Hawks general manager Rick Sund said guard Kirk Hinrich had surgery to to remove a cyst and repair the labrum in his left shoulder and is expected to miss at least the first month of the regular season.
Hinrich experienced discomfort in his shoulder as a result of offseason workouts and had the procedure in early November.
“The injury typically requires three to four months of recovery,” Sund said
Based on that timeline, Hinrich could be out through the end of February. The 66-game NBA regular season schedule is to begin Dec. 25 if there are no snags in the ratification of the new collective bargaining agreement.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com first reported Hinrich’s surgery.
Hinrich, 30, was acquired in a Feb. 23 trade with Washington for rookie guard Jordan Crawford and a 2011 first-round pick. Missing training camp would rob Hinrich of a chance to further develop chemistry with his teammates and his injury deals a blow to Atlanta’s guard depth.
With Jamal Crawford set to hit free agency, Hinrich is one of three experienced Hawks guards under contract for this season along with Joe Johnson and Jeff Teague. Teague now enter camp on Dec. 9 as the only point guard on the roster and, barring a major addition, would be the starter for at least the first month of the regular season.
Teague started seven of 70 games during the 2010-11 regular season before replacing the injured Hinrich for the East semis against Chicago. Hinrich suffered a hamstring injury near the end of Game 6 of Atlanta’s series against Orlando.
Hinrich injured his right shoulder during training camp with the Wizards last year and missed games during the season with elbow and calf injuries. He’s averaged just over 73 games played per season for his career.

I’m not sure that not discovering Teague was Larry Drew’s fault. I heard Doug and Ryan Stewart, Steak and Nick say they saw first hand how he moped at practice because he wasn’t given the starters role from day one. They all claimed that Drew would push Teague and he wilted because his pride was hurt. Now, of course I wasn’t there, so I don’t know where the truth lies. Maybe Michael could shed some light on this. Personally I thought Drew did a great job in the Orlando series.

Vava, pardon the late response.
I agree as for as Kirk situation could be the best thing to happen for the Hawks…Kirk can also be a mentor to Teague during his recovery…so in that perspective it’s a win win for the TEAM. However, you would have still liked to have had Kirk services at the start of the season.

Dawglasville, most bloggers over here believe that spoiled brats who don’t know how to handle adversity reside everyplace else but in the Hawks lockerroom. It is inconceivable that a young man would come to work and provide half-hearted effort and focus… that doesn’t exist in a basketball arena. Nope, every player has the potential to be great if given the proper coaching and playing time. The player need not do anything but show up with sneakers on and wait for a chance to be great. That seems to be the prevailing thought of many around here. Greatness is pre-destined for all players on the roster (with any decent coach).

CP3 IS TAMPERING! I HATE THAT PLAYERS CAN DO THIS….
cp3 is demanding to go to NEW YORK NICKS:
1. NY doesn’t have to offer any trade materials.
2. insider trader info for season tix holders, most will DEF re-up if they KNOW cp3 is coming.
3. new orleans can’t do ANYTHING to get pieces to replace cp3.
4. cp3 screws the new orleans organization
5. no team would even do a one year rental now.
players should have to keep their mouths shut. this shoulda been added to the cba

supreme i didnt miss it for a second. glad you are still in the shadows reading though, good comments are always appreciated. yes, i wanted to see their books open widely for all to scrutinize and explore and allow interpretation. it might be as revealing as how much moolah the ncaa generates on amateur labor as they sustain injuries that last a lifetime at their own expense as they accidentally opened their books on the net for all to see last week. i also say, so did the players want to see as we had and them to “believe” what the owners told us of how they were paupers, all the while putting the players numbers out there for all to see. that is where the distrust started and grew from there. it was a grand pr move for the owners in my eyes and most who can see through the folly and they played on it to the unsuspecting naive fan to the utmost.
also speaking of folly here is a good one on how the balance of power has suddenly changed due to the niggling and wrangling of the past few months for those of you thinking times would cheange:

Re Big Ray
So Josh comes back skinnier. Funniest part of that is Vava not realizing that Smith wasn’t getting outjumped for rebounds, he was getting BLOCKED OUT…which goes back to the same fundamental issues he’s always had. So what will a ligher Josh Smith do? Jumper higher on those 21 foot jumpers?
You’re boxed out then use the swim move and spin move, move your feet and such a faster Smith has the fundamentals to do this.
His added weight helped his defensive boards (he blocked out more than ever which might not be saying much) but his offensive boards, the speed and energy beat your man to the ball boards he missed out on a lot.
Smith would be bent over every game, and take himself out of plays by not running end to end.
A) For a guy with no jump shot you have to be consistently moving. See Marion or Gerald Wallace.
B) His 15 foot face up game was decent before the weight gain. Now he can elevate and use speed on offensive glass and jumpers I have hope he starts scoring more. Unlike Marvin or Al he is coordinated enough to take it to the basket if a seam opens up.

AJ,
Yes, young players should not pout if they don’t get the playing time/starting job.
Yes, young players should put EXTRA work if they don’t get the playing time/starting job.
BUT:
1. There was ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION for LD to keep a carcass on the floor (Bibby) or a guy completely ill-prepared to play PG (Jamal) in detriment of developing and giving a FAIR opportunity to Teague.
2. Teague was told that he WOULD HAVE A CHANCE at the starting spot. That was 100% bull and when you get 100% bull from a superior at that level, 999/1000 times you POUT.
3. More, during the season, when Teague had the opportunities here and there, HE SHOWED PROMISE and was rewarded immediately after with DNP-CD.
The numbers BACKED Teague:

doc,
IF by any disastrous event we re-signed Jamal, LD would start him ahead of Teague.
Notch yet another reason not to want Jamal back.
I would sign him for what he is worth 4/5million BUT with him firmly harnessed – ie. using him 10-20 minutes per game TOPS and depending on match ups.
Jamal’s major value, IMO, is against weak teams, when he can be safely deployed to break open games.
Against top teams, Jamal should be used very very very limitedly.
Obviously, there could be situations in which he is so hot and the match up is so favourable that you can ride him (ORL series).
But against good defensive teams, the most likely result is what we got from him against CHI games 2 to 6: NOTHING on offense whilst HURTING US BADLY on D.
Unfortunately, neither Woody, nor LD, were good enough head coaches to identify this and overused Jamal in many games.

vava, I’m not going to open up that old box of funky worms. If you believe that the first step in the process is game time, then your logic is sound. If you believe that the first step in the process of earning time or a starter’s role is practice, then fans are blind to the progress made in that stage. I happen to believe that in all team sports, practice is the first step, it is like cooking a meal in the test kitchen before you serve it to a paying customer. If your stuff isn’t up to par in the test kitchen, I don’t see why you allow the cook to go live with real customers. If a QB can’t satisfy his position coach in drills, I don’t think he will be the starter. If a batter can’t show the ability to hit situationally, then I doubt that he will get the chance to bunt over a runner in a crucial game situation. But if in your world you are willing to give a guy a chance who hasn’t earned it in practice, then you obviously will disagree with my opinion.
When I teach my kid how to drive and if he can’t do well in an empty parking lot, I will definitely keep him out of real traffic until he learns. That’s just me.

I like Hinrich, but the team just can’t have this. The season is too short this year for someone to be out until the end of February. Maybe this is our Amnesty player? Hinrich seems to be an injury just waiting to happen. This is the 2nd time (first in last year’s playoffs) that he has been unable to answer the bell because of an injury.
$8 million should do more than just buy you a player on the IR.
Big setback. Going to be next to impossible to find a solid replacement. Might be time to show Hinrich the door.

Shouldn’t even be in this situation to begin with.
We had a young combo guard in the form of Jordan Crawford who could’ve filled the role. And with that 1st round pick, it sure would’ve been nice to have a SF like Chris Singleton on the squad ( basically the 2nd coming of Stacey Augmon ).
But nope . . . we get Hinrich. Now we don’t even have him for 1/2 the year, and God knows how he will play once he comes back.
While Iverson would be an instant box office attraction, I don’t believe the ASG will go after him.
I could definitely see them bringing back Acie. And at least with this go around, Acie knows that he’ll have to get playing time, even if he’s the backup. Also, any PG that Sund is familiar with in the past, is a potential target. So Earl would definitely be on the target list.
Also, don’t be surprised if this guy ends up in ATL as the backup PG. He’s always been erratic as hell, but with the loss of Hinrich, we will need some scoring punch from somewhere. So don’t be surprised if this guy ends up on a Hawks roster come mid-December.

When Teague plays in the backcourt with JJ the Hawks have a +15pts differential….THAT IS CRAZY!!! With kind of production I am not sure we should even consider trading him.
Teague turns this team weakness(dribble penetration offensive and defensive) and turns that into a strength…I am all in on Teague. Hawks- 45-11
