Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

before you people start saying how we’re going to suck this year because of this. please know that THIS IS NOT THE TEAM THAT WILL BE OUT THERE IN CLOSE GAMES. just to make it clear lol. expect joe, josh, al out there in close games. not sy, stack, and the rest of those young guys out there. we’ll be fine. i’m somewhat pleased from what i saw tonight at times.

What a joke… Not even one Rebound from Horford, not even 1 point from McGrady. This Bench is really going to suck because there is not offense coming from it.

As far as reserves, positive grades for Rolle, Benson, Johnson, and Sy.

I don’t expect much out of TMac to be honest. Stackhouse won’t be signed (why would we do that? Should have done it two years ago).

“Looking at stats in one preseason game for a veteran player on a team he’s been on for years isn’t going to tell you much, even when that game has stats that are an anomaly.”

Yeah, but hounding Horford’s ass is so much fun! ;-)

Apparently.

Kemba Walker has some good energy and some nice moves. But he’s going to get a shock when the real games start. Especially in the EC…Derrick Rose, Deron Williams, John Wall, Rajon Rondo….get ready kid…

I agree. Bring on Iverson. But you know this franchise is scared to sign guys with a strong personality like Iverson.

The way I see it, Gearon is right: This IS a make or break year.

Drew and Sund are on the final year of their deals, Kirk will be a FA, Joe could get amnestied, Josh and Al could get traded.

We only have to deal with this for a few more months, then it’s time to clean house.

The Hawks are really going to miss Jamal. This bench looks like its going to be terrible. What is Flip up to now a days? He would be an upgrade over what I see sitting on the bench now. The two young pg’s trying to make the team did not impress me one bit. Stack is done.. Defensively Teague was on top of his game but he really has to learn to finish better. I think as the season goes on he will so im not worried about Teague at all but man this bench is terrible. Outside of Zaza I have no confidence in anyone else sitting on the pine. Sy could be a solid defender but its clear he is not a pg but rather a sg/sf. The top 6 guys for the Hawks will have to log big minutes this season.

Big Ray,

For the record, I don’t consider sharing my personal knowledge of the NBA to be a waste of my time. When responding becomes a waste of my time, I will stop responding.

I’m aware that everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I respect that. I don’t mind when people disagree. What bothers me is snotty remarks putting someone else’s opinion down without any factual evidence or experience to justify it. You can share your points with whomever you want on whichever blog you want, but don’t try to force them on others or poke fun at / insult the integrity of others’ opinions just because you disagree.

I’m not new to blogging, and I realize that manners are not something you can expect from every blogger, but obviously, when you call out something someone mentions, they are going to retaliate. I can’t say that I refrain from doing that all of the time.

I’m not feeling too good about the team so far. I have confidence in Joe, Josh, and Al, but that’s about it. I still don’t know whether or not Teague will be reliable as a starter, and our bench looks like a joke.

I’m glad this is only preseason. If that was a regular season game, I’d be really worried about the team.

@Slimjr

When has NBA TV ever really said good things about the Hawks? Steve Smith and Greg Anthony defend the team sometimes, but most of the time, the Hawks are put down by TV analysts regardless of any success which they may have. That’s the way I’ve seen it, anyway.

Let me see, what did I see in that preseason game that I’ve never seen before, and therefore cannot be an indicator of what will happen in the regular season?

1) Josh taking long jumpers (and missing), turning the ball over, blocking shots, and rebounding pretty well.

2) Al hitting a very high percentage of his shots, but not getting much done on the glass, or from a scoring standpoint in the post.

3) Teague not making jumpers.

4) Marvin contributing but not making a difference. Yes, it’s possible.

5) Two old vets (one we’ve signed, one we haven’t) looking close two awful on the floor, as in well past their ability to contribute.

6) The Hawks missing nearly all of their three pointers. The Hawks taking a pile of jumpers and missing the majority of them.

7) Larry Drew talking about mixing and matching lineups like it’s a swap meet.

Wait….I have seen all this before. Kinda eery. No, no really. I get it. It’s a preseason game. And we have scrubs on the floor. But ummm….

If it means anything, I thought Walker was very unimpressive as well, and he was a lottery pick, so maybe our bench isn’t as bad as I thought it was. It’s just too difficult to make assumptions based on the preseason. And watching 3rd string players puts me to sleep.
