Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 4
8:57 pm December 12, 2011, by Michael Cunningham

Media Day (David Tulis/AJC Special)
Notes and quotes gathered at Hawks media day while realizing I won’t see 70 percent of these people for the rest of the season. . . .
- I haven’t been in the locker room yet but Larry Drew said he’s put up a new sign that reads: “No excuses.” “I told them there are no more excuses at this point of our careers,” Drew said. “It’s time to take the next step.
- That’s a good point. Hawks players and coaches can wish they had more pieces–nearly every team in the league does–but if this is the team they are going to have, then this is who is going to have to get it done. It’s not as if they don’t have players or experience.
- “In order for us to become champs in this league we are all going to have to step our game up at some point,” Joe Johnson said. “We can’t blame it on ‘what we need.’ We can get it done with this group that we’ve got. We just have to believe it.”
- Drew said Tracy McGrady and Jerry Stackhouse can provide the kind of leadership the Hawks have lacked: “Both guys have been at this long enough, they are not afraid to step on toes. That is one of the most important ingredients for veteran leadership. Irregardless of being here a short time, they are not afraid to voice their opinion, step on toes and call guys out. We haven’t had that in the past.”
- Drew said J.J. needs to do more, too: “He knows the rest of the guys look up to him. He’s always been a leader by example, now we really need him to step up and really be more vocal. Don’t hold it in. We are a team that has been together for a while now and it’s time to turn the corner. To do that, we need him to step up and be more vocal.”
- The biggest drop-off in J.J.’s numbers last season came at the 3-point line. I asked him if his injured elbow contributed to that: “I’m a guy who never makes excuses. I had a down year last year and I’m look forward to bouncing back. I don’t blame my elbow or none of that. I am just going to play the game the way I know how and contribute the best way I can.”
- Tracy McGrady was pretty upfront about where he’s at in his career: “I had some injuries that set me back for two years but I was fortunate to bounce back from those. I’m not a 30-point scorer anymore but I can still play the game.”
- Josh Smith told AJC wise guy Jeff Schultz that he’s worked on his mid-range game but wouldn’t be taking as many 3-pointers: “You’re going to see less of that from me.”
- The stat geek inside of me immediately opened his smart mouth: “But better to take 3s when you have a 49.7 effective field-goal percentage, and make long 2s at a 39-percent clip.” Sometimes that stat geek is no fun.
- Vladimir Radmanovich put on his Hawks jersey for the first time. “Everybody knows I am a 3-point shooter and I am a guy that stretches the offense,” he said. “I am going to try to do that and help guys get more space down in the paint to operate.”
- I told him I noticed he had pretty good blocks and steals rates last season. He attributed it to dropping weight last season: “Not having so much weight gives me the opportunity to be quicker and lighter and I think that helped me last year in terms of steals and blocks. There are some advantages to it and some disadvantages to it. You have to pick your poison.
- Everyone wanted to know if the Jeff Teague we saw against the Bulls is the same one we are going to see this season. The consensus was the Teague is playing as if he intends to back that up.
- Drew: “Looks like he’s had a really good offseason. Judging by the first practices he’s really playing at a high level. His speed and quickness just makes us a totally different team. I expect him to take the bull by the horns. I don’t want him to have to wait on anybody. Let’s force the other guys to keep up with him. He’s the type of player that can impact the game with his speed and quickness.”
- Joe: “I see him picking up right where he left out. I told Jeff coming in to this year he has to be that leader on the court where guys really can trust him. I’ve seen the work he put in over the summer, working on his jump shot and penetrating and making plays for guys. We are going to need him to do it. He’s a great defender, a guy who loves to get in the passing lanes. When he turns that corner, the Atlanta Hawks are going to turn that corner as well.”
- J.J. has noticed what I’ve noticed: Teague is carrying himself differently now. “You can see how he communicates, his body language, knowing that he is going to have the rock in his hand making decisions.”
- There also were some questions about how the Hawks would replace Jamal Crawford’s scoring. “I’m going to step my game up,” J.J. said. “Josh is going to step his up, Al his going to step his up. I think [we do it] collectively as a team. It’s not just going to be one guy. I think we are going to have to do something to pick up the slack.”
- “We are going to have to depend on me and Marvin and Al and Teague to fill that void that Jamal left,” Josh said.
- Kirk Hinrich said he hasn’t been cleared to run yet so he’s trying to stay in shape by getting on the bike and elliptical machine. “It’s just frustrating not to be able to play,” he said.
- The Clippers claimed Chauncey Billups.

He’s right. No excuses to not start Teague.

Seeing RED!
____________
FTPB
RED
I posted this last week when I heard on 790 The Zone from Matt Chernoff that the ASKG spent 2M to open a full service restaurant inside Phillips Arena.
These fat cats don’t want to spend 2M on luxury tax? Why did they purchase a NBA team if, they are more interested in the restaurant business?
RED? WTF kinda name is that? I could free style 20 better names for a FKN restaurant than “RED”.
Spend some damned money on this roster azz-holes!!!
Ain’t nobody gonna’ be sittin’ up in no ASKG restaurant in addition to paying for game tickets. Hella, we eat before we come down there or somewhere else after the game.
Full Service? WTH is that supposed to mean? We gotta’ over pay for bad food and tip the waiter too? Ha Ha!
Hell to the naw – bruh!!! Ain’t gonna’ happen. I hope your stupid restaurant named RED goes bankrupt!
I really hate these owners, they don’t even have a clue. They are the 1% ers.

I’m really curious to see how our captains “step their games up” this season. I don’t expect to see much of an improvement for Joe from his career norms (which are already impressive, with last season being an outlier). As for Josh and Al, I’m really interested in seeing what they’ve improved on during the offseason. I’m not sure whether we’ll be seeing Josh more at the 4 or the 3 this year, but at 225, he may get worn down playing the 4 exclusively against so many bigger players. Also, in terms of Al, I’d like to see what he’s done to improve his post game and driving ability. It’s a big mystery right now. I saw clips of him in the FIBA Americas tournament during the summer and he seemed to have some new moves that I’ve never seen him use before. He was easily the best player on the court in most of those games. But, then again, those games were against competition much inferior to the NBA, so how Al’s improvements fair against elite competition in this league remains to be seen.

@MC,
As always, good job on the rundown. However, all of these comments sound like the same things we’ve been hearing for the last five years. I really do hope the Hawks are “seriously” looking at trades because it has been proven repeatedly that this core group is not going to go any further than it already has.

Teague needs to be our vocal leader and floor general supported by a mature, focussed Josh Smith. Joe isn’t that guy. We need that emotional “it” factor that woody & LS have tried to crush in Teague and Josh bc they don’t understand “it”.

For that amount they could have resigned Jamal.

Quote It!
I love the fantastic quotes from all the players and the new players too! Like Ken Strickland and SlimJr has been saying all along – there is a newness and a buzz to this team so far.
Sometimes less is more in terms of not making splash moves just to make some noise, (see the Philly Eagles this year and the Magic last year). Sometimes, like those two aforementioned teams – a GM can try too hard, do too much and disrupt good chemistry.
These owners want to drain the blood from a turnip with this core. Let’s hope the core start to bleed profusely and hemorrhage enough wins to an ECF and Championship game. Be that dark horse.
These quotes got me fired up now. Let’s boycott that new RED restaurant yawl. Don’t feed the ASKG if they won’t spend luxury taxes and use MLE and 3M cash drops from trading two picks. I’ll support this team, but not the ASKG extracurricular activities. Are you with me on that boycott?

Well MC, if Stack doesn’t garner a roster spot, perhaps he can take Nick Van Exel’s old job and help Teague feed his

I cannot believe all the hate for Larry Drew. Larry Drew has done a fine job with this team, and offensively we are light-years ahead of the past. Don’t let your hate for ASG being cheap, transfer to Drew. Sure he was a cheap hire, but he’s done a great job and has deserved none of this criticism. As for not starting Teague, there is a reason for that. They were easing him into the game, even though he had not shown anything great and showed zero confidence, when Bibby was the starting PG. When we traded for Hinrich, Drew was FORCED to start him. We made a lucrative deal and Drew had to make our franchise not look stupid. The Teague that showed up during the Playoffs was NOT the Teague that showed up n the regular season. Night and Day difference. Anyone who watched the Hawks’ whole season could tell you that. Teague’s outstanding play in the playoffs has warranted him the start to start the year. If he does well and Drew benches him as soon as Hinrich comes back, then bash him.

I also will say the Hawks matchup decently with the Heat. I wont guarantee they would win the series but I think it would be a tough series. Indiana getting West will be a much improved team as well as NY although lack of a true point guard will be a negative but they will be a bit better defensively overall with Tyson Chandler.. Phili will be good. I see Boston not being as good as well as Chicago not being as good as far as win total goes I think the Hawks will finish max 3 seed in east, at worst 5 seed.

to risk sounding like the beloved ken strickland ….. the key to this team and how far it goes is if jeff teague can continue his progression we all saw in the playoffs and stay healthy. if marvin comes close to his contract year, then we might have something special that i felt was there a few years past. if only we had a legit 10-15 minute big like dampier off the bench on a good night, then we might make waves. with all that, once kirk comes back then this team is dangerous.
is stack one of the fold now for sure? what took the basg and rick sund two years to make this move? is it too late and he is nothing more than a joe smith?

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a Hawk say “that’s the way it goes sometimes” after a double digit loss I could afford season tickets. Acquiring depth won’t help this team until the starters (except Horford) can look in the mirror and find some heart.

oh dmb, matty is better than mv7 any day and improving and i was an mv7 fan and a matty detractor coming out of bc. get a few lineman signed to protect him next year and we got something. he is better than manning 2 was at this stage of the game and will work to improve, which i might add was mv7’s undoing. sorry guys, mv7, just isnt a pro.
brig, i am amazed at all the folks trying to get into the prediction mode since obviously the deals aint done yet. i have to wait and then come up with my swammy read and i have hit it for years now. aj and big ray will attest as they might be all that is left from the 13 win team debacle that sat here and held the blog together that year and i hit that right on the nose and have followed suit ever since.
c billips to clips? that is better than paul. silly azz stern, as he thinks he can pull strings to make the hornets relevant, he is a fool as he is responsible for the pause that has set the owners back in some cash flow and didnt serve up anything he promised. man it is fun to watch billionaires as luck as they are think they are smarter than the average bear. i really cant stand to look at him and he certainly needs to go and wonder how long it will take for a mutiny of the owners?

Myself having used quite freqently the non word ain’t

I am not going to critique the man on his linguistics.
Being a Coach is hard enough, so, I’ll stick to
critiquing his coaching techniques.

I like the attitude of “No Excuses” but I hope that LD takes this to heart. He’s got to keep working in games to find combination that work. Too often last year the team was flat and he tried one thing, but didn’t try anything else. I think this is part of the reason that Jeff didn’t play much because LD was content with playing Jamal hoping things got better. LD will be forced to use Jeff a lot and I think the series in Chicago made him understand the clear benefit of having him on the court for extended periods. Without Kirk around LD better realize that he has no good bench defenders except for Sy. Pape is a good defender, but from what I’ve seen he gets in foul trouble very quickly. I hope that LD realizes this ahead of time and doesn’t throw Sy in the doghouse after he picks up 2 fouls in 30 seconds. LD can’t just blame the players for not working hard and make sure he tries everything he can to win!

DMB, you go back-2-back on the entertainment news…good stuff. And I heard Khloe is all-in with Lamar headed to the Big D! Cuban meets the Kardashians…..I guess Jenner can now be front and center at the AAA!
And I’m with ya! No RED for me! Let Gearon and his cronies sit in there by themselves while they feed this roster to the city of Atlanta.
We have good pieces, and yes, pieces good enough to get to the playoffs.
And yes, to possibly get to the 2nd round. Right now, the difference between the optimism of last year and this year is one guy:
Jeff Teague – he will have to be the lil engine that could. He doesn’t have a backup and shouldn’t worry about competition. Sund hasn’t stepped up and addressed this role off the bench. You need a game changer off the bench who directs this team.
Well? Your move now Sund………retain that slot over Orlando before they are able to strengthen themselves.

in the mean time, so many qb’s stand head and shoulders ahead of him only for his lack of dedication. he just isnt worth the hype or the adulation and i wanted him to be. 13 weeks for a high anle sprain and qb’s in the league now are coming back in one season to have two such injuries like sam bradford this year and we will see how long pittsburg is without one.
he also won us the award of two sorry coaches as his behavior gave blank an excuse to fire dan and we got mora who you despise and even worse petrino. thank you mv7 for all true falcon fans. has he killed another coach in andy reid who believed in him? that would make four. coach killer par excellance.
getting back to basketball, what i hate is any reference to mv7 and josh smith. that truly disgusts me.

“sad to say he was too thick in the head to get much better. ”
As we see so often with the Hawks, coaching matters. Vick had a joke of a coaching staff during his formative years as a quarterback. Ryan doesn’t. When Vick landed in Philly, with a coaching staff that knew what they were doing, he suddenly did “get much better”. He had an incredible season last year and did things on a weekly basis that Ryan can only dream of doing.
Looking at the full body of work, I see one guy who has had a good supporting cast and coaching staff from day one, and one guy whose career was sidetracked by a poor supporting cast and coaching staff before Andy Reid did what Dan Reeves and Jim Moron should have done ten years ago. It’s not meaningful to compare their careers without taking this into account.

DOC-you old fart, what’s wrong with sounding like me, HA, HA?
Some of you are so focused on who and/or what you think we need to improve, you can’t seem to see how we can improve with what we already have. Even with the amount of time our core has been in the league and played together, there’s still plenty of room for individual improvement among them.
I think the elimination of Orlando last yr in the 1st rd of the playoffs, and the way we battled Chicago in the semifinals, with our injuries and new PG, I think each of our returning players gained a new confidence, determination, and committment. I believe that’s been adequately demonstrated by the way they all worked so hard during the off season to get in what might be the best shape of their career.

“13 weeks for a high anle sprain”
I don’t know if you are referring to his 2003 injury, but that was a broken fibula, not a high ankle sprain.
“he also won us the award of two sorry coaches as his behavior gave blank an excuse to fire dan and we got mora who you despise and even worse petrino. thank you mv7 for all true falcon fans. has he killed another coach in andy reid who believed in him? that would make four. coach killer par excellance.”
The Reeves firing was misguided (the smart thing to do would have been to strip him of personnel duties), but I don’t see where you connect anything Vick did to that firing. It was pretty well accepted at the time that Reeves predated Blank, who wanted to replace him with someone of his own choosing.
As for Moron, he has proven emphatically since being fired by the Falcons that he does not belong on an NFL sideline.
As for Reid — knowing what we know now about Kevin Kolb, it’s quite likely that Vick saved Reid’s job last year when he replaced him in Week 2. Philly fans have been calling for Reid’s head for years. If anything is going to kill his job this year, it is the rookie defensive coordinator he inexplicably promoted to that position despite a total lack of experience, not the quarterback who has their offense ranked 4th in the league.
The one coach you can blame Vick for is Petrino, who came to Atlanta for the sole purpose of coaching Vick and bolted when he found that he wouldn’t get the opportunity.

najeh, a fibula is a stable fracture by definition unless it is a compund and that usually is accompanied by a tibula as well in the theisman injury, real ugly. that fracture alone only takes at the most 6 weeks to heal. the other problem that kept him out was the sprain that he said “kept him from being me” so he laid back and watched his coach and team go down. dan reeves did not get a chance and did more with the rookie mv7 than anyone. as i said the unbelievable slow recovery for a 23 yr old on that injury, gave blank an excuse to get rid of him. that is worse than geriatric speed bone healing with no vit d in the system, najeh. you were the only one not scratching their head on what was taking him so long to get better.
you are as much an enabler as was blank and moron who was the worst enabler of them all. at some point as ld says the excuses have to stop. this year mv7 has come back to his usual numbers of 80% efficiency. last year was an anomaly. man love at its best.

I will defer to your medical knowledge, of course, and as a fantasy owner of Vick in three separate leagues I get as frustrated as anyone with his slow healing, but if you are trying to imply that he intentionally sat out games so that Reeves would get fired, you’re going to need better evidence than that.
” last year was an anomaly.”
30 TDs in 12 games, 8.1 yards per attempt. That is one hell of an anomaly. I challenge you to show me one other QB in history who had one anomalous season like that without putting up similar numbers in subsequent seasons.
Nah, last year is just what Vick can do with a competent coaching staff and a healthy O-line all season. A lot of things have gone wrong this year, including DeSean Jackson alligator arming to try to save himself for his next contract and several early season O-line injuries, not to mention Vick’s own frustrating injuries that have caused him to miss parts of six different games, but through all that they are still the league’s #4 offense. Vick’s dip in passing efficiency is mainly because of the way QB rating is calculated. The TDs he was racking up through the air last year are being scored by McCoy on the ground this year. Passing TDs have a huge impact on QB rating. Vick’s passing TDs are down, and McCoy is correspondingly on pace to break the Eagles’ single season TD record.

Lost Time!
MV7 cost himself two years and can only blame himself. Green eggs and ham is not proper nutrition for anyone, much less a world class athlete.
Being the last to arrive and first to leave the building is a character issue and true reflection of work ethic. Mike did that to his teammates, his coaches, Arthur Blank and himself. There is no one else to blame.
Mike didn’t go to jail two years for dog fighting, like Martha Stewart and many others, Mike went to jail for lying to a federal investigator.
But hey, all is forgiven. The Falcons were forced to move on and are much better for it. Mike is a really good person who just lost his way. I am proud of him for turning things around and recovering his wealth. Philly just added too many pieces at once that hasn’t had time to gel, or that just didn’t fit their team dynamics.
Just my take on the hot topic.

If Teague can do that he will have put the starting PG position back into its correct place but we still have to find a backup PG, someone to replace Jamal and a starting C. 3 pieces are needed. 3 pieces are not needed: Kirk, Zaza, Marvin

btw a high ankle sprain involves the ligaments that hold the tibia and fibula together and how you can have both. so every time you move quickly it hurts and limits mobility as the fibula and tibia separate to continue to micro-tear the tissue. i believe it can be stabilized a bit with wrapping. yes, it hurt mv7’s game but josh smith still tried to soar on one leg the season he suffered one and was out 2 weeks for an example of a guy much maligned who plays hurt; just as he did last year with a knee injury as both of them didnt allow him to be who he was. mv7 showed his first glimpse of immaturity with that injury najeh and it came home to roost. remember how he and blank shared a heart rendering tear over the injury?

This team goes as far as all of them takes it, Marvin Williams as Always is the X Factor, and not the one on Fox, if he balls the Hawks win. Yeah it would be nice to have Dalembert or even Ryan Hollins, not Kwame Brown, & is Arenas in shape? Though Id rather take a chance on Michael Redd since their taking chances this year, The Mavericks were 15 Deep, well 14 1/2 >> B Cardinal The Hawks have never had depth, not Nique, Not Smitty, Def not The Jet/Shareef, & not These Hawks either, their a little better, but not really, though our starters should ball out and Marvin, we cant put it all on them, our bench doesnt have to suck this year, Go Hawks Go Falcons

Just out of curiosity, how many of you think that we’ll see the same annoying tendencies from L.D. this season as we saw from last season?
Part of me is pretty happy that Bibby and Crawford are no longer on the team so that prevents Drew from doing some of the questionable things that he attempted last season, such as asking a scorer and volume shooter to play point guard and asking guys who are poor defenders (Jamal) and physically-incapable defenders (Bibby) to guard some of the fastest and best offensive players on the opposing team. Also, with the Hinrich injury, Drew is basically forced to start Teague, unless he attempts something crazy, so that eliminates one of his most idiotic tendencies right off the bat.
However, I wonder if we’ll still see some poor judgement on his part, such as the use of the “2 foul rule”, asking Teague to play most of his minutes off-the-ball while guys like Joe attempt to play point guard (basically nullifying Teague’s most valuable abilities), and other things of that nature.
I’m also curious as to whether L.D.will still encourage our big men to spot up for jumpers in the motion offense, or if he will encourage the team to get back to playing inside more the way they have done in the past, considering the Hawks were at the bottom of the league in terms of points scored in the paint. I also wonder if he will continue to a larger emphasis on transition defense than on offensive rebounding. It’s pretty much pick your poison in terms of that. You have to make a trade-off, but from my personal preference, I’d recommend crashing the glass (at least the big men, while the guards focus on transition D).
Those are things that I’m very curious to see as the season unfolds, in addition to seeing what the players themselves can do and how they’ve improved, of course.

Larry Drew – NO EXCUSES . . “I told them there are no more excuses at this point of our careers,” Drew said. “It’s time to take the next step.
“In order for us to become champs in this league we are all going to have to step our game up at some point,” Joe Johnson said. “We can’t blame it on ‘what we need.’ We can get it done with this group that we’ve got. We just have to believe it.”
***************************
Finally someone gets it. This is what I wanted to start seeing from these guys, at least from our leaders. And I agree, this should be the motto for the ENTIRE ORGANIZATION.
NO EXCUSES
From the ball boy who wipes sweat off the court, to the fat cats of the ASG who sign the cheks.
NO . . (( BLEEPIN )) . . EXCUSES !!!
Now . . . Al Horford . . . since you know that there’s a high probability that no one is coming to help you, how do YOU respond to this? No more comments about what we need. Just work your butt off and get the damn thing done.
To get to the next level with this squad, this is what I think needs to happen
LARRY DREW – Learn when you need to insert DEFENSIVE PLAYERS into a game in order to stop a run, not insert more offense to keep scoring. This is your 2nd year as head coach, but you’ve been around “the core” from the beginning. Push these guys to the limit and don’t be afraid to step on anybody’s toes.
JOE JOHNSON – play at a 2nd team All-NBA level ( whether you get voted to the team or not ). You do this, and people can’t say isht about you
AL HORFORD – play like a LEGIT All-Star . . and average at least 11 rebounds a game. Be the TOUGH GUY.
JOSH SMITH – put a limit on your ill-advised long jumpers and attack the rim. Do this, and you’ll make your 1st All-Star team
MARVIN WILLIAMS – be a consistent contributor EVERY NIGHT. No more David Copperfield disappearing acts. 13 ppg – 7.5 rebs – 37% 3FG should be your goal
JEFF TEAGUE – play at 1989 – 90 Spud Webb level ( 9 ppg – 6 asst ) and put the ball down people’s throats . . if you want to be an IMPACT PLAYER, play at 1990 – 91 Spud Webb level ( 13 ppg – 6 asst )
*************************
Those are high goals for those 5 players. But that’s what it’s going to take if we’re getting to that next level.

Some commentaries on latest Hawks’ videos/interviews:
1. Zaza loving the bruises and the scratches, saying “that the typical Zaza look”…
And there are people that don’t like this guy?? Really??
Also: Rad = typical european = pick ‘n pop.
2. Teague SOUNDS different. Last year you could barely listen to his voice and he looked away.
This year he looks “grown up”:
3. Stack is actually looking physically very very fit and he kind of sounds like the veteran we need in the locker room.
4. Rad said something interesting = we have a short training camp, a short pre-season and a crunched schedule.
Teams which have been just assembled (with key players just added) should struggle a bit more than our guys who have been playing together for a long time.
BUT, coaching will be even more important to manage minutes and match ups.
That will be our Achilles’ eel IMO…

Hawks Schedule in first 22 games
- 13 road games
- a 5 game in 6 night stretch in the 2nd week of the season
- only 2 marquee home games
- a 6 out of 8 game and 6 out of 7 game road stretches
I’ll say the Hawks go 1 – 3 vs Miami and Chicago ( hopefully the win comes vs Miami @ home on TNT ) . . . and go 13 – 5 vs everybody else.
If we win 3 games vs Miami and Chicago, you’d think that would give this team extreme confidence to take care of business vs the lower teams. But I can see the Hawks dropping one or two of those home games vs the lower teams, seeing that the energy at Philips Arena will be low for those games.
Prediction
LOW – Hawks have chemistry issues with new bench, leading to a few losses ( 11 – 11 )
MIDDLE – Hawks take care of business, pull off a few upsets, and lose to a few lesser teams ( 14 – 8 )
HIGH – Hawks play like world beaters, go undefeated at home, and only drop a few road games ( 17 – 5 )

Jamal vs the new guys:
Jamal was decent from 3 point range (hot/cold), dangerous on the drive n’ pop (one of his best moves), occasionally worked the pick n’ roll effectively (when he put his mind to it, he could make plays for others), drew fouls at a decent pace and when he drove to the rack he was usually OK (missed many more lay ups than people remember).
V-Rad is a career .38 from 3 point land. It is safe to say that if shoots at this clip, we will be well served.
If we sign Stack, we have a guy who has a very good drive and pop midrange game.
In McGrady we have a guy who – in theory – can post up and dish or drive and dish making plays for others from the SG/SF slots (or even as a big PG).
The above means that apart from the driving skills that Jamal brings to the table (which is not the biggest part of the game) and the ability to draw fouls we should have – by committee – most of his contribution well covered.
And the driving to the rack and the drawing of fouls will be done by Teague, which is something that he should start to excel at, just like he showed against CHI (my only concern is if he is durable and can withstand the hammering).
We cannot expect anything relevant from a defensive point of view with Rad (who rebounds poorly for his size) and Stack on the floor but apparently McGrady last year made strides as a more complete player (very good rebounding numbers in crunch time), so there we should also have at least a marginal improvement.

From MC:
The stat geek inside of me immediately opened his smart mouth: “But better to take 3s when you have a 49.7 effective field-goal percentage, and make long 2s at a 39-percent clip.” Sometimes that stat geek is no fun.
**********************
LOL . . don’t get me started on how the eFG% lies to people, especially when that eFG% is relatively low. I’ve had many arguments over this, and have been called crazy and ignorant because of my belief.
Josh Smith having a 49.7 eFG% from three is NOT GOOD. A 50% eFG from three point range = 33% actual three point shooting. That’s not good shooting. I’d much rather see Smith take the shot he’ll make 2 out of every 5 times, than the shot he’ll make 2 out of every 6 times.
Joe Johnson had a 44.6% eFG% from three during the regular season last year. That equals an actual 3 point percentage of 29.7%. So would you suggest that JJ rather take a three last year, than a long two, in which he shot 39% from . . just because he has a higher eFG% from three?
Not me. JJ as so schizophrenic from three last year, that I was wishing that he’d abandon the shot altogether at times. He was hot and cold from that range all year, until the playoffs, in which he did shoot a little more consistent from deep.
If you agree with the eFG ( which really only pertains to three point shooting ) . . that’s cool. I know that i’m in the minority with my opinion.
All i know is that it comes a certain point in which the eFG creates a perception that shooters are better than what they really are. On a possession by possession basis, I’d much rather see a player take a shot he has a better chance of making, than simply going by what the eFG of that shot is if he makes it.
A 33% three point shooter is more than likely streaky as hell. In a typical 12 shot span, a 33% three point shooter is likely to make two in a row . . . miss about 8 or 9 in a row, then hit one or two more shots, to get to that 33% mark.
A shooter like that is a potential game killer, because he’ll shoot you right out of the game, before he’ll hit a few.
Huh?

Josh and Al are about the same height yet Al has outrebounded him every year he was drafted. Can’t question his toughness, if anything, Josh needs to get in the paint to help out on the glass. Hawks were ranked 28th in rebounding last season. TWENTY EIGHTH. Also, in that Chicago series, Al was guarded but Noah and Asik – too legit defenders, was Josh was guarded by Carlos Boozer – arguably the worst defensive PF in the league. Who do you expect to have a better series? Duh.

LOL @ Vava . . . no arguments here man about jamal. i’ve long cursed at jamal for jacking up threes, when he shot a whopping 45% on long 2s.
JUst to put that in perspective, that would rank Jamal FIFTH amongst SGs that played at least 25 minutes a game. Jason Terry led the league amongst SGs at 47%.
Jamal was an ELITE shooter from 16 – 23 feet . . . but took just as many threes ( where he had an eFG% of 51.2% . . . or 34% actual 3 point shooting ) than long 2’s.
It’s a reason why players in the 80s shot much better from the perimeter, than these guys today. Even deadly shooters like Larry Bird only took about 2 or 3 threes a game. But he lived on the low block and would kill people from mid-range.

Yeah, Jamal’s best asset are his long 2’s off a short dribble to get the defender on his eels – different in style but similarly effective as Cassell’s with his drive left and pull.
Unfortunately, Jamal – like so many players like for instance Smoove – is so much in love with himself that he does not bother to improve his decision making based on FACTS instead of adrenaline rushes.
How many good looks from 3 point land didn’t he miss last season trying to coax the defenders and the refs into 4-point plays instead of simply shooting the rock?

That’s the difference between being good and great. Miami, Boston, and Chicago all play great defense.
If the Hawks play top 10 defense I can see them as the 2nd seed in the East.
Also, Drew the line up with Marvin as the starting SF is not working. Please give Zaza a shot (JJ,Josh,Teague, Al, & Zaza) should be your starters. I bet they don’t get out rebounded like last year.

I love how Kamen has suddenly become the answer to all the organization’s problems. The guy is a middle of the road player when healthy and he isn’t healthy very often. If you watch him play, he is nothing special. I would not trade anyone for him. If Kamen were a free agent, might be worth a shot (at the right price). But, I would never give up anything just to get Chris Kamen back in return. I’ll take my chances with the guys we have.

Hawks are stuck without paying the tax.
Outside of a trade, current possibilities only include signing an undrafted free agent (like Wannamaker), or cutting one of our non-guaranteed contracts (Rolle???), and signing a veteran minimum contract.
If you talk trades, you have to consider that the Hawks have $61M committed to six players next year (Teague, Johnson, Williams, Smith, Horford, and Pachulia). We wil have $9M to sign a minimum of six players plus our first round pick. So trading Hinrich for a player with a contract beyond this year is not likely to happen.
We’ll have the amnesty right in our back pocket, but I don’t see this ownership writing a big check just so Joe or Marvin can go play for another team.
Bottom line, either Joe or Marvin must be traded within the next year for some salary relief, and likely little else.

Until I actually see improvement out of this team on the floor, you have to predict that this team will be 11-11 out of the gate. Last year, they came out, what 6-0? They thought they were on their way.
And yes, Josh and Joe look good…Marvin is standing straight up I hear, and Jeff gets the ball in Game 1.
I would like nothing more than Jeff to be the difference maker for this team, but I will stand to the side and wait to see how we play with the same players in the same system for another year.
Confidence or not, the Hawks aren’t the only guys getting in great shape. The entire league has taken advantage of the extra time off. It could be sloppy basketball on Christmas day and for the first couple of weeks, but its good to be back.
We should have a winning record after 22 games. 6 elite games out of the bunch? I will say we played well against teams we were supposed to beat…..so let me bump it up and say 12-10 at the end of January.
I can say I am anxious to see Jeff and T-Mac to see how they fit with the guys who are used to doing things their way. I don’t know if we’ll miss JC1, but we will find out early. This bench has to produce this year.
Looks like Pape Sy is going to get his shot at the minutes this year.

43 wins. I don’t know how it will happen, but they will win 43 games in this short season (assuming reasonable health and an adequate replacement for Hinrich). Good to read that Pape Sy is performing well, I still don’t like the idea of him being the back-up PG for even a handful of games, I’d prefer if he could be the designated wing defender for 8-10 minutes/game. If Stack joins the team, then conceivably TMac can be more of a point forward with Stack, Vlad and Zaza as the primary recipients of his passes. But if Teague twists an ankle, we’re screwed. An adequate replacement for Hinrich, where’s Tyronn Lue (just kidding).

It could be sloppy basketball on Christmas day and for the first couple of weeks, but its good to be back.
I am expecting to see some record high turnovers in the early part of the season. Even the NFL is down this year. A bunch of tems are winning by simply playing 2.5 good quarters and not being too bad for the other 1.5 quarters. Football is much more of a precision game and the absence of the usual off-season process has hurt the quality. In the NBA, I expect a bunch of passes to be thrown a foot from the right spot (or the player to be a foot away from the right spot, depending on your perspective), as teams rush to get themselves together. Yeah, teams who are the least sloppy may have the biggest advantage early on… not because they are better coached or more talented, but just because they are less sloppy.

Well, we should dominate everyone in the East with maybe Boston being the exception if it was based on familiarity with each other, but Miami will be much more comfortable this year as well.
CHI is guard tough, and rebounding tough. They have guys who attack the glass. Asik and Gibson are probably the best reserve combo in the league, kind of like when Perkins and Powe were doing it for Boston.
Our offensive efficiency has to improve this year….29th last year, Points-in-the-Paint….I bet Jeff himself can improve on those numbers.
For the inside players that we have, and if Marvin would consistently go down inside the lane, we should be able to get those numbers improved.
What it looks like we’ll have is one guy down low, Horford/Collins/Zaza, and we have to get those guys willing to take the shots. They have good size and in a 1/2 court, they are critical to getting a good shot, or getting an additional shot. I like Zaza over Collins offensively, so any Collins buckets are bonus buckets. But he should at least pose a threat to avoid double teams or defenders cheating to help out.
I would hope we are a lesser jump shooting team this year; those percentages just don’t jump out at you as being elite. I think T-Mac will help in that area, with Marvin still being the unknown as to what you’ll get out of him. Shouldn’t we be able to get 20/10 out of our SF slot this year?
I have always wished for Josh to return to the paint on offense. It probably won’t be a common theme again this year.

I think we need a big man, yes but i dont feel like everyone else here. its not such a must especially if dwight goes out west…at VERY VERY BEST case with all the suns and moons aligning we could maybe make it to the confrence championship.. or the nba championship. only to get swept by whoever we play in the west… ahhh. im tired of ownership!!!!

If Sy (believable), Marvin (miracle), and Teague (very believable) are truly the camp standouts so far, we may be in for a very good year.
Ainge is rebuilding Boston nicely for the cash he has to work with. Bass, Green, Wilcox not terrible on the frontline. And of course Rondo at the Point is pretty good also.
That Indy Frontcourt of Hirbbert, West, and Granger looks pretty good also…They may be a team to be reckoned with this season, at least on a certain level.
And Philly looks tough also.
But this may be the season of revolution in the NBA. Except for Kobe, the Clippers have passed the Lakers in every conceivable fashion talent wise. I would not be surprised if the Clippers finished with a better record than the Lakers. And beat them in their opener also.

We give up:
Marvin/Teague/Zaza/#1 draft pick
That’s more than fair at this stage if NO and the NBA really want to move CP3 before the start of the season. We lose some depth, but we improve our starting rotation. Our offense improves as well.

LD is our wildcard. I have no idea how he’s going to Coach. If the past is any indication, he’ll be fired after the first 22 games, but last year may have been a fluke.
That being said, my predictions:
Chicago and the Heat will be seeds 1 and 2 in the East. The Heat probably being #1.
Philly as the #3 seed – especially if Brand holds up and they get Hawes back. Their 1-3 spots are loaded.
ATL #4 – I believe
Indy #5
Orlando #6 – Dwight, Jameer, J Richardson, Big Baby, Anderson, Hedo – they have too much talent to fall very far.
#7 – Boston – they kinda fall apart this season, but still dangerous
#8 – NY Knicks
I think the Bucks may challenge for a spot as well
Western Conference
# 1 – Thunder – If Westbrook and Durant can stay cool with each other. And Perkins can stay healthy. They may be ready to beast it.
#2 – Memphis
#3 – Clippers
#4 – Dallas
#5 – Lakers
#6 – Houston
#7 – San Antonio
#8 – I’ll go with Utah, but it could be one of several teams. Their frontline is so deep and they have decent PG’s they may give some teams so problems. But really Phoenix, GSW, Denver, Portland – they could have a real battle for those last spots in the West.
Denver because of George Karl and nothing else really, unless Nene comes back.
I see this as the year of Revolution in the NBA – Some teams on the rise that haven’t been before in a long time.
Finals – Bulls versus OKC, with the OKC winning.

According to a report I heard last night from David Aldridge, the League wants the Hornets to get as many rookie contracts (from really good rookies) and draft picks as possible. Considering the Hornets are up for sale, think of it as how you would want to make a house more sellable. Most owners would prefer a team with a fair amount of growing and inexpensive talent that they can either sign to a long-term deal when their contract is up of use as trade assets. Same thing with draft picks. If that is the case, the Hawks don’t have those types of assets, certainly not like the Clippers.

Haha we don’t start him because he stood up to Las Vegas Larry… and Vegas has so little credibility as an NBA coach that he can’t have anybody discrediting him. Any other coach would start Zaza. Vegas will start Collins.
PS Kwame for 7 mil one season deal… wasn’t the bargain I was hoping for. Would have been last year if we wrapped him up for a multi year contract just over the veterans’s minimum.. coulda.. shoulda..

Marvin Williams was just a “solid” role player before Jamal, got to the line more hit a higher percentage.
Doesnt mean he was creating more or posting up. In short playing him and Smith together was not better than Smith as a Power 3 with a taller shooter at PF. Marv has not lived up to his draft # ever. He just hit corner shots at a higher rate.

I don’t think the Hornets will find a better deal (for the long term) than what the Clippers will offer, especially when you take into account that CP3 will only commit to staying 2 years with a handful of places (LA, Knicks included).
I would take Eric Gordon, Kaman’s expiring contract, Bledsoe and Minny’s unprotected 1st round pick. The Clippers can keep Aminu.
N.O. gets a starting SG in Gordon, a backup PG in Bledsoe, a starting center (although he would back Okafor up) who could also be traded since he has a $12 mil expiring contract, and probably a top 10 pick in a deep draft. What more does Stern expect?

DeAndre Jordan averaged 7 pts, 7 rebs, and 2 blocks in only 26 minutes. If he plays 36 minutes per game, he should be able to average 10 pts, 10 rebs, and 3 blocks per game. And based on those projections, I can see why they would give him $11 mil per.

This is the first example I have seen of the new CBA actually limiting someone’s salary. Can someone please explain to me why the Hawks dont understand the importance of interior defense and rebounding? I love Al but he is crying out telling the front office to go and land a center to fill that roll. And I agree with him. Insert Nene, Dalembert at Center Horford/Josh at PF, Josh/Vlad/Marvin and SF, Joe/Mcgrady/ and SG and Teague at PG. Trade Hinrinch for a pick and move that salary like the Lakers did and go get a big man please!! I like Zaza as a back up but twin needs to go elsewhere. Najeh,
Yes. I know. Zaza started the season playing like rubbish, but the fact is that LD miss managed his assets and it took time for Zaza to regain his confidence.
He is far from perfect: his 6′11 frame is negated by the fact that his vertical is on or around 3” but his scrappiness is valuable on any team.
My theory on Zaza is that his minutes should be carefully managed to fit the following criteria, but he should get an average of 25/27 minutes per game:
1. Always have a shot-blocker playing alongside him;
2. Give him more touches, since his shot is not that bad when his confidence levels are high (and he gets to the line at an excellent pace);
3. Make sure that he is not put on the court only with scrubs: like most average players, his play greatly benefits from being around with better players (hence, rotations are so important);

I will be honest with you, I think that Josh Smith needs to humble himself. He needs to understand that in Order to when a Championship that his Game on the Court has to be more of a silent but deadly one. Stop the talk, stop acting like a kid like Lebron does and understand you can lead without having the title in the lime light. He is no longer a spring chicken any longer; develop your game. I think the McGrady and Stackhouse will help him understand that they where just like him very athletic. Lebron went to Magic and Olajuwain for that in the paint game which he was lacking. Listen Josh, Think in order to be that threat again look to see who is on the court and that is how you change to fit if you need to be a grbage man be that (athletics) If you need to make your other members of the team shine do that. Josh think of a ring it takes a team. Stop thinking NBA glamour and think Hunger college. We have a winning team the veterans will add the gel to that team. I would put the Hawks up against any team and know with the right cohesion that is championship all day. Josh work on your post moves, your left handed that will make you hard to stop and look for teammates on the double team. Josh look back at the reason you wanted to pick up that ball, you loved the game. Josh get that back. Joe you are that leader speak, Al pound make them say wow he moves bodies around. Teague you are that PG we have been missing speed and hunger make them come to you and dish or respect your game. Coach let your team know you are there for them respect their game but tune it and be honest about what is needed to guide this city. McGrady get with Joe and work on what you see from the team. Stackhouse you and Josh have alot in common. Vets educate the young end your careers with a ring. Josh love what you have done for the city but understand if you don’t get it done this year you will be the first to go because your need to be the star of the team and forcing it when not needed has cost the team. I think if you are traded you will go for a functional center and role playing forward such as Maggette, R. Lewis, Granger, even Kevin Garnett. it is decision time the success of the team is the overall goal. josh if you can not learn to be a role player at times and learn when to step up, a player that can hold 10 to 20 points a game and making the players around better from someone else will do. It is better than you forcing a 25 points a game and not making your teammates better and put them in a position to score. Guys looking forward

Not bashing him at all. Just stating the facts. He has stayed hurt, since he has been a Hawk. I hate to inform you of this, but recovering from a torn labrum in not easy at all. I don’t look for much contribution from his this year at all. It’s funny how Kirk is so solid, and he was great in the Orlando series, but you still fail to understand that Jamal is the reason we won that series. No Jamal in that series, we lose. Bottom line is at this point in his career, Kirk is injury prone, and this is the last year of his deal. He won’t provide much to this team at all.

The Indiana Pacers have extended a two-year offer worth $10 million to Atlanta Hawks free agent Jamal Crawford that would enable Crawford to return to free agency next summer, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.
The offer to Crawford, which would pay him $5 million annually, includes an opt-out after the first year to allow Crawford to join the free agent class of 2012 if he chooses.
The Wolves could get into the bidding for Crawford if they choose to release a veteran through amnesty — the candidates include Luke Ridnour, Brad Miller or Martell Webster — to create the needed salary-cap space..
If I was a professional athlete, I always wonder if I would put more focus on winning or location this late in my career, or would it still be about the money.
Jamal has made tons of money in his career, so if he saved or invested wisely, there is no reason to go to Minny.

Sheesh….yes, I know there is going to be a language barrier and attitude barrier between old school and today’s players…but can’t we get some quotes talking about I’m not helping the team enough or I need to work harder on my game/weaknesses. It always seems to be a mental battle with these guys.
I know Smoove is still considered young, but he’s considered a captain and a 7 year vet! Come on man!

Smith said he never asked to be traded. But he would not have screamed if it had happened.
Yet, when the Hawks opened the gym following the NBA lockout, guess who was the first player to show up? Guess who lost 25 pounds this summer, changing his workouts, changing his diet, running in the Hollywood hills?
Guess who worked on his mid-range jumper — from 16 feet, not Neptune — and was determined to get faster and quicker so he could excel against the league’s small forwards, after seeing a lot of time at the 3-spot in the playoffs?
Josh Smith showed up to training camp a different guy. He weighs 225, the lightest he has been since turning pro in 2004. After only a few days of drills, coach Larry Drew said, “He’s getting off his feet a lot quicker, getting to the rim and exploding, even more than he has in the past.”

That REALLY means that he shot 33.1% from three ( 51 – 154 ).
That’s easily a CAREER HIGH for Smith, by the way.
For his career, Josh Smith has attempted 632 threes, and made them at a 28.2% clip.

Josh Smith needs to be “inside”. Trade Horford for a stretch 4 and a center.
Al Horford needs to be “inside”. Trade Smith for Marvins replacement and a center.
Smith is more dynamic than Horford and Horfords value comes from rebounding and passing to shooters.
Joe Johnson got doubled plenty of times in the playoffs but then he had to pass to Jason Collins, Josh Smith, or Al Horford.
Horford at this point is stuck at center and wed be well served trading him for a center with size and toughness. + stretch four to be that shooter or post up option for Joe Johnson.
A Team) 7′0 BOGUT. 7′0 LEUER. 6′8 Smith
OR
B Team) 6′10 HORFORD. 6′10 Space Cadet Radmanovic. 6′8 Smith
Trade Horford for any 7 foot center better than Jason Collins and a stretch 4 please!

I agree trade Horford. He has no back to the basket game and he’s not a shot blocker like Josh. Trade him while you can get something for him and before you have to ree him up.

Hinrich was cleared to shoot today. Don’t know if that is good or bad considering he is the 2nd highest payed guard on the team and with the cheap thinking of the Hawks they may start him just for that reason when he is no more than I backup that can’t be counted on and really adds nothing to the team offensively and is not the stud some pretend defensively.
On the other hand, maybe he comes back soon and it is obvious he is not what we need and Sund makes the trade. Kirk, Zaza, and a 2nd for Kaman.

Horford should garner Bogut (low potential because of arm) and Leuer with his 35mpg and jumpshooting and IQ he can provide much leadership to a rebuilding team like Milwaukee.
The key however is a perimeter player who can help shooting AND our defense.
Imagine Jamal Crawford who can defend box out PFs and rebound and trail as a PF. We need that size and offensive skill to make the offense of inside players work.
Hawks upgrade Perimeter size and let Smith play inside
Leuer > Vlad > Marvin > Jamal
“He’s a four that can really stretch the defense,” Drew said. “I did a lot of homework on him. With Joe’s ability to force double teams, having that four that can go out there and stretch it, it gives you an added weapon. Tracy is a really good passer and you put him with the ball in position where he can operate, teams have to collapse their defenses on him [too]. With [STRETCH 4], he’s a guy that lives at the 3-point line.”
Notice he doesnt say Smith Dalembert or Thabeet or Horford lives at the 3 point line. Horford makes no 3 point plays, Smith can drive for crucial high-profile 3 point plays hoop and harm but not if you play (Smith, Horford, and another center). No perimeter plaer there forces coach to play Smith outside.
Smith + Vlad + Horford is treading water. We know the formula is Smith inside + PF shooter + defensive center. Smith dropping 30 lbs, stop treading water. Defensive anchor is there. Get Bogut Lets be leaders in the East.

I would have preferred that the Hawks signed TMac to a 2yr contract with a team option for the 2nd yr. If he plays well this season then the Hawks would have to bid on his services next season along with other teams and we already know the Hawks are financially challenge….

AJ,
There is a disturbing pattern with Josh in the playoffs too (from behind the arc).
In the ’07-’08 playoffs, Josh went 3-18, .17%.
In the ’08-’09 playoffs, Josh went 2-15, 13%
In the ’09-’10 playoffs, Josh went 2-6, 33%.
In the ’10-’11 playoffs, Josh went 3-24, for 13%.
So for his playoff career, Josh is 10-63 from 3, 16%. Why he insists on shooting them in the playoffs, I dont know.

I’m tracking you, I see the logic and the cohesion. The in/out game is not as effective as the triangle in my opinion. Josh dropping 25 lbs while welcome, will also take away from his muscle ability down low, I look for more finesse and intensity out of Smith who will certainly play well with T mac.
I’m not so optimistic about Big 6′10″ Al. I don’t see his attitude for the post and he doesn’t have the tools to be an impact offensively, hes too mechanical and predictable. He did nothing in the off season to change my view.
This “core” peaked under Woody who use the young guys running theme to get about as far as you can get, but has no where to go in an half court defensive struggle of the advance rounds of the playoffs. It shored up the hawks need for a center. More than any thing the hawks realized they would not get any further with out a legit 5. In fact every body realized that the year before Woody’s 53 win season.
Drew is not the brightest bulb in the room. Wed lose even if we had all the right pieces because Drew just does not have what it take to advance in the play offs. Hes not an X/O type and has a hard time making adjustments plus he doesn’t know how to get the most out of his players. If he keeps bowing down Al instead of getting in his face we will be out in the first round.
Its time to break up this “core”
Build around Josh and JJ use the others to build a strong front court to compete in the late rounds and add the role pieces. With JJ and Josh you will be in the playoffs, for sure. How far you get is up to the coach and the front line.

“Another option now available to the Suns would be trading Nash to the Atlanta Hawks for Al Horford (the deal would have to wait until after Jan. 15). Any team could use an All-Star big man like Horford. And how about Nash joining the perpetually point guard-deficient Hawks to throw alley-oops to Josh Smith? (And, um Smith swatting away any opponents who get past Nash and into the paint?) Or Nash driving and kicking to Joe Johnson the way he used to in Phoenix? It could happen, with only Nash and Horford having to change jerseys. It wouldn’t be so easy under the old rules. Because Horford’s salary jumped more than 20 percent (to $12 million) this season and he would have been considered a base-year compensation player and his value for trade purposes would have been only 50 percent of his salary, or $6 million, not nearly enough to compensate for Nash. Now that rule has been wiped out, so this deal could be done.”
