Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: Game thread

Charlotte–The Hawks plan to sign point guard Jannero Pargo. He’s expected to join the team tomorrow.

Pargo, 32, was didn’t play in a game during a 14-game stint with Chicago last season after playing 63 games for the Bulls in 2009-10. He’s a high-usage guard who isn’t much of a shooter but takes the bulk of his shots from 16 feet and out. His assist rate was among the lowest for point guards in 2009-10, according to hoopdata.com

Pargo’s defensive PER numbers as a point guard in 2009-10 weren’t good, according to 82games.com. His Synergy defensive numbers that season were weak and Chicago allowed two points fewer per 100 possessions when he was off the court, according to basketballvalue.com.

Notes

  • Larry Drew is using the regular lineup but he plans to play the starters no more than 20 minutes. Jason Collins (knee) is out for precautionary reasons. Magnum Rolle (foot) said he’s good to go.
  • In addition to evaluating the young guards, Drew said he wants to try out different lineups combinations to see how players fit together. “I want to take a look at all the new faces and see how they fare with all the things we’ve put in,” he said.
  • Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense. “It’s a tough think to break bad habits–not bad habits, but when you are used to doing things a certain way,” Drew said.
  • The Hawks are paying for tolls on GA 400, including Cruise Card and Peach Pass lanes, tomorrow from 7-9 a.m. Dominique Wilkins will be among those handing out schedule magnets and $50 gift cards to be used for Hawks ticket purchases.
  • Corey Maggette (back), Melvin Ely (dehydration), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) are out for the Bobcats.

According to the article at SBNation, the Hawks also signed Earl Watson. Is that true? Isn’t that going to put the Hawks into the luxury tax area?

gee, maybe pargo can run his offense through twin then, two do nothings.

sounds worthless to me and only fits a very sad criteria of being a vet. can he help us or is it he might not help us, he sounds like a replica of what bibby is now.

Is there a lack of confidence that Teague can handle, quarterback the offense?I get the impression Drew and crew are sold on him taking over.

We have a good team maybe we need to go big lineup all the time so marvin can add depth to the bench but we would be slower. We should of went for Bibby over this pargo guy jk. We should of traded Marvin Willams and j Smoove for Artest and bynum.

I mention Pargo as potential backup after he was release from the Bulls last week but I didn’t know his numbers were that bad…. I will take a long look at Sloan and Wannamaker tonight….

MC, your overview of Pargo left me less than excited. By signing him, does this mean that the roster is complete? Can they cut him in a week or two if he is not able to outplay any of the rookie pgs? Why didn’t they just invite him to camp and see if he can make the team?

RE: Truth B Known
Horford does not “Suck”. It depends on what you value.

For a team without a superstar or 2 we need elite role players to define an identity. Joe is our offense, he gets double teams. Teague is coming along. Stretch 4 Jon Leuer is Teague and Joe’s outside option.

Inside players are also defensive stalwarts Josh Smith and Bogut. Atlanta would become the number one defensive team in the league. Teague is not a natural point guard but with Joe we don’t need one. Only guys who can break down defenses stretch the defense, and draw fouls/finish high % plays.

Signing Pargo shows you how cheap and clueless the Hawks owner/GM are. I would rather take my chance with one of the rookies. This guy has no defense and no offense, then what is the point in singing him….? I can see if he was a good defender but from what MC posted up he is not.

Joe.Jeff.Smith.Bogut.Leuer I agree, I often color commentary to push buttons. At the end of the day, Horford is a good player who hasnt raised his game to very good. I wish hed own the 5 position and embrace it.

The question I ask is does Drew and crew have any confidence that Teague is the guard of the future or of now for the hawks?

Do you see Teague taking charge and lifting Atlanta higher?

Drew said he also would deploy the new, aggressive defense.
———-
He said that the other day and said that last year. Stop. I like that Vladimir Radmanovic is a stretch 4, but he’s garbage. I’m not sure if Brian Cardinal is not better.

Jon Leuer and Bogut for Horford and pick(s). MOVE NOW! The Market is changing Gearon. No one is staying for another rebuild. Which it will be when Josh is traded for cr@p.

Did Jannero Pargo Play with Joe Johnson?

Teague has BOATLOADS of potential. But its all in playmaking. As of now he reminds me of a mini-Iguodala, except Iguodala is a better passer! Maybe a miniature rookie Iguodala.

Unsure of how to draw doubles and make plays. I think he has the Nash-Cp3 ability to use PnRs and dribble circles around the defense drawing multiple defenders.

But idk if he ever reaches that potential on this Horford+Smith team. The ATL Hawks are relying on Marvin Williams and Vlad Radmanovic to bust zones, shoot and slash off the swing pass and collapsed defenses.

Then when we go big and Teague has no shooters except Joe.

Aye caramba

Boris Diaw at center vs Al Horford. Al has height and conditioning advantage but Boris might be quicker. Then again Boris is terrible and often fat.

Josh Smith vs Tyrus Thomas. Similar height. Tyrus is freakishly long but slower. Tyrus seems to be smarter. Josh will catch the ball trailing.try to break him off the dribble. Aye caramba.

I think Tyrus will give Josh problems. And now we see Tyrus with a made corkscrew pull up. Mid range game?Looks like he was in the lab as well.

Hawks could very well lose LMAO
