Atlanta Hawks: Camp roster rounds into shape

Zaza and Magnum Rolle were at Philips today. Twin is expected to re-sign with the Hawks tomorrow. Earl Watson told Jody Genessy of the Deseret News he hasn’t decided where he will sign.

So, assuming T-Mac and Twin follow through and sign with the Hawks and Watson ends up picking Atlanta, this is what the team depth chart would look like for the start of camp (not counting Kirk Hinrich):

PG–Jeff Teague/Earl Watson/Pape Sy
SG–Joe Johnson/Tracy McGrady/Brad Wanamaker
SF–Marvin Williams/Tracy McGrady
PF–Josh Smith/Magnum Rolle
C–Al Horford/Zaza Pachulia/Jason Collins/Keith Benson

That’s 14 players on the roster, 10 of whom have guaranteed contracts.

Still don’t see any of the “knock-down 3-point shootersL.D. said he wants. Twin, when deployed in favorable matchups, ended up providing some of the defensive toughness L.D. is seeking and T-Mac is a pretty good defender and very good rebounder: According to Hoopdata, last season he was seventh in defensive rebound rate among shooting guards who played at least 15 minutes.

But so far it looks like the Hawks haven’t addressed two of their main concerns. Stay tuned.

Etc.

  • I don’t think there will be a sign-and-trade with Chicago for Jamal. The Hawks aren’t looking to take on the kind of salary the matching rules require and the Bulls are focused on using their MLE to sign a free agent.
  • Zaza said he’s fully recovered from the left calf injury he suffered during FIBA play and aggravated while playing in Turkey.
  • It looks like Damien is not in the Hawks’ plans.
  • Word is Hinrich will be at camp tomorrow to continue his rehab.
  • Rob Mahoney, writing for ProBasketballTalk, endorses the T-Mac signing: “For the league minimum, this is very likely the best the Hawks could possibly do.”
  • AJC wise guy Jeff Schultz does not like a T-Mac-for-Jamal swap: “It’s a good sign if McGrady’s addition is meant only to add depth on the bench. It’s a bad sign if his signing is intended to soften the blow for the possible loss of Jamal Crawford.”
  • Hawks blog legend Sekou predicts “this is the year the Hawks hit the skids.

You guys still think Smith can win at the PF? You know the PF is usually the last one back and he is an average rebounder for the position?

The SF is usually the identity/glue guy. Give me Smith as my SF. Garbage buckets. REBounds.etc.

Smith 15% of all rebounds
Durant 11% of all rebounds
Carmelo 11% of all rebounds
Lebron 10% of all rebounds

Got to go with what you got. Tough task Build a conventional roster with Unconventional players.

Smith 15% of all rebounds, 6′8, center skills – rim protector baseline finisher
{Leuer 12% of all rebounds, 6′11, perimeter skills – rim finisher, 3 point perimeter savvy}
Bogut 18% of all rebounds, 7′0, center skills – rim protector baseline finisher

Jon Leuer and Bogut … Brad Wanamaker Al Horford and Jason Collins

thats who we’re going to war with seriously?

It’ll be funny how the Hawks go big now? Both Marvin and T-Mac on the bench for Josh or bench Horford for a true center, Twin or ZP?

wtf is going on?

Why are people acting as if losing Jamal is going to break this team? Look, Jamal may have been a good scorer who occasionally came through in the clutch, but his defense was absolutely atrocious and he provided no other attribute besides throwing up shots. I don’t think we will miss him as much as people believe.

Hawks looking very thin at the PF position, unless you want to give AL 15-20 minutes a night at the 4, but then this would, of course, mean heavy minutes for Zaza or Twin.

Hell, the Hawks looking pretty thin at every position, but if Kirk comes back, stays healthy, and is able to perform as well as Kirk has performed when healthy in the past, the Hawks are fairly solid at the guard positions. (Though, as MC notes, the Hawks are still missing that pure knock-down shooter.)

wish him well. but we have enough problems

PG–Jeff Teague
SG–Joe Johnson
SG–Marvin Williams
PF–Josh Smith
PF–Al Horford
2011 Mavs
PG–Jason Kidd – Jeff Teague (thinking being Teagues speed & IQ develops by Playoffs he is elite)
SG–Jason Terry – Joe Johnson
SF–Dirk Nowitzki – Jon Leuer (thinking Leuer is a shot maker; Drew can use athleticism at other spots to get him open – Childress, Marvin, Damien- exactly 7′0 wingspan players are usually special & at his height he has shown enough; can flat out score on switches)
PF–Shawn Marion – Josh Smith (youth and weight loss & me against the world= Josh advantage)
C–Tyson Chandler – Andrew Bogut
—–
Haywood vs Pachulia etc.

I’m not so certain we hit the skids this season…nothing on a first season Woody level…Boston is reeling, Orlando may have just been left to die in a lurch, and if that is even half true, we maintain….53% win rate is our worst case scenario, hell….25 loses in a 66 game season seems acceptable….

I figured that TMac’s signing would mean that they wouldn’t sign another proven wing player. With 96 minutes between the SG and SF slot, expect Joe, Marvin, JOsh (when the Hawks go big) and TMac to use all but a few token minutes (likely for Sy). I’m not thriled about our BIG depth… but I have been barking up that tree for 6+ years (remember the John Edwards/Este Batista era?).

The fact is, they’ve done just about all they can with the current roster, all the while resisting the urge to make any significant changes to their core. This is the year that inactivity comes back to haunt them..

I think the Hawks are still a playoff team in the 4-6 seed range.

I thought we were using the Mavs model. Detroit model?

Where’s our bootleg Dirk? Where’s our Rasheed? Where IS Jon Leuer? Brad Wanamaker? Lolwut

What is the formula here?

G Jason Kidd – Joe Johnson
G Jason Terry – Jeff Teague
PF-Marion – Josh Smith
SF-Nowitzki- Jon Leuer
C- Chandler – Bogut

Instead we got Brad Wanamaker and “stuff”.

G Jason Kidd – Joe Johnson
G Jason Terry – Jeff Teague
PF-Marion – JOSH SMITH
SF- Dirk Nowitzki – MARVIN WILLIAMS
C- Chandler vs PF) AL HORFORD

not only is there a huge talent gap and jump shooters Al vs a true C. JUMP SHOTS GALORE. This is NOT a CHAMPIONSHIP team.

Damien is leaving. In two years or less Josh as well. Hope he finds his way onto Dallas where they no how to maximize SF tweeners.

As first reported on Hoopsworld, free agent guard Jamal Crawford’s preference would be a second tour of duty with the Bulls through a sign and trade deal with Atlanta. According to the report, the Bulls would offer Ronnie Brewer and an unnamed second player (most likely Kyle Korver) to match a first year salary in the $8 to 9 million range for Crawford.

But now it looks as if they arent going to make that move. They need more shooters, sharp-shooters that is.

I absolutely hate MC’s depth chart and don’t think it is accurate. It is either this or fail:

Teague/?/Wannamaker
Johnson/McGrady/Pape
Josh/Marvin/
Al/Rolle/Benson
/Zaza/Collins

The fact is Wannamaker was a PG/SG in college. Fact is Pape is no PG but SG if anything. Fact is Marvin is no starting SF.

undrafted rookies can be signed for the rookie minimum, which was $473k in the last CBA. vets with three or more years experience make more than that but for cap/tax purposes count the same as a two-year vet minimum, which was $854k in last CBA.

Woody,

I meant the Hawks need sharp-shooters. They way they play on offense, they shoot lots of jumpers cause they really didnt have anyone that could create shots besides JJ and JC(he’s pretty much gone), so if they are gonna make a move someone, make sure they get someone that can actually shoot. Not someone like Smoove camping out at the 3point line.
