollins. His job isn’t clearly that much better than this one, and he wouldn’t cost too much. Oh wait. Anybody not working for Hawks ownership clearly has a better job than this one. Whatever was I thinking…

brigadierjerry,

Great choice. I’ve always liked Popovich too. In my opinion, he’s the best coach in the league today. He knows how to place guys into the roles that they excel in, and as a result, he knows how to get the most out of the players he has.

Anyone with eyes can see.

Bogans greater than T-Mac and Stack and he is out there available for vet minimum
Dalembert would be a great addition to this team and he is just out there to bad had, maybe for full MLE which we have or a sign and trade.
We need a backup PG because none of these guys are going to cut it and Pargo is more of a scorer also.

I am happy that this lazy approach to just picking up vet minimum, d-league, and undrafted people is blowing up in Sund and the ASG faces.

I hear you on that, Big Ray. I’m tired of seeing the same mistakes over and over too. But, that’s why I bring up coaches. I feel like the right coach could change a lot of the bad habits we’ve seen. I feel like we need a strong-willed no-nonsense type of coach who isn’t afraid to bench anyone on the team if they not following the game plan and refusing to refrain from their bad habits. Unfortunately, I doubt ownership will ever hire someone like that. The best coaches cost way too much anyway, but this is just a hypothetical discussion discussion anyway, assuming things like money are not an issue and we can have anyone we want.

Big Ray,

Agreed. However, neither he or this team has four more years to wait for it. Had he came into the league complaining, that would be one thing. But, he didn’t. He pointing out the obvious…this team is not going to compete for a title with an undersized front court. The clock is ticking, but this sorry excuse for ownership and management refuse to address the blunders they’ve made. I don’t think Al is doing anything different than many other all-stars past and present have done in similar situations. Simply saying, “try harder” with the status quo ain’t goin’ to cut and it’s wasting time, opportunies and careers.

superiorblogman has a point. Bogans is a defensive specialist who can hit the corner three. He’s a role player who knows his role and doesn’t try to do more than he can. He could fill a niche for the Hawks. I don’t know why management wouldn’t try to pursue him over one of the unproven scrub guards that they are looking to sign for the minimum.

NUNNA!!

December 19th, 2011

I would choose Paul Silas of the hornets..
1st of all,he would make everyone play their positions..
He would have josh rebounding and looking for his pg on the break..
He would stop josh from all of the same sh*t he did last year with the outside shots and now the fade aways..
He would have joe acting like a sg and get open for his shots and no more of the holding, holding, holding the ball and then driving or spotting up for a jumper..He would take his shots a lot sooner and score often..

He would put Al at pf like he is supposed to be..

He would get rid of marvin, pachula, josh, and joe for some draft picks and rebuild this team over!!
We’re going nowhere folks..We’re gonna be 7th or 8th seed if we make it too the playoffs..

I will still root for this team but unlike the past 2 years i won’t be lying to my heart..I will honest and tell u all now that,i like the potential of the younger players than the potential of the 4 i named for the trade to lead us into the future..

Its my schtick. Your name should be Joe,Al,Josh and sometimes Jeff. Marvin is an absolute non factor.
You do realize Atlanta is playing 4 on 5 with Marv no matter what?
I want to know the fascination with Marvin and Horford. Or thinking that Josh Smith will bring back ANY talented center.

I’m sorry but as of right now Bogut and Leuer are better than Horford+Marvin/McGrady
until Horford is jettisoned for conventional players Atlanta will continue to suck.
