Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 3
7:18 pm December 11, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Notes gathered while sleepwalking and dreaming about a sandwich. . . .
- Rick Sund said the Hawks are interested in Gilbert Arenas and Chauncey Billups if they clear amnesty waivers. If teams with cap space don’t bid on those players by tonight’s deadline, they become free agents. (Note: Arenas already has cleared waivers, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, and wants to join up Dwight Howard.)
- Asked about acquiring another center, Sund said:”I like our ‘bigs.’ We’ve got so many players that are versatile. Larry [Drew] is comfortable using those guys in different position.”
- Billups isn’t a pure point guard but has great value for the Hawks because he can play the 2, is a big-time shotmaker and adds leadership and toughness. He’s also really, really good at doing something the Hawks were really, really bad at doing last season: getting to the free-throw line.
- The Hawks still have no plans to use their amnesty clause this season.
- Al Horford said he and fellow captains Josh Smith and Joe Johnson are still looking for the Hawks to make more moves after they added Tracy McGrady, Jason Collins and Vladimir Radmanovich. “I just hope they give us the opportunity to show something and still play at a high level,” Horford said. “Its’ a shortened season so there will be a lot more games in fewer days. So we need to have a deep team.”
- The feeling among Atlanta’s captains is they don’t want to take a step back after taking Chicago to six games. “You want to build on it,” Horford said. “We need some sort of depth. I think that’s what gave Chicago an edge over us. I think we wore down in the playoffs a little bit. If we are able to get some more pieces, we should be in good shape.”
- The Hawks scrimmaged for the first time today and us media types got to see the tail end. Jeff Teague was smooth and in control and Pape Sy made a couple nice pull-up jumpers.
- Horford on Teague: “I think he’s just more confident as a player. I think the playoffs helped him. I just hope he keeps that edge and confidence and keeps playing hard.”
- The Hawks ended practice with sprints. Teague, Johnson, Smith and Zaza Pachulia were out in front.
- I will say this about Josh: He’s a pro. There’s been no sign of discontent and lots of evidence that he’s focused and working hard. He frequently pulls younger players to the side and points out where they are supposed to do.
- Drew said Josh’s slimmer build doesn’t mean he will play him at power forward less often: “With him losing the weight, I see that he’s got his quickness back that he had when he first got here. He looks a lot faster, a lot quicker, which is a good sign because that’s been a strength of his game is his athleticism.”
- Funny exchange between Josh and assistant Lester Conner during the sprints. Conner: “They are going to be saying, ‘Damn them Hawks get out on the break!” Josh: “They was already saying that.”
- Not to judge a second-round rookie too harshly on his third day, but I don’t see Keith “Kito” Benson as a factor until he gets bigger and more aggressive. “I’m just trying to stay low in the post so I don’t get knocked off position,” he said. “I’m getting used to the stronger players that have played in the league.”
- Kito finds himself on the same floor as guys he once idolized. “[Jerry] Stackhouse was on the Pistons when I was younger so I used to watch him a lot,” he said. “I had the T-Mac shoes and everything.” I had those blue-and-white T-Macs, too.
- Horford on Kito: “He’s very athletic. He’s definitely going to have to work himself in the weight room a little more and get stronger but I like his enthusiasm and his energy. I’ve noticed that he can shoot a little bit in the mid-range area. That’s always good to see.”
- Rookie prospect Brad Wanamaker has yet to practice because FIBA hasn’t yet cleared him after he played in Italy. Wanamaker said an Italian holiday is holding up the paperwork but he hopes to be cleared by tomorrow.
- Atlanta’s $3.6 million trade exception from the Josh Childress deal expires on Dec. 16. Since the Hawks aren’t going to take on more salary than they send out, the exception will expire without being used.

“It just amazes me how all 3 major sports teams in Atlanta seem to put out mediocre talent year end and year out. They are like that girlfriend who is good enough to sleep with, but not good enough to commit to.”
I love it.
They put a mediocre product out and then get mad at the fans for not supporting. Sund if you don’t upgrade the front court I’m staying at home this year.

From ESPN;
The trade as submitted would cost the Clippers guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman and forward Al-Farouq Aminu. It would also include Minnesota’s first-round draft pick in 2012..
The holdup is Hornets want PG Bledsoe in the deal. If the Hornets can get him thrown in, I think it would be a good deal for them, and would definitely help them sell the team. A young All-Star SG in the making (Gordon), a high 1st round pick (Minny will be terrible again), and a $10 mil expiring contract in Kaman.

Jump Shooter,
Its also a fact that players just dont want to come to Atlanta. The Hawks are a bad market overall. When i say that, i mean an organization that has been in existence for over 40 years and they continue to flutter about year after year.
So i dont blame a Billups or a Paul or even a hometown guy like Dwight if they didnt want to come here. I know i wouldnt.

Josh Smith, Teague, Hinrich (expiring $8m) , Zaza, & 1st rd pick for Chris Paul & Emeka Okafor.
ATL starting 5:
PG – Chris Paul
SG – Joe Johnson (rebound year)
SF – Marvin Williams
PF – Al Horford
C – Emeka Okafor
I don’t know if the NBA would do it but the Hawks better have at least offered this. CP3 would make JJ much better & Okafor gives Al the true center (even at 6′10) so he can blossom at the 4. We’d immediately be the 2nd or 3rd best team in the East & right behind the Heat all the way.

I think the center thing is overstated….
“Josh is best suited to be a 6th man on a championship club, a la Lamar Odom. Depending on him to be a reliable SF is asking for trouble.” – Hmmmmmm
This is the TRUTH about the Hawks and needs to said LOUDER. I am not saying Josh isn’t very important but he doesn’t have the skills to play 3 or the size to play 4. If the Hawks started Twin or Zaza we would not here the complants about size.
We needed Josh more when we were starting a defensively challenged player like Bibby but we now have Teague to cut down on penetration. He also would be a dominate player on the 2nd unit and more effective on the “block” against 2nd units.
We have the players we need to win TITLE, we just have to put the in the best position to win.
PS. Dallas went 5 year between finals appearances and won because of an injury prone big man and a back-up PG…..Wow.
Lebron, Carmelo, Amare, D12, DRose and CP3 have the same number of titles as the Josh, Al, or JJ. I think some of you bloggers want a “STAR” more than you want to win, because some of these trades will make the Hawks losers…..I just want to win and winning is good enough for me.

When I speak of getting a legit Center;
I am speaking of a player who has a specific nind-set.
Ben Wallace or Omeka Okafor are not 7 ftrs yet they
are legit Centers.
In all actuallity, D.Howard, is not a 7 ftr, but he is a
legit Center. [-Howard and Okafor are very close in size-]
This is me speaking – not Al !
Al Horford is not a legit center:
*mind-set *body type * wing-span *stand-reach *stand-vert [two feet]
*meanness [not a criticism] *technical skill set *wgt / strength *butt
**(not to mention he’s only 6-8+ & 245)
My point here is not about Al
There are plenty of 7ftrs that are not legit Centers:
ranging from Dirk (SS) to Bargnani (??)
—Now—
When I say we need a legit Big;
I’m speaking of a legit 7ftr who can be these things:
Long (wing-span), or Big & long, rim defender, goal tender,
intimidator, inside scoring threat (low post moves),
low post defender (low center of gravity) Big Butt,
[someone who can not get pushed around]
do all this w/o having to jump at max effort on ea play;
r e standing reach !
—And—
A Rebounder;
defined as:
one who lives to do one thing – Rebound.
one who eats rebounds, one who is mean, nasty,
ornery, the Harvey Dahl of roundball, this man is not nice,
he is not the face of our franchise,
he is not well liked around the league,
the opponents are more interested in guarding their balls
than any other priority when he is around.
This man does not give a ____ ! He wants the ball !
All others are afraid of him. His teammates are scared of him.
He is a little bit nuts.
He is Oakley + Rodman + Mahorn + Reggie Evans + Truck Robinson
+ Maurice Lucas + Dave Cowens (token white guy)
He’s flat out mean.
—So—
Does this mean I don’t like Josh and Al ?
No, not at all.
We need the two above mentioned [big + Rebounder]
to augment our team.
If ‘n we want to contend !
Dad-gummit, if ol’ Sund didn’t piss me off;
when he said “we like our Bigs”.

Please say no to Arenas. If we need anything it’s a quality big.
IMHO Jamal needs to move on. I appreciate his efforts, but it’s time. I’m betting Teague, Joe, Marvin, Josh and Al will love to have his touches. I’m betting Marvin’s numbers will return to where he was prior to Jamal’s arrival. Everyone will improve statistically. Will we miss his offense? Doubtful now that the guys have experience. Will we miss his defense? Absolutely not. I’m one that believes no matter how this shakes out, we’ll improve.
All we need is a servicable big to take the next step.

G’dad,
If I’m the Clippers, I’m trying hard to hold on to Bledsoe. Gordon has the talent to be a perennial all-star when Kobe retires, and Minny’s unprotected 1st round will be a lottery pick in what will be a very deep draft. Bledsoe can be a good backup for CP3.
The irony for the Hornets is they will be in the same situation next offseason if Eric Gordon informs New Orleans that he will not sign his rookie extension. Then what.

The Clippers have more draft picks than the Hawks. That is the problem. Everyone have been stockpiling draft picks, except for the Hawks.
To be honest, I think this is a TERRIBLE deal for the Clippers. As it stands they were going to be holding two lottery draft picks for the deepest draft in recent memories (Maybe Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Melo draft). Paul is one bad fall away from being Brandon Roy. Imagine the Clippers getting Austin Rivers or Curry and another wing prospect, while keeping Gordon! Like I said, bad trade!

Atlanta has spent so much money on their core group of players – Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford – that they were forced to fill out their roster with veterans who were willing to sign minimum contracts such as Tracy McGrady, Jerry Stackhouse and Vladimir Radmanovic. The Hawks will need internal improvement from players like Horford and Jeff Teague if they want to compete at a high level. While many other teams in the East have improved in recent months, Atlanta hasn’t added much help at all.

Although i disagree with what he is saying, part of me agrees. But the key is having guys that can come off the bench and contribute. Last season, they had guys with not much experience playing but this year, it seems to be different.
They guys they currently have dont have to log 20-20 minutes, but they just need to be put in position to score some points and play a little defense.

CP3 helped the games of Tyson Chandler and David West tremendously. And With CP3, the Clippers have a better chance of convincing Blake Griffin to sign his extension next season.

How does the Orlando GM still have a job? Their payroll is almost $100 mil (including Gilbert’s salary), and they are not good enough to win a championship. And to make it worse, the star player has issues with the GM.
“I’ve talked to a lot of guys and they’ve expressed a lot of interest and would come here,” Howard said. “And I’ve expressed that to the correct people, and none of it’s happened.” Offered the chance to respond, Smith countered that he has consulted with Howard on most, if not all, moves made in recent years. Smith also said that he did acquire some of the players Howard had suggested..

With Jamal more than likely gone, who is going to be the back up SG. We already don’t have a SF unless McGrady comes out of his injury life and surprise everyone. So basically we have no backup SG, starting SF nor a true Center. Man lets pray that Teague and Josh can become the players that we all know they can be. Maybe if we speak very good of McGrady he will come out a better player.

In 3 seasons, his career avg is 18, 3 and 3. Last season, he averaged 22, 4 and 3. And he is just going into his 4th year, so there is still room for improvement, especially considering he is only 22.

Didn’t we hear how disappoointed D12 was when Arenas was let go? Didn’t we hear that Arenas is going wherever D12 goes? Just a thought…I am not here even thinking Sund has that much creativity in him. See what the Nets are leveraging under their potential Russina presidential hopeful Prokhorov. That just seems bizarre for that to happen and own a NBA franchise.

Rufus, you are more optimistic than I have ever read here. But, remember what Tyson Chandler did last year? The Heat couldn’t match that, even if it took Dirk to be at his best. You won’t see Joe stepping up like Kobe or Paul Pierce for us, and that is why I feel good knowing we have reached our ceiling of growth. LD being the coach doesn’t help much either…..he wants a team with the condiments to do it ‘his way’. We have no chiefs on this roster, just a lot of Indians.

Stretch, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the highly touted Beaubois slotted to be JKidd’s replacement? That was one reason they could allow Berea to fly the coup without so much of an offer. Cuban is happy as a 1-time champion. Maybe he knows what he’s doing; he does still have Dirk after all. And Odom could be a very good fit there if Khloe stays out of the way.
Finally, I was thinking about MC telling us that there would be no amnesty candidate this year and I responded with, “Well the ASG would only penalize us more because they wouldn’t replace Marvin’s salary with ANYONE!”….well, the more I think about it, the more I see Marvin getting his minutes cut down with our versatile PFs that can play facing the basket and having T-Mac on the bench. Ken S. also thinks Joe looks good at the 3…..so where does that give Marvin minutes?
He is the perfect candidate for amnesty, just like Richard Jefferson or Baron Davis…..it just fits the model here. We need room to bring in a quality backup PG if and when Jeff needs a breather. I wish for Eric Maynor even over Billups. He would push Jeff for minutes as well.

GeeMack, Chicago had FIVE high quality bigs! Last year, the Hawks only had three, because Chicago’s bigs were too fast and quick for Collins. Chicago had Noah, Boozer, Gibson, Asik, and K. Thomas against Atlanta’s Josh, Al, Zaza, Collins, and Armstrong. That’s not even close to being as talented.
And don’t forget Kirk was injured the entire series also. So you’re short handed in the back court, and undermanned in the front court.

What we lack is quality coaching to maximise the talent we have. Our top 3 players are not a “big 3″ but they are top rate.
We need Al to be back to what he was a few years ago PLUS keeping his outside shot (over C’s who stay in the lane) because everyone knows that this will not happen against PFs.

Anyone for a S and T for Ridnour from the ‘Wolves – involving Jamal? Maybe Sund is working on it. TJ Ford is gone – Sebastian Telfair is gone, Acie’s gone overseas. Look’s like Ronnie Price at best if we don’t get creative, or sign Arenas or Billups.
Or maybe Sy and Wannamaker who’s a combo G until Hinrich is healthy, with some TMac thrown in behind Teague.
I like a Toney Douglas S and T with the Knicks also, even though getting the salaries to work is a bummer.
Lamar Odom – Took less to return to the Lakers a couple of years ago – loyalty huh?
Hawks note: LD interviewed different – much better, much happier, much more at peace. Maybe the young G hatred is fading as he gives up hope for his comeback or something.
Remember, LD wouldn’t play Teague or JC2 last season. We’d be up or down either side of 15, less than 3 minutes to play, still wouldn’t give JC2 burn. That’s why Sund traded him, the Gearon Jr. hired Coach wasn’t going to play him until his Rook’ contract expired anyway. May as well get somebody that your Owners Coach will at least consider playing.
But the LD interview gave me some hope. Looks and sounds more at peace, and more confident.
And I have always admired Josh’s on court Coach personae. The guy is a student of the game. He just doesn’t control himself many times, but he does know what needs to be done.
Glad he lost 30lbs, unless he was turning into Karl Malone, he was a knee injury waiting to happen – to heavy, but can sky.
Remember when he saved us in that Orlando game – LD trying to let Horford close out the game on Howard, but Dwight was killing Al and Josh, allowing Orlando back in the game. Josh yells as he’s running down court with under 2 minutes to play “He’s to tall!!”. LD promptly, and wisely I might add, reinserts Collins, and we win the game.
Josh knows basketball, he just doesn’t quite know himself.

grandad not sure what you are referring to and assume it is stern you speak and not sund. the point is he shouldnt have that kind of power to manipulate players and organizations but it does demonstrate “the pause” was not about either. the problem is it was a three way deal and yhe rockets got screwed too and say it set them back three years, of course not publicly because he wizzard of nba would only use it against them in the future the way he is dealing with the basg hat made him look bad over and over.
gdad overall a very narrow view and if so stern and the hornets got lucky the mavs and clips maybe
and the lakers and rockets didnt.
personally, i dont like stern getting into what makes basketball better as he screwed the suns one year and in a similar circumstance looked the other way in the boston series with atl when he could have tossed a few but didnt. he has also demanded a do over for the heat with shaq and dwade but not the hawks against queen. finally, didnt he throw zaza for less than what the c’s did in the playoffs against us? very uneven czar my friend. but go ahead and give him cred as though he deserves it.

Hinrich is going to be out until February at-best, based on the reports. And moreover, he’s only under contract for this season, so even if he’s healthy the rest of the way, he’s only going to end up being available for ~50% of the regular season.
We’re going to have a void in that roster spot, and we’re seemingly going to have a void where Crawford played… so, regardless, there will be ample minutes for Chauncey on this team if he chooses to come here… that is, if he gets the chance to choose since there are rumblings that CHA might be claiming him in spite of his warnings.
<<>>
That’s not how it works, my friend. Amnestying Marvin does nothing to get you to a place where you can get Dalembert… he just doesn’t make enough $ to get us under the cap enough… and in fact, our MLE would get reduced from $5 mil to 2.5 mil if we did that, so we’d have even less of a shot.
