Atlanta Hawks: Capped out, left out

It’s the kind of questions I get often on Twitter: “Why don’t the Hawks pursue [insert big-name free agent]?” After I explain that they don’t have the cap space, I sometimes get the follow-up: Why don’t they trade [Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, some other player I don't like] and use that cap space?” And then I have to tell them that doesn’t work, either, because the Hawks are over the cap and have to take salary back in a trade.

The point here is, until the Hawks gain significant cap space, which they aren’t scheduled to do until 2013-14 unless the use the amnesty card, then they aren’t going to be involved with free agents who command more than the MLE. Shoot, they still may not be involved with MLE free agents until they retreat further from the luxury-tax line.

Sure, the Hawks can swing sign-and-trades (which usually is the next question I get after the two above) but those transactions are not easy. The player has to want to sign with the Hawks and then an acceptable deal has to be worked out between Atlanta and the trading partner. That’s a lot of “ifs” involved.

The Hawks made their big when they re-signed J.J. last summer. They had the choice of using him in a sign-and-trade and then making other moves to clear cap space and make a run at the big names everyone buzzes about. Rick Sund, an enthusiastic supporter of re-signing J.J., nonetheless did his due diligence and presented that option to ASG.

All parties decided to bring back J.J. at any cost. So, for now, they must hope that this group’s upper limit is not a six-game loss in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The reason why a lack of cap flexibility is particularly problematic under the new CBA is explained by Mark Cuban in an email to Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas:

The reality is that in the new system, cap room will have far more value than it had in the past. I realize that everyone is all freaked out about how and where free agents and future free agents are going, but it’s not just about getting one guy.

We are not saving cap room in hope of that one super special free agent being there. It’s about being in the position to improve every year and possibly add some significant, younger players next year and in future years.

What I don’t think people understand is that once a team hits the tax level the ability to improve our team is reduced dramatically. In addition, your ability to make trades is reduced. So basically, if we made the move to keep everyone together with five-year deals, the team we have today is going to be the team we have for the next five years. If we were a young team it would be one thing. But we are not a young team.

The Hawks are not as old as the Mavs but neither do they have anything close to an MVP candidate or a ring. Perhaps that changes this season, or maybe it doesn’t happen until they gain some cap space and start over.

Etc.

If you’re Rick Sund, and you know that you’ve basically handcuffed yourself cap wise, why in the world would you trade your draft picks and young players, i.e. the Kirk trade?

That’s ok, Hawks made good draft pick in Benson and he’s going to help the team.

If Coach Drew plays him and give him the chance to learn and grow, To start they don’t need much offense from him.

I think Jamal is a good player, but with the emergence of Teague and with Hinrich on the bench, I actually think the Hawks may be better without him. I think he stagnated an already stagnant offense at times. With him gone, I think JJ and Marvin will both have big bounce back years. We don’t have to have an 18 ppg scorer of the bench. His defense was terrible. The Hawks really were not much better with him as sixth man as they were when Flip Murray filled that role. I am saying this as someone that likes Jamal and thinks he is fun to watch. However, I really think losing him opens up more minutes and opportunities for others. Jamal seemed to excel when everyone else was playing poor, so I think it inflated how good he actually was.

Sucks that Watson is not coming. I think he could have helped.

Sounds like we are looking like a team that might be made up of a lot of D-League players. It’s very doubtful the Hawks sign anyone else that matters, after T-Mac. No way Jamal is staying here. So, if I’m a D-League player, I got to be a Hawks fan at the moment. Not only are there jobs to be had, but playing time to be had.

I really hope that Sekou is wrong and the Hawks do not “hit the skids” this season. Looking at our lineup, however, makes me think he is right. To quote the two fans sitting at the diner in the movie Major League “These guys don’t look too f’ing good.”

Like I said @ Al Horford. Dikembe Mutumbo is not walking through that door. So it is up to you to be the “big” man on this team. If you and Smith don’t change your mindset from “finesse” mode, to “battle” mode, this team may struggle big time this year. At that point, our only hope will be an All-nba type season from Joe Johnson and Jeff Teague playing like Stephen Curry.

I think the Hawks are only making an offer to Jamal because they know it will be less than what he is offered from other teams, so when he turns the Hawks down, ownership and mgmt can tell the fans…”We tried, but Jamal chose to sign somewhere else”.

So many people wondered why the lockout was held in the first place if on the day it officially ended a glamour team added one of the most coveted players. They missed the point.

To say the lockout was enacted for the sake of competitive balance would be as inaccurate as saying the Civil War was fought to end slavery. The purpose of the Civil War was to restore the Union, and the purpose of the lockout was for the owners to make more money. .

Training camp hasn’t even opened and the season is over. Everyone, do yourselves a favor and keep your expectations low… very low. The only new storyline will be Teague at the point. Other than improved perimeter defense because of Teague (and absence of Jamal) and uptempo transitional game everything will remain the same – too few rebounds, too few free throws, too many jumpshots.

Expect more of those embarrassing blowouts like last year to Boston, Milwaukee, Los Angles, etc. Expect the rotation to shrink to eight players while everyone else languishes at the end of the bench. Expect Horford to sit out the rest of the first half everytime he gets two fouls. Expect Josh to keep shooting 3’s. Expect an lower win percentage than last year. Expect another frustrating exit from the playoffs – if we make it.

But there is a reasonably good reason to be optimistic – the season is shorted so our misery won’t be as prolonged.

All that being said, I’ll be here suffering along with everybody else because I’m a Hawks fan…

RE: darrell starks

Benson is not a playmaker, is not comfortable/confident handling the ball in transition. Etc..

His wingspan measured up at 7′3.5″ others with that measurement…
Chris Webber but he was shorter and stockier at around 6′10 260
Chris Bosh…taller and a finesse shooter
Marvin Williams…smh a shooter who is to short and not heavy enough to capitalize on that length
Ike Diogu… MArvin’s height and tries to be a power player but has knee problems bcuz hes 6′8, 250

Benson looks like a skinny jump shooter in the halfcourt. Did not look to make plays or handle the ball in transition. Looks like a Chris Bosh type, he’ll be good for jumping into defenders and getting free throws on dives to the rim… Did not see much of His jumper in the overseas games They’re posted on youtube.

Thats why he got cut. He looked unimpressive and unagressive… One thing you can do if youre a bad halfcourt player is rebound and push the ball yourself, see Magic, see Horford. If you can just make him and the bench play defense and free flow then the vets could get him open easy shots and coax his development in that aspect along.
But as of now he’s a taller Solomon Jones. He’ll never be a defensive anchor C. But I hope he can become a garbage minutes version of Bosh/Taj Gibson PF in a defensive lineup very soon.

6′7 Sy, 6′8 Williams, 6′8 McGrady, 6′11 Benson, 6′11 Pachulia

I think a package of Teague, ZaZa, and Marvin (yes, poetic justice), would have more long term upside for the Hornets in acquiring Paul than 2 Bigs past their prime in Gasol and Odom.

Gasol and Odom are far better BB players than any of those 3 from the ATL. But the ATL 3 are younger, you get 3 instead of 2, and if you developed all 3 properly, you could have some solid long term gain.

So the Nets could end up with Nene. What will they do with Nene and Brook Lopez? Play Nene as a PF?

Since there is a rumor that the Nets met secretly with Dwight, they might be less likely to get Dwight due to possible tampering accusations (regardless of whether or not it really happened).

I know it was a small sample, but we all saw how good this team played when Teague was allowed to be the PG and control the ball. Even if we get other players if Drew reverts back to what Woodson use to do, we are in trouble. The fact is that Teague is a true point guard whose only weakness was his jump shoot, which he said he has worked one. We all have seen what a healthy Joe Johnson gives us. Last year, he was not healthy at all. The problem with our team is that none of the starters have really had a defined role because we never had a defined style of play. If you let Teague play like he did in the playoffs, it opens up things for the other guys where they don’t always have to create their own shot.

Joe Johnson won’t have to hog the ball all the time. That was when we struggled. When we got in ruts he always tried to do it all himself so players just sat around and watch. Let Teague be the slasher and driver, defenses have to react to him and collaspe and that leaves Williams and Johnson open on the wings. This produces easy baskets for team as well as closer baskets to the rim for Smith and Horford, who if they do their jobs will be ready for the put-backs or passes from Teague.

Look, we all would like to get a Howard or a Chris Paul, but those guys would like to have players to play with, and honestly it would take us giving up some of our best assests to get them and they probably won’t even stay after this season. Dwight on this current team could make us contenders, Paul on this current team could make us contenders, but we would likely lose Horford or Smith or Teague so our only other weapon would be Joe Johnson. That doesn’t make us contenders. Some of the other guys that you all want are role bench players. They play better in spurts off the bench. Not everybody can translte bench production and be a starter. Look at Gortat, he is a great #2 center who plays well off the bench, but he is not a #1 center. Same as that center from the Bulls. He gave us fits as a sub not as a full time starter.

Yep, Kris Humphries would be a perfect fit on this team, just what we need. So of course we won’t get him.

D Wilkens says we are his dream team. Wants to play here. Begs. Hustles. Withstands LD’s terrible non-usage of him even when it’s clear he would benefit the team. So of course we blow him off.

We play Bibby and Jamal when it’s obvious they can’t stop D Rose, or anybody else for that matter. Of course we let the answer rot on the bench in Jeff Teague.

This is the ATL Hawks, haven’t we learned that yet?

That’s why I’ve pushed for Teague so much. The eye test, not the stat sheet, always showed me the dude improved our team. He just fit with his athleticism. He elevated the team when out there.

So I started pushing for him, when Woody, the LD just hated him for whatever reasons. PG Jeff Teague – 6% rebounding

58% rebounding and thats assuming the 7 foot, 3 point shooter. Leuer is as good a rebounder as 6′10 softie Channing Frye.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban proclaims Dallas has enough size and depth to beat the Lakers
Speaking with reporters, Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban didn’t mince words when he was asked whether Dallas can beat the Lakers this season: “Hell yes. That’s it. Hell yes. We’ve got the size now. We’ve got the depth. We’ve got a lot more depth than the Lakers. It’s not even close there.” After he was asked what the team’s expectations entailed after winning at least 50 games for nine consecutive seasons, Cuban raised the bar pretty high. “We’re going to have so much depth that it’s really going to give us an advantage this year,” he said. “All our guys are coming in with one focus only and that’s to win a championship. That’s the goal. ”
===
“A championship team needs someone who can protect the rim defensively and an elite shot-creator offensively. Occasionally, in the case of someone like Tim Duncan, one player can fill both roles.”

Why cant we have SHOT CREATIN & SHOOTING & SIZE? We dont deserve it? Is Horford that important to be tied to Jason Collins and Zaza starting for years?

Wade would Guard Teague. I think Teague could wear the soon to be 30 year old, oft injured Wade out with his speed a little bit.

LeBron would Guard Joe Johnson – and this would probably be a tough matchup for Joe but its important not give LeBron a rest for the offensive end.

Battier would Guard Josh Smith – good for the Hawks, with 7′0 leuer and 6′8 Joe the shooting is their! Smith is on the baseline!

Name That Baby!

In the Native American Indian culture, (the real founders of America) leaving all others as immigrants and murdering thieves, (pardon the side bar) the father would name the new born by looking through the slit in the tent for a sign.

If he saw a white foot rabbit? The baby was named – White Foot. Likewise, if the father saw two bears clawing? He named the baby Bear – Claw. If he witnessed dancing stars? He named the infant – Dancing Star.

Here’s my point: When the ASKG were born? Someone must have looked out a Grady window and saw “8 dogs F’ng”, and not 8 spirited white guys in a group from Atlanta.

If we can blame anyone for approving that sale, look to David Stern. How can you not vet these 8 cash poor guys properly and discover that collectively between the 8 of them, they can’t scrape together a dollar for some luxury tax, to build a damn competitive and balanced roster for a huge market like Atlanta? (See TNT and NBA TV Studios)

We deserve better! We deserve at least a conversation about our team! When has any of the cowards come to the microphone, held a presser and talked directly to the fans – to explain WHY we can’t be a contender.

I just got a stupid email a minute ago telling me time is running out for great dibs on season tickets.

Ha! Go fix your damned team and get somebody in here I haven’t seen before! A bona fide HOFer a Super Damned Star! How ’bout that? Go suck on a raw egg! I’ll buy a single ticket when I’m good and damned ready – get off my titty!

A new owner would rather have A) a superstar like Chris Paul, or B) a clean slate to deal with.

That being said, my big question is this:

If the NBA is really concerned about the Hornets’ viability to prospective owners, why the hell didn’t the league step in and quash the trade before the negotiations got so far along?

You see, the “Stern wants Paul to go to the Knicks” conspiracy theory doesn’t hold water because Tyson Chandler’s signing there and they won’t have either the cap room or the assets to get Paul. The “Stern doesn’t want Paul to go to the Lakers” conspiracy theory doesn’t hold water either. I don’t think Stern cares. Therefore, the reaction by smaller-market owners (and owners competing against the Lakers, such as Mark Cuban) had to be the main reason for blocking this deal. I don’t think this was such a great trade for L.A., but CP3 is a superstar, at least in the eyes of the league and a lot of fans. Even though Paul is likely to go to a big market on his own, I think most of the league’s owners would rather see him do it via free agency. It isn’t about the Hornets. It’s about owners like Dan Gilbert who are sick of superstars bolting for greener pastures.

I sure wish Joe Johnson could leave. He’s not a superstar, though.

Re SteveW:
You said, “LeBron would Guard Joe Johnson – and this would probably be a tough matchup for Joe but its important not give LeBron a rest for the offensive end.” Just the way you wrote that, you do know that we don’t get to pick who guards our guys, right? I’m sure you do, it just came across funny.

That was in contrast to what what we had before: Joe Johnson DEFENDING Lebron.
When the Heat have the ball:

Teague/Hinrich would be guarding DWade – Hinrich is known as a DWade stopper, and I think Teague with his speed could give DWade problems. But of course Wade could post Teague.

We could do that.

JJ would Guard LeBron – He can for short stretches Guard him about as well as anybody. JJ wants to be bigtime, so he tries very hard in these situations.

No JJ cant.

Hawks vs Small Ball
Josh Smith would Guard Lebron.
Bogut would Guard Bosh.
Leuer would Guard Haslem.
Johnson and Teague could toss up on who would guard Wade and inactive Battier.

Against us
Bosh.Haslem. Lebron.Battier.Wade
Bogut.Leuer. Josh.Johnson.Teague

Joe, Jeff – I think in your scenario the Heat would still put Battier on JJ, and put LeBron on Josh.

Either way we win right? We have size and rebounding and shooting.
As opposed to “LeBron would Guard Marvin – and this would probably give LeBron a rest for the offensive end.”

You said it yourself. Rest Lebron. Marvin does not do anything and just stands there. And JJ just iso iso iso.
With Joe and Josh you can run the PnR and now its a 2 on 1 with JJ.

JJ and Josh PnR
or
JJ iso and Marvin iso/stand in corner. IDK about Dept. of Irony Its really not that hard a decision for me.

With teams playing 4 or 5 games a week and probably only going all out for 2 of them, this is going to be the worst NBA season ever. The Hawks could have the greatest starting 5 of all time, and it won’t matter, because they can’t play 48 minutes 5 nights a week. Benches are going to have to play strong and supply a large amount of minutes every other night, and it’ll be a crapshoot as to who shows up, and when. Martin and Scola for Horford makes no sense.

You overvalue Scola’s offense vs his below average PF rebounding. Horford’s average rebounding was what gets us to the playoffs. Youd have more shooting but youd have to make up the rebounding somehow.

Toronto is far enough under the cap to adsorb Joe’s contract. They get an automatic all star. And the Hawks get the center they want. With an SG to replace Joe, who in 2-3 years may be just as good as Joe is on the downside of his career.

Also the Hawks are able to possibly re-sign Jamal if they choose to, with the money they saved.

The new line up would be:

Atlanta Hawks roster if we DIDN’T make the Hinrich trade . . .

PG – Teague
G – Johnson
F – Marvin
PF – Smith
C – Horford

Bench

6th – ( C ) Zaza
7th – ( G ) Jordan Crawford
8th – ( F ) Chris Singleton ( 2011 1st round pick . . defensive specialist )
9th – ( PG ) Bibby
10th – ( C ) Collins

Benson . . Rolle . . . Sy

Starters would get heavy minutes, similar to the 2008 – 09 Hawk team that saw all of our starters average over 33 minutes a game. Zaza would probably lead the bench in minutes with around 19 per game, unless Jordan or Singleton emerged as an asset off the bench that needed more playing time.

Singleton would’ve been a guy that Hawks fans would’ve instantly fallen in love with, seeing that he’s what we all want Marvin to be right now.

Ramon . . you’re talking about Andrea Bargnani . . at center . . a guy who is arguably one of the poorest defenders among starting centers in the NBA. Even Horford dominates that dude.

Bargnani doesn’t defend nor does he rebound. All he’d represent is another big man on the team that would rather shoot 20 footers, than bang on the inside.

So yeah, adding Andrea Bargnani to the Hawks makes us hella soft. Tissue paper soft.

I know people despise JJ’s contract, but that’s an absolute horrible trade man. If Horford and Smith aren’t going to battle on the inside, Bargnani DEFINITELY isn’t going to battle. People want him to be the next Dirk, but at least Dirk will rebound. Bargnani doesn’t even rebound as well as Marvin.

DeRozan shot 9% from three last year. LOL . . he was 5 – 52 from 3. Damn . . even I can go 5 – 52.

So that trade makes us soft on the interior, plus adds a slasher who cannot shoot whatsoever from 3 point range.

@ superior . . . I didn’t like the Hinrich trade because that trade wasn’t going to elevate us to EC Finals status. It seemed to be more of a desperation move to try to salvage a season that really started to slip away starting right before the All-Star break.

Bibby was almost useless, and Teague was still an off and on player. And while Hinrich was better than both, the trade didn’t make much sense. He wasn’t a game changing type player that we needed. I would’ve much rather saw Teague and Jordan get the playing time that Drew was giving to Bibby and Mo Evans, than trading them for Hinrich.

I still say that the Hawks made that move to prevent from paying even a little Luxury Tax, which may have happened had we kept Bibby, Jordan, and the 2011 draft pick. But if you’re a team that is not planning to make a big splash via free agency, the easiest way to get value out of cheap talent, is to keep your draft picks and see who develops out of it.

Ryan . . . that’s BS.

We can’t ( or won’t ) do anything, because ownership REFUSES to make a trade of Horford or Smith for a player that may be a better fit chemistry wise . . . or they don’t make a trade deadline deal of a player that could bring us back some assets.

IF you were going to trade JJ, the time to do it was right before the 2010 trade deadline. It would’ve been hard to justify that trade though, seeing that he was having an All-NBA type year, and the Hawks were battling for a top 3 seed all the way until late March.

Had we’d not re-signed JJ, you’re playing Russian Roulette in free agency, because it would be a very distinct possibility that we wouldn’t have been a playoff team in 2010 – 11. And if that was the case, would a big name come here?

JJ’s contract doesn’t prevent this team for doing something. If they REALLY wanted to do something, they could do it. Heck . . trading Jamal for Samuel Dalembert may have been a start. At least then, we could see how “The Core” functions with a true center.

If it were successful, we’d retain Dalembert’s Bird Rights as he became an unrestricted free agent, giving us the option to either re-sign him and go into the Luxury Tax, or do a sign and trade for some extra pieces.

The ASG and Sund would rather play it safe by keeping what we have.

I wouldn’t say Teague was an on and off player northcyde.

Dude literally got no chance to prove his worth. But when Hinrich went down, he actually got a chance to prove his worth without worrying about being yanked. And he showed he was clearly the better option.

Say what you want about JC2 being an undersized 2-gaurd, but he’d look pretty good in a Hawks uniform this season.

Same with those draft picks. Could’ve used those to fill out this roster with some talent.

But, in defense of the move to resign JJ, just look around at the NBA landscape right now.

Smaller-market teams are being forced to offer these outrageous contracts (like the one we gave JJ) just to hold onto their assets. Smaller-market owners have absolutely no leverage. So, for the Hawks, we might’ve saved a whole lot of cap space, but you’re still not looking at the Hawks having much chance to bring in any of these top-tier players because they’re fixated on playing in one of 6-7 markets with other superstars.

Ra’mon I like what you’re trying to accomplish here. But, you gotta’ re-work that to get Houston to bite. They trying to get a true center too!

When has the Hawks with Horford ever beat Houston home or away? They’re not just take Horford while giving up the inside beast Scola and the sniper K-Mart so the Hawks can get D12.

Houston, having had Olajuwan and Yao Ming ain’t gone even look at our PF/C Horford, who they routinely man handled. Last time I checked, they like ZaZa more. The only reason the trade for Brad Miller and ZaZa fell through was because Miller failed the Hawks physical exam at the last trade deadline. They tried to ream us then.

One thing Houston’s GM know is how to evaluate a true center. Their problem with Yao is he was a freak … At 7′6″ he is just too large for the rigors of NBA basketball. His feet joints are too small and weak to support the height and weight on them. Stay away from freaks like 7′7″ George Murashan and Minute Bol (rip) those guys are just too big to play our game.

But hey, keep the ideas coming … Maybe Sund has figured how to use a computer by now and is readin the blog for some great ideas. He need all the help he can get. LOL!

@ superior . . . I think the issue with keeping Bibby + Jordan + the draft pick would’ve arose this season, in regards of the luxury tax.

Hinrich makes 8 million

Bibby was due to make 6.2 million this season . . Jordan will make 1.1 million . . and the #19 pick ( which in the old CBA would’ve been somewhere around 1.2 million . . but probably lower now )

So that’s 8.5 million in salary between those 3 players.

Still . . what the ASG did was too much. They gave them Jordan + a 1st round pick. I guess the ASG had struck out so much on all of their other draft picks, that they didn’t even place any value on what assets they had.

_______________

Great insight here! Wabe you’re right, these players would by pass college all together and go straight to the NBA – IF
they could!

Problem is, none of these scrubs know the fundamental skill of how to play pro basketball. The drop off in talent between the gifted player and þhe sifted player is huge. There is no middle class role/specialist players like Rodman was. If a guy could just do one thing and rebound like Kevin Love does, then at least every team could feature a rebounder. Of course Kevin can also score too.

But, naw we one and done players in every draft and they are developmental league players at best when they get here. This is a Grown Azz man’s league – not for these weak statured body frames. They all need to grow and put on weight when they get here. That’s why they can’t supplant an old horse like Otis Thorpe or Kurt Thomas.

They get schooled and man handled by these 39 year old dudes. Its a shame that a small market have to sift through slim pickin’s.

The entire league is filled with tweeners and scrubs at best.
Problem is they all end up on our Hawks bench.

” You might as well contract 22 teams out of this league and just let these superstars have their Superteams.”

They do need to contract some teams regardless of whether or not superstars want super teams. There is not enough talent in the league in any given year for all 30 teams to feel competitive.

I may be betraying some ignorance here, since I don’t like or know much about soccer, but if I’m not mistaken the English Premier League is something like 15-20 teams, all concentrated in big cities (I think metro London has like 4 or 5 teams). Long term this may be a more profitable and competitively balanced arrangement for the NBA. 3 teams each in NYC, LA, and Chicago, then one each in, for example, DC, Boston, the Bay Area, ATL, Miami, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Houston.

Maybe that is unfair to cities like Indianapolis or Charlotte, but the current arrangement isn’t fair to those cities either. It is foolish to ignore the reality that superstars want to play in big markets. And it’s not like the English Premier League with their arrangement has any issues with remaining popular in cities where they are not represented.

To be honest, if the league had a commissioner who cared more about the long term health of the game than his own ego, I think the Bobcats and Hornets would have been contracted already.

Najeh . . . this issue isn’t about “market”. It’s about how well you run your team.

Portland would be a JUGGERNAUT right now, had it not been for the injuries to Roy and Oden. Roy wasn’t going anywhere, and Portland would’ve matched any offer for Oden in restricted free agency. So that was going to be a team that would’ve been very good for the next 3 – 5 years . . at least.

Oklahoma City is poised to be what Portland would’ve been. They’re going to be the juggernaut, depending on what happens with Russell Westbrook next summer. Durant will be there for the next 4 years. And if he wins a title or two in OKC, I don’t know if he’ll be so quick to run to LA or NYC to play ball. He MIGHT go to Washington DC and play back home.

San Antonio won 4 titles as a small market team and Duncan stayed there for life.

Memphis is on the rise . . a rapid rise . and has their 3 main guys locked up ( Randolph, Gay, Conley ) for the next 4 years . . with possibly Marc Gasol being locked up long term as well.

I mean, you’ve talked ad nauseum about how the ASG has either mismanaged or flat out missed their chance to make us great.

It’s about how these teams are run . . not what market they’re in. Had Lebron or Melo or Howard or Paul won a championship with their respective team, I bet they all would’ve stayed.

Amare didn’t want to leave Phoenix, they simply didn’t want to pay him a MAX deal.

Deron didn’t force himself out of Utah. They made that proactive move themselves for fear of losing him for nothing. And even Deron spent 5 1/2 years in Utah.

These teams are doing this to themselves.

Minnesota . . drafting all of those point guards a few years ago, but trading the best one out of the group ( Ty Lawson ) and passing on the best PG in that draft ( Stephen Curry ).

Charlotte . . drafts Adam Morrison, but passes on Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay ( that’s the Shelden Williams draft, by the way ).

US . . . passing on both Paul and Deron Williams in 2005 . . then taking Shelden in 2006. That’s two top 5 picks for us, and we basically failed to get a star player with both picks.

Nah man . . . this “market” stuff isn’t like baseball, in which a team like Kansas City simply can’t outbid the Yankees and Red Sox for players. These “bad teams” need to make the most out of their draft picks, while also building their team correctly via free agency.

And these ‘bad teams’ don’t have to literally give away assets to these large market teams either. Too many teams simply do salary dumps to these large market teams, and give them the pieces that they want or need.

He is one of those giddy guys in the intramural league who waits at halfcourt while everyone else plays defense then begs for the ball when his team gets the rebound so he can shoot. Dude, teams in big markets can go minus a draft because they can land premier talent in FA.

Teams like the Blazers, OKC, and Memphis drafted well. FA’s wouldn’t be lining up to play there.

The Hawks are the Hawks because:

a – they can’t draft
b – they can’t court big name FA’s

Thus, we’re screwed. But, markets are big. Bigger market teams don’t have to hit on every one of their draft picks to be successful. They can bring in talent through free agency. Look at the Lakers roster.

But take a situation like the one Denver was in. They played in the Western Conference finals. They built that team up pretty well. Then they’re forced to trade away the ’star player’ they drafted because he was lured to a bigger market team.

Even drafting well doesn’t gaurantee you anything. You can draft well, and watch your assets choose to go elsewhere.

This is all true. But looking at superstars in the aggregate, there is a much, MUCH higher percentage of them that would like to go from small markets to big markets. Duncan is the exception to the rule. Blake Griffin is from OKC, but I can guarantee you he is not going to opt out of his Clippers deal to try to sign there, no matter how well that organization is run.

Of course running an organization well is key. But even then, a well-run organization in a big market is going to have a lot of options open to it that a well-run organization in a small market just won’t have. OKC is well run, but they also got lucky by being able to draft two superstars, at least one of whom seems like he enjoys being there. The possibility of a team like OKC pulling off a Gasol trade or a KG trade and being able to sign that player to an extension is still much lower than the possibility of the Lakers or Celtics being able to pull off such a move. That is a disadvantage under which that team will ALWAYS operate, no matter how they run their team.

“Nah man . . . this “market” stuff isn’t like baseball, in which a team like Kansas City simply can’t outbid the Yankees and Red Sox for players. These “bad teams” need to make the most out of their draft picks, while also building their team correctly via free agency.”

Competitive balance has been an issue in Major League Baseball for a long time, but even there, it is possible for a team like Tampa to continue to be competitive year in and year out if they draft well year in and year out. As their rookies become too expensive, they bring up the next wave of talent from AAA. It is actually harder to pull this off for a low-budget team in the NBA, because typically even if a team is lucky enough to draft one superstar, they no longer suck enough to draft another one in a subsequent draft. Inevitably, that leads to situations like LeBron in Cleveland or CP3 in New Orleans, where that star makes that team competitive enough to make the playoffs year in and year out, gets tired of not having enough help, and eventually decides to leave.

This goes back to the problem of the NBA’s talent pool being the shallowest of the three major sports. A skilled GM for the Rays can draft four or five future above-average major-league players in one draft. A skilled GM for the Hornets might still end up coming out of a draft with only a role player to show for it, because there are just not enough future stars in each draft. One possible solution to this issue is to make the NBA draft eligibility rules for domestic players similar to those for international players, where you can draft the rights to a player and sign him later. That way, if a team drafts a LeBron, they can hold off on signing him until they can suck for another year and draft another star to go with him.

And to compound this problem, a team full of above average players can win a championship in baseball or football, whereas that is next to impossible in basketball. You mention Memphis as a team on the rise, but do you really think that team has any shot at a championship? You really think Randolph/Gay/Gasol is going to beat LeBron/Wade/Bosh or Allen/Pierce/Garnett or CP3/Kobe/Bynum in a playoff series?

Memphis is a fun team to watch, but if a small market team’s best hope is to a) sign an out of shape malcontent who magically turns his career around and reaches his potential ten years into his career and b) trade their best player for one of the biggest busts of all time and have his little brother thrown in the deal, only to see the little brother blossom into a better player than anyone thought he would be, that isn’t exactly a foolproof plan.

The point I am making is not that building a contender in a small market is impossible, but rather that it is so much harder than building a contender in a big market that a small-market team owner cannot realistically expect long stretches of success. In fact, I would bet that even San Antonio, the shining example of small market success, is going to go in the tank for a long time once Duncan and Popovich retire.

“I mean, you’ve talked ad nauseum about how the ASG has either mismanaged or flat out missed their chance to make us great.”

The reason I am so hard on the DASG is because they are actually in a very desirable market, and they STILL have found a way to screw it up. We don’t live in Minneapolis. There is no reason why the Hawks should be run like a small market franchise. Athletes WANT to be here. A ton of athletes who don’t have any outside connection to this city live here and spend time here. Really, other than NYC, LA, and the Florida franchises, ATL should be the next most desirable free agent destination if everything else was equal. The reason it is not is solely because of the DASG’s dysfunction. I don’t have enough fingers to count the number of avid NBA fans I know in this city who support some team other than the Hawks because they are tired of the Hawks sucking.

If the Hawks had made it to the second round three years in a row and they were in Memphis or Charlotte, I might not be so hard on the DASG. Then again, if the DASG operated a franchise in one of those markets, they probably wouldn’t have been able to get their team to the second round even once.

Okay, so we would have paid out $500,000 more to Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, and a 1st rd pick. That is still far superior to Kirk Hinrich. In what world is $500,000 the price for 2 1st round picks?

OMG! “See who shakes loose.” – Drew -
____________________

Is that the plan? To stand under an UFA tree and hope something shakes loose? Well, who’s gonna’ be shaking the tree? How hard is the tree shaker gonna’ shake it – real hard?

The Hawks management is like that vending machine you see at the carnival and some sports bars. You know the ones where you continuously feed it $1.00 bills and guide the silver three pronged gripper over a cute little stuffed animal. When you grip it, you have to drop it into the big hole and give it to your girl?

Problem is, every time you grab it? The claw let’s it go just before you swing it over the hole!

That’s what the Hawks do with FA. They stand under a Dollar Tree and wait for “Too Much Good Stuff” to fall into the Bargain Bin – they wait for something to shake loose.
Something irregular, you know where the seams and thread don’t line up and match.

Hell, I bet all 8 of the ASKG camp out in the parking lot over night and bum rush the Bin when the doors open. A stampede – no doubt!

The better teams are shopping at Rich’s! LOL!
The Lakers are over at The Louis Vutton Shop – Shopping!

Plethora of veteran shooting guards suddenly available:

Hawks only $2.5M under luxury tax, so unless they get creative, or something “shakes loose”:

Gilbert Arenas – Amnesty
Vince Carter – $4M buyout
Chauncey Billups – Amnesty
Rip Hamilton – $14M buyout
Jamal Crawford – Free Agent
Michael Redd – Free Agent

I know theyre all racing to Miami, NYK, LAL, Chicago but “real” money is equally hard to turn down, so the under the cap teams will get a shot at them, but most of them are in re-build mode and want their youngsters to play so hope is alive.

We need a veteran PG (Billups) and a backup SG/F (Vinsanity) and roll with Horford/ZaZa/Collins.

Billups Teague Hinrich

I don’t think market size is all tha significant, it is about owners willing to pay into the luxury tax. Guys don’t want to play in LA, they want to play for the Lakers. They aren’t attracted to the Nets (NYC’s TV market). Is anyone anxious to go to Philly? Who has a bigger TV market, Philly or Miami? If you go to a luxury-tax paying owner, you have a better chance to go deep in the playoffs and win a title. Heck, guys were interested in going to Cleveland (yeah, Cleveland) when LBJ was there and Hilbert was forking over the money. Sorry, this is all about guys taking the easy way to glory by joining forces.

As far as the Hawks are concerned, I think more than anything they need a quality big guy. I don’t know whether there are quality bigs available at the Hawks’ asking price, but they need to try to get someone else who can come in and provide some toughness inside, preferably also some shot blocking. I think this is a bigger priority than adding any more depth in the back court or on the wings.

It is about markets…

Dude, teams in big markets can go minus a draft because they can land premier talent in FA.

Teams like the Blazers, OKC, and Memphis drafted well. FA’s wouldn’t be lining up to play there.

The Hawks are the Hawks because:

a – they can’t draft
b – they can’t court big name FA’s

Thus, we’re screwed. But, markets are big. Bigger market teams don’t have to hit on every one of their draft picks to be successful. They can bring in talent through free agency. Look at the Lakers roster.

I agree with this. As others have stated the Hawks are not a small market team but they treat the team like they are management that is. To be good especially in the NBA, you have to take some chances and pay into the luxury tax. Atlanta is a big market and a good location. I never get the impression that the Hawks are marketed correctly. There are many fans but you wouldnt know it in regards to the media. It is as if they are an afterthought.

Look at Boston. This is probably their last run with that group but they are making moves. Got rid of Glen Davis RIvers didnt think he was working hard enough for Brandon Bass. They resigned Jeff Green and just signed Chris Wilcox. Next year they will have a lot of cap space and even if Howard or Deron wont be available for them, they will still be in good shape

TMcGrady will replace Damien Wilkins, and JTeague will replace Bibby as our starting PG. Rookie Benson will replace EThomas, and Rolle will replace JPowell. Teague as our starting PG is a vast improvement over Bibby in every way, except 3pt shooting. TMcGrady will get more mins, and is an improvement in almost every area except for Damien having a slight edge on DEF.

Rolle is taller and bigger than Powell, and should offer just as much production and versatility, if not more. We made it to last yrs semifinals with a team that wasn’t as versatile, talented, quick, fast, or as athletic as this team will be. And, they managed to accomplish that feat while adjusting to a new HC, and had to learn new OFF/DEF systems.

Exactly what have all of the other Eastern Conference teams done to improve themselves to the point where someone would foolishly claim the Hawks would hit the skids? With Teague as our starting PG and playing consistent mins, we’ve definitely improved our starting lineup. The addition of TMac gives us more versatility off our bench.

Benson and Rolle definitely add more size(height), youth, speed, quickness, versatility, and athleticism to our bench. They should also give us more rebounding and interior DEF than we got from Powell and Thomas. Add a shooter, and a short team fill in at PG until Hinrich returns, and we’re in business.

What exactly have the Hawks done that propels them above anybody else in the East? The Bulls are in the process of acquiring a 2-gaurd. The Heat have a healthy Haslem back and have signed Shane Battier. The C’s aren’t making a splash, but aren’t sitting idle like the Hawks seem to be.

And by the way, we have lost Jamal. In your synopsis, you said T-Mac replaces Damien. Teague replaces Bibby. Whose replacing Jamal? Kirk Hinrich?

Hawks could do worse than Marvin at SF. And to everyone who wants him to be Lebron….He is what he is supposed to be, the 5th option on the floor. Its not great for the high draft pick that we picked him with, but he does not play that badly.

SLIMJR-I don’t know how serious you are about the expectations you have for Marvin Williams, but you could be closer to the truth than you might realize. Having a PG that can penetrate and dish, as well as create shots for himself and others, will help both he and Josh tremendously. When is the last time we had a PG that could even think about going coast to coast on a one man fast break, let alone actually being able to do it?

One thing is certain, unlike JJ and Jamal, Teague won’t require clearouts, or have to run the clock down while pounding the ball endlessly before taking his man off the dribble. I honestly believe Teague will allow our starting lineup to finally realize its potential and play the uptempo style of ball it’s built to play.

Radmanovic may be 6′11″ but I don’t know that he really qualifies as a “big”. It’s not like he plays D or crashes the boards or posts up. He is more of the knock down shooter that Smoove wants than the big that Al wants.

Unlike Sekou Smith, I believe the Hawks won’t come close to hitting the skids. I’m a BIG supporter of T-Mac. I think he can contribute this year significantly on both offense and defense. Not like the old T-Mac…but alot more improved then last year. We have a VERY good starting five, with either Marvin or T-Mac starting. I know we need a center, but in my opinion we need a better bench MORE then a center.

It’s all about the bench.

What is depth?

I told a Bulls Blogger last year they had no bench or a good 2 guard, but the won 60 games.

SAY IT OUT LOUD….Keith Bogan starting SG for a 60 win team…That sounds crazy.

Bulls Bench
Brewer, Korver, Watson, Gibson,Asik and Thomas. Nothing about that bench says championship, but they made it to the ECF. I laughed at that guy last year and the Bulls bench, but he laughed last….It is called coaching. If you coach your bench right, they will be good.

How much more size do we need?

We have 3 players 6′11(Zaza, Benson and Rolle), one 7ft(Collins), and 6 players between 6′7 and 6′10(Sy, JJ, T-mac,Marv,Josh and AL)….That sounds like size to me.

LD has what he needs…..now he needs to coach them.

Which current Hawk players do you (bloggers) trust to make big shots, clutch buckets, pressure free-throws, buzzer-beaters, swagger daggers and game winners – Jeff Teague, Pape Sy, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Tracy McGrady, Kirk Hinrich? You have more faith in the aforementioned guys making a pressure-packed, perimeter jumper over Jamal Crawford? Are you serious? I’ll answer the question for you; no, you can’t be serious.

Right now, the Hawks have no one comfortable with taking and making big shots and clutch buckets. Jamal is not only comfortable in these pressure situations but embraces them. If Crawford leaves, which Hawk player are you going to have faith in taking the big shot besides Joe Johnson? Again, I’ll answer that (question) for you – no one.

To a man, Rick Sund, you, and the ASG boys better get off y’alls [you all(s) - pronounced 'yauls'] shoulders and re-sign Jamal Crawford. You snooze, you lose.

I hope SlimJr and Ken Strickland are right about Marvin. The Hawks could sure his worth at 7.5M because, like Al said last year, “I will go to war with what we’ve got.”

And, we certainly got Marvin. Sorry, but Marvin does not give me butterflies. Now Teague? I’m in love with and you Ken S. are right, this core has never enjoyed the benefit of a real PG. I heard Teague was a SG at Wake Forest and was hella good. I’m just so excited to see him run this team full throttle – I can’t wait.

With T-Mac already on board, I’d gladly go without Stackhouse’s veteran leadership or Radmanovic’s 3 point shooting in favor of using that roster spot on a quality big man who can defend and rebound. Ivan Johnson received MC’s seal of approval when he was at Training Camp right before the lockout. The dude is a 6-8 230 athletic beast with NBA offensive moves. No D at all, plays out of control sometimes, overestimates his considerable talent on occasion, and has had personal issues at every stop – DLeague, Korea etc.

That latter portion is a DraftExpress condensation.

I wouldn’t mind Radmanovic as a F wing behind Marvin.

And ya’ll do remember on this blog we used to joke about Sund bringing him here, because Sund was an absolute disaster as the Seattle GM when it came to drafting players. This was one of many examples of that.
