Zaza and Magnum Rolle were at Philips today. Twin is expected to re-sign with the Hawks tomorrow. Earl Watson told Jody Genessy of the Deseret News he hasn’t decided where he will sign.
So, assuming T-Mac and Twin follow through and sign with the Hawks and Watson ends up picking Atlanta, this is what the team depth chart would look like for the start of camp (not counting Kirk Hinrich):
PG–Jeff Teague/Earl Watson/Pape Sy
SG–Joe Johnson/Tracy McGrady/Brad Wanamaker
SF–Marvin Williams/Tracy McGrady
PF–Josh Smith/Magnum Rolle
C–Al Horford/Zaza Pachulia/Jason Collins/Keith Benson
That’s 14 players on the roster, 10 of whom have guaranteed contracts.
Still don’t see any of the “knock-down 3-point shooters” L.D. said he wants. Twin, when deployed in favorable matchups, ended up providing some of the defensive toughness L.D. is seeking and T-Mac is a pretty good defender and very good rebounder: According to Hoopdata, last season he was seventh in defensive rebound rate among shooting guards who played at least 15 minutes.
But so far it looks like the Hawks haven’t addressed two of their main concerns. Stay tuned.
Etc.

You guys still think Smith can win at the PF? You know the PF is usually the last one back and he is an average rebounder for the position?
The SF is usually the identity/glue guy. Give me Smith as my SF. Garbage buckets. REBounds.etc.
Smith 15% of all rebounds
Durant 11% of all rebounds
Carmelo 11% of all rebounds
Lebron 10% of all rebounds
Got to go with what you got. Tough task Build a conventional roster with Unconventional players.
Smith 15% of all rebounds, 6′8, center skills – rim protector baseline finisher
{Leuer 12% of all rebounds, 6′11, perimeter skills – rim finisher, 3 point perimeter savvy}
Bogut 18% of all rebounds, 7′0, center skills – rim protector baseline finisher

Why are people acting as if losing Jamal is going to break this team? Look, Jamal may have been a good scorer who occasionally came through in the clutch, but his defense was absolutely atrocious and he provided no other attribute besides throwing up shots. Hawks looking very thin at the PF position, unless you want to give AL 15-20 minutes a night at the 4, but then this would, of course, mean heavy minutes for Zaza or Twin.

Hell, the Hawks looking pretty thin at every position, but if Kirk comes back, stays healthy, and is able to perform as well as Kirk has performed when healthy in the past, the Hawks are fairly solid at the guard positions. PG–Jason Kidd – Jeff Teague (thinking being Teagues speed & IQ develops by Playoffs he is elite)
SG–Jason Terry – Joe Johnson
SF–Dirk Nowitzki – Jon Leuer (thinking Leuer is a shot maker; Drew can use athleticism at other spots to get him open – Childress, Marvin, Damien- exactly 7′0 wingspan players are usually special & at his height he has shown enough; can flat out score on switches)

I’m not so certain we hit the skids this season…nothing on a first season Woody level…Boston is reeling, Orlando may have just been left to die in a lurch, and if that is even half true, we maintain….53% win rate is our worst case scenario, hell….25 loses in a 66 game season seems acceptable….

I figured that TMac’s signing would mean that they wouldn’t sign another proven wing player. With 96 minutes between the SG and SF slot, expect Joe, Marvin, JOsh (when the Hawks go big) and TMac to use all but a few token minutes (likely for Sy). I’m not thriled about our BIG depth… but I have been barking up that tree for 6+ years (remember the John Edwards/Este Batista era?).

As first reported on Hoopsworld, free agent guard Jamal Crawford’s preference would be a second tour of duty with the Bulls through a sign and trade deal with Atlanta. According to the report, the Bulls would offer Ronnie Brewer and an unnamed second player (most likely Kyle Korver) to match a first year salary in the $8 to 9 million range for Crawford.
But now it looks as if they arent going to make that move. They need more shooters, sharp-shooters that is.

undrafted rookies can be signed for the rookie minimum, which was $473k in the last CBA. vets with three or more years experience make more than that but for cap/tax purposes count the same as a two-year vet minimum, which was $854k in last CBA.

I meant the Hawks need sharp-shooters. They way they play on offense, they shoot lots of jumpers cause they really didnt have anyone that could create shots besides JJ and JC(he’s pretty much gone), so if they are gonna make a move someone, make sure they get someone that can actually shoot. Not someone like Smoove camping out at the 3point line.

Joe Johnson has to play up to his ludicrous contract, Marvin Williams has to prove he can play in this league, Josh Smith has to play smarter but keep his intensity, Al Horford has to keep developing his post game, and Jeff Teague has to build off a stellar playoff performance against The Bulls. Lol and people were dissing Bogut.
Milwaukee drafted Luer because he played in Wisconsin. Only teams interested in stretch 4s are Orlando with Dwight.
And Leuer wont get off the bench for MIL. Guys like him and Ryan Andersen and Josh Childress need dominant players like ATL has to open his shots up.
But if you play off of a solid guy he can drop 20 on you. What would it take for him to get 4 points per quarter? A pick and pop for 3 here a baseline drop off for a dunk here.
Hawks management is so stupid. This team was built around Josh early on. Then we went from Shelden to Horford who does everything right, everyone treated him like God. Consumate role players.
Shelden to Horford. Is like going from Rosie O’Donnell to Halle Barry.
Damien to Leuer. Would be like going from Jocelyn Wildenstein to a Victorias Secret 3some. Tremendous Upgrade and very versatile scoring.
Starting Jason Collins to starting Andrew Bogut and Collins as a 3rd stringer on the bench…. need I say more.
THIS is why no one likes the T-Mac and Wanamaker crud. Its mediocre pandering, mediocre size.

Jeff Schultz writes that if we are planning on replacing Jamal with McGrady that is a bad indicator. I agree that if we think we are getting anything close to what Jamal gave from McGrady it is a bad thought process. On the other hand, a better indicator is if Marvin Williams is a starter and if Al Horford is forced to moonlight as a starting NBA C, that is a indication of a bad current situation. Marvin and T-Mac off the bench can give you what Jamal gave statistically. Marvin needs to come off bench and we need to get a solid/legit C. Does Al have to spell it out for the ASG?

The Bulls want to give the worst defender in the NBA 5-8mil(former B minus Level)…The Hawks Just gave T-Mac 1mil(former A level)…A player that some believe may be better than our 8mil a year SF and some people are unhappy….Really?

You know it’s sad that the Lakers can legitimately pull of several trades and end up with both Dwight and Paul.
As for us, I’m not all that impressed with the bench. Even with Marvin in the starting line-up, we are very good. But besides T-Mac and Zaza, I don’t see anyone else who can make much difference coming off the bench. And if by some miracle Dwight actually does leave the Eastern Conference….then we will end up not needing Collins.
Does free agency open up at 12:01 am? It will be very interesting.

The Knicks just got Tyson Chandler by using amnesty on Chauncey Billups we are now in a fight to see what we can do to stay in front of the Celtics for the 4th spot and homecourt advantage. Wonder who wins that.
Heat
Knicks
Bulls
Celtics- Willing to make moves and they are the Celtics for a reason will spend.
Hawks
Pacers- Under cap and willing to spend money to get better.
Magic- Trying to impress Dwight so he can stay.
Nets- Trying to impress Deron and already have one of the best young legit C’s. Also, under the cap.
We are cooked without a move. Everyone on that list is more willing and able to do what it takes to get better, or are already better than us. We could legitimately fall from playoff contentions if all those teams use there assets to get better and or Bogut get’s healthy this year.

I’ve never bought a Hawks jersey, I’m buying a Hawks’ McGrady, are they ready yet?
Look this team went to the 2nd rd of the playoffs 3yrs consecutive, they’ll make a 6-7th seed intact, minus Bibby, Crawford.
Goal is to improve within the constraints of the salary cap, no need in complaining about it, it is what it is, the CBA favors the owners and thus, chips can fall to mid-market teams like ATL.
McGrady was an excellent pickup – $1.4M only counts $.850 vs. cap – smart
Collins – ditto, so we have a big banger for Howard, Chandler and a versatile shooter.
Point guard is the biggest hole: Billups, George Hill, Felton, Iverson on the backend.
Wannamaker, Lighty too much like Mario West, Royal Ivey, been there done that, you could pick any guy outta the stands to run hard. Cheap talent is what we need.
Whats the market for Dalembart? His name has been awfully quiet.

That’s probably their plan all along. At this point I would be surprised if the Lakers didn’t have their own Big 3 to start the season.
As far as I am concerned, though, better the Lakers than the Knicks. The Knicks dropped a big chunk of change on Tyson Chandler hoping for CP3. Chandler will make them better, but if they don’t get CP3 they are still not real contenders. And anyway, I dislike NY teams a lot more than I dislike LA teams

What most of you fans are forgetting is what the hawks strengths are… Its Versatility. By having horford and josh on the floor at the same time it creates situations where its match-up problems. Either one of them can start a break off a miss and every starter on the team has the ability to be used in creative ways. If teague can understand when to force the action and when not to force the action the hawks will win games and get to the playoffs again.. They would be dumb to trade josh smith as in he does alot for the team on the defensive end as well as rotations. If Larry Drew can implement the correct offense to utilize the strenghts of the Hawks is going to be the deciding factor..

What you’re forgetting is…
We’ve been doing it for years now, and we haven’t really gotten very far in the playoffs with those ‘mismatches’ on the floor.
I don’t mind keeping both. I like both Horford and Smith. But, the status quo won’t cut it. They need to bring in some additional talent, which they never do.
I’m booking it now. We’ll lose Jamal, T-Mac and a guy like Earl Watson will pretty much be it…

He seem to me Atlanta fan aren’t pateince when comes to player they want a championship tomorrow. We drafted a center Keith Benson and now Al Horford can move to strong forward. This Benson is going to surprise a lot of fans.Jamal Crawford is great scorer but lack defense that what wins you games.T-Mac can rebound and assist ,and lastly we aren’t paying and arm and leg for him. Jack: 2 yrs – roughly 11 mill left on deal
K Mart: 2 yrs – 25 million
Odom: 1 yr – 9 million ( 8.2 million team option next year )
Scola: 4 yrs – 39 million
Okafor: 3 yrs – 41 million
Plus the Hornets will get a few 1st round picks.
Essentially, it would be a deal similar that Memphis got when they traded Gasol to Memphis. People thought that trade was extremely lopsided ( I did too ). But the money off the books + the draft picks enabled Memphis to get these players
- Zach Randolph
- Marc Gasol
- Darrell Arthur
- Sam Young
In the end, although the trade handed the Lakers 2 championships, it ended up being a GREAT trade for Memphis.
But it’s really up to New Orleans to do something with those draft picks, and use the coming cap space to get a real good player(s)

@ JeJe . . . that’s becoming one of my main problems with that dude now. The Hawks are a soft team from top to bottom, and that includes our star players ( JJ, Josh, Al ).
Everybody on this team CAN’T be soft. Zaza is the dang tough guy. Marvin, of all people, may be the 2nd toughest guy on the team. But our stars MUST get tougher.
It’s just a real bad sign when you see Smith drop 15 – 20 lbs to play more SF . . and Horford do everything in his power to become Rashard Lewis instead of Kevin Garnett.
Add JJ’s inability ( or unwillingless ) to look for contact to get to the free throw line when he drives into the lane, and it just illustrates how soft our “stars” are.
These guys better hope that whatever they’re doing in the offseason will make this group a better team overall, because if it doesn’t, most of us are going to be crying for change. That 2nd week of the season in which we play Miami and Chicago 4 times in 6 days, will tell a lot about this team early.

The Lakers are simply illustrating to the rest of the league how to do business. This move has nothing to do with how much money the Lakers have. It illustrates that the Lakers are willing to give up highly regarded pieces in order to get who they want.
The Lakers are willing to trade 2 of their top 4 players, in order to get the player that they want. Heck . . Gasol was 2nd team All-NBA last year. And the Lakers didn’t even BLINK to trade that dude.
Other teams value their young stars and act like they’re future Hall of Famers in the making, even if they haven’t shown that type of ceiling yet. The Lakers are like . . “forget that, we’re trying to win titles around here.”
Sund would never make a move like trading Smith and Horford for Dwight Howard.

Learn the rules before you speak. Billups has to clear waivers. Meaning, every team under the cap has the option of bidding on him before he clears waivers and is free to sign with anyone. For the last 3 years intelligent bloggers have been saying that this team peaked under Mr, Woodson and is in a slow spiral down with Mr. Drew. Most attribute the lack of a center and Al Horfords unwillingness to play the position , plus the lack of superior guard play as the reason for the demise. Ray Charles can see that and hes dead. So how come Mr. Sekou is a prophet for realizing what we all know, and have said for years.
THE HAWKS NEED A CENTER.

The purpose of the lockout was to see how strong they could come back and always was. Competitive balance is not good for the league. The NBA is entertainment. In entertainment you need people to have strong emotions towards what you do, rather hate or love. The hate is provided by teams such as the Lakers and Yankees always having seemingly stacked teams. The love is provided by teams like Golden State whose fanbase will always support them no matter what. Teams like the Hawks are just here to be here. The lockout was to gauge and promote both love and hate to add to the entertainment value.

“For the last 3 years intelligent bloggers have been saying that this team peaked under Mr, Woodson and is in a slow spiral down with Mr. Drew.”
That’s rather odd, since the team peaked in wins only two years ago. Maybe those intelligent bloggers were right 1 out of three. That would be last year. Unless you consider a gain in wins in 2009-10 as “past the peak”.

The hawks made Lost in the east conf semis 3 years in a row, at their peak, the year prior they lost in the 1st round prior to that they DNP in the play off for some time. We have now peaked. We lost more games last year than the year before and still haven’t found a center. Get your parachute out. Its going to be a rough landing. Drew will not win more games this year than last and we wont go any further in the play offs than we already have.(As things stand today).

Grandmaster JeJe, this is why the NBA has really problems. Houston doesn’t even get close to better by the deal, their only really incentive to do this deal is cap space for next year. I understand the Lakers want to be better but the owner can’t just flush part of the season and still have a system that allows these things to happen. What is Stern going to do? Nothing, because the Lakers being good is good for BUSINESS!

Wojnarowski, is reporting that the owners are trying or have stopped the Paul deal. I understand the Lakers are going to do what they have to do, but the real problem is a system that forces teams to dump players just to get better. The system should encourage teams to developer players not, just try to mix and match. If they want to have a mix and match league, they should have gone to the NFL system where you never know who’s on your team from year to year.

Translation: Marvin still has no clue. Being together a long time and having good chemistry are two different things. The Hatfields and McCoys knew each other for a long time. And that’s what our team has looked like on the court at times, and certainly during post game media interviews….
I don’t think there will be a sign-and-trade with Chicago for Jamal. The Hawks aren’t looking to take on the kind of salary the matching rules require and the Bulls are focused on using their MLE to sign a free agent.
Translation: Jeff Schultz sniffed it out – T-Mac is Jamal’s cheaply paid replacement, folks. Get used to it.
Still don’t see any of the “knock-down 3-point shooters” L.D. said he wants.
Translation: The organization is not listening to the head coach that they hired. No surprise there.

Although, Michael tweeted (or re-tweeted from someone else) that the Lakers would have landed two exceptions in the deal. The first was for 8.7 million. So, maybe this is why the league stepped in?

And if the Hornets (owned by the league) decide not to make a trade, Paul has no recourse. He can hold out and get fined, but what the hell is Billy Hunter going to be able to do about it? The CBA deal is done. He doesn’t want to stir any craziness up right now.

Let’s check out the roster. I assume we’ll have two starting lineups, depending on the match ups, just like last year. Good move LD. You can’t substitute well, but you did do that right in my opinion.
Small lineup:
Al
Josh
Marvin
JJ
Teague
Big lineup:
Collins/ZaZa
Al
Josh
JJ
Teague
Small bench:
Collins/ZaZa/Kito
Rolle as bigs
McGrady and Sy as wings
Watson (maybe) and Wannamaker, then Hinrich eventually as PG’s and some SG
Big lineup bench:
ZaZa/Kito/Rolle
Marvin and McGrady at wings
Watson/Wannamaker/eventually Hinrich.
We have the talent to go 44-22 and make a ECF run.
We have the coach to go 22-44.
Talentwise, Sekou is wrong.
Coaching wise, Sekou is right.
I don’t know where we’ll end up really.
I would really like to see us sign a Troy Murphy, Josh McRoberts, or somebody I trust backing up the 4 a little more than Rolle. Rolle may turn out to be great, he just has no track record at this point.
I know in Indy they just raved about him; and one of the ESPN guys had picked him during the draft as the guy most likely to surprise in a late draft pick. So we’ll see.
But kudos to all the guys coming in shape! That speaks well of the character and commitment of this team, as does there playoff run.

So Dwight Wants to Be A Net
Okay, here is how we can help that happen.
Hawks offer Josh Smith,Zaza, and Kirk.
Magic offer Dwight and Hedo
Nets Offer Brook Lopez
Hawks get: Brook Lopez and Hedo
Nets get: Dwight
Orlando gets: Josh Smith, Kirk Hinrich and picks from Jersey.
Everyone happy.

SB – I think Josh ends up wherever Dwight does, now or in two years with FA. They may have this deal going on even kinda behind the scenes on an informal level.

If Dwight goes to NJN, I don’t think they have the trade assets to bring Josh with him. Morrow, Farmar, Damion James, Johann Petro (wow Sund was bad in Seattle – he’s actually done much better here under tough circumstances – good assistants here I think), Maybe Jordan Williams and Morrow since LD wants a shooter for Josh. But that still seems like too little. They’ve got Marshon Brooks also.
But DeRon, Dwight, and if they could get Josh would be a pretty stout 3-some. And if they added some pieces they could be right there as a very good team.
But the Heat signing Battier, if they stay healthy, may have sealed the deal. But Chicago and the Thunder are going to be tough.
OKC and Nate Robinson may be parting ways. I like him for a specialized instant scoring guy off the bench. May be chemistry issues however.

Brook Lopez is a good mix with Al Horford. I like Josh but unless we better this team he will do the same thing that Dwight and Paul are now doing on a low key level because he is not on the same level, but it will be the same thing. If we can get Lopez I would do it, since New Jersey can’t take Hedo under the trade rules they will probably need a 3rd team. I would do it. Josh is going to eventually leave anyway.

I’ve been thinking. By David Stern killing the deal with the Lakers…..has he not just hurt the city of New Orleans more then he has helped them? Wont Paul just leave via free agency regardless when he can? And if that happens the Hornets have nothing to show for Paul. No assets or trade picks.

Conceptually – Stern did the right thing here.
I’m not a Stern supporter / but this [veto] of the Paul trade
was right for the league. Legally and for New Orleans,
not to mention all the non-CP3 players involved;
it was bad timing and worse, it was wrong for the N.O. GM.
However, the league, should never have been in the position
of owning a franchise which compounds all that was wrong
with this resulting fiasco.
Nonetheless – Stern did what must and should have been done.

I don’t think the veto makes any sense.
NO would get good value in return for Paul’s expiring/non-signing.
The Lakers would be gimp after the trade – literally – with their 3 best players carrying knee problems/serious issues (I think that Kobe will start to struggle noticeably* this season with the extremely heavy game load).
* I foresee 10/15% drops in all averages
Houston would not be that good after the trade BUT Paul is a NBA second team which only wilted in last year’s playoffs due to chemistry issues (Shannon banged his girl and Kobe knew about it – according to reports).

I know the amnesty rule (amnestied players are auctioned to non tax teams*).
I said that Billups will end up in MIA because he expressed his unwillingness to report to a non-contender.
SO: whoever claims him off waivers will have trade him to someone who qualifies as “contender” if, and here I don’t know the rules, if he can be traded after being claimed off waivers (immediately or midway the season***).
* could** be the reason why Sund does not want to go into luxury NOW.
** doubt it though
*** I don’t see why would the league forbid a trade involving a player signed off waivers

Sekou Smith is a hater! This is the guy who, prior to the Hawks drafting Marvin Williams, insisted to me in an email that that was the right move for the Hawks. Later, he revises history to say that he wanted the Hawks to take Deron Williams (which was my pick).
The Hawks have made significant changes to the core. They have jettisoned two players who cant guard ANYBODY in the NBA, Bibby and Crawford. To replace their production the Old Horse signed two players who are better BASKETBALL players than Crawford will ever be, Hinrich and T-Mac. These players play BOTH ENDS and know how to PASS AND GET TEAMMATES INVOLVED. These are BASKETBALL SKILLS that people who think Crawford’s volume scoring is good basketball will never understand.

So T-Mac DEFENDS better than JC1, he PASSES better than JC1, he REBOUNDS better than JC1. But on a team where he played behind starter Tay Prince, because he scored fewer PPG, everyone sounds the PANIC ALARM and thinks this is a downgrade. KH two way player… UPGRADE! T-MAC two way player… UPGRADE!

From Sekou Smith: “…this is the year the Hawks hit the skids….” “They’ve operating on borrowed time with all of the subtle tweaks the franchise has made the past four years. But without Jamal Crawford (free agent) and a healthy Kirk Hinrich to start the season, the Hawks will start the season in neutral without making a splashy move during training camp. The fact is, they’ve done just about all they can with the current roster, all the while resisting the urge to make any significant changes to their core. This is the year that inactivity comes back to haunt them.”
Totally Agree – They might not even make the playoffs this year…! You can thank your Atlanta Spirit Group for this mess.

Free-agent guard Jamal Crawford is the only Hawks rotation player who won’t be on the roster to start camp. Hawks general manager Rick Sund has said he wants to re-sign Crawford, but the guard has drawn strong interest on the market and may be out of the Hawks’ price range.
Crawford, in a series of posts to his Twitter account, expressed frustration with what he considers to be lukewarm interest from the Hawks.
“Whoever wants to talk I’m willing to listen,” Crawford said in response to a message asking him which is his preferred destination. “[T]hat’s what happens when [your] own team is confused.”
It really sucks rooting for good teams with terrible management. That is the case with the Falcons, Braves and Hawks. Atleast the Falcons have a good owner thats willing to spend, but their coaching is just plain awful.
The Braves and Hawks somehow managed to fall into the hands of money hungry corporate monguls and we see the product.
Listening to Jamal talk, he pretty much is saying what most guys in the league are saying and thats why should i go play there when they dont even know what they are doing down there in Atlanta. Dang shame when players are trying to go to the Nets and Clippers before they would come to Atlanta.
Atlanta is just not a great sports city right now.

No Deal!
To answer Grandmaster JeJe re: What does it mean that the NO Hornets is a league owned team?
_______________
The NO Hornets are owned collectively by the remaining 31 teams of the league. Can someone check me on the total number of teams there are? Take that number minus one.
Dan Gilbert sent a scathing email to Stern in opposition to CP3 going to the LA Lakers in light of what LeBron just did in Miami. Dan Gilbert said, “You may as well just call the NBA 5 teams versus the 25 Washington Generals!”.
-MSNBC “Morning Joe” Show”-
Further, Dan Gilbert demanded Stern put the vote to the what, (25 owners?) and, all but 5 teams voted the deal down.
Stern is saying, “This was a decision made for the good of the NBA and, in the spirit of competitive balance around the league.” – MSNBC “Morning Joe” Show”-
To team Kobe with CP3 is just not fair to small market teams like New Orleans – is the mantra.
________________
Here’s my point: OK, the CP3 deal was nixed by the selling team NO, which is owned by all the other teams – not named The NO Hornets. What about the other small market teams that are not owned by the league? Let’s ponder, IF CP3 had played for Minnesota, would that trade have gone down? If so, then the new CBA does not drive competitive balance as currently written.
The new CBA is a sham, because the 1% will always ignore any luxury tax ramifications in a quest to WIN The Lombardi – Always!
Without a hard cap, contraction and non-guaranteed contracts, the competitive balance theory will remain just that – a theory!

From Yahoo!Sports;
Gilbert sent the email to Stern, deputy commissioner Adam Silver and a handful of Gilbert’s ownership peers on Thursday. The following is the email in its entirety:
Commissioner,
It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.
This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.
Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.
I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard.
(They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).
I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.
I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?
Please advise….

So, Grandmaster JeJe, the NO Hornets are owned by the remaining 29 NBA teams. Collusion at it’s best? Damn straight!
So the 29 remaining teams voted to NIX the CP3 to LA trade. 5 teams voted YES and 24 teams voted NO.
I wasn’t sure of how many teams the NBA boasts.
________________
Like I lamented earlier: What IF CP3 was being held hostage in Minnesota? Then what? This is a systematic example of The Ricoh Act, in it’s highest form: in a word – collusion! In a Federal Court, this ACT would be illegal.
Only in America … Only in America – my cohorts!
CP3 will undoubtedly play the entire year in NO unless he agrees to sign an extension elsewhere of the NBA’s liking. This conundrum alone will cost his an additional year and some 30M? dollars, IF he walks away in UFA – CP3 will not benefit from any Bird Rights (see Jamal Crawford w/o a SNT). Without a SNT, Jamal is looking at a MLE around 5M per year.

I’m sorry, but they haven’t made any changes to the core.
Every move the Hawks have made were geared to be rental peices/stop-gaps. Bibby could’ve been viewed as a member of ‘the core’, but truth is, he was simply supposed to be a stop-gap until we found our PG of the future. And honestly, do you not see how long it took the Hawks to finally move past the Bibby even with his deteriorating skill set?
People were all over the Hinrich deal last season, but truth is, we wouldn’t be looking for as much pop off the bench right now had we not traded for Hinrich in the first place. We could’ve used JC2 and that extra draft pick. Could’ve helped provide us peices, even though they probably would’ve never cracked the rotation. Hinrich hasn’t done much since he’s gotten here. He helped out in the Magic series, and then we saw that Teague really could’ve been that guy to fill Bibby’s shoes had this coaching staff not been so arrogant. Wouldn’t have costs us an arm and leg either.
Jamal, member of the core? You can say that if you want. But, he was only a Hawk for 2 seasons.
Adding T-Mac doesn’t excite anybody. This team is nowhere near contention. The best teams in the league (you know, the one’s that were *already better* than the Hawks) are getting even better. Swapping Jamal for T-Mac ain’t gonna get us anywhere. You see teams like the Bulls and OKC making leaps with their core, while we’re here barely crawling, at most taking baby steps.

Does CP3 have the heart to leave that type of money on the table, just for the opportunity to play in LA with an aging Kobe? Can he do it just for:

“Amen. Signing of T-Mac is very shrewd and quietly respectable.”
Actually, you neglected to focus on the fact that “NOT SIGNING JAMAL is very shrewd and visibly respectable”.
Jamal will end up signing for the max money he can get with a bottom dweller where he will be able to entertain folks with his 4 point plays and his teams defeats.
I don’t think that ANY CONTENDER will actually look seriously in signing. An exception could be – eventually – a franchise with an iron grip management/coaching who could use him wisely (as little as possible).
But I don’t think that any franchise in those conditions will propose sufficient money for him to sign (last year’s conflict with his landlady is an indication that Jamal may not be very wealthy financially, so I don’t think he will sacrifice $$ for an opportunity to win a ring).

I wish it were Stern who was the genius; instead it took Gilbert to make total sense of the situation.
How the Lakers can even get a shot at CP3 is amazing…they continue to tweak the rules in their favor.
Now, will we ever see Sund make an organizational changing move? He absolutely is stealing money from the ASG for his ‘expert 32 year knowledge of the NBA’. It is hard to continue to watch the Lakers and Celtics rip this league in their favor and take risks to get the LOB trophy in their presence.
We say ATL is a bad sports town; well, without the Lakers, LA is in worse shape. They just happen to have a family that is willing to take risks beyond the league rules. Since Chamberlain to Jabbar, they have always found a way to be on top of this league. Sund has watched this go on for 30+ years and has what to show for his experience? A resume with team affiliations probably as long as Joe Smith.
While I wait for Sund to come out and say we gave it our best shot to keep JC1, the rest of the league continues to remold their roster. We are challenged with so many limitations, we will be lucky to see us hold onto the 4th seed in the playoffs. Truth-be-told, Sund likes us right where we are in this league. He can say he runs a continuous playoff bound team and only has to overpay his own roster to keep it rolling. It will catch up to him soon enough when these guys quit producing.
I can easily see a 1st round bounce this year with what has been constructed so far.

Maybe Scola and Dragic at most. I like Gasol alot, but you’ve got a guy on his last legs there if you ask me. Maybe 1 or 2 years at a high level left tops for Pau.
So BK rapes ATL of Gasol as the Memphis GM. Too make amends, we hire him, and he messes us again by drafting Marvin, Shelden, Childress, and Acie. Was BK some kind of plant or something sent by Boston (or somebody else) to destroy the Hawks?

Are the Hawks built for a Championship run? Let’s see:
Can you win a championship with
PG – Teague/Watson/Hinrich/Sy – Yes, I think you could. Miami was close with Bibby and Chalmers
SG – JJ/TMac/Wannamker – Yes, def. Alot of Contending teams sure wanted 5 time All star JJ last season, and he looks in great shape from what I’ve heard and seen.
SF – Marvin/Josh/Tmac – Yes, but barely. Marvin certainly has the potential, even if he would just play D. See Powe
PF- Josh/Al/Rolle – Yes, but I wish we had 1 more experienced body here – either a tough guy who’s solid, or even a Troy Murphy/Josh McRoberts type.
C- Al/ZaZa/Collins/Kito – Yes, but barely. Al’s very good, but smaller. Maybe he gained 10-15 lbs of muscle over the break. ZaZa is a very good back up C in the NBA right now, but not quite versatile enough to be a good starter it looks like. Collins is Collins. Hope he stays healthy and is in shape.
If Rolle surprises us, and we stay injury free relatively, we have a low level Championship roster.
But if the same LD shows up that coached us the last 38 games of last season, who doesn’t know how to properly utilize in game substitution patterns, we might not make the playoffs.
We’ve got the roster, the talent, the guys working hard in the off season – we just need a legit Coach to show up, whether that be Larry or somebody else.
ASG spend a couple of mill and win a Championship!! Your window is closing. JJ is getting old. 1 or 2 years of very good play from him left tops. He may still be good, but not that good if you know what I mean.
With the right Coach, we’ve got a two year window to do this thing.

Mary, Dooling is an above average defender and long distance shooter. He is a combo guard but has performed well when pressed into pure PG duty (for maybe 5-8 games). And I think that he is from Atlanta (or at least has Atlanta connections). he is an 15-20 minute/game guy who won’t do anything stupid to hurt the team (but also won’t likely do anything heroic). Think Delonte West without the tatts and the guns in the backpack. He would have been a nice add to the team.
Hornets got screwed with the blocked trade. They were receiving 4 quality pieces and could have easily stayed competitive this season with the new guys in the fold. At the same time, ish happens when the league owns the team. If memory serves me correctly, one of the Hawks owners tried to stop a trade back in 2005 that was negotiated by his team’s GM. With Stern essentially owning the Hornets, he was able to stop it much like Belkin attempted (and only failed because of his own partners).

I think TPrince and and CButler just got overpaid, even by NBA standards. I like both their games, but they got alot of money for this late in their careers.

The only little, tiny sliver of silver lining I see with Miami signing Shane, and it’s not much hope, but a small crack is what is the lineup going to look like closing out games?
All I can see is:
LeBron at Point Forward
DWade
Battier
Haslem
Bosh
That’s stout, but a team with a quality PG, and a real Big would give that group trouble.
And a bench of Chalmers (if he re-signs), Miller, and Anthony. You still have no real Big. And if you bring Chalmers in, Battier or Haslem has to sit. Which means you either lose your solid vet lock down defender in Battier, or you go very small up front, and lose Mr. Hustle in Haslem. Bring Anthony in, and somebody still has to sit.
I think they may have some chemistry issues. Not much hope, but hope nonetheless.

Yeah, I doubt the Heat will touch Baron. OB, my guess is the Bucks made the Dolling deal to free up cap space for Dunleavy. And the Hawks could have used the Childress exception to acquire Dooling. (But it probably would have pushed them over the infamous luxury line). Meanwhile, Boston gets Dooling from the Marquis Daniel trade and then Daniel rejoins them at the vet’s minimum. Solid bench backcourt with Dolling & Daniel. Real solid.
The Journal Sentinel reports the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to send guard Keyon Dooling and a conditional 2012 second round pick to the Boston Celtics.
The transaction should be completed Friday.
The Celtics will use the $2.38 million trade exception from Marquis Daniels to accept Dooling’s $2.24 million cap number.
Dooling’s contract expires at the end of the season.

I think the perimeter and rim defense that Brewer and Asik could have brought to the team would have accounted for a more solid and balanced team. I am VERY disappointed that this deal fell through. Are there any more S&T scenarios regarding JC1? Is there any way to jettison Hinrich and his salary if the Luxury Tax line cannot be crossed by the ASG?
Undoubtedly I am showing my ignorance and sounding amaturish but I’ll ask anyway: Could we simply trade Hinrich for draft picks so that we could remain under the tax while adding the pieces to our roster that would give us a chance to compete in the playoffs?
Furthermore, what in the heck was that trade exemption we got for Childress and will it ever benefit us in any meaningful way? Does it have an expiration date?

I don’t think anyone hates on Kirk on the blog execpt Superiorblogman (and maybe he has changed his mind since last season). The reality is that the ASG treats the Luxury Tax as hollowed ground upon which they may not step. I wish we could change their mind but it won’t happen.
So what are we to do? Leave Hinrich on the shelf while he heals and play most of the season with a weak bench and an unprotected rim. I wish we could keep Hinrich. Hawks Versus the Heat in the above scenario:
When the Heat have the ball:
Teague/Hinrich would be guarding DWade – Hinrich is known as a DWade stopper, and I think Teague with his speed could give DWade problems. But of course Wade could post Teague.
We could do that.
JJ would Guard LeBron – He can for short stretches Guard him about as well as anybody. JJ wants to be bigtime, so he tries very hard in these situations.
We could do that
Marvin would G Battier – He can if he doesn’t fall down
Josh would G Haslem or Bosh – He can do either. Probably Haslem, because I can’t see Al chasing Haslem.
So Al would G Bosh – he can do that.
So we can Guard them if properly motivated and coached at the end of games.
Can the Heat Guard us?
Wade would Guard Teague. I think Teague could wear the soon to be 30 year old, oft injured Wade out with his speed a little bit.
LeBron would Guard Marvin – and this would probably give LeBron a rest for the offensive end.
Battier would Guard JJ – Not good for the Hawks
Haslem would Guard who? Probably Josh – but Josh can take the oft injured, 31 year old Haslem anytime he wanted. Especially now that Josh has lost 30 lbs. I know Udonis is fierce, but he’s not 28 any more.
And Bosh would Guard Horford. And with Horford’s midrange, Bosh has to pick his poison – come out and contest it, and leave the good passer Horford to pass to cutters to the basket, with no inside help to contest, or let the best midrange shooter in the League open to drain shots.
The Hawks, with their athleticism, are uniquely suited to harass the Heat.
Especially if Larry turns into a good Coach sometime soon. But he did do the two lineup thing, which I feel was good. And the Collins on Dwight thing, also good. It’s his in game stuff that leaves you wondering…

1. Only question is did the teams abide by the CBA?
2. Large markets more attractive than smaller markets, never going to change.

You know about Miami signing another Big – they didn’t play Dampier much later in the season and in the playoffs – he’s about done.
Theo – the same – about done
And the point still holds – you can only play 5 guys at the time. If you bring in Kwame, which would be great for the other team because he’s as likely to throw the ball to them as his own teammate, you still have to sit either Haslem the inspiration, or Battier the D beast. Because I don’t think you’ll sit one of the big 3 in crunch time.
I still say they will have match up problems in crunch time against some teams.

Camby is in the last year of his deal. And Felton is in the last season of his deal as well. So either way you would have their contracts coming off of the books at the end of the season, to go along with Kirk’s. I actually would consider a S&T of Jamal paired with Kirk to Portland for BOTH Felton and Camby. The reason why I would do this deal is because Kirk is going to miss essentially at least 20% of this season, if not more.

“…The Hawks have made significant changes to the core. These are BASKETBALL SKILLS that people who think Crawford’s volume scoring is good basketball will never understand.” – Buddy Grizzard
@Buddy Grizzard, vava74 and Grandmaster JeJe
For the 2009-2010 regular season, Aaron Jamal Crawford averaged 18.00ppg (as a reserve) and was SOY (Sixth-Man of the Year). What did Kirk Hinrich and Tracy McGrady do that (’09-’10) regular season? During his two seasons with the Hawks, Jamal Crawford has scored 20+ points (off the bench) in about 49 regular season games (32 in ‘09-’10 and 17 in ‘10-’11) out of about 155 regular season games played. The 155 games played to date (79 in ‘09-’10 and 76 in ‘10-’11) by Crawford over the past two regular shows a high level of durability and dependability in the Hawks’ lineup. You, Buddy Grizzard, need to research the number of regular season games played by both Hinrich and McGrady over the past two regular seasons and determine for yourself what their (Hinrich’s and McGrady’s) durability and dependability is. Crawford is already the best set-up man (passer) on the Hawks’ team for Al Horford on the pick and roll (pop) play/move; that’s probably one of the main reasons Al Horford wants Crawford re-signed along with the fact that he’s (Crawford) a good teammate. Jamal Crawford, the Hawks best three point shooter, made 282 three pointers (163 in ‘09-’10 and 119 in ‘10-’11) over the past two regular seasons with the Hawks, which led the franchise. How many three pointers did Tracy McGrady and Kirk Hinrich make over the past two regular seasons?
I almost forgot to mention that this past regular season (’10-11) Jamal Crawford scored 30+ points off the bench in three games (31 @ Sacramento, 36 @ Toronto and 34 vs. LAC). How many times did Hinrich and McGrady come off the bench to score 30+ points in a game this past regular season?
In 24 playoff appearances for the Hawks, Jamal Crawford scored 20+ points in ten (10) post-season games – that’s ten (10) playoff games off the bench! In addition, Crawford has 17+ points (off the bench) in 13 of 24 playoff appearances for the Hawks. Jamal Crawford, as I have mentioned in previous posts, scored 20+ points off the bench in four consecutive playoff games, which had not been accomplished since Kevin McHale performed this feat back in the 1991 playoffs for the Boston Celtics! That was 20 years ago!
Jamal Crawford has never started a (regular season or post-season) game for the Hawks but scores like a starter and scores better than most, if not all, starters for the Hawks!
Was Tracy McGrady a good acquisition for the Hawks to replace Jamal Crawford – HELL TO THE NO! Was Tracy McGrady a good acquisition for the Hawks to potentially replace Marvin Williams at small forward and later on package Marvin Williams, Josh Smith and another Hawk player for an athletic, rim-protecting big (man) – it could’ve been but I think it’s a little too late because it looks like Tyson Chandler is all but gone to the New York Knicks.
In conclusion, as much as you, Buddy Grizzard, and others on this blog may try to deny it, AARON JAMAL CRAWFORD HAS BEEN STRAIGHT BALLIN’ FOR THE HAWKS OVER THE PAST TWO SEASONS!

One other slight sliver of hope that the Heat won’t go 66-0 and sweep the playoffs – they may not even win the Championship. The other sliver of hope is:
Miller, Haslem, Battier, and DWade in January will all be 30+. Haslem is a walking medivac, same with Miller. DWade gets hurt alot because he’s a kamikaze – and he’s older now. Those nagging things will start catching up with him, especially in a compressed season. Even Battier may get worn down a little.
So maybe their not as invulnerable as they may appear.
And a team like Chicago that brings Noah, Boozer, Gibson, and Asik at you up front, Deng on the Wing ( I like that – catchy phrase), and a DRose relentlessly coming at you may be a good tonic for them also.
But if everybody stays healthy, I’ll admit, it doesn’t look good. But they may still have some chemistry issues by trying to trade Bosh or something. Who knows? That’s why they play the season.

Why I won’t miss Jamal
Jamal gave up 5.3 more point per 100 possessions with Crawford on the court than when he was off the court, the worst differential on the team.
___________________________________________________________________________________
This is the 2nd game aginst the Bulls regular season
“Chicago’s offense: 23 points on 17 possessions
That works out to 135 points per 100 possessions. The league’s best offense typically scores about 114 points per 100 possessions. In other words, Chicago did rather nicely.
• Rose’s stats: 4-of-8, eight points, three assists, zero turnovers
So on all the rest of Chicago’s possessions, including fast-breaks, Rose shot 6-of-19, dished out seven assists and committed all eight of his turnovers.”- Bret LaGree
