Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 4
8:57 pm December 12, 2011, by Michael Cunningham

Media Day (David Tulis/AJC Special)
Notes and quotes gathered at Hawks media day while realizing I won’t see 70 percent of these people for the rest of the season. . . .
- I haven’t been in the locker room yet but Larry Drew said he’s put up a new sign that reads: “No excuses.” “I told them there are no more excuses at this point of our careers,” Drew said. “It’s time to take the next step.
- That’s a good point. Hawks players and coaches can wish they had more pieces–nearly every team in the league does–but if this is the team they are going to have, then this is who is going to have to get it done. It’s not as if they don’t have players or experience.
- “In order for us to become champs in this league we are all going to have to step our game up at some point,” Joe Johnson said. “We can’t blame it on ‘what we need.’ We can get it done with this group that we’ve got. We just have to believe it.”
- Drew said Tracy McGrady and Jerry Stackhouse can provide the kind of leadership the Hawks have lacked: “Both guys have been at this long enough, they are not afraid to step on toes. That is one of the most important ingredients for veteran leadership. Irregardless of being here a short time, they are not afraid to voice their opinion, step on toes and call guys out. We haven’t had that in the past.”
- Drew said J.J. needs to do more, too: “He knows the rest of the guys look up to him. He’s always been a leader by example, now we really need him to step up and really be more vocal. Don’t hold it in. We are a team that has been together for a while now and it’s time to turn the corner. To do that, we need him to step up and be more vocal.”
- The biggest drop-off in J.J.’s numbers last season came at the 3-point line. I asked him if his injured elbow contributed to that: “I’m a guy who never makes excuses. I had a down year last year and I’m look forward to bouncing back. I don’t blame my elbow or none of that. I am just going to play the game the way I know how and contribute the best way I can.”
- Tracy McGrady was pretty upfront about where he’s at in his career: “I had some injuries that set me back for two years but I was fortunate to bounce back from those. I’m not a 30-point scorer anymore but I can still play the game.”
- Josh Smith told AJC wise guy Jeff Schultz that he’s worked on his mid-range game but wouldn’t be taking as many 3-pointers: “You’re going to see less of that from me.”
- The stat geek inside of me immediately opened his smart mouth: “But better to take 3s when you have a 49.7 effective field-goal percentage, and make long 2s at a 39-percent clip.” Sometimes that stat geek is no fun.
- Vladimir Radmanovich put on his Hawks jersey for the first time. “Everybody knows I am a 3-point shooter and I am a guy that stretches the offense,” he said. “I am going to try to do that and help guys get more space down in the paint to operate.”
- I told him I noticed he had pretty good blocks and steals rates last season. He attributed it to dropping weight last season: “Not having so much weight gives me the opportunity to be quicker and lighter and I think that helped me last year in terms of steals and blocks. There are some advantages to it and some disadvantages to it. You have to pick your poison.
- Everyone wanted to know if the Jeff Teague we saw against the Bulls is the same one we are going to see this season. The consensus was the Teague is playing as if he intends to back that up.
- Drew: “Looks like he’s had a really good offseason. Judging by the first practices he’s really playing at a high level. His speed and quickness just makes us a totally different team. I expect him to take the bull by the horns. I don’t want him to have to wait on anybody. Let’s force the other guys to keep up with him. He’s the type of player that can impact the game with his speed and quickness.”
- Joe: “I see him picking up right where he left out. I told Jeff coming in to this year he has to be that leader on the court where guys really can trust him. I’ve seen the work he put in over the summer, working on his jump shot and penetrating and making plays for guys. We are going to need him to do it. He’s a great defender, a guy who loves to get in the passing lanes. When he turns that corner, the Atlanta Hawks are going to turn that corner as well.”
- J.J. has noticed what I’ve noticed: Teague is carrying himself differently now. “You can see how he communicates, his body language, knowing that he is going to have the rock in his hand making decisions.”
- There also were some questions about how the Hawks would replace Jamal Crawford’s scoring. “I’m going to step my game up,” J.J. said. “Josh is going to step his up, Al his going to step his up. I think [we do it] collectively as a team. It’s not just going to be one guy. I think we are going to have to do something to pick up the slack.”
- “We are going to have to depend on me and Marvin and Al and Teague to fill that void that Jamal left,” Josh said.
- Kirk Hinrich said he hasn’t been cleared to run yet so he’s trying to stay in shape by getting on the bike and elliptical machine. “It’s just frustrating not to be able to play,” he said.
- The Clippers claimed Chauncey Billups.

Some commentaries on latest Hawks’ videos/interviews:
1. Zaza loving the bruises and the scratches, saying “that the typical Zaza look”…
And there are people that don’t like this guy?? Really??
Also: Rad = typical european = pick ‘n pop.
2. Teague SOUNDS different. Last year you could barely listen to his voice and he looked away.
This year he looks “grown up”:
3. Stack is actually looking physically very very fit and he kind of sounds like the veteran we need in the locker room.
4. Rad said something interesting = we have a short training camp, a short pre-season and a crunched schedule.
Teams which have been just assembled (with key players just added) should struggle a bit more than our guys who have been playing together for a long time.
BUT, coaching will be even more important to manage minutes and match ups.
That will be our Achilles’ eel IMO…

Hawks Schedule in first 22 games
- 13 road games
- a 5 game in 6 night stretch in the 2nd week of the season
- only 2 marquee home games
- a 6 out of 8 game and 6 out of 7 game road stretches
I’ll say the Hawks go 1 – 3 vs Miami and Chicago ( hopefully the win comes vs Miami @ home on TNT ) . . . and go 13 – 5 vs everybody else.
If we win 3 games vs Miami and Chicago, you’d think that would give this team extreme confidence to take care of business vs the lower teams. But I can see the Hawks dropping one or two of those home games vs the lower teams, seeing that the energy at Philips Arena will be low for those games.
Prediction
LOW – Hawks have chemistry issues with new bench, leading to a few losses ( 11 – 11 )
MIDDLE – Hawks take care of business, pull off a few upsets, and lose to a few lesser teams ( 14 – 8 )
HIGH – Hawks play like world beaters, go undefeated at home, and only drop a few road games ( 17 – 5 )

Jamal vs the new guys:
Jamal was decent from 3 point range (hot/cold), dangerous on the drive n’ pop (one of his best moves), occasionally worked the pick n’ roll effectively (when he put his mind to it, he could make plays for others), drew fouls at a decent pace and when he drove to the rack he was usually OK (missed many more lay ups than people remember).
V-Rad is a career .38 from 3 point land. It is safe to say that if shoots at this clip, we will be well served.
If we sign Stack, we have a guy who has a very good drive and pop midrange game.
In McGrady we have a guy who – in theory – can post up and dish or drive and dish making plays for others from the SG/SF slots (or even as a big PG).
The above means that apart from the driving skills that Jamal brings to the table (which is not the biggest part of the game) and the ability to draw fouls we should have – by committee – most of his contribution well covered.
And the driving to the rack and the drawing of fouls will be done by Teague, which is something that he should start to excel at, just like he showed against CHI (my only concern is if he is durable and can withstand the hammering).
We cannot expect anything relevant from a defensive point of view with Rad (who rebounds poorly for his size) and Stack on the floor but apparently McGrady last year made strides as a more complete player (very good rebounding numbers in crunch time), so there we should also have at least a marginal improvement.

From MC:
The stat geek inside of me immediately opened his smart mouth: “But better to take 3s when you have a 49.7 effective field-goal percentage, and make long 2s at a 39-percent clip.” Sometimes that stat geek is no fun.
**********************
LOL . . don’t get me started on how the eFG% lies to people, especially when that eFG% is relatively low. I’ve had many arguments over this, and have been called crazy and ignorant because of my belief.
Josh Smith having a 49.7 eFG% from three is NOT GOOD. A 50% eFG from three point range = 33% actual three point shooting. That’s not good shooting. I’d much rather see Smith take the shot he’ll make 2 out of every 5 times, than the shot he’ll make 2 out of every 6 times.
Joe Johnson had a 44.6% eFG% from three during the regular season last year. That equals an actual 3 point percentage of 29.7%. So would you suggest that JJ rather take a three last year, than a long two, in which he shot 39% from . . just because he has a higher eFG% from three?
Not me. JJ as so schizophrenic from three last year, that I was wishing that he’d abandon the shot altogether at times. He was hot and cold from that range all year, until the playoffs, in which he did shoot a little more consistent from deep.
If you agree with the eFG ( which really only pertains to three point shooting ) . . that’s cool. I know that i’m in the minority with my opinion.
All i know is that it comes a certain point in which the eFG creates a perception that shooters are better than what they really are. On a possession by possession basis, I’d much rather see a player take a shot he has a better chance of making, than simply going by what the eFG of that shot is if he makes it.
A 33% three point shooter is more than likely streaky as hell. In a typical 12 shot span, a 33% three point shooter is likely to make two in a row . . . miss about 8 or 9 in a row, then hit one or two more shots, to get to that 33% mark.
A shooter like that is a potential game killer, because he’ll shoot you right out of the game, before he’ll hit a few.
Huh?

Josh and Al are about the same height yet Al has outrebounded him every year he was drafted. Can’t question his toughness, if anything, Josh needs to get in the paint to help out on the glass. Hawks were ranked 28th in rebounding last season. TWENTY EIGHTH. Also, in that Chicago series, Al was guarded but Noah and Asik – too legit defenders, was Josh was guarded by Carlos Boozer – arguably the worst defensive PF in the league. Who do you expect to have a better series? Duh.

LOL @ Vava . . . no arguments here man about jamal. i’ve long cursed at jamal for jacking up threes, when he shot a whopping 45% on long 2s.
JUst to put that in perspective, that would rank Jamal FIFTH amongst SGs that played at least 25 minutes a game. Jason Terry led the league amongst SGs at 47%.
Jamal was an ELITE shooter from 16 – 23 feet . . . but took just as many threes ( where he had an eFG% of 51.2% . . . or 34% actual 3 point shooting ) than long 2’s.
It’s a reason why players in the 80s shot much better from the perimeter, than these guys today. Even deadly shooters like Larry Bird only took about 2 or 3 threes a game. But he lived on the low block and would kill people from mid-range.

Around the league;
Pacers, who are already under the cap, have used their amnesty on James Posey.
Marc Gasol signs max offer with Memphis. 4 years, $58 mil. And Clippers matched the offer to DeAnder Jordan, 4 years, $43 mil. The Clippers have to trade Kaman this year. Otherwise, they have $33 mil tied up in their centers.

northcyde,
Yeah, Jamal’s best asset are his long 2’s off a short dribble to get the defender on his eels – different in style but similarly effective as Cassell’s with his drive left and pull.
Unfortunately, Jamal – like so many players like for instance Smoove – is so much in love with himself that he does not bother to improve his decision making based on FACTS instead of adrenaline rushes.
How many good looks from 3 point land didn’t he miss last season trying to coax the defenders and the refs into 4-point plays instead of simply shooting the rock?

How much emphasis is being placed on defense in training camp?
That’s the difference between being good and great. Miami, Boston, and Chicago all play great defense.
If the Hawks play top 10 defense I can see them as the 2nd seed in the East.
Also, Drew the line up with Marvin as the starting SF is not working. Please give Zaza a shot (JJ,Josh,Teague, Al, & Zaza) should be your starters. I bet they don’t get out rebounded like last year.
Hinrich, Marvin, T-Mac, & Collins gives you a very deep rotation.

I love how Kamen has suddenly become the answer to all the organization’s problems. The guy is a middle of the road player when healthy and he isn’t healthy very often. If you watch him play, he is nothing special. I would not trade anyone for him. If Kamen were a free agent, might be worth a shot (at the right price). But, I would never give up anything just to get Chris Kamen back in return. I’ll take my chances with the guys we have.

Hawks are stuck without paying the tax.
Outside of a trade, current possibilities only include signing an undrafted free agent (like Wannamaker), or cutting one of our non-guaranteed contracts (Rolle???), and signing a veteran minimum contract.
If you talk trades, you have to consider that the Hawks have $61M committed to six players next year (Teague, Johnson, Williams, Smith, Horford, and Pachulia). We wil have $9M to sign a minimum of six players plus our first round pick. So trading Hinrich for a player with a contract beyond this year is not likely to happen.
We’ll have the amnesty right in our back pocket, but I don’t see this ownership writing a big check just so Joe or Marvin can go play for another team.
Bottom line, either Joe or Marvin must be traded within the next year for some salary relief, and likely little else.

Until I actually see improvement out of this team on the floor, you have to predict that this team will be 11-11 out of the gate. Last year, they came out, what 6-0? They thought they were on their way.
And yes, Josh and Joe look good…Marvin is standing straight up I hear, and Jeff gets the ball in Game 1.
I would like nothing more than Jeff to be the difference maker for this team, but I will stand to the side and wait to see how we play with the same players in the same system for another year.
Confidence or not, the Hawks aren’t the only guys getting in great shape. The entire league has taken advantage of the extra time off. It could be sloppy basketball on Christmas day and for the first couple of weeks, but its good to be back.
We should have a winning record after 22 games. 6 elite games out of the bunch? I will say we played well against teams we were supposed to beat…..so let me bump it up and say 12-10 at the end of January.
I can say I am anxious to see Jeff and T-Mac to see how they fit with the guys who are used to doing things their way. I don’t know if we’ll miss JC1, but we will find out early. This bench has to produce this year.
Looks like Pape Sy is going to get his shot at the minutes this year.

43 wins. I don’t know how it will happen, but they will win 43 games in this short season (assuming reasonable health and an adequate replacement for Hinrich). Good to read that Pape Sy is performing well, I still don’t like the idea of him being the back-up PG for even a handful of games, I’d prefer if he could be the designated wing defender for 8-10 minutes/game. If Stack joins the team, then conceivably TMac can be more of a point forward with Stack, Vlad and Zaza as the primary recipients of his passes. But if Teague twists an ankle, we’re screwed. An adequate replacement for Hinrich, where’s Tyronn Lue (just kidding).

It could be sloppy basketball on Christmas day and for the first couple of weeks, but its good to be back.
I am expecting to see some record high turnovers in the early part of the season. Even the NFL is down this year. A bunch of tems are winning by simply playing 2.5 good quarters and not being too bad for the other 1.5 quarters. Football is much more of a precision game and the absence of the usual off-season process has hurt the quality. In the NBA, I expect a bunch of passes to be thrown a foot from the right spot (or the player to be a foot away from the right spot, depending on your perspective), as teams rush to get themselves together. Yeah, teams who are the least sloppy may have the biggest advantage early on… not because they are better coached or more talented, but just because they are less sloppy.

Well, we should dominate everyone in the East with maybe Boston being the exception if it was based on familiarity with each other, but Miami will be much more comfortable this year as well.
CHI is guard tough, and rebounding tough. They have guys who attack the glass. Asik and Gibson are probably the best reserve combo in the league, kind of like when Perkins and Powe were doing it for Boston.
Our offensive efficiency has to improve this year….29th last year, Points-in-the-Paint….I bet Jeff himself can improve on those numbers.
For the inside players that we have, and if Marvin would consistently go down inside the lane, we should be able to get those numbers improved.
What it looks like we’ll have is one guy down low, Horford/Collins/Zaza, and we have to get those guys willing to take the shots. They have good size and in a 1/2 court, they are critical to getting a good shot, or getting an additional shot. I like Zaza over Collins offensively, so any Collins buckets are bonus buckets. But he should at least pose a threat to avoid double teams or defenders cheating to help out.
I would hope we are a lesser jump shooting team this year; those percentages just don’t jump out at you as being elite. I think T-Mac will help in that area, with Marvin still being the unknown as to what you’ll get out of him. Shouldn’t we be able to get 20/10 out of our SF slot this year?
I have always wished for Josh to return to the paint on offense. It probably won’t be a common theme again this year.

I mean this comment with my heart.. Rick i will never buy a freaking ticket until you show some type of effort in making the hawks a better team.. so many moves could have been done. but all you did was sign tmac and vlad, no i will be honest i think there both good signs but neither is a get over the hump kinda sign.. you could have shopped Jamal, did you no, you could have have shopped marvin for anybody to be honest, but were content with being a slightly above average team.. this has been the hawks for 20 years i am losing freaking patients.. I think we need a big man, yes but i dont feel like everyone else here. its not such a must especially if dwight goes out west…at VERY VERY BEST case with all the suns and moons aligning we could maybe make it to the confrence championship.. or the nba championship. only to get swept by whoever we play in the west… ahhh. im tired of ownership!!!!

If Sy (believable), Marvin (miracle), and Teague (very believable) are truly the camp standouts so far, we may be in for a very good year.
Ainge is rebuilding Boston nicely for the cash he has to work with. Bass, Green, Wilcox not terrible on the frontline. And of course Rondo at the Point is pretty good also.
That Indy Frontcourt of Hirbbert, West, and Granger looks pretty good also…They may be a team to be reckoned with this season, at least on a certain level.
And Philly looks tough also.
But this may be the season of revolution in the NBA. Except for Kobe, the Clippers have passed the Lakers in every conceivable fashion talent wise. I would not be surprised if the Clippers finished with a better record than the Lakers. And beat them in their opener also.

I’m going to bring a lot to the table regardless of what a lot of people think and what they saw last season. It will definitely be a new player that they see on the basketball court”- Mcgrady
I am so excited
