Atlanta Hawks: Pape Sy signs lockout opt-out deal in France

According to reports in Europe, Hawks guard Pape Sy has signed a one-year contract with BCM Gravelines in his native France that includes an opt-out clause if/when the NBA lockout ends.

An AJC Francophone offered a rough translation of the report from BasketACTU.com:

“Here’s what you’ve been waiting for: Pape Sy is officially from Graveline, closing recruitment for the BCM. . . . Drafted by the Hawks in the second round in 2010, the leader Pape Sy should, however, remain with the BCM only during the lockout because of a clause in his contract. The northern club thus finally found the required money to make this luxury recruitment. . . . Sy will have the chance to silence his many detractors with his real talent level.”

So I guess Sy is viewed as a disappointment in France (and a “luxury recruitment” for Gravelines. The jury is still out on Sy with the Hawks. Presumably Sy could benefit from the youth/thrift movement that seems inevitable for the Hawks if only because the new CBA isn’t likely to provide the kind of relief necessary for them to round out the roster with high-priced vets even if the new owner were inclined to do so.

Sy joins Keith Benson and Magnum Rolle as Hawks players set to play overseas during the lockout.

MC, thanks for the update.

Is any one else looking at the player rankings on ESPN? Noticed how the Hawks already has 5-6 players from last season’s roster in the bottom half of the league?

tomfoolery, now there is an expression I haven’t heard since I last shopped at Rich’s.

His last 6 games notwithstanding, let’s get a Euro contract in the works for young Mr. Teague as well. And maybe send Marvin somewhere (like Oz) to find his heart & courage.

Jae,

Great post!

It’s really great to see a guy who has a 100 million contract waiting for him working out so diligently during the summer when there is no perspective on when the season will start.

95% of the posters around here would go full fledged Eddy Curry with a contract like that.

JJ is looking very very sharp physically. I even think he dropped a few pounds back to his 2007/08 physical form: lighter and quicker.

Teague (of the CHI series) – JJ – Hinrich is, IMO, has all the makings to be the best back court in the league.

All 3 are two way ball players.

What we need is a good coach instead of LD and to get Al back into his overalls and out of his cheap accountants suit.

doc,

Yes, all points out to him and there seems to be very little margin for doubt.

I will probably get Big Ray’s mojo racing at unbearable levels if I digress on the subject of the availability of guns in the US and the whole gun culture for too long…

But it’s really hard not to:

Just a few months ago it was van Exel’s son that shot and killed a friend.

Critt had already lost his job in the NBA (to some extent) because of that gun incident with Agent 0 and now apparently killed an innocent bystander. (and Agent 0 lost gazillions with his own suspension and almost lost the whole 100 million outstanding).

Delonte West was booked whist carrying a plethora of guns… got suspended and lost money.

Plaxico was arrested when he shot himself in a nightclub, lost millions and a few of his best years…

Jayson Williams killed a guy and now is in jail and probably bankrupt…

Just the other day Darius Miles was arrested trying to board a plane with a hand gun…

The whole gun loving culture is freaking stupid. Guns are for law enforcement, military and, in a very very very controlled way for people living in the country side.

PERIOD

Hand guns don’t make anyone more manly, cool or whatever. Only makes that type of gun carrier (an urban civilian) stupidly dangerous.

Trade Horford for Motiejunas, Thabeet, Hill

Seeing as how the esteemed Mr. Cunningham ignores every question I ask him Well, I can take a hint.

Hawks have two options outside of B.S.ing another year away with small rebounding zone defense schemes.

Al+shooter+c
Smith+shooter+c

Horford is an excelling passer but he is probably the one center in the league who cant score on smaller forwards. Ive already listed his wingspan and height as negatives and you can see it in his running motions. Hes not a natural forward

Alas, truth is Hawks fans have no confidence in their players unless they get a coach’s vote to the All Star Game. I hope Josh Smith is traded and makes his way to a contender AT SF.

PARTING SHOTS
Sad because Hawks have all the pieces to grow and be elite. Horford’s all star play at center is invalidated come playoffs because he cant defend that position.
A 7′1 shooting forward and backups with 7′2 length of Mr. Malcolm Thomas AND homecoming of 7′2 length Jordan Hill AND Marvin as an (expensive) backup is just what the team needs to rectify the roster
http://i55.tinypic.com/2vufsd1.jpg
I worked hard on researching a rebounding and well rounded floor spacing roster that can post up from 3 positions. First with Bogut and we had to take on Gooden and pray for Sanders. Now I find a stretch 4 with same compact wingspan as Z-Bo, Carl Landry, Troy Murphy, Blake and K-Love etc and post it here.
Response “AL for Dwight!”. Newsflash Dwight is an NBA player and knows more dirt on ATL Hawks than you ever will and has openly dissed the Hawks.

He knows the financial situation and has just gotten beaten by his rivals. He’s not coming here.

Alas, But no one listens.
Less is more.
Oh well have fun with resigning Jamal Crawford and playing musical chairs with Al. Maybe he grows some wingspan and becomes Amare next year. Probably not.

On a side note I saw a La Pizza Loca the other day in San Bernadino and realize I’ve eaten their pizza. :D

Well said.

Having been a school teacher & knowing that

I see that argument with perfect clarity.

Also having been a “country boy” prior to ‘evolving’
[ahem] into the renaissance man that I am today …

What I fail to see;
is the logic of the NRA …
“pry this gun from my cold dead fingers”

Jae,

He is looking great. I think he will have a huge season next year. Not necessarily much more ppg but more assertive and aggressive.

As I said above, Teague (of the CHI series), JJ and Hinrich make a 3 man rotation in the backcourt which could become the best in the league.

All 3 play good man to man D, Teague penetrates, Hinrich is very savvy offensively (plays to his strengths and does not attempt to do what he can’t) and hits his outside shots and JJ has the whole offensive package (if he comes in 10 lbs lighter as he looks to be on those videos, we will see a difference on his driving).

I have by far more confidence in this trio than any other combination we have had during the past 3 years (Bibby, JJ, Flip – which was a B for me, Bibby, JJ, Jamal which was a C+ for me in year 1 and D+ on year 2).

O'Brien

From ajc.com;

“I’m not going to sit here and say that I’m just a defensive coach. I can help Mike, I think, offensively as well,” Woodson said during a conference call. .

I can see woody reminding D’Antoni to coach to his strengths. ISO Carmelo and ISO Amare. And just to show how much he has grown from his Hawks days, he sprinkles in some ISO Chauncey to keep opponents guessing.

Although we havent seen or heard anything on the other players, I assume they are all working out in their own ways, in their own gyms.

But JJ being the $100 mil man, it is good to see him practising. I dont know if JJ is calling up the other Hawks players, but this is another example of him leading by…example.

In other news, Marvin doesnt mind the lockout, because it gives him time to get healthy, and hopefully complete his degree.

OB,

I think that after this lockout Marvin will come to training camp with a swarm of bugs circling his ass, trying to escape from the gravitational pull it exudes…

He has been on the record saying stuff that don’t point out to him being remotely interested in BB during the off-season so I expect him to come back looking even more like an ostrich…

He has the physical tools, some talent, some willingness to do stuff that guys don’t usually like to do (like defending, moving feet laterally, …) but then he exhibits ZERO passion for the game…
