Atlanta Hawks: Tracy McGrady plans to sign one-year deal with Hawks

Stephen A. Smith reports that the Hawks and forward Tracy McGrady have agreed on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.

The Hawks still aren’t commenting on the report and McGrady’s agent, Arn Tellem, has not returned a call. Teams have been able to discuss contract parameters since last week but are not allowed to agree to terms with free agents or sign them until Friday.

(Update: Source confirms McGrady plans to sign with Hawks.)

McGrady, 32, played in 72 games for the Pistons last season.

Really??? We will potentially let Crawford go for a player with declining skills and probably should retire. Not what I had in mind.

From the previous blog:

AJ,

I left the blog for a minute, but I was thinking, just like you, of praising Big Dog for his even demeanor in an adversarial role. No mean trick.

Big Dog,

I applaud you for not stooping to “attacking the messenger” just because we see some things differently. As you probably know, there are tons more things about that Hawks that we likely agree upon, than those on which we disagree.

But still, I hope to convince you to make it clear when it’s opinion. To do otherwise is to become somewhat ideological, like political blogs always do. I’m not buying the “ideology” that Horford is selfish and scheming. But as long as you call it what it is: your opinion, then I’ll fight for your right to say it even as I disbelieve it.

@kwooden

Let me fix this.

like your last name. Horford’s turn-around jumper was/is actually a set shot. It was performed against 6′8 South American centers.

Al still didn’t appear to have an up and under move, because he’s not that much of a mismatch to make the defender jump. He can’t develop this.
Jack-Micheal was actually a better post player than Al, because he was shorter and naturally more fluid. Al is just bigger and a stronger athlete.

F*** the Bulls and helping them. Let them go into luxury with Jamal and having to resign Rose.

Noah is not a true center and Boozer has to carry a lot of offense and is thus a likely injury risk. They have little hope for internal improvement and Brewer’s and Korver are terrible role players. Let them jam up the Bulls works.

Hawks should pursue and develop only potential 2 way players. Defense and offense. We dont have the superstars necessary to have 6′7 Korver out on Lebron or make Brewer work on offense.

A concerned fan..

Teague, Kirk, Joe, & T-Mac is a solid enough backcourt. M. Williams is ok at 3, but if we let Crawford walk & bring in Josh Howard like I’ve heard rumlings about, that would solidify us 1-3, & this is where is it gets sticky. I’m fine with signing T-Mac & have Jamal walk ONLY if we spend that $ on a CENTER! AL & Josh are the 4’s, Al can swing to the 5, Hopefully Benson gets some time this year as well, as does ZAZA, but those are ALL BACKUP OPTIONS!!! We need a starting, defensive minded Center. Even if we decide not to get Josh Woward, we should think about going after Jerad Jefferies as a back up SF to Marvin, he’s defensive minded & a solid rebounder with length & its rumored that the Knicks are probably just going to offer him the Vet min, (which is what we got T-Mac for, which is why I like the move), all in the order to free up room for our biggest need, which again is a Defensive minded, shot blocking, rebounding Center, who is not purely an offensive liability!

Sautee, yeah, agreeable disagreement is so much more fun than what we sometimes find here (and in our government).

As for TMac, like I said the other day, not the worse move but not the best one either. For the fan interest and swagger that he may bring to the team (for the bare minimum salary), I think it is a good and creative signing. Of course, that assumes that he doesn’t have flashbacks to 2000 and decides to chuck up 20 FGAs a game.

From Ken Berger of CBS Sports:

“In addition to Pacers, who’ve spoken with David West’s reps, several non-room teams have inquired about FA forward: DAL, Spurs, MIA, ATL…. Hornets willing to let West go in sign-trade if it will get to contender and bring back an asset or two, sources say.”

I think its a good move. Last season T-Mac showed he can still play. If the Hawks get a good offer for Jamal they should jump on it. I would be shocked if the Bulls are willng to part with Asik but Sund has to demand that he be part of any deal for Crawford.

I’m not buying the “ideology” that Horford is selfish and scheming.

But he is scapegoating and throwing the team under the bus. Moving Marvin out of the roster sure.

But he said he can make play for others in iso. Then why is he getting his shot blocked by Bass and SGs like Gerald Henderson.

@MC players tend to overrate themselves. For example: Smith compared himself to Deng as an SF. Another 6′8 guy with limited range. But Smiths strengths are:
+ PnR
+ transition, steals
+ defense, blocks, rebound% at SF
+ Foul/FTA rate

Horford is only 6′10. He says he can be an iso player. So who does Horford compare himself to? Again, players tend to overrate themselves. And there is a growing sense he has plateaued as a star but someone you cannot build around.

McGrady… I want to get bigger. But that would mean reshaping the core. Complacency.

“Complacency is a state of mind that exists only in retrospective: it has to be shattered before being ascertained.”

Only when Joe Johnson gets old and Hawks have 0 titles will people say Horford never had the tools to be a superstar.

Najeh, in fairness, the same happened when playing alongside Yao in Houston. But as Melvin said, Jamal was able to find a role and support a playoff team (after failing throughout his career previously). The key (IMO) is knowing and staying within his role.

I like our 2011-2012 team to look like this

PG – Teague/ Hinrich
SG – JJ / Brewer / Sy
SF – Smoove / McGrady / Wilkins
PF- Horford / Williams / Benson
C – Asik / Zaza / Collins

Now that team has the makings of being very good on offense and defense.

LD must be nervous…

If Mcgrady is 70% of what he was, the Hawks get Brewer and Asik and go into the Lux Tax to make these moves…LD would have to get to the ECF or they will fire him.

???
If the Hawks get Asik, would they trade Josh and Teague to N.O.?
T-mac SF/SG
Al PF/C
JJ SG/SF
MW SF
Brewer SF
Asik C

That is alot of SF..Hmmmmmmmmmm.. I am just saying, Teague and Josh look alot better that the Warriors deal without Curry and Clippers without Gordon.

This feels so good. I am so glad the NBA is back. Sund def needs to pull the trigger on the bulls deal, even if we cant get the center. He should push as hard as he can, but he shouldn’t let it be a deal breaker…..

Reports are that Josh is 30 pounds lighter than last season. And apparently Teague is playing at a really high level. Will we finally see the up tempo team LD and Woodson have always talked about?

T-Mac for the vet minimum is a great deal. He was a solid bench scorer for the Pistons last year, and if his minutes are managed properly, he can be a solid bench scorer for the Hawks this year. He has the ball handling ability to play in a big back court next to Joe, and the size to play some 3 depending on who he is matched up against.

I am assuming this means Jamal leaving is a certainty. If the Bulls are his destination, I’m guessing the Hawks get some combination of Brewer, Korver, or CJ Watson in return. If they threw in Asik that would be ideal, but if not, that means the Hawks are going to have a glut of guards and swingmen. If they get Brewer and Watson, for example, that would leave Kirk, Brewer, Watson, Damien, T-Mac, and Pape Sy on the bench, who can all play the 2 and 3.

Particularly if Watson ends up coming to the Hawks, I wonder if they will look to unload Kirk in order to get under the luxury tax line. He has an expiring deal, probably wouldn’t be that hard to move, is set to make $9 million this season, and could probably bring back a decent draft pick in a trade.

If you look at those 4th quarter meltdowns, you’ll recall that the guard play would build leads through the 3rd quarter and then they would run out gas..What happens next is your #4 Josh and #5 Al would disappear on offense, could not score the ball in the post and the Hawks lose…

We need a #3 who could put up 20-25 a night…A go to guy in the 4th cause Josh and All NBA AL aint the ones….

I argued last season (with Sautee) about Horford’s comments about playing the 4 or 5 position. I’m not going to say Horford is a bad teammate. I’m not going to say that he is a good teammate either, because I have never been his teammate. But I will say that, on previous teams, if Horford didn’t realize in the eastern conference there were only one or two CENTERS in the conference better than him. But there are at least 6 or 7 power forwards (just in the conference alone, including Josh), then he was bringing up a mute point about playing the PF position.

I am adamant that I do not believe Horford is athletic enough (offensively or defensively) enough to be able to man the PF position every single night. Think about this, physicially Horford is the same size as Mourning, and bigger than Wallace. If Horford was in the weight room more instead of at the three point line, he would be the big bully in the yard at the 5. And that has nothing to do with height. Ewing used to have a 3 inch advantage on Mourning, yet Mourning would DOG him whenever they went head up. Sorry to say, but I don’t see that same kind of fight in Horford, that I saw in Mourning, Wallace, or even Josh!

I remember at times last season (especially in Bulls series). Josh would be ALONE battling Noah, Gibson (or Boozer) under the goal, swatting every thing they threw up. Eventually, they would score but Josh was just crazy enough to still keep battling. People compare Horford to Lambeer. But Lambeer was CRAZY. And I don’t see that in Horford. You can’t tell me that Mourning or Wallace jumped higher than Horford. They’re just crazy enough to challenge every shot that you attempt. I don’t believe there is a player in NBA history (beside Shawn Bradley) who has gotten dunked on more than Mutombo. But Mutombo was crazy enough to still keep challenging.

Physically, Horford can’t be a star at the PF position. But at the center position, its only his MENTAL lack of aggression that stops him from being one of the games top 3 centers in the league! When Horford develops the mindset that I’m not giving you ANY baskets under the goal, then he will be able to dominate at the 5. Otherwise, he’s just bound to be a too slow, awkwardly moving PF.
